Chapter 39

The night passed without incident.

Evelyn woke up early because she had something on her mind. She got up and drew the curtains. The morning light shone through the glass window and reflected her tall figure. She stretched, secretly cheering herself on. ‘Come on,’ she told herself, ‘everything will be alright!’

Sneaking past the bed, Evelyn stopped and glanced at the man sleeping on the floor for the first time. She had to admit that he was quite handsome. The problem was he was so unambitious and mediocre! His good looks did not matter after that.

Nevertheless, they were husband and wife. Even if they had never been intimate, he was still her husband in name.

Evelyn hoped that Elio could get a steady job. If he could at least support himself, she would not have to worry that he would starve to death. Then she could let him go properly when the time came!

It had been three years since Elio last woke up naturally. He did not need to wake up early to cook and clean anymore. Evelyn h
