Rion didn't even blink from where he was towering in front of Ruby like an unmovable, protective mountain. He faced the celestial demon in front of him without any expression. He didn't look scared, nor did he look smug and overconfident of his own capability. His face was unreadable, and he wanted to keep it that way.
Rion had heard a lot of stories about the celestial demon ancestry and descendant when he went on trips for demon hunting. He read a lot of information about it too in many books and texts he got his hands on during those trips. That was the reason why, even if it was the first time he met this celestial demon in front of him, Rion could guess precisely who he was facing right now.
The celestial demon's dark hair and deep blue eyes. Her icy countenance, as well as the freezing wind around her. The frozen grasses where she was standing with a layer of ice already forming and crackling under her feet. The dark blue color of a celestial demon mark pulsing between her brows. Rion was familiar with all these traits of the celestial demon in front of him.
She was the new ruler of the northern demon realm, Valienne
Rion had heard about the power struggle in the northern part of the demon realm. As well as the issue about the reign of the northern demon realm had been taken away from the previous demon lord by his own daughter, which means this new demon lord had killed her own father to take over the reign because Rion had heard that the previous ruler refused to pass the throne to any of his children with the reason that they were still too 'young and naive'.
So much for being too young and naive that the said children ended up proving it by taking his head.
Rion wasn't too familiar with the demon's custom, but looking back to their history, it might be in their culture to solve the problem with blunt forces and power. No matter if it was their family or friends, as long as they were in the way, demons wouldn't hesitate to grind them into dust.
Now, this young and new ruler stood up in front of Rion, and demanded him to hand over his own apprentice?
The corner of Rion's mouth twitched in irritation, despite his effort to stay expressionless. With a controlled voice, he spoke slowly,
"May this one guess if all of these demons running havoc in the competition right now was of the esteemed demon's initiation?"
Valienne cocked her head slightly. An amused little smile still on her faintly painted lips. "Why would you think of such a thing?"
Why? Rion narrowed his eyes slightly. Because all these ancient and powerful demons appeared and attacked the young apprentices in the biggest competition in the Human Realm couldn't be such a coincidence, could it?
Rion thought about the talk they had done on Liebu mountain. The emperor's intention was to use this competition as a medium to find out what the demons were exactly initiating for.
And the answer was right in front of him now.
They wanted to take the apprentice with them. And not just any apprentice. They wanted to take Rion's apprentice.
Rion couldn't stop himself from glancing briefly over his shoulder. Ruby was still crouching in pain behind him, clutching her head. The violent dark red energy starting to emit from her body, seeping and bleeding like violent swirls of invisible water surrounding her.
"If it wasn't your ladyship's intention, then is all of this only some kind of coincidence?" Rion asked back with a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
"Who knows?" Valienne shrugged indifferently. "Besides, wasn't it your side who used demons as a tool to improve your strength? You humans captured the demons and display them in this enclosed space for your children to hunt and kill. Yet, when the demons countered and killed those children, you are angry? I thought humans were all about fairness and peace, am I wrong?"
"All the demons here were those who crossed the borders into the Human Realm and attacked innocent people. It is their punishment to be executed."
Valienne scoffed. "And what's the difference between them and the apprentice behind you?"
"Ruby is not the same as you or any other demons," Rion gritted.
"She has demon's blood in her veins." Valienne pointed out. "It is not to your decision if she should stay or should come back to the Demon Realm."
"She is my apprentice," Rion said, his voice tethered dangerously into a snarl. "I would never hand her to the demons."
"That is not a problem for me." Valienne stretched her right hand to the side with an open palm. "Either you would hand her over willingly or not, I would still drag her into the Demon Realm."
The air around the young demon lord was stirring with a mix of demonic energy. It condensed and thickened. Half a second later, she had a glassy sword in her right hand, seemingly she pulled out of the empty air.
"Valienne Vox, the ruler of the northern demon realm," she said with a frosty expression on her face. "It's considered a courtesy in the Human Realm to tell your name to the enemy you will kill, isn't it?"
Rion gave her a brief, tight smile. He crossed the sword he held in front of his body. "It indeed is the case. But I must apologize because I will not die here."
"Good. I hope your confidence will not disappoint me," Valienne said.
Rion took a deep breath, burning the energy in his body a little and feeling the hum of his energy in the surrounding air, the readiness of it to defend or attack. "This Rion Ren is from Liebu Mountain. And I will not let you touch even a strand of hair of my apprentice."
"Hmph." Valienne narrowed her eyes. "So you are one of those famous sword masters in the Human Realm. What a fortunate day."
Valienne indeed was a new ruler of the northern demon realm, but the matter between the human realm and demon realm wasn't a new thing anymore to her. As someone who prepared to take over the reign from a young age, Valienne learned a lot of things that happened in both realms. Including those who were powerful enough that had the potential to change the world.
Rion Ren was certainly not an unfamiliar name to her.
This is a great opportunity for her to raise her name in the eyes of those demon nobles. As a new ruler, Valienne's position was still a little shaky, and many of those annoying demon nobles were doubtful of her capability.
If she killed Rion Ren here and bring back the descendant of the southern demon realm's true ruler, she could use it to strengthen her position right now and boost her reputation. On a side note, she also could that little descendant of demon sovereign behind Rion as an assurance to get the support from the southern demon realm.
One stone to kill two birds.
Without any further delay, Valienne surged forward and aimed her sword at Rion.
Valienne lunged at him with the ice sword glaring sharply in her hand beneath the sunlight. At the same time, the layer of frost beneath her feet was crackling dangerously fast towards Rion.Rion jumped away to evade the attack instinctively before he remembered Ruby was still behind him and needed protection. He hastily formed a seal with one hand and waved a protective barrier around his apprentice. The surge of ice cracked loudly and dispersed into crystal-like flakes upon colliding with the barrier he put around Ruby."You're not going to put a single hand on her hair before you defeat me," Rion said.Valienne retreated her sword from where she was slashing the barrier down to no avail. She turned to Rion with her impassive face. "Fair enough."Valienne suddenly disappeared, and in the next second, she showed up in front of Rion. He didn't even have the chance to blink as he reflexively raised his sword to deflect Valienne's attack. He realized Valienne didn't use her teleportatio
The next time their sword collided, Rion raised his sword and felt the brimming of spirit energy flowing smoothly throughout his body before it settled and he channeled it onto his sword. When the metal and ice sword met in the air, the demonic energy and spirit energy also smashed against each other. Its huge impact created a big explosion between those two different species of individuals.Valienne gritted her teeth and tried to stand on her feet when that blast of mixed energies hit her twice stronger than the energy she let out. But no matter how much she tried to stay, the impact still threw her balance off and blew her several meters away. The blast of their mixed energies not only affected both of them but also the surrounding area. Rion didn't have the time to dodge or jump away before the blast, so he settled in forming a protective barrier around himself to prevent the impact from those energies from hurling him away like a puppet with its string cut. When the wind stopped a
Rion's sword stroke in a swift movement downward, aiming the celestial ice demon's heart to kill her once and for all. The move of the blade was almost impossible to follow with human eyes, but Valienne was not a human. Her eyes were wide open, watching the tip of the sword gleaming toward her heart. Then his sword pricked a layer of ice, and couldn't move further. The layer of ice that covered Valienne's chest was thin, but it was very strong and had a peculiar dark blue color that swirled on the surface. The color was similar to Valienne's eyes. Frost rose and crackling rapidly along Rion's blade. He also felt a sharp prick of cold on his skin where he made contact with Valienne's body even through the layer of clothes he wore and the spirit energy that naturally flowed throughout his body.A new ice sword materialized in Valienne's left hand. Rion jerked back violently to evade the attack, releasing his hold on the celestial demon. He managed to avoid getting his neck cut. Instead,
Rion reached out one of his hand although he knew the distance between him and Valienne was simply too far. Desperate and outraged, he shouted harshly,"ZEPHYR!!!"The sword swoop down sharply as a response to its master. The blade flashed under the sun as it flew swiftly to stop the celestial demon.Valienne could feel the danger, but she was close, too close. Just a little touch on Ruby and she would be able to bring this half-blood demon into the demon realm. She could deal with Rion after. She wanted to use Ruby as a guarantee, in case if something went wrong and she couldn't defeat the master, at least Valienne's trip to the Human Realm this time still bear fruit in the form of the southern demon's half-blood princess. Therefore, she ignored the warning sign and her instinct to dodge, thinking that she could stop Rion's attack with the Vox clan's special technique like before, and kept extending her hand toward Ruby. The sword stroke fiercely. Ruby glared at him with those peculiar dark-red eyes. She growled and tried to pull her hands free from Rion's hold, but he held her down firmly."Look at me," Rion repeated.Ruby snarled at him savagely. She bared her teeth and bit his arm. Rion hissed in pain. He held both of Ruby's wrists in one hand and used the other to yank her hair back, so she released her teeth that were latching onto his arm.Ruby hissed and scrunched her eyes shut by the sharp pain on her scalp. It made Rion feel guilty that he loosened his hold a little but didn't let her go completely. Rion pulled her hair slightly so Ruby would have no other choice than to face him. She narrowed her eyes at him, full of anger and very unlike her usual self.
"No."Rion's answer came without a pause. Valienne sighed a little louder, as if she already expected what Rion would say before even asking the question."Rion Ren, one of the seven famous masters from Liebu Mountain. From our fight today, I can see you are not a stupid person. I'm certain at this point you had realized that the half-blood won't be able to live in the human realm any longer, hadn't you?"Rion's jaw clenched. "Ruby's home is in Liebu Mountain in the human realm and nowhere else.""And how would you hide her there, exactly?" Valienne raised a brow at him. "Don't tell me you would just keep her in the mountain and fought off whoever wanted to take her?"
"You can stop talking and let us go if that concerns you so much," Rion answered sharply. He ran out of energy, and he run out of time. All he wanted to do was just to get away from here as soon as possible, as far as possible.Valienne shook her head slightly. "Had you really thought about your apprentice, Rion? Had you really thought about what is best for her? Do you think it would be more merciful for a half-blood in the human realm than in the demon realm?""You want to kill her," Rion spat. "And how would that be more merciful than any other choice she has?"The celestial ice demon scrunched her nose in distaste. "I want to kill her? Why would I want to kill her?""Then what else is your intention of taking he
Ludriev jumped in front of Rion, slashing her sword down harshly right a mere second after the portal Valienne used had closed. Valienne and the other person she held hostage - which Ludriev quite sure was Rion's dearest apprentice from her appearance - were nowhere to be found. The War Goddess looked around her once, making sure there was no other demon that could be a threat to their safety at the moment, and then turned around to face Rion with her brows pinched in bewilderment."Why did you let them go? Why did you let the demon take your apprentice-"At the time, Ludriev's eyes finally flitted away from Rion's bloodless face to his body. Her eyes widened almost comically when she saw Rion's clothes had been completely soaked in blood.
