Each step was a measured dance, a symphony of caution as Megan held coffee in her hands. She walked steadily towards her formidable mother-in-law, Mrs. Wilson.
“What took you so long”. She asked in a high-pitched voice and a facial expression mirroring the wicked stepmother character in Cinderella.
That woman was the root of all evil.
“I apologize mother, I burnt myself while making your coffee, that was why I took so long”. Megan spoke out, showing the red scar on her finger.
"Why should I care about your mishaps? Mrs. Wilson scoffed mockingly. Just hand over the coffee”.
“I adjusted the sugar just as you have asked ”. Megan's lips raised with a polite smile.
This was the second time she was making the coffee, since Mrs. Wilson had complained about the last one having too much sugar.
And this has been her life for the past five years. She fell in love with Greg during their university days and married him, hoping for love to win.
Megan nervously looked up at the large clock on the wall and the time was past 6pm. She knew her husband Greg was already back from work. But she hasn't seen him since she returned from the grocery store.
“I will go attend to Greg, he must be hungry”. Megan's voice appeared low as exhaustion set in. but before she could even take a step further.
“What is this?” Mrs. Wilson expelled the coffee vehemently from her mouth as her face contorted with grimace. Stopping her once again.
“Why does this taste bitter rather than disappointment?”. She seethed through her teeth in disgust.
“Bitter?” Megan asked in a slightly high tone. “I don't think it's bitter mom, I made sure the coffee was adequate, just how you like it”.
“A fool would think they know better than me. Mrs. Wilson's rigid voice echoed dangerously. “When I say it's bitter, then it's bitter”.
“Ahhh, she exclaimed lightly. You know what, just go make another one Megan”. She said, putting her hands on her head in frustration, and then smashing the ceramic mug on the floor.
Megan's eyes popped out, this is unbelievable. How could she just smash the coffee she took so long to make?
“Didn't you hear me”, her hoarse voice, brought Megan out of her thoughts.
“Yes, mum”, she answered, shaking with a distant voice. Megan took in a deep breath while she imagined the face of her lovely husband. Everything she did was to pacify him.
Her love for him knew no bounds, for him, she would go to the ends of the world. A little pain from her husband’s family was nothing.
So she walked to the kitchen to make another before she soon returned, offering the coffee to Mrs. Wilson.
As Mrs. Wilson reached out to take the coffee from Megan's hands. Her lips pursed in a silent judgement cutting deeper than words. Why did her son have to marry Megan in the first place? She was nothing but a church rat who wanted to fend off the Wilson family.
“Leave”, she dismissed Megan with a flicker of her hands. These words made Megan do a little happy dance.
Although she was harsh, Megan was glad she would finally see her husband.so she made her way upstairs while Mrs. Wilson face twisted in annoyance.
Alongside the annoyance embedded in Mrs. Wilson’s face. She had a mischievous glint in her eyes as it traced the footsteps of Megan, who was innocently enthusiastic about Greg's arrival.
“That bitch”. “This one isn't even as good as the last one”. Mrs. Wilson murmured under her breath as she sniffed the coffee in satisfaction
Megan's fast steps soon slowly start to decrease as she approaches the door of Greg. His door was slightly opened, which was unusual.
Looking through the little space, she felt her shoulders vibrate out of its own will. Her teeth grits in confusion.
Her hands covered her mouth in disbelief as she blinked fiercely hoping the hunting image would clear off, but it didn't.
The image soon followed, with Greg's moaning alongside a female’s coy voice.
“Yes, Greg, you know just how I like it”. The familiar voice echoed along Megan's delicate ears.
Megan couldn't mistake that voice, it was Elizabeth. Her best friend, who was also Greg's ex-girlfriend.
With trembling hands pressed against the door frame for support, she struggled to comprehend the scene unfolding before her. Greg, her husband, and Elizabeth, her best friend, entwined with bare nakedness.
How is this possible? How could the man whom she spent her whole life worshipping betray her like this, the thought flows into the deepest layers of her heart?
With a surge of bitterness coursing through her veins, she banged furiously on the wooden door, swinging it open.
“You bastard”. Adrenaline pumped through her veins, Making Greg and Elizabeth jilt in fear.
As Megan barged into the room, Greg's initial shock morphed into a defensive stance. His fingers tightened into a fist, making his, knuckles whiten as he struggled to regain control of the situation.
“Can't you see we're busy?” His tone was laced with annoyance, an attempt to deflect from the guilt that flickered in his gaze.
“Don't you have some manners, Megan. How many times have I warned you to knock before you enter my room?”
Megan furrowed her eyebrows with a subtle shake of the head.
“Seriously, Is this what you have to me?”. Her voice broke incredulously. He had no remorse, and neither was he trying to explain.
“Don't blame him, Megan, it's all my fault. I seduced him” Elizabeth interjected with a false expression of melancholy.
“And you were supposed to be my friend”. Her head turned aggressively towards Elizabeth. You are such a betrayer”. She spitted on her face.
However, a deadly slap across her face made her look up in fear to see Greg in front of her heaving.
“Don't do that again”. He merely said coldly.
This was like a dream to Megan. Greg had never laid hands on her. But for the first time ever he did.
Elizabeth cleaned her face, and Megan could swear that she saw a smirk tug at her lips. “Don’t slap her, Greg, I am the one who messed up ”.
“Please forgive me, Megan”. She begged with desperation all over her.
“You are not going to blame me right, Meg? Greg used to be my boyfriend before he became your husband. Old feelings die hard, and I can't control myself. I love him too much”.
Greg's heart Weaver by her words so he went forward hugging Elizabeth from behind. “I love you too, and It's not your fault, okay”. I am so sorry Liz, didn't mean for you to witness this”. A warm expression Megan had never seen settled on his face.
“No, I never meant for this to happen, Greg”. The tears caged in her eyes now flowed without control as she moved closer to Megan.
As she went closer, Elizabeth’s lips curled into a malicious smirk as whispered some provoking words into Megan's ears. “You know, he couldn't stop calling my name while we fucked”.
“And, I am sure, he calls my name anytime he makes love to you”. She said, her lips raising in disdain. Megan's breath caught in her throat as Elizabeth's words sank in.
Memories flooded her mind - the late nights and the hollow excuses she'd made for Greg's distant behaviour. All those times she'd convinced herself that Greg was simply tired that his mind was elsewhere - they were nothing more than feeble attempts to mask the painful truth she now couldn't deny.
“How dare you do this to me, Beth”. Megan grabbed Elizabeth by her hair, dragging her mercilessly until she was forcefully pushed away by Greg.
“Get a hold of yourself and stop being a psycho”. Greg said with a calm and stoic face before he suddenly stomped his feet angrily on the floor as he walked to his drawer.
He returned with his footsteps heavy with harboured anger, as he threw papers at Megan
“There Sign them”. His voice was low, and his intense gaze sent shivers t
o her spine. And to Megan's dismay, she picked it up, shattering her hope yet once again.
“Divorce papers?”
Megan squeezed hard on the divorce papers Greg threw at her. She looked at it sorrowfully to see that it had already been signed by him.She always knew Greg had little or no feelings for her. He had married her immediately after he broke up with Elizabeth. And now that she thinks of it, it seems he married her just to spite Elizabeth and make her come back to him.Megan gazed into the direction of the window with disbelief evidenced in her beautiful green eyes. While Greg stood in the glow of the evening, petting Elizabeth and whispering sweet nothing to her. They seemed so perfect for each other, as their features complemented one another.“I've signed the papers. You should also sign them so that we can finalise the divorce at City Hall tomorrow”. Greg said without taking his eyes off Elizabeth, who was still crying.“Since we didn't have any prenuptial agreement, there won't be any delay in finalising the divorce”.Megan was speechless. “Does your mother know about this?”“She doe
In the dimly lit room, Elizabeth laid peacefully on Greg's chest. Her thoughts were occupied by the image of Megan getting into that sleek Rolls-Royce.Her eyes flickered, with uncertainty and insecurity. Could it be that Megan was just lucky, or there was something more? She moved uncomfortably on Greg's body before she spoke out.“Greg, do you think Megan has another man?” Her eyebrows raised, giving an impression of her obliviousness.“Why?” He asked, pretending to be indifferent, but deep down he wanted to know more.“I saw her get into a Rolls-Royce after she had signed the divorce papers”.He wanted to laugh at Elizabeth's face, but he didn't. He knew well enough that Megan didn't know anyone, and neither did she socialise with people during their five years of marriage.“Megan doesn't know or has anyone of such, it's probably a taxi. After all, most taxi these days use good cars”.“I am scared, babe, Elizabeth's lips trembled pretentiously. What if we get caught. What if she is
Greg couldn't believe his eyes right now. Megan was supposed to be behind bars, but here she stood firmly. His breath hitched as his eyes widened in realization. “I feel hurt, Greg, how could you just insinuate that I wouldn't be here on this important day”? A playful smirk tugged at the corners of her lips.“I… I thought you weren't coming”. Those were the only words he could think of.“Did you think I wasn't coming, or you hoped for me to be behind bars”. Megan said with a sinister grin.Greg's eyelid twitches nervously, did she know what he did?“I would like to file for domestic abuse. Megan didn't waste time turning to the lawyer. Do you think that is possible?”“What!!” Greg could see the walls of the office closing in on him. Where was this coming from?“You are not out of your mind, Meg, but you seem to have forgotten your place”. His jaw tightened. We are here to finalize our divorce, so stop spitting nonsense”“No ma'am I can't help you with that”, The lawyer spoke in favor
Chapter 5Megan in a dark room laid on a large queen size bed, how she got there was a mystery. A few minutes ago, she was with her friends having fun, but suddenly, she wasn't. At least that was what she could remember. Her breath increased rapidly as she felt rough hands on her belly. Wasn't she alone, her heart pounded and at the same time she felt ecstasy build up slowly in her body? She wanted to speak, but it was more like her voice had disappeared.“You know what”! Megan’s heart thundered in her chest as she heard the hoarse and manly voice. This confirmed the fact that it was a man.“I haven't had sex in the past five years”. Alex drunkenly said. He felt the innocence of the lady beneath him. It's been so long since he had sex.So his body burned violently as he couldn't hold the desire to take her hard. He immediately brought Megan closer, taking her by the lips. She shouldn't be enjoying this right, he was with a total stranger. She was supposed to scream for help. But why d
Chapter 6“What did you say, dear”?Mr. Leonard was shocked as Megan announced that she wanted to take over the m&k fashion group. He never imagined that his daughter Margaret would have any interest in the company.“Yes, dad, Megan can take over. We know she is intelligent and has the ability to make the company triumph”. Loyd interjected.“Will you shut up, pastor?” He was reminded by the fact that Loyd just announced that he wanted to become a pastor.“You ungrateful soul. After everything I did for you. This is how you repay me”. He gave a long look at Loyd before turning towards Megan calmly.“Margaret darling, you do know that this comes with a lot of responsibility and time. Are you sure you can actually take over?” He explained while gesturing his hands.“Yes dad”. Megan replied without moving a muscle on her face.“Okay”. Mr. Leonard took in a long breath as he struggled to decide.“I cannot fully keep it under your care, Margaret. This company was one of your mother's greate
Chapter 7 Greg paced the living room of Mr. Chase as he awaited him in his study room. His thoughts were running wild and anger brewed in his blood. The door creaked, revealing Mr. Chase in his three-piece suit. He had an insipid expression on his oval face. “To what, do I owe this visit, Greg”. He said with suspiciousness laced in his eyes. “I… I need your help, sir”. Mr. Chase could not help but feel irritated. What else did he want? If it wasn't for the fact that he was his daughter’s fiancée. He wouldn't even spare him a glance. “Speak”. Mr. Chase thundered. “It's my wife. I mean my ex-wife, Megan”. His eyebrows knit together as a flicker of embarrassment crosses his face. “I don't know how she could fucking afford a lawyer, but I am sure she is playing mind games with me. She went as far as suing me for domestic abuse. I want to teach her a great lesson”. He said with gritted teeth. “If you could just help me…. “What!”. The thunderous voice echoed in the room, interrupt
Chapter 8 It's been a week since Alex’s one-night stand. In his handmade tailored suit, he stood rigidly while staring blindly at the windows. He was deep in thoughts. Thought that were dangerous if they were more than that. His face was straight, like someone who hadn't smiled for years. “Sir”! John, who happened to have entered the office with two envelopes, interrupted Alex's silent dialogue with himself. “What did you find out?” He asked coldly without facing John. “Mr. Jackson has been found in Italy. Apparently, he leaked confidential secrets of our newly made design and was looking for an appropriate time to sell it to our biggest rival," Jackson paused before continuing. "Silverline group," he added with a cringe. “So when Jackson, Asher, and Mike drugged you up to have a nice time with a woman. Sir Jackson has another agenda, which he carried out immediately”. “That was why silverline group claimed right and accused us of forgery. But thank God you took care of that, s
Chapter 9 “What is this, dad?” Megan questioned subtly. Her brows furrowed into a curious frown. “You might find this strange, but This contract came in from an anonymous source yesterday”. “It is an exclusive opportunity to bid on a prestigious project in the realm of high-end jewelry. Mr. Leonard echoed with satisfaction. Megan brows scrunched upwards. An anonymous offer from an unknown source was quite dangerous. “But why do we need to participate in this project if we don't even know who is offering it to us”. “When it comes to business, my dear, we take risks. And moreover there are rumours that this could be an offer from the most prestigious jewellery maker Mrs. Margaret who was famous globally”. Megan was in a whirlwind of emotions. She found it quite odd as she shook her head as if to get rid of the eerie feeling. “This is not to be joked with, Margaret. The Gold's group who happens to be our partner is also involved as well as our mortal rival, the silverline jeweller
Mr. Leonard’s footsteps echoed softly as he descended the stairs, his eyes were dull as he scanned the room. Alex, Megan, Enzo, and Loyd stood, all eyes on him. Jake clung to his mother's side, his small hand gripping hers tightly."Jake," Leonard said softly, stepping forward with a smile. “You look so much like your mother.” Megan swallowed, her lips pressed tightly together, but she didn’t respond. Her grip on Jake’s hand tightened as Leonard reached out to touch the boy’s face. Jake smiled a little but moved behind his mother to hide. He knew Grandpa hurt mum, so he was also angry.Leonard’s hand dropped slowly, hurt. “Maybe I deserve that,” he murmured, sighing as he pulled back. Enzo cleared his throat as dinner was served and they all moved to the table, sitting in silence as the sound of cutlery clinking on dishes became the only noise. After a long pause, Leonard cleared his throat and looked up at his children. “I know I wasn’t a good father.”Loyd scoffed, muttering under
Two years later.Things may have seemed like they will never go back to normal for Megan, it was from one trouble to another bigger one. However it says with trouble comes ease.Megan stood in front of the crystal like window as she admired the light blue sky. How she wishes she could just stand here forever. As it reminded her of her better and bad Days.“Mummy, we are going to be late, daddy is waiting”. Little Jake, who was not so little anymore, bugged his mother with his sharp and piercing tone.Yes, Megan and Alex got married last year and they have been happy together. You might wonder what happened to Evelyn and Brittany. Well Evelyn was dead obviously. However Brittany's life never remained the same. She got depressed and started taking drugs, Mr Leonard still considered her his daughter so he sent her to rehab.“Oh, baby, Megan's face lit up with a smile. How she loved this little boy. Mummy is done already, let's go”. She grabbed onto his hands and moved towards the living
Life can be unpredictable right. Evelyn was still dazed, it felt as though her legs couldn't move.“No,no that is not true, she sniffed hard. It's not true. He died, I was winning and all of you were my puppets, everything was going according to my grand plan”. She kept emphasising on her words while pointing at Leonard.“Shut up woman, he interjected. I was never dead even if you did everything possible to get me out of the way. I heard the things you said to me while I was unconscious”.Evelyn gasped for the upteenth time. “How is this possible?” However instead of feeling remorse for her evil activities, she felt nothing but anger. It brewed slowly inside of her that it made her burst.“It's all your fucking fault. Did you think after how you betrayed me I will just let you into my life again. I accepted you because of your wealth and what you had to offer to our daughter”.“And I killed your wife to make sure nothing gets in my way again but your stupid witch of a daughter just ha
Brittany was feeling feverish, a feeling that what she was doing wasn't good. However her urge to have Alex just to herself was even greater.“It's too bad we have to get separated in this way, Meg”. Evelyn whispered to Megan as she finally cocked her gun and pointed it at her.“Please, Megan begged weakly. I will go far away with my son and never return”. Jake was the only person she could think of at that moment. She needed to keep him away from harm.“It's too late darling, Evelyn sucked her lips showing false sympathy. You should have disappeared when you had the chance”. She said with a glint in her eyes.“Don't worry meg, Brittany is going to take care of him and Alex”. Evelyn pointed the gun at Megan, this time with the intent of pulling the trigger. She has said all that needed to be said. While Brittany watched with mixed feelings.Everything seemed to be in slow motion to Megan. The moment felt like an eternity. The air grew thick and heavy, pressing against her chest, maki
The fear in Megan's heart was sharp, her pulse quickening as Evelyn stood over her, gun in hand, her expression twisted with a mixture of anger and satisfaction.Brittany stood nearby, her posture tense, her face a mask of conflicting emotions. Megan could see the hesitation in her sister’s eyes, a flicker of uncertainty that was an opposite of the cold malice she had shown earlier. But there was no time to dwell on it. Not with Evelyn so close, her finger poised on the trigger.“Stay out of this, Brittany,” Evelyn snapped, her voice hard and cold. “You’re just as stupid as Sonia was, and that’s why she’s dead.”Evelyn’s words cut through the air like a knife, and Megan’s heart lurched. She looked at the woman closely, wondering if she'd just misheard. Did she just admit to knowing about her mother's death? “What do you know about my mother's death? Megan asked with a shaky voice. She watched as Evelyn struggled to maintain her composure, her hand shaking slightly as she pressed the
consciousness crept back into her mind. The pounding in her head was unbearable, a dull ache that intensified when she tried to open her eyes. “Damn," she hissed as the migraine hit her in full force. She felt like her head was splitting in half and she couldn't even help it. “Where am I?" She muttered as she turned. She blinked several times, trying to adjust to the dim light filtering through the room. It was then that the cold, hard reality hit her—she was tied tightly to a chair, her wrists and ankles bound with rough rope that dug into her skin.Panic surged through her, and she instinctively began to struggle against her restraints. The chair creaked under the force of her movements, but the ropes held firm. “Who is here! Help me!" She called out, wiggling. Panicked, she glanced around her, the memories of what had just happened assailed her. Someone had grabbed her from behind and she'd passed out with the pungent smell forced in her face. She'd been drugged and now she was
Megan shivered, she had a bad feeling that her sister, Brittany had done something crazy. Why else was she calling just when she couldn't find her son and then she was laughing like a psychopath. “Brittany?" She called out over the phone, standing in the living room and shivering in her shoes. “I guess you're home by now, because I know that you wouldn't have answered my call otherwise," she said with a casual tone. “Why are you calling?" Megan asked carefully. She had a bad feeling in her guts that Brittany's call wasn't just a coincidence. “You know why I'm calling, Megan, don't play dumb with me," Brittany replied with a stiff tone. Megan sighed, taking deep breaths to steady herself. She was already trembling and she couldn't find her voice. "Brittany, what is this about?” She asked, already losing her patience. The anxiety was killing her and clearly Brittany was trying to mess with her head. How on earth did she know that she'd just gotten home? And what did that have to do
Brittany stood in the doorway, a forced smile plastered on her face as she gazed at her nephew, Jake. She had a sly smile on her face. How lucky she was, as if everything in nature was just sending her a sign. Her mother's plan would work out smoothly. “Hey little boy," she said with a sugary tone. But Jake just looked up from his painting and gazed at her blankly without saying a word, his eyes almost bored. “Come on, won't you say hello to your aunty?" Brittany tried again with an even more sweet voice but inwardly she was rolling her eyes. “No," Jake gave a single monotonous reply and didn't bother explaining himself, he just picked up his crayons and continued stroking each color across his white paper. Brittany sneered as he turned his face away, he was indeed a miniature version of his mother, Megan, with the same piercing blue eyes and mischievous grin. It was almost like he was staring at Megan's younger self right there on the couch. "Oh, Jake, I'm sure you don't really
Brittany paced back and forth in the fancy little cafe. She couldn't help the anxiety and anger that she felt. The thought of them made her nauseous. “She is in there with him as we speak!" She said and drummed her fingers on the table again. Evelyn had a very calm look on her face. But then that was typical. She wasn't easily ruffled, she always had a plan for everything and that was exactly why her daughter trusted her to find a solution. “Calm down, Brittany, anger never solved anything, what you need to do is plan," she advised. Brittany was exasperated, she hissed, “Calm? How can I possibly be calm right now?" She asked, spreading her arms. “She is with my husband and he won't even allow me see him, he told me to stay out of his way." Smiling, Evelyn waved it all off like it didn't matter. “Come on, Alex is just licking his wounds. You should allow him to do that.” She replied. "I don't know how long that will last for and frankly I don't wish to find out. All I know is that
