The ride to School

Maggie’s POV

“Beep beep” the alarm kept ringing.It was time for me to go to school but I was struggling so hard to get out of my bed.Well it wasn’t my fault, the bed was just so soft and sleeping is one of my favorite hobbies.

I knew I had to forfeit my sleep or else I would be late for school.I quickly pushed away the bed covers and headed straight to the bathroom.I brushed my teeth and took a soothing bath.

I got out of the bathroom drenched with water because I forgot to take my towel in with me.

I needed to dry my body quickly so I took the nearest clothes on my bed to dry myself.

I checked the time on my wrist watch and oh my God I had just 20 minutes left to get to school.

I brought out my school uniform from the pile of clothes that was folded neatly in my wardrobe.

As I was rushing out of my room,I bumped into Mason. “Shit! I am so sorry” I said feeling embarrassed.I avoided making any eye contact with him.

I hadn’t seen Mason in a while and by now it was obvious that I was in hiding.

“Look who finally decided to show her face,you just had to make sure you ruined my white.Are you happy?” He asked mockingly.

I knew I had to ignore him or else I would lash out and I promised myself to not let him get to me. “I am sorry” I bowed and walked away quickly.

I checked the time again,3 minutes left and it takes 10 minutes to get to school. I couldn’t ride in Mason’s limo even though we attend the same school. I wouldn’t want people in school to start spreading rumors about me.I was stuck with either taking public transport or running. If not I would be very late.

I walked down the road pacing my steps,then someone yelled from behind “you know you are never going to get to school in time if you keep walking”

I looked back to see who it was,it was Mason!

“Get in the limo,ride with me to school” he said firmly.I stared at his handsome face,there was just something so sexy about the way he talked.I didn’t want it to look like i would just obey anything he says so I replied “No it’s fine.I’ll walk to school and it won’t even take..”

He interrupted me and said “Don’t make me have to carry you myself into the car”

I gulped nervously and entered the limo quickly. I knew it was going to be a very unpleasant and awkward ride but he was kinda right.It made no sense for me to keep walking when I could get to school in no time with a car.

As we were on our way to school,I made sure to avoid eye contact so there was an uncomfortable silence in the car.I decided to break the silence by starting a conversation. “ Are you excited for school?” I asked.

“No,” he replied, looking through the window in the opposite direction.

“Me too.School is just the worst especially if you are a loner like me”

“ I am not sure I can relate as girls seem to worship the ground I walk on. Everyone seems to be in my space all the time.Well I guess it comes with being the son of a billionaire” he smirked.

I rolled my eyes in irritation.I don’t think I have ever met anyone as proud as Mason.It’s like the world literally revolves around him.

I didn’t say anything else. I just wanted to get to school so I wouldn’t have to be in the same space with him.

Immediately we got to school a group of girls swarmed Mason like he was some celebrity. Another set of girls were gossiping and taking pictures.

I heard one say “Why is Maggie coming to school with Mason Choi. Omg! Are they dating or what?”

That really irked me. The speed at which people could make assumptions was surprising.This is exactly the type of drama I was trying to avoid.Now when these girls try to dig for the truth, they would find out that I am a charity case. I tried to hide my face with a book as I walked away,when Mason grabbed my hand.

My heart for reasons I couldn’t understand started to beat really fast and my cheeks turned red.

“Let’s go” he said as he took me into the school hall.

Everyone was watching with their shocked faces.Why exactly did he grab my hand in front of all these people?What was he trying to prove?I couldn’t understand why he did what he did.When we finally got to the front of my class room,I pulled him to the side and asked “what was that all about?”

“You said you are a loner.Does it mean you have to be one today?” He replied looking directly into my eyes.His lips looked so soft as he was talking,I couldn’t help but imagine what they would taste like. I hated him.Why exactly was I thinking about such things? I quickly snapped myself out of his trance. “Later Maggie!” He said as he turned away.

I entered my classroom and like I expected people were already gossiping based on what they saw.

Tarila was being consoled by her friends because she was crying that I replaced her position as Mason’s girlfriend.

They we’re not actually dating but Tarila was so obsessed with Mason.She made sure no girl made a move on him by constantly flocking around him.I sat on my chair and opened my books trying to pretend like I didn’t know what was going on around me.She and her goons then came to confront me.

“Who do you think you are? I can’t believe this ugly bitch thinks she has a chance with Mason. Everyone knows Mason is mine and mine only” she growled at me.

I didn’t want any trouble at all so I just said “First of all,my name is Maggie,I am sure you don’t care and secondly it’s not what you think. I would never like a guy like Mason.Don’t worry you can have him”

“Then what were the two of you doing together? Why did you come to school with him?” She asked with arrogance.

“I can’t explain..” I didn’t know what to say but luckily for me,The Geometry teacher was there to save my ass.

“Everyone get to your seats!” He yelled.

“ We are going to have a pop quiz today.Get your pen and paper ready ”

I let out a breath of relief. I was so happy that I didn’t have to answer Tarila's difficult question.Then again I remembered that I wasn’t prepared for the quiz.I hadn’t read anything. Well I never start reading on time until it’s close to exams so I definitely wouldn’t do well in a spontaneous quiz.It is a bad habit that I am very much aware of.

“ Shit! I really hope he isn’t grading this quiz ” I said to myself

“ Make sure you all give it your best shot , it will be graded as 20% of your final score” he stated.

Everyone in class began to murmur in panic.I knew I was fucked.

“Silence!” He yelled as we continued the quiz.

I have always struggled with school and getting good grades so I already knew that I was going to fail the quiz. I tried to write something down just to at least have something on my paper till the quiz was over

My friend Sarah walked up to me after the quiz because she saw how sad I was when I submitted my paper.

“Was it that bad?” She asked

“ Terrible!At this rate I just pray to God in heaven I don’t have to repeat this class”

“ Don’t worry,you won’t repeat this class.I can help you study.We can read together.You just have to put in more effort and it will all work out I promise” she said trying to cheer me up.

“ You must really think I am a pathetic charity case.Easy for you to say. You are one of the smartest kids in school. Everything is easy for you. You don’t have to read so hard. You can’t relate to the way I feel, your life is perfect ”I said as I rolled my eyes.I knew what I saw was a lie but I let my emotions get the best of me

“That’s not true.My life isn’t perfect. That’s a very insensitive thing to say. Just because I am great at school work doesn’t mean I don’t have other areas in my life that makes me feel like shit” she said as tears formed in her eyes.
