Chapter 169

Alex drove home, racing calmly along the winding ribbon of asphalt. He couldn't take his mind off what had happened between him and Brittany, it was either that or he lost Megan forever.

The rhythmic hum of the engine and the thrum of tires against pavement did little to calm his racing thoughts. He gripped the steering wheel tighter, knuckles whitening, as if the act alone could anchor him in reality. He drove into the mansion and couldn't even hear when the security greeted him.

“Welcome home babe”, Megan, who had been waiting up late for him, smiled. The smile that always gives him joy and peace.

He had hoped she would be asleep once he returned. He had intentionally returned late to avoid her.

“Why are you still up?” He questioned with an unshielding coldness.

“I thought to wait for you”. Megan replied reluctantly wondering why Alex was suddenly void towards her.

“Don't wait for me next time. I will be coming home late often because of work”. His voice held no warmth, no trace of
