Chapter 2

“Excuse me, where’s my order?”. An impatient customer called out from his seat. 

Maya flashed her brightest smile at him. “I’m sorry. I’m bringing it now”.

She hurriedly placed his coffee on a tray as she moved to serve the customer. Maya is a 21 years old girl blessed with a pretty face, brown eyes and blonde hair, 5’6” inches tall, the perfect epitome of beauty with brains. 

Her insensitive father had left them on the road when their business went bankrupt. 

He’d left them with a huge amount of debt to pay off from different loan sharks and went to be with his former lover with whom he had a secret child with before he’d gotten married to her mother leaving her to take care of her mother and her younger sister. 

Maya who was in college at that time was very bright in her studies and was doing her degree in electrical and computer engineering and had a dream to become a very successful engineer but seeing her family struggle, she’d given up on her dreams and threw herself into finding a job to pay off her father’s debt.

Sooner than later, Maya started working two jobs. One as a waitress in this café and another which was a part-time job in a private company. 

She’d denied getting help from anyone including her neighbour friend, Micheal Jackson who lived with his grandmother and was her childhood friend. 

Maya looked down at her watch, checking the time. It was time to clock out and go to her second job. 

She removed her apron from her neck as she moved to Scott, her manager. “Manger, I’m clocking out”. 

“Oh, it’s 3pm already?”Scott asked disappointed 

“Yes”

Scott gave Maya her tip for the day. “Then, I’ll see you tomorrow”

“Same”. Maya replied flashing him a smile as she collected her tip from his hands and moved out of the café, hailing a cab and climbing in. 

She told the driver where she was headed as he took off immediately. When the cab came to a stop Infront if the company, she paid the driver as she walked in. 

Maya flashed a smile at everyone she passed by, greeting them while making her way up to her office. Each worker had a private office of their own. 

She sat down on her chair, about to start toady’s work when she heard a soft knock on her door. 

Maya sprang up to her feet as her boss walked in. “Good afternoon, sir”

Fernando, her boss gave her a soft smile as he approached her. “How are you doing?”

“Very well, thank you sir”.

Fernando, who was now standing by Maya’s trailed his hands lightly against her skin. “I’m glad to hear that.”. He slowly moved his hands to her back and lowered them gently, search for her behind when Maya distanced herself from him and slapped him hard across the face. 

“You pervert!”. She snarled. Furious and humiliated, Fernando grabbed her wrist. “Do you have any idea what you’ve just done?”

“Yes, I know. Don’t worry, I’ll be submitting my resignation letter and it’s not you firing me. I just pity your wife who doesn’t know the sort of man you are”. A hot slap was landed upon her cheeks by Fernando which made her neck to twist. 

He pointed at her angrily while gritting his teeth. “I’ll make sure you never get a job anywhere else in this world. Mark my words”. Fernando stormed out of Maya’s office as she sank low to her chair and sobbed softly. 

She wiped off her tears as she started clearing off her desk. As she stepped outside her office, she saw all eyes on her as humiliation washed over her. 

You did the right thing. She chided herself as she walked down the hallway ready to say goodbye to the company forever but halted as someone caught her eyes. 

Down the hallway by her right, she saw a man dressed in all black with hazel green eyes with a group of bigger men ganging up to beat an elderly man and she could stand to see this injustice. 

I mean how could anyone who was human did such a thing and how come nobody had reported the issue?!. 

Maya felt her blood boil as shee approached the man and holding his hand as he was about to hit the elderly man. “Excuse me, what do you think you are doing in here!?”. She hollered. She looked at the golden wrist watch at his rich and scoffed. “I understand that you rich people have this mentality to see everyone else under you as slaves but you aren’t even human!”. 

Maya threw his hand aside as she turned to the brutally brusied old man on the ground, helping him up. “Mister, stand up”

The mysterious man grabbed her hand, furious. “And who do you think you are interfering in my matter?”

Maya scoffed, irritated. This man wasn’t even ready to admit his wrong. He realky was the lowest of all lows!. “Your matter? You almost killed this man!”. She released herself from his grip as she looked from the man to his gang behind him. “You all don’t even deserve to be called humans”. She snarled taking the old man by his arms and leading him out of the company. 

When they got outside, Maya examined his wounds. “Are you okay? Let’s take yiy you to the-“

“Why can’t you just mind your business?”The elderly man cried. “Did I ask you to help me?”

“But Mister-“.The elderly man had turned around, dragging his feets on the ground as he walked away from her.

Maya signed as she hailed for a cab to go home. When she climed in, she suddenly started to regret her decision of hitting her boss and resigning as she’d gotten a text from her mother telling her that the shark loaners had paid them a visit again and she hopes she had the money with her. 

Maya tugged at her hair as she screamed out, frustrated. The cab driver nearly dropped her off thinking, she was mad. 

Hot tears rolled down her cheeks as she cursed her father softly. She wiped her tears off her cheeks as her phone rang. It was Hannah, her best friend. “Hello?”

“How’s work? You must be tired, right? Should I come and pick you up? I have-“

“I quit”

“What?!” Hannah blurted out, surprised but nonetheless, she was going to support Maya’s decision because she knew Maya had a good reason for it. “Where are you right now?”

“I was planning to go home but I don’t know anymore”. 

“That’s fine. Come to my place”. 

“Okay”. Maya ended the call as she told the driver the direction to her new location and in a matter of minutes, she’d arrived in Hannah’s house. 

When she got to her front lawn, she ringed the doorbell as it was thrown open instantly and a tall blonde, teary eyed rushed forward and hugged Maya. 

The girls went up to Hannah’s room as Maya told her all that had happened and why she had to quit her job. 

“I swear if I could bash your boss in the head right now, I would”. Hannah cursed furiously. 

“I guess I have to look for another job now. The café’s pay alone won’t be enough to pay back our debt”

Hannah contemplated on whether she should tell Maya what was in her mind it not and after pondering on it for so long, she decided to table the matter. “Maya, you know I heard of this really new company”

“What’s the name?”

“Wolfs company. It’s a company that operates on electricals. The boss of the company is super rich and is looking for a temporary assistant. You’d get paid 2000$ per day”. Hannah could see Maya’s expression darken. 

She knew what Maya had gone through to give up on her dreams on electrical engineering and here she was recommending a job that was in that field. She was really thoughtless. “You know, Forget about-“

“I’ll give it a shot” Maya impeached as Hannah’s face brightened up. “Really?”

“Yes, I need the money, anyways. When is the interview?”

Hannah looked at Maya with a worried expression. She knew she’d left something out. 

“What is it?” Maya asked curious. 

“It’s in two hours”

Maya shrieked. “Two hours!? Hey, send me the location to the company, okay?”

“Yes, goodluck”. Hannah called out afer Maya’s retreating back as she watched her sprint out of her room and move out to hail a cab. 

Maya couldn’t stop fidgeting and shaking as she headed towards the company. She was excited. Because after many years of giving up her dreams, she was finally going to get back on that track at the same time, oay off her father’s debt. 

Everything seemed so surreal. When the car stopped infront of the company, she rushed out as she made her way to the receptionist asking where the interview for the job was holding. 

She was led to the front of the CEO’s office. 

“Can I go in?” She asked the receptionist who nodded her head. Maya lightly rapped on the door as a deep masculine voice from inside replied. “Come in”. 

Maya took in deep breaths as she turned on the door knob and walked in. The CEO was seated in his chair and seemed to be engrossed in his conversation with a man Infront of him. 

She bowed her head greeting him. “Good afternoon, I’m here for the interview of the new job post” . 

The CEO raised up his head and when their eyes met, Maya wanted the ground to open up an swallow her. 

The surprise in her face couldn’t been hidden as she could swear her jaw dropped open. 

She couldn’t believe that seated Infront of her was the man she’d met back at her former company. Tbe one who was ganging up against that elderly man. “Y..You?”she stuttered. 

In an instant, Alex sprang up from his chair as he furiously walked towards Maya, pushing her out of his office. “Get out”. 

No way in hell was he going to give her this job
