The year 1881
Rosalie made her way up the path to her home. She had a large smile on her face and was virtually jumping on her feet.
Their tiny cottage became visible. It appeared earlier in the dim sunshine. Her lips widened even more when she saw Hakeem putting additional flowers in the yard. She had some fantastic news for him.
She paused to observe Hakeem and attempted to take a breath. As he pushed the hoe down into the hard dirt to remove obstinate weeds, his veins and biceps contracted. His black skin shone due to the sweat that was pouring on his forehead. She had a gorgeous spouse.
She muttered under her breath, "And I'm one lucky woman."
To make their small house a lovely environment for their kids, he had once informed her he was planting these flowers. She could tell by the longing in his eyes that he wanted them to live like regular people rather than like prisoners hiding in the mountains.
She muttered "Hakeem," putting an end to her line of thought.
As soon as he stopped digging, Hakeem turned to face her and grinned. He had recently bought his wife a yellow sundress, and she looked stunning in it.
The word "wife" gave him the willies. He was ecstatic to have married the love of his life and be able to refer to her as his wife.
He observed the sly smile on her normally calm face, and his eyes widened. She was the cool, collected one in their relationship while he was typically the goofball.
She seemed extremely ecstatic and joyful today. Her face was heart-shaped, and she had red cheeks and eyes that sparkled like diamonds. He cherished the smile she was wearing and vowed to always carry a memory of it in his heart.
Rosalie could see the doubt in his eyes about how she was acting.
"You continue to smile like that," His smile widened to match hers as he stumbled on a twine.
As she handed him a stunning white rose she had picked on the way up the mountain, she did her best not to squeal or hop around.
He looked into her eyes while holding the white rose between his thumb and index finger, realization hit him. A white rose in their relationship represented good news.
"Good news, you say?"
Rosalie grinned and sighed, "Guess," with tears welling up in her eyes.
She grinned even bigger at the expression on his face, "You know I never make good guesses," He spoke.
She exclaimed loudly, "I'm pregnant."
Hakeem's expression gradually changed from shock to happiness to an indescribable state that could be interpreted as pure joy. And Rosalie watched in fascination.
Hakeem crushed her in a tight hug trembling slightly. His hug carried every emotion soaking through his pores, she felt his joy through it. This baby was going to be the first gift they've gotten ever since they wedded.
Rosalie had never felt so complete, she belonged nowhere else but in his arms like this. She held him tightly, not minding his muddy hands.
The only day she’d felt this amount of happiness in her entire life was the day they got married, even if it happened in secret.
That was the first time in her life she experienced the feeling of actually getting what she wanted.
Her father had always directed her every action, even any choices she might have made. Before Hakeem entered her life, she had never experienced even a small tiny piece of freedom. He demonstrated to her the possibility of beauty and the value of life. He defended her.
More than anything else in the world, she loved this man—perhaps even more than she loved herself. He was not only her lover, but also her best friend. And now their child would have him as a father.
Rosalie sighed contentedly as they clung to one another and refused to let go. She stroked her stomach in an attempt to bring their baby into the embrace.
After some time, he stepped back and hugged her face, still crying, which caused her to start crying as well.
I'm the happiest man in the world thanks to you! She was easily lifted into the air by him as he spun her around. The jungle where they resided was filled with the sounds of their laughing and crying.
As soon as her feet touched the ground, he looked down at her stomach and gave it a little rub.
"Our kid." He muttered in pure admiration.
"We'll have a little cocoa bean,." She grinned, warming their lonely cottage life with the thought of a tiny brown, curly-haired cutie pie. Even though having only each other was more than enough, the more the merrier.
"Rose, I love you so much."
I love you so much more Hakeem.” She rubbed her belly tenderly “You've given me the best gift in the world.”
“No, you gave me the best gift,” Hakeem said as he pecked her luscious lips. She smiled into the kiss, wounding her arms around his neck.
From nowhere they heard clapping sounds and they sprung apart, unaware that they'd had an audience all this time.
The color drained from Rosalie’s face as she recognized the face of Thomas, her ex-fiancé.
“Thomas.” She gasped, her hand going to her stomach.
“Rosalie,” Thomas said in a flat greeting.
Thomas eyed her protective gesture with a smirk. His smirk was purely evil, it made the hairs at the back of her neck stand and her stomach churned.
He walked towards them with malice and hate shining through his eyes, the eyes which were focused on her husband.
She took a protective stance in front of Hakeem when she caught sight of the armed guys that had come with Thomas. They looked like thugs who could snap a neck at any moment. Her stomach started to protest wildly, and dread washed over her.
Hakeem in turn stepped in front of her, “What are you doing here?” His voice shook with rage, his fists clenched tightly.
“I’m not talking to you!” Thomas spat, deadly malice in his voice.
This time, Rosalie stood beside Hakeem, her nails digging into his arm which she held tightly onto. “What do you want?”
Thomas let out a bark of sarcastic laughter, taking a few more threatening steps toward the couple. “Your father wants you home dear Rose, he is very angry that you eloped with a servant.” He spat the word servant like it was a bitter taste in his mouth."“She’s not going with you!” Hakeem boomed, red hot rage flashing through him.“Shut up! how could you dare to think of eloping with your master’s daughter?” Thomas sneered.Rose shook with rage. “He is no longer a servant Thomas! He is my lover, my husband.” She slipped her hand into Hakeem’s palm desperately needing strength.Thomas scowled “I don’t care. Your father has searched far and wide for you after you caused him irreparable embarrassment by eloping with a servant the night before our wedding.” He inhaled deeply as if the memory alone scarred him. “He is very angry dear Rose, he’ll never approve of your love for such a lowly person. You know the daughter of whom you are better than I do.”“I don’t need his approval Thomas, I
At that moment it started to snow, Rose’s favorite season. It was the first snow. Her favorite day of the year.Rosalie had always loved the snow, but her love for the season grew because the snow had led her to meet Hakeem. They would’ve been in their little cottage, celebrating their first baby together. The snow would’ve been the icing on the cake as they enjoyed each other's company. When Hakeem finally looked at her with trembling lips, unable to speak, her heart broke all over again. But, she knew she’d take the bullet all over again.Rosalie summoned every ounce of strength in her body to lift and hold his face between her cold hands. “Hakeem, I love you much, more than you could ever know. I want you to remember that.”“I love you, Rose.” He cried, “I can’t lose you, plea … please don’t leave me.”Rosalie wanted to bawl, but she had to be strong for him. She refused to believe this was the end of them. They didn’t get to visit the beach or go to his Homeland, Africa. Or find h
Scarlett was gone for 5 good years, but everything still felt and looked the same. After all those years of traveling around the world, the sense of nostalgia She felt was truly overwhelming. The bad memories she’d run from also scraped the surface. But now she was a different person, and bad memories wouldn’t make her crumble anymore.Astrid had been horrified at her plan to stay in a hotel for the first few weeks, a traveling habit Scarlett didn’t think much of. It was weird that her online psychologist recommended her an apartment that was available on short notice, but Astrid was fast becoming a friend, something Scarlett lacked. The building in front of her reflected how much Astrid had come to know her. An apartment near the sea, with the most beautiful blend of calming colors, nothing like her own life, which wasn’t calm or colorful. Scarlett took a deep breath and listened for the distant, but serene sound of the beach behind her new apartment, the cool breeze ruffled her lusc
Mateo kicked a stray stone off the sidewalk as he slowed his pace down to a strut. His breath came in heavy puffs, and he couldn’t feel his heartbeat from the bass of his earphones. He stopped and settled on his favorite park bench close to the huge mahogany which often served as a shade. Just a few more miles and he’d be home.A gentle smile stretched his lips as he recalled Brianna’s perplexed expression when he informed her of his plan to go for a run. It was against his normal schedule which consisted of only morning runs, but Mateo knew he needed this today. He was acting weird lately. He knew. Richard had pointed it out and Brianna always watched him with keen suspicious eyes. He zoned out a lot, often lost in his mind. Not to mention, the repetitive dreams he’d been having for some time now. Who was the woman that repeatedly appeared in his dreams?Mateo never saw her face. It was always her back and her long, shimmering, flowing blonde hair. No matter how familiar she felt, h
Scarlett was harshly jolted from her reverie when a loud knock sounded on her door. When she stood up to answer, she spotted her horrifying appearance in the mirror opposite her bed. No way in hell was she going to answer the door looking like that, especially being new here and wanting to make a good first impression. Sending a silent sorry to the person behind the door, Scarlett quickly freshened up. The knock persisted without pauses in between. Weird. She washed her face and changed into a light blue handmade gown she’d gotten from a craft market in Thailand. It was a simple A-line gown made with the softest and best quality wool she’d ever seen. The young girl who made and sold it to her probably wasn’t up to fifteen and had such impressive talent and skill. Scarlett finally made her way to the door while tying her hair in a loose bun wondering who it could be. She didn’t know who she was expecting, but she wasn’t expecting a tall handsome guy with blonde hair and green eyes, a
The week flew by before Scarlett could blink. She was settling into her new environment and getting everything she needed. She’d gotten a car, a TV set which she loved, and more canvas. Everything was falling into place.. except her heart. Throughout, Scarlett assured herself that she wasn’t avoiding Mateo, just staying away. And that she could successfully live here and still stay away from him. That Sunday night, after dinner in her apartment, she finally exchanged numbers with Brianna, so they texted every now and then. She stopped asking Bri, but she always wondered where Mateo was and what exactly he was doing. On Friday morning, Scarlett woke up to a text from Brianna, asking if she was up for a girl’s day out on Saturday. Of course, she was. It was a girl’s day out so it meant no boys, right? No Richard or… Mateo. The knowledge didn’t make her feel as good as she expected, but her rational side who knew what was good was relieved.By evening the next day, Scarlett was certain
Scarlett woke up with a start. At first, she was struggling to breathe properly, and her voice was nowhere to be found. She struggled to breathe and cold sweat drenched the Coca-Cola t-shirt she’d worn to bed. She calmed down soon enough as she realized it was just a nightmare. It had been too vivid this time. No matter how many times she went through this, or had this particular dream amongst others, she still went through the painful motions like it was the first time. The pure terror she always felt, the shaking, the tears. Her dreams always felt new and real, always accompanied by sleep paralysis too.The Nightmares were a normal occurrence. on a night where she doesn’t have one, she’d be surprised to wake up like a normal person and not shake while drenched in sweat, or paralyzed with pure terror. The nightmares started when she was a teen, and slowly got worse and gory over the years. But she could never get used to it.In the dreams she had sometimes, the memories or visions
Scarlett made sure she locked her front door properly. After confirming it a few more times, she nodded in satisfaction. It was a habit she’d gained from traveling around. She was holding Brianna's bowl and contemplating if it was a wrong decision to return it at that time. She stared at the door opposite hers for a long time thinking and she almost jumped out of her skin when it opened to reveal a disheveled Brianna. “Hi,” she squeaked.“Oh hi Scar,” Brianna said letting out a yawn. From her mannerisms, Scarlett could tell she’d just woken up. Her thick curls were covered in large black silk bonnets, and she was wearing pajamas. Scarlett noted that she was also holding a black bag of what Scarlett guessed would be trash. “I wanted to return the bowl, but I was still contemplating because of how early it is,” she rambled on, “And I didn’t want to disturb you.” “Ohh,” Brianna smiled sheepishly, stretching her hands out for the bowl. “Thanks,” she turned inside, keeping the bowl on
Scarlett started to pick up her rhythm after she left the antique shop. The snow had stopped a few minutes after it started. She continued to cry though. Tears blurred her vision and she had to slow her pace. She couldn't stop the sobs.People stared but she didn't care. Her heart was broken into a million pieces ever since she heard the story of how Hakeem died. Over the years she'd learned that it was possible to feel emotional pain physically, and that's what she was feeling now.Her heart was hurting. He died. What if history repeated itself? Scarlett jerked to stop, wiping her tears furiously and shaking her head, "I won't let that happen." When she looked up again to continue her run, she couldn't believe her eyes.If someone told Scarlett that she’d died and gone to heaven, she would believe it. She couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Or who.Hakeem.In the flesh. Was this a dream? She looked around her to make sure it wasn't a dream. Even going as far as pinching her c
Mateo walked in rhythm with Bri. She wanted to call for a taxi but he suggested they walk to the grocery store, it was just 20 minutes away and he wanted to clear his head and organize his thoughts.Something was bothering him but he didn't know what it was. He knew it was connected to the woman in his dreams. He felt like he was missing out on something important. The main part that completed the puzzle. His mind kept flashing to the dreams he'd been having that always felt too real to be a dream. For some reason, the woman in his dream felt familiar. Like she was someone he knew well and had been waiting for. But he never saw her face, and even when he did he never remembered it when he woke up.He knew this whole fiasco was connected to a dream he had a few years ago about a promise, for some reason every dream about this particular woman always stood out because they were dreams but didn't feel like one.Another clue he had was how he felt whenever it snowed. He didn't know anyt
At first, when she started getting the dreams, she’d been happy thinking it was normal. Even before the dreams, she was a loner and never had any friends. So whenever loneliness crept in, she looked forward to sleeping…. and dreaming. When she was 13, she met a monk. She was compelled to find answers to what was happening to her, so she consulted with him. He explained that what she was seeing was indeed, her past life. He explained that sometimes when people are reincarnated, they come with memories of their past life because they still have something to do. When she asked him if it was normal, he just looked at her like she had two heads. It only happened to one in millions of people. It wasn’t normal.Apparently, since she had regrets, or yearned for someone from her past, the past life intrudes on the current life, until something soothes it. The monk asked her if she remembered anything about a regret, an oath, a promise, an unfinished task, or just something important she h
Scarlett stood staring at the ring, her heart palpitating in her chest. This was the first time she'd seen any physical evidence of her past life. It was nerve-wracking, to say the least, because it meant everything was real. Scarlett's mind protested as she walked into the shop, and walked closer to where the ring was, but her heart persisted. She didn’t hear the bells that dinged as she walked through, nor did she see the shop assistant standing beside her. It was as though she was bewitched by the ring . It was disconcerting to people who knew Scarlett had connections to her past life, but she’s never really wanted or willed it to stop. It was a part of her she loved and hated. It kept her company when she felt lonely. She was happy to have received so much love, even if it was her past life. And If she was given the chance, she’d still meet Hakeem in this life. It was silly how in love she was with a man she’d never met.But at the same time, it tormented her, that's why she ha
“C’mon get up!” Brianna said in a loud singsong voice very close to Mateo’s ear, intending to wake him up, Mateo thought.“Ughh!” Mateo’s voice sounded muffled because he buried his head in his pillow groaning, Brianna was such a morning person and he was the complete opposite. If he was given the chance, he would sleep throughout the day and stay awake all night. He was nocturnal.“It’s snowing!” Brianna exclaimed.“So?” He said in a casual voice, but he knew she noticed the subtle stiffening of his shoulders, she was very observant.Brianna huffed not buying his nonchalant attitude, “You always mop around like a grieving widower on the day of the first snow, I just want to let you know you’re not doing that today,” she said, “it isn’t snowing yet though, but it will soon.”“Just leave me alone Bri.” He groaned, turning away from her, and folding into a fetal position.“C’mon get up,” she nudged him, and when he didn’t budge she said, “I’ll tell Richard about that time!” She said in
