Elio smiled wryly, his tone bitter. "Of course you wouldn't know, because you've never looked me in the eye. Do you even understand me?"

Evelyn's heart shook. She had thought that he was naturally thick-skinned, since he stayed impassive in the face of everyone’s insults and her mother’s cruelty. It was as if he never took any of it to heart.

"Don’t try to guilt me into feeling bad for you. I never wanted this marriage, so I won’t be kind to you. Nevertheless, it’s good that you found a job. I hope you can persevere with it, so you can support yourself when you eventually leave this household.”
