"Damn!"
Zoe cursed as she saw the elevator queue. It was so long, so she reluctantly changed direction and headed for the stairs. Her destination was the sixth floor; her leg would go limp if she ran. But waiting for the elevator would make her late.
Zoe had no other choice; her morning had been filled with her boyfriend's curses, demanding her to fetch an item he considered a lucky charm. She won't make any more mistakes.
Zoe ran up the stairs with her hand on her stomach. She wanted to be cautious, not to disturb her pregnancy. But she didn't want to ruin Max's appearance—her boyfriend. With stumbling steps, Zoe headed towards the dressing room where Max was waiting.
"Here!" Zoe burst in, rushing to open the door, and hastily tossed the pair of socks—a good luck charm owned by Max—into the air.
Max didn't have the confidence to sing without those smelly socks—he believed his performance would fail without them. A foolish belief, but Max cared deeply about it. Max knew Zoe would support whatever he needed right now.
"Oh my God, Zoe! Don't startle me like that. You'll frighten Iris." Max, already dressed in costume, scolded while snatching the socks from Zoe's hand.
"Who..."
Wiping away sweat, Zoe looked at the stunningly beautiful woman with long straight hair sitting at Max's dressing table.
"Iris White!" Zoe exclaimed. She was the singer who was currently on the rise, her popularity even surpassing Max's.
Iris nodded slightly in response to Zoe before returning her attention to the paper.
"The Program Director of the show came by and suggested I duet with Iris as a final tribute to one of the legendary singers who passed away yesterday. We'll be performing his song," Max explained Iris's presence to Zoe, who looked puzzled.
"That's incredible!" Zoe exclaimed in joy. The opportunity to duet with Iris on a national television show with a viewership of over twenty percent—and broadcasted almost across the entire state of America—was a remarkable achievement. Many of Iris's fans would surely take notice of Max after this.
Zoe raised both hands, wanting to hug Max in celebration, but Max declined and furrowed his brow. It was both a reprimand and a gesture to keep Zoe composed, not to embarrass him. Though wordless, Zoe understood the message in Max's eyes, having seen it often enough.
"Who is she?" Iris asked, pointing at Zoe.
"This is Zoe. My manager. Zoe Anderson."
Max introduced before Zoe could speak. In such situations, Zoe was forced to smile. She understood Max needed to protect his name. Most of his fans were women. His producer had sternly warned them to keep their relationship discreet.
"Zoe Anderson." Zoe extended her hand towards Iris.
Iris merely nodded and then turned back to Max, sitting beside her, as if Zoe's hand was invisible.
Zoe quickly withdrew her hand, keeping herself busy. She blamed herself for assuming Iris would want to shake her hand. A famous singer like Iris wouldn't consider Zoe on the same level.
Zoe grabbed a water bottle after feeling her throat parched from running. Occasionally, her eyes glanced over at Max and Iris, engrossed in discussing the parts of the song they would perform.
Zoe felt jealous. Not jealous of Iris being close to Max but envious of their opportunity.
Zoe started from the same starting line as Max. They both dreamed of shining together, but now Max had surged far ahead while Zoe remained at the starting line or regressed. Zoe couldn't remember the last time she had practised her singing. Being Max's manager was time-consuming.
But that was all she could do for now. Max's producer had promised her a chance to sing again, maybe after her child was born.
"You need to get ready!" One of the production crew entered to inform them.
Swiftly, Zoe took Max's guitar, which Zoe had polished to a shine, and placed it near the door.
"Get yourself together. You embarrassed me, Zoe," Max whispered with a scowl before leaving, slamming the door in front of Zoe's face. She should have followed Max to assist with whatever he needed, but Zoe didn't open that door.
"I messed up because of you," Zoe muttered. She wouldn't dare to protest loudly.
Lately, Max's emotions have been easily triggered. He'd get angry over the tiniest things—like an overcooked egg or a slightly open window. He even threw away a cup of coffee she had made because it wasn't sweet enough. Zoe didn't want to cause any more trouble, considering all that.
She hadn't even talked to Max about her pregnancy yet. She hadn't found the right time amidst Max's busy schedule. However, Zoe understood that the burden of fame wasn't easy either. She would try to understand more today.
Zoe slumped onto the couch, closing her eyes to alleviate her fatigue. She gently caressed her slightly sore stomach from the run.

"Where's Max?"
Zoe woke up startled as someone shook her shoulder.
"Sing... singing," Zoe answered, her eyes darting to the clock in shock. She had fallen asleep for over two hours. Zoe had missed the entire shooting session.
The man who woke her—Max's producer—was now glaring. He was standing with two impatient-looking individuals. One of them was carrying a camera, a journalist.
"You're useless! How does a manager lose their artist?!" He shouts.
"I'm sorry, maybe Max is with Iris. They were doing a duet," Zoe pointed out towards the door. Iris's dressing room was two doors down from Max's. Zoe had seen it while running earlier.
"Oh, I saw her earlier. They were amazing together. Their voices blended perfectly. Are they going to work together after this?" The journalist seemed intrigued.
"Later... please don't write about it yet."
Not wanting to hear anything more, Zoe hurriedly walked out, looking for Max, while tidying her hair. The others followed suit.
"Max? Are you in there?" The producer shouted from outside Iris's dressing room. Without waiting for a reply, he immediately opened the door.
"Max..."
Zoe saw Max's naked butt as he frantically searched for his scattered clothes while Iris reached for her dress on the floor.
Even the dumbest people can guess what happened in the room before Billy—Max’s producer, opened it. It's apparent as a sunny day.The sight of that butt is not new for Zoe. She saw it just this morning when Max got out of bed. They slept together last night. Max seduced her last night, almost causing Zoe to miss her 3 a.m. alarm. Zoe had to wake up early to prepare Max's things. She did it willingly and without complaint. Zoe never wanted to complain, even though the burden was getting heavier over time. She was willing to do it for Max—the man now trying to wear his clothes after sleeping with another woman."What's this?" Billy asked, not angry. He even seemed pleased as he watched the person with the camera take alternating pictures of Iris and Max."Be careful not to write anything bad about me!" The threat came from Iris, who was putting on her clothes."I won't. I don't want to have a feud with Wolf." The journalist knew who was behind Iris."There won't be a problem. You two ma
"You're all so stupid! I've said it over and over again to take care of yourselves! I don't care what you do if you don't cause trouble! Your brains can't even comprehend something as simple as this?!" Billy is furious and exclaimed. "You're the most foolish!" He glared at Max and shouted harshly."Can't you control yourself and stop sleeping with just any woman? You'll ruin your career if you keep getting involved with random women and getting them pregnant!""Who are you calling a random woman?!" Zoe snapped back equally loudly.Zoe might have just destroyed her chances for a career. But Zoe didn't care. Billy had just belittled her."I'm his girlfriend. We've been together for years! I'm not a random woman! Iris is the random one! You saw it for yourself, didn't you?" Zoe shout angrilyIris, the woman Max had met this morning, and by noon they were almost intimate. She's the random woman."But she's Iris White, and you're nobody! She can support Max's career to improve while you'r
Zoe's tears are the first that translate the sorrow."AAGHH!"But she couldn't say anything. Crying in silence was suffocating. Zoe wanted to scream, to release the pain that weighed on her chest, but only gasps and moans escaped her lips.Even swearing seemed beyond Zoe's ability. She wanted to be angry at Billy, she wanted to be angry at Max for not defending her, she wanted to be angry at Iris for starting all her misfortunes, but everything was held back in her throat."Please calm down for a moment. The explanation is quite long."The doctor interrupted with a regretful expression. He didn't want to disturb Zoe's grief, but he had to explain. With still-wet eyes, Zoe looked at him and blinked. She was urging him to continue. Her mind was still in turmoil, but Zoe wanted to hear it all."Your head was hit hard, and you underwent surgery to remove a blood clot. Now you're healthy, but your hair might be shorter because we had to shave it."Reflexively, Zoe tried to raise her hand t
TWO YEARS LATER"Zoe, wake up! There's a VVIP guest. You take it!"Zoe stood up from the sofa that served as her bed, looking at the person who had just woken her up with an annoyed expression, but then Zoe smiled. She recognized the person.Tiana, a woman in her forties, was also the owner of the strip club where she currently worked.Zoe reached for the string that was usually used to hang a name tag, but it wasn't a name tag hanging at the end of it. There was a stack of cards with various writings that could be chosen. But Tiana seemed impatient."Yes... yes. I know you'll thank me. But later. He's not a patient person and wants to have fun tonight."Tiana took the greeting card from Zoe's hand and threw it onto the table. Zoe looked at it disappointedly, as she had just found a quicker way to communicate besides writing."Sorry, but not tonight. I'll see it tomorrow. I need to get you ready. Put this on."Tiana wasn't usually rough, but her guest was a VVIP regular. In a hurry, T
A daring plan formed in Zoe's mind. A genuinely audacious goal. Wolf continued to observe Zoe, especially her face. Zoe tilted her head, allowing him to see her face more clearly. She positioned herself at the right angle so Wolf wouldn't judge her appearance too harshly. "I'll take a look first," Wolf said, placing his drink on the table. Not an ordinary table. The table was Zoe's stage. Round, wide enough for a dancer to move safely and freely, with an iron pole in the centre. "I hope you like it." Tiana excused herself. As the sound of Tiana's footsteps grew fainter as the room door closed, Zoe's heartbeat grew louder. She usually no longer got nervous and worked professionally immediately, but this time was different. She had to succeed in getting Wolf interested in her. She had to make him request full service and leave an impression. "You choose the song." Wolf handed Zoe a tablet containing a list of songs, and Zoe was thankful for it. She could choose a song she was very
Zoe nodded in response to Wolf's question. The writing was not wrong. But the request was considered wrong by Wolf. The man, who had deep green irises, looked at Zoe as if he had just met a crazy woman."Do you want more money? If it's just more money... I'll give it to you. Your body is not bad. But not this." Wolf flicked the paper out of her hand, considering it trash."Mmmm..." Zoe mumbled while waving her hands in panic. Afraid that Wolf would leave. But that mumbling made Wolf, who was just about to put on his shirt, stop and look at her with a questioning face. He could see that Zoe was having trouble speaking."Are you mute?" Wolf used sign language. But Zoe didn't understand the sign language. She wrote the answer again on the paper, then held it out.[I'm not deaf, but I can't speak. Nerve problem in the brain. It's long. I don't want to explain it. But I still want to marry you.]An answer that made Wolf snort. Because it was hilarious."So your brain is impaired. No wonder
Zoe gulped. She wanted to shake her head. This was the bravest and craziest choice she'd ever made. She was plunging into a realm she had no idea what it would be like. But revenge was tempting. Her unrequited heartache-which gnawed at her heart every time she saw Max's face on the billboard, was not to be ignored either. They made her mute and crushed her talents and dreams. Killed her unborn child. All that list is enough to make Zoe. The list of villainy was enough to fuel her desire for revenge.Zoe nodded, then showed the short note she had made. [Yes, I know.]"Well, then let's test it." Wolf smiled."Kneel and kiss my feet. This is the level of servitude I want." Wolf lifted his still-naked legs as well, crossing them. Waiting for Zoe. A request that clearly expressed absolute surrender following Zoe's writing. Zoe hesitated, never expecting the offer to come so quickly in such a challenging form.Kissing his feet was a lowering of self-esteem than selling her body. The act i
"Are you sure you're going to do this? How... One moment."Although she had read Zoe's note, Tiana still seemed to find it hard to accept. She checked it once more while Zoe was organizing her things. There wasn't much, just her make-up kit and some boots she bought herself. Other than that, her costumes mostly belonged to Tiana. Today, Zoe would be moving into Wolf's house."He's not the kind of person you can have as a husband, Zoe. You know that, don't you?" Tiana took Zoe's hand, asking her to consider.Zoe reached for the card hanging around her neck and showed the word 'I know.' Many common words hung there, including 'thank you,' 'no,' and 'okay'. Short words that she didn't need to write anymore."Then why... Don't tell me you still haven't forgotten..."Zoe patted Tiana's hand, then typed a sentence on the cell phone hanging around her neck.[They killed my son, made me unable to speak! I won't forget!]Zoe pointed at her writing several times to show her anger. Tiana sighed.
