Adina’s POV
Adina was sitting in the back seat of the car with Sean. She looked out the window, grateful that the move wouldn’t be taking her so far away this time. Adina hated spending a long time in a car. It made her nauseous, and that made her bad-tempered.
She watched the nature that passed by and wondered if she shouldn’t be doing something useful instead. Adina had found some interesting papers online that she wanted to read.
Although her unique upbringing had made it impossible for her to stay at one school, she had taken her education seriously. She was supposed to help people, and she needed the knowledge to do so. After finishing high school, she took her college and university courses online.
This had the advantage of her being able to work on two different degrees at once. She held a degree in business analyses and one in medicine. Although she was not a doctor, as she couldn’t partake in the internships, she had taken all the courses, even the practical ones. She had a natural healing ability and found her knowledge of medicine to be helpful. Even though both vampire and werewolf anatomy differed greatly from the human.
Sean moved in the seat next to her, making her look at him. She smiled as she saw a little puddle of drool on his shirt. He could sleep anywhere, anytime. Sean had been with her since she was ten years old and he was thirteen.
Her council had introduced him as her protector and since that day, he had hardly ever left her side. She was grateful for the one constant in her life.
Not to say that they didn’t fight. Sean was a werewolf just as she was, and he came from an alpha line. He was not the eldest son, but he had the alpha genes. He was supposed to protect her and in his mind, that meant she was supposed to obey him. She was the Beloved One. She bowed to no one and took no orders.
This had caused them to butt heads more than a few times. Finally, they had agreed that Adina was in charge until there was a situation that was a direct threat to her. Then Sean was the one calling the shots. Fortunately, this had not occurred too often, but on the few occasions that it had been necessary, she had listened to Sean without arguing.
There was a time when she had hoped that Sean would be her mate. She had had a teenage crush on him. But her eighteenth birthday had come and gone and no mate was in sight. Sean would have been okay with her lifestyle. He already knew everything about her.
But now she was afraid that when, or if, she met her mate, she would have to let him go. Not everyone could handle the cold facts of her life. She sighed and resumed to watch the nature go by.
The car was stopped briefly by a couple of werewolves that checked who they were before sending them toward their pack house. Adina looked out of the window and after driving through thick forest for a while, there was a space opening up in front of them.
On the side closest to them, there was a magnificent building. It was made in grey stonework, it’s outside blending from dark grey, almost black, to light grey. She could see other buildings spread out throughout the clearing. They had arrived.
Colin’s POV
Colin had gotten the information that the guests’ vehicles had entered their territory, and he went downstairs to greet them. He was not in a good mood. His wolf had been restless all day and not even a run in the forest before breakfast had made him calm down.
Colin scratched his neck, aware it was not an actual itch. He looked for the cars and questioning once again why he had agreed to this. The smart choice had been to turn them down. Aries had pointed out that Colin had the right to say no several times.
Colin had planned to say no, it was just an inconvenience. But he had said yes. Maybe the story of the young girl losing her parents, having to shoulder a responsibility far too early, made him feel a kinship with her. Maybe he was becoming weak, or mentally soft. Either way, he didn’t like it.
The cars pulled up in front of him; he was flanked by Mateo and Jason. They, and the rest of the pack, had been told they would give refuge to a couple of important guests for a while. Technically, it was the truth, but Colin hated not being able to tell his closest men everything. But he also knew it was for their own best.
Aries exited the first car and came over to greet him. From the second car, Colin saw a tall werewolf exited. Not as tall as himself, but not far off. The man was built like a wall and looked to be well trained.
His brown hair was shoulder length, with braids going back from his face to keep the hair back. The man studied his surroundings for a while before turning towards the car. This must be the bodyguard, Colin thought.
That was the last coherent thought he had before a scent filled his nose and then his entire being. It was the scent of lilacs and lemons and he desperately searched for the origin of the scent, his wolf so excited that it took all Colin’s willpower not to let him take control.
Then he saw the bodyguard extending his hand, helping a woman out of the car. It was the most beautiful woman Colin had ever seen.
She had light blond hair; it was held in a simple braid that now was slung over her shoulder. She had a curvy body that made Colin’s blood boil. Dressed in a pair of tight, ripped, blue jeans, a white, tight tank top and a plaid shirt that hung unbuttoned, she stretched, making Colin take in every ripple of her muscles.
Before he knew it, he was heading straight for her. He saw her freeze in the middle of the stretch. Her eyes grew bigger and then started searching for something before locking into his own eyes. The look almost knocked him down as she stared at him with the most amazing pale green eyes. He stopped just a couple of inches in front of her.
“Mate,” he growled.
Adina’s POV
Adina got out of the car after Sean had given her an all clear. She stretched her stiff muscles and took in a deep breath. The scent hit her like a ton of bricks. Apples and freshly ground coffee.
Her eyes looked for the source, she saw the man that was coming straight towards her, and her eyes locked with his icy grey ones. He stopped a few inches in front of her and she took him in. His black hair was thick and in an untamed hairstyle. Like he had spent the day running his hands through it.
He had a face that looked to be chiselled from stone and it made her heart skip a beat. He was tall. She was 5,8” but he was hovering above her, looking down at her.
“Mate,” she heard him growl and something grabbed her in the vicinity of her heart.
She was not expecting this and was not prepared. She took two rapid steps back and would have continued if the car didn’t block her way. Sean, seeing her backing away, took a step and placed himself between her and the male in front of her. This did not go down well with her mate. He finally broke eye contact with her to stare at Sean.
“Step aside” the male said and Adina could hear the alpha command coming through strong.
Sean had been trained to withstand the command of alphas and didn’t even flinch as it rolled over him. This made her mate a bit confused. She could see it in the way he looked at Sean. But it also made him angrier.
“Step aside and let me get through to my mate or I will rip every limb from your body,” he growled at Sean. Sean growled back. It was a straightforward answer that he would not move.
Adina could see that the situation was going to get out of hand. Both men in front of her had gone into protection mode over her. Both were powerful, and they had enough of an aura to stop anyone else interfering. Adina realized she needed to do something before they drew blood.
If it came to that, one of them would end up dead. She took a deep breath. Took a step around Sean, mind linking with him to tell him to stand down and got a roaring objection back before she blocked him out to focus on the man in front of her.
Colin’s POV
The bodyguard had blocked Colin’s way to his mate and Colin’s wolf was going crazy. He tried to threaten the man, but he just growled back. Despite his anger and the need to rip the man apart, Colin felt a curiosity about how the man could withstand Colin’s alpha command.
He knew he had a powerful command and no one except full alphas had ever withstood it. As Colin prepared to tear into the man, he was interrupted by his mate stepping around her bodyguard and smiling up at him.
“My name is Adinalaka, but please call me Adina. You must be alpha Colin. Pleased to meet you. We appreciate you opening up our pack to let us stay,” she said and then she smiled at him and all of Colin’s anger rolled off him, and he smiled back at her.
“Please call me Colin, it is our pleasure,” he replied and held out his hand for her to place hers in.
She placed one of her hands in his, and it looked so small and fragile. He closed his own hand around it and turned around to lead her toward the pack house.
He registered how everyone else looked at them with concerning eyes. There was tension in the air, but Colin could only focus on how nice it felt having her hand in his. He wanted to give her hand a tug and bring her to his body so he could wrap his arm around her waist. But he tried to control the feeling.
He had seen the hesitation in her eyes as he claimed her as his mate. They needed to talk about that. But for now, he could be satisfied with her hand in his, her bodyguard out of his way, and him presenting his future luna to his two closest friends.
“Adina, let me introduce my beta Mateo, and gamma Jason,” Colin said when they got to the little group of men standing in front of the pack house. They bowed their heads to her.
“A pleasure,” Adina said, still smiling. “Let me introduce my bodyguard, this is Sean,” she said, putting her free hand on the shoulder of her bodyguard that now had come up to stand on the opposite side of her.
Sean inclined his head in a small bow. Colin saw Mateo and Jason exchange a surprised look. He had not told them about the bodyguard. It was not a common practice amongst werewolves, so the surprise was warranted.
“Adina and I need to have a talk,” Colin said and gently pulled on her hand to make her follow him.
He was pleased that she did so without hesitation. He was heading for his apartment, no their apartment, he corrected himself, on the fourth floor of the pack house. There, they could have some privacy to get to know each other. Intimately, his wolf growled and Colin felt his pulse pick up.
He realized he should slow down. He usually adapted his pace to match people around him. His long legs and the restlessness of his wolf meant he naturally had a speed to his steps that few could keep up with. But to his surprise, Adina kept up with him without effort.
He looked down at the woman walking beside him as they started up the first stairs. She seemed to be lost in her own thought, not looking around at the unfamiliar settings. She kept her gaze straight ahead, content to let him lead the way.
They reached the fourth floor, and Colin went towards the bedroom. Once again, he let the pack know the floor was now off bounds. He was just about to open the door when he realized that Adina and he were not alone.
He spun around and saw Sean, the bodyguard, standing behind Adina. Anger rose through his veins. He was going to hurt that man; he thought.
“This is the alpha’s private floor. You can wait with the others,” he said to him.
Sean’s expression didn’t change. He had a neutral expression when he shrugged his shoulders and spoke.
“I go where she goes,” indicating Adina. Colin gritted his teeth and growled from his stomach.
“Adina and I are going into our bedroom. You will not be joining us,” Colin said in a low voice that dripped with the threat of physical injuries.
His words were answered by another shrug from Sean. That was the last drop for Colin. He felt his raging wolf taking over.
Adina’s POVAs she followed Colin up the stairs, she got a mind link from Cernack.‘Is it true?’ he asked.‘It is,’ she answered, not wanting to talk about it with anyone just yet.‘This is a problem,’ he replied, and she felt anger rise. No, she couldn’t afford to lose her cool just now. She could feel Colin’s and Sean’s anger bubbling just under the surface of them both. She didn’t want bloodshed on their first day here. The first day with her mate. The idea was still foreign to her, but the feeling of magic gently moving over her skin where he touched her told her this was no mistake. She blocked out Cernack.Colin stopped in front of a door, his bedroom apparently, but once again, Colin and Sean squared off. Adina looked at Colin and could see that his eyes shifted from their light grey colour to a deep orange. He was losing control to his wolf; she realized. She once again stepped in between the two men, this time turning her back towards Colin, without letting go of his hand.“W
Adina’s POVAs the cars drove away, Adina turned to Mateo and Jason.“Is it okay if I borrow your alpha for an hour or two?” she asked. They both tried their best not to smirk.“Of course, luna” Mateo said, startling Adina by using the title she would hold if she was to stay in the pack.“Okay you two, kitchen,” she said to Colin and Sean, making it clear this was not a request.Colin closed the distance to her and let his arm slip around her waist as they walked. It was a nice habit, Adina thought. Sean was walking behind her on her other side. As they entered the kitchen, she pointed at the island where they had been sitting eating their lunch.“Sit,” she said, waiting for them to comply.Colin hesitated. Adina understood. He was an alpha. He didn’t take orders.“Please,” she added with a smile. This made Colin move to take a seat. Adina went around the counter, placing herself separate from the two men.“We need to solve this, whatever this is, between the two of you. Sean and I wi
Adina’s POVThe village was beautiful, the small houses were well maintained, as were the roads and everything else. She could see from the pack’s reaction to Colin’s presence that he was a good alpha. They showed him respect, but there was no fear in their faces. It made Adina proud of her mate.“Over there is the school. We have everything from day-care for the pups to a local college,” Colin said and sounded proud. Adina looked over to where he pointed and saw a separate group of buildings. It almost looked like a separate village.“You mix all the different grades in one place?” she asked.“Yes, and no. They all are placed together, but they all have separate houses. But it helps build a pack community and gives an opportunity to teach the older kids and teenagers that they should care for even the younger and weaker members of the pack,” Colin explained and Adina nodded. She got the concept and thought it was a good one. They had stopped at the end of the main street and stood th
Adina’s POVAs Colin left the room with a wink, Adina couldn’t keep herself from laughing. She looked at her clothes and felt uncertain if she could let him buy her more. Her wolf was very certain that they could.Adina’s lack of clothing wasn’t due to not having the money to shop. She was not poor by any means. And she enjoyed shopping, she liked clothes. When she was a teenager, she would go on shopping sprees and fill her closet. But when it was time to move, she always ended up giving most of it away, as she was too practical to add so many suitcases. Most of the things she ended up giving away or donating she hadn’t even used. In the end, it was just depressing and caused her stress, so she just got used to having a basic wardrobe. But Colin seemed thrilled with the thought of sending her shopping. She could go and just buy a couple of jeans and some t-shirts. Adina liked that idea. Then Colin would get his shopping trip. She could bond with Julia, whom she really liked. And she
As the introductions were finished, they moved into the smaller dining room, with Colin and Adina leading the way. Colin showed Adina to her seat next to him at the head of the table. Sean sat to her right and the rest of the guests placed themselves at the table. The mood was friendly; the food was splendid, and Colin made sure Adina felt included in the conversation. This made Adina relax, and she found herself having fun. She and Julia talked about books that they both had read and Colin and Mateo even got Sean into a conversation with Jason.“You seem to be happy,” Colin whispered in Adina’s ear. She smiled at him.“I am having fun,” she admitted.“I knew you would. You are home,” he said, satisfied, letting his arm draped around her shoulders.Adina gave him a small smile and gently shook her head. This was not the time and place to have that discussion. At this moment, she was happy to be sitting with her mate’s arm around her, listening to Sean’s voice was relaxed and surrounde
Adina’s POVAdina woke up feeling safe and relaxed. As the world slowly came back into focus, she realised she was still in Colin’s arms. The realisation made her smile and look up at him. He was already awake, looking down at her.“Good morning,” he said.“Morning,” she answered and tried to stretch, but found Colin held her too tightly. She gave him a soft push. “I need to stretch,” she told him.“No can do, I’m not going to release you now that I got you into my bed,” he said.“Not fair. I always stretch first thing in the morning. It’s one of my favourite parts of the day,” she said with a pretend pout.Colin sighed and relaxed his embrace, and Adina could finally put her arms over her head and let the muscles tense and then relax. When she opened her eyes, she saw Colin letting his eyes trace the length of her body. She realised her nightgown had risen and had made her legs bare, almost exposing her panties. Before she could reach down to pull it down, Colin made eye contact with
Colin’s POVThe rogues had nothing to do with Adina, Colin was almost certain of it. He had spent most of the morning questioning them. The two rogues were in bad luck. After being interrupted from his morning with Adina, Colin had a lot of frustration to get rid of. After feeling satisfied that he got all the information he could from the rogues, he had killed them. Two single rogues were at no risk to his pack. Most rogues weren’t. But sometimes rogues banded together in larger groups. Then you had a serious problem. He knew this from experience. It was a lesson he didn’t need to be taught twice. To be on the safe side, he didn’t want the two rogues to go free. He couldn’t be a hundred percent certain that the two of them didn’t work for someone else or had banded together. Better to be safe than sorry. His priority was the safety of Adina and the pack.“I know the luna and Sean came here for protection. What are we protecting them from? Do we have a rogue army issue?” Mateo asked C
Colin’s POVThe news that Doc had given them was indeed bad. Colin would take on hordes of rogues instead of this type of issue. Rogues he could at least do something about.Something like a sick pup just made him feel helpless. It had surprised him that Adina had asked to help the boy. But hadn’t Aries said something about her having medical knowledge? Colin had been so proud of how she had handled Mrs Morgan. A true Luna. Now she stood bent over the boy and had placed both of her hands on his little body. Colin’s eyes grew bigger as a soft yellow light started spreading from Adina’s hands. Mrs Morgan drew in a sharp breath, and he placed a hand on her shoulder. Whatever Adina was doing, he had a feeling they shouldn’t interrupt it.He watched how his mate’s hands glowed and how her face looked serene. She was always beautiful, but as he looked at her now; Adina looked like an angel. She stayed that way for almost five minutes and then the light admitting from her hand slowly disappe
Jouko stood up and tried to look like he wasn’t half starving. He bowed towards the gods and the jury. “My lord, my lady,” he addressed the gods. “The things that you have been told here today have been taken out of context and twisted to make them seem like something they are not,” he continued. “I am happy to hear that. Could you put things in the right context, please?” Absalom said. “With pleasure, my lord. In the last five generations the Beloved One have been showing signs of weakness that, quite frankly, is dangerous,” Jouko said. “How’s that?” Selene asked. “They have been more restricting when it comes to interactions with humans. We have fewer ways to express our true nature. The council has put laws and restrictions in place to protect the weak humans from us. It’s a threat to my race,” Jouko told her. “The Beloved One, would you like to respond?” Absalom asked. “I would, thank you,” Adina said, standing up. She didn’t walk toward the gods or the vampire. She stood b
Colin’s POV It had been a month since the battle. The pack was in one place again. Colin, Adina, Sean and Clara and Julia had all gone to the dryads to thank them for watching over their pack members. Despite losing some of their pack members in the battle, the pack had stayed strong and as word got out that the Beloved One lived in the pack, they had gotten a lot of attention. The pack had taken it in stride. They were proud of their luna. Colin was proud of his pack and of his two mates. Today was the day for the trial and they would once again go to the dryads’ land. The only way to let them take part in the trial was to hold it on or near their land. The local tribe had generously offered to host the event. Each race had selected five representatives, except for humans that were peacefully unaware of the whole thing. The enemy vampires and the rogues had been allowed to choose three individuals each to represent them at the trial. The trial would be open to leaders of the race
Adina’s POV“Hello, mother. I’m fine, a little more tired than usual. But I’m perfectly fine to eat lunch with the pack,” Sean said.“You know Adina, and this is my other mate, alpha Colin. Colin, this is my mother and Tia,” Sean introduced them.“Mrs Murphy, Tia,” Colin nodded.“Alpha Colin,” both women said with a bow.Adina didn’t like that Sean’s mother hadn’t offered Colin to call her by her first name. It was a clear sign she didn’t accept him as her son’s mate. Adina felt both her mates tense up.“Would you like something to eat? You have had a long journey,” Adina asked.Sean’s mother looked at her and it wasn’t a hostile look, but it was cold and accusing. Adina had no doubt that Sean’s mother saw her as the reason her son had almost been killed. It was enough hostility in her eyes for both Colin and Sean to stand up and move closer to Adina.“No thank you, we ate on the way,” Sean’s mother told her.Adina saw it wasn’t just her mates that was reacting to the presence of the
Sean’s POV“So she brought Tia with her,” Adina sighed. It wasn’t a question.Sean growled, and he felt Colin tense up and growl as well.“That can be an issue,” Adina admitted.“Both Colin and I are more protective than usual, as you can understand,” Adina added.“I understand,” Liam nodded.“That goes for the pack as well. We have just been through a major battle, and they almost lost Sean. If they find out someone is trying to take him away, that individual will not have a peaceful time in this pack,” Colin said.“I get that, and if you allow her to visit, I will make that clear to her. I have talked to her after your visit and she knows she was in the wrong,” Liam said.“We will let them in. Sean’s mother should be able to see him,” Adina said.“Baby cake, that isn’t necessary,” Sean objected.“I have no issue turning them away,” Colin agreed.“But I do. Are you going to argue with me?” Adina asked.“No, baby,” Colin sighed.“You are too stubborn and kind-hearted for your own good
Sean’s POVSean was slowly gaining consciousness. He felt tired; it wasn’t the kind of tired he usually got after a long day. This was tired like as if he wasn’t lying down, he would probably have ended up in a pile on the floor. He had a faint recollection of being injured; he had a clear memory of wanting to see Adina one last time. Was he alive? He pondered as he focused. He could feel someone having their hand on his arm and someone was holding his hand. Sean could feel the sparkles that ran over his skin. His brain got a little clearer, and he smelt the scent of his mates. He opened his eyes and looked to his left.Besides the bed he was lying in, Colin sat in an armchair with a sleeping Adina in his lap. Adina was holding Sean’s hand in hers, even in her sleep, and Colin had his hand on Sean’s arm.Sean met Colin’s eye and Colin smiled.‘Welcome back,’ Colin mind linked Sean and squeezed his arm.‘Thank you. Where have I been?’ Sean asked.‘Out of it. You are in big trouble, my
Colin’s POVColin watched Adina work. Her eyes were closed, and she had her hands on Sean’s body. There was a steady trickling of silver coming out of is wound and into the basin.Clara came walking into the room with Jason. Jason went pale when he saw Sean. Clara swallowed hard but continued to walk up to the gurney. Before Colin knew it, he had emitted a low growl as a warning. His wolf was just under the surface and saw both his mates being vulnerable and he reacted out of instinct.“Sorry,” he said to Clara. She had frozen in the spot as he growled, and Jason had moved between his friend and his mate. “Go ahead, just go slow and don’t do any sudden movements,” Colin tried to smile at them. They had decided that Clara should stay in the shelter during the attack in case something went wrong, and Doc had been injured during the attack. Clara hadn’t been happy about it, but it was the prudent thing to do as they now had two doctors in the pack. She now carefully looked over Sean’s i
Adina’s POVThe enemies in front of Adina parted to let a tall woman through. She was slender and had short midnight black hair and brown eyes that was filled with hatred and loathing.“Diedre, I presume,” Adina smirked.“Adina, cousin,” the woman smiled. But Adina could tell that she wasn’t pleased that Adina had known her name.“It’s time to stop this, Diedre. You will never have my title and you most definitely won’t have my powers,” Adina said.“Why would we stop when we are winning?” Diedre asked. Adina laughed, but it was a laugh void of all amusement.“You are more delusional than I thought, cousin. Let’s stop this unnecessary killing and part ways,” Adina said.“I’m not the one with a mate that is more dead than alive,” Dierdre smirked. Both Colin and Adina growled at her.“You may not be, but you are the one with a fast-depleting army. Do you think these are the only warriors that will fight in my name? Magical creatures from around the world is standing by to send us backup.
Sean’s POVSean knew he needed to get his men over to Colin as soon as possible. If what Adina said was true and the main vampire force was heading there, Colin and his men would be in trouble. He shifted back to his human form for a moment to give orders to the surrounding warriors. He was still amazed at how many warriors Adina had rounded up. Sean had a good idea about how she had done it. They would have a conversation about that when this was over.“I need half of you to stay here, half of you need to come with me. We have a large number of vampires moving towards team A’s position. We will offer them support,” Sean told them. Sean’s brother shifted back to his human form next to Sean.“We will follow you,” he told Sean, and Sean nodded. He had been surprised when he saw his brother come sprinting through the woods. But he was grateful that he and his warriors had joined them.Sean shifted back to his wolf and then he was off. He mind linked Jason and Mateo to make sure they knew
Adina’s POVAdina walked down into the shelter for the second time. She knew what she needed to do. She also knew her mates would have refused to let her do it. That is why she hadn’t told them about it. She felt a little guilty for that. But not so much that she wouldn’t do it.She stopped by the monitoring station and had a look. It was too early to get a sense for the battle of the numbers. But at least things looked to start off on a smaller scale. Adina was afraid that the enemies were just testing the waters.‘We are under attack, we need our allies on site now,’ Adina mind linked Cernack.‘Are you safe, my lady?’ he asked.‘I am, but my mates and my pack aren’t. I want the council, all of the council, to call in favours where we can. I want all the warriors that we wan get to be ready. If we have allies that are more than an hour's drive away that are willing to help, let me know,’ Adina said.‘Yes, my lady,’ Cernack said.Adina turned to her two friends and smiled.“I’m going
