Chapter 2 - Leaving

Gunnar stared at the young woman with long, beautiful hair that reflected the sunlight like spun gold.  When he saw the young pup in her arms, he felt like a knife had pierced his heart.  Was she already mated?  However, when the little girl jumped down and ran to a couple a few feet away, he felt relieved.

He turned back to the woman who was staring at him with gorgeous hazel eyes.  Gunnar wanted to run to her, but he didn't think that was a good idea after what just happened, so he took slow, steady steps.  She was doing the same until everything else just faded away, and they were surrounded by each other's scent.

"I… I'm Alpha Gun… Gunnar of The Shadow Howlers,"  Bianca smirked at him.  He stood well over a foot taller than her but stumbled over his words like a lovesick teenager.

"I know who you are.  I'm Bianca; my dad is Alpha Karl of The Last Moon Pack."  She spoke with such confidence Gunnar couldn't help but smile.  She was obviously younger than he was, but he didn't care.  She was packed full of spunk.

"Well, Bianca, it appears you're my mate.  I'm sorry about my less-than-desirable entrance to your pack.  This isn't exactly the first impression I wanted my mate to have of me."  Bianca crossed her arms over her chest and slowly moved her eyes over his muscular body, from his bare feet to his wild blonde hair.

"I don't know.  I think you did a pretty decent job.  You came in here, rescued an entire pack, and then walked out of the forest looking like that.  You don't hear me complaining."  Gunnar couldn't remember the last time someone embarrassed him, but she was doing a damn good job of it.

When someone cleared their throat, they looked around and remembered they were surrounded by the entire pack.  Gunnar saw Bianca's face turn a cute shade of pink.  He reached down and took her hand, leading her to who he assumed was Alpha Karl.  He sighed with relief when she didn't snatch her hand away but held on tightly.

"Alpha Karl, I presume?" Gunnar asked, looking at the man standing on the deck of the pack house.  He didn't look too impressed that his daughter's hand was in Gunnar's, but he wasn't letting go.  She was his mate, and he was never letting her go as long as she accepted him.

"Yes.  Please come into my office so we can talk.  Bianca, you can wait here." Gunnar didn't like the look of defeat on his mate's face when her father dismissed her as if she wasn't important.  Instead of letting go of her hand, he pulled her with him.

"Alpha Karl, your daughter is my mate; that makes her my partner.   She'll be involved in every meeting I attend."  Bianca looked at Gunnar with wide eyes.  His partner?  His mate?  She couldn't believe he had called her those things already, but she was even more surprised that he had meant it.

"A woman's place is not in a meeting with men.  She should be caring for the pups and arranging parties."  Gunnar gripped her hand tightly when Bianca's mother tried to pull her away.

"Women are our equals, and I will treat Bianca as one.  She'll never be treated as though she's less than me.  I can care for our pups just as she can.  She can make tough decisions, the same as me.  My luna will be respected and second in command, even above my beta." Gunnar looked into Bianca's eyes.

His speech was more for her than her father.  He wanted her to know that she would never be looked upon as less than any man in their pack.  Karl threw his hands up but didn't say anything else as they followed him.  When they got to his office, he made it clear he wasn't pleased.  He spoke only to Gunnar, ignoring Bianca completely.

"What happened with your warrior was not okay.  I appreciate that you got here in time to stop him from doing whatever he had planned to do, but my pack came close to being destroyed today,"  Karl said tightly.  Bianca knew her dad wasn't as tough as he was pretending.  He was putting on a show for the larger, younger, and more powerful alpha.

"Please accept my apologies.  He will be severely punished for his actions." Gunnar looked at Bianca and saw her nod at him.  He could tell she didn't blame him for Omar's actions.

"Bianca is your mate, so how soon will you mark her and have pups?" Gunnar was taken aback by Karl's bluntness.  How could he talk about her as though she's nothing but a breeder?

"That is a decision Bianca and I will make together.  She hasn't accepted me yet.  I plan to let her get to know me and the pack before she decides.  I will not treat her as a breeder for my offspring.  I will show her the respect she deserves, and I expect you to do the same.  She will not be treated as an object."  Gunnar was having a hard time holding his anger in.  It was obvious his mate's pack had no respect for females.  He looked at Bianca, worried she'd be upset with how he addressed her father, but she was beaming up at him with gratitude.

"Bianca, would you like to come to The Shadow Howler's Pack with me so you can meet everyone and see how our pack life is?" Gunnar held both of her hands so she was facing him, and he could see if there was any hesitation or fear in her eyes.  All he saw was excitement.

"I would love to.  Bye, Dad," Bianca pulled Gunnar to the door as Karl yelled behind them.

"You will not disrespect me in my office.  I am to be addressed as Alpha Karl." The couple was already down the hallway when the door shut behind them.  Bianca pulled Gunnar to her bedroom so she could pack.  When they got there, she closed the door and didn't hesitate to wrap her arms around him.  Gunnar grinned down at her.

"I've waited a long time to find you, Bianca.  If you accept your place by my side, I promise to treat you like a queen for the rest of my days." Gunnar ran his hand through her silky hair and chuckled when she shivered from his touch.

"I don't want to be treated like a queen.  I want to be treated like your equal.  As you can see, my dad doesn't have that philosophy.  He'd rather make a random man the next alpha than me or my sister.  Thank you for speaking up for me in there."  Bianca put her hand over her mouth as she thought about her sister.

"What's wrong?" Gunnar asked with concern.

"My sister Trisha will be devastated that I'm leaving." Bianca plopped down on her bed, conflicted.

"Do you think your parents would let her come with us?  At least for a little while." Gunnar asked, already liking the idea.  Polly would love to have someone her age in the pack house.  Bianca looked up at him with surprise.

"You would let me bring my sister?  She's only four and can be a handful." She wanted to touch him again just to make sure he was real.  What alpha acts like this?  The ones that she'd met acted like cavemen.

"Of course, I'd let her come.  She's your family, and that means she's mine too." Bianca jumped up and hugged him.  Her cheek rested on his bare chest, causing sparks to fly all over her body.  When she pulled back, she looked up into his eyes.

"I want you to know I'm eighteen and a virgin.  I've been waiting for you." She spoke softly.

"I'm twenty-six, and I'm also a virgin." Bianca couldn't hide her shock.

"What?  How are you still a virgin?  I thought alphas tried to have as many women as possible before mating?" She asked, and he shook his head.

"Maybe in some packs, but not mine.  We believe in waiting for our mate.  I'm really glad I did.  Let's go see if your sister can come with us.  I  have a five-year-old niece who I'm sure will get along really well with her." Bianca grabbed her suitcase, and Gunnar took it from her before taking her hand.

"You have siblings?" She asked as they stepped into the hallway.

"I did.  My sister and her mate were killed by rogues.  Polly lives with me and my parents.  She's been excited for me to find my mate so she can always have an excuse to stay with me.  My mom tells her she needs to be around a woman who can be a good role model." Bianca stopped him when they got to the stairs.

"I'm sorry about your sister and her mate.  I can't wait to meet Polly." When they got to the bottom of the stairs, Trisha was standing there with tears in her eyes.

"Are you leaving me?" she asked, her little lip quivering.  Gunnar squatted in front of her.

"If it's okay with you, I'm going to ask your mommy if you can come with us for a while.  My niece Polly would really like you, and I bet you could have lots of fun." Trisha's little face lit up, and she threw her arms around him.  Bianca was shocked because her sister had never been like that with men.

"Mommy, mommy," Trisha began yelling.

"What are you hollering about?" Gunnar turned and smiled at the woman approaching them.

"Hello, luna.  I don't think we've officially met.  I'm Alpha Gunnar." He held his hand out to her and noticed the redness in her cheeks.

"I'm Anara; no one ever calls me luna." She said the last part almost to herself. Gunnar didn't want to comment on it, but after meeting her mate, he wasn't surprised.

"Mom, I'm going with Gunnar to his pack.  We want to take Trisha with us.  He has a niece her age and thinks they'd get along." Bianca spoke with an authority that Gunnar respected.  She would make a great luna.  He could see Anara hesitating.

"Luna Anara, I promise I will take good care of them.  When you're ready for Trisha to return, we'll bring her immediately." She frowned but nodded.

"Thank you.  It would be good for her to get some space from here for a while." Anara knew her husband had no respect for her or her daughters.  Karl wouldn't even notice Trisha was gone.

After packing a small suitcase for Trisha, Gunnar led them to his jeep parked at the entrance to the pack lands.  He couldn't wait to get them home.  If he had his way, neither of them would ever leave.  Trisha would be much better off in his and Bianca's care than in the toxic environment of The Last Moon Pack.

The drive to the Shadow Howlers Pack was less than an hour. Bianca sat quietly, holding Gunnar's hand. She hoped he would continue being kind once they were on his lands."Are you okay?" He asked, raising her hand to his lips to kiss the back of it."I'm just nervous. You don't have a problem with me being so young, do you? I'm not as mature as you are, and I don't want your pack to treat me like a kid." Bianca looked at him, and he shook his head."They wouldn't dare disrespect you like that. I don't have any issues with your age. There are only eight years between us, not fifty. Are you okay with it?" Gunnar looked over and felt insecure. Was he too old for her? She smiled at him, easing his fear."I don't care how old you are. You're my mate, so that means you're perfect for me. You don't have a girlfriend or some crazy jealous ex that will be after me when we show up, do you?" Bianca asked seriously."No. I've never had a girlfriend, and no crazy she-wolf claiming to b

After a quick shower, Bianca put on a dark green sundress with sandals. She didn't typically wear dresses but wanted to make a good impression at her first pack dinner. When she walked out of the bedroom, she didn't need to count the doors to Polly's room. She just followed the squeals of laughter. Bianca stopped at the door and giggled at what she saw. Gunnar was sitting on the floor next to a tiny table where Trisha and Polly were serving tea. He was sipping his tea with his pinkie finger sticking out. What made it even funnier was they had him wearing a fancy white hat and makeup. His lips and some of his face were bright pink. He had dark red on his cheeks, and his eyes and eyebrows were blue. Bianca pulled out her phone and took a picture just as they noticed her. Trisha jumped up and ran to her. "I love this place. Can I stay here?" She asked eagerly. Bianca picked her up and kissed her makeup-covered face. "I'm going to see what I can do to keep you here, okay?" Trisha nodd

Bianca stood still and pretended she didn't hear what her father had mindlinked to the pack. She knew the warriors from Shadow Howlers were already in place. Her father looked confused as he waited."What's wrong, Karl? You expected something to happen? We came prepared, and they have already taken your warriors down." As she finished speaking, they heard wolves coming from the surrounding forest, some in wolf form and some in human form. From the look on her dad's face, he knew his warriors weren't going to help him."Did you really think you would be able to defeat the Shadow Howlers? This is what we do. Now Karl and Anara, your daughter, and I have some questions for you." Gunnar said, stepping forward. Karl started backing up, but one of the warriors was there and stopped him. Bianca led everyone to her father's office, where Gunnar sat behind the desk with her on his lap. Karl looked ready to blow when he was forced to sit in a chair in front of his own desk."We don't

Bianca and Gunnar took the kidnapped Omega back to her pack. She hugged Bianca and waved shyly at Gunnar before running toward her family's house, which was next to the pack house. It was terribly late when they got home, but everyone was still waiting for them. "How'd it go?" Cyril asked as they approached the porch where he stood with Marisa, Trisha, and Polly."We put everyone that appeared to be involved in the dungeons and left some of the warriors there. Everyone else is in their homes. King Zaiden will be going to see them tomorrow. Omar will get all the evidence together, and we'll return in the morning to prepare for the King's arrival." Gunnar answered, looking at Trisha sadly. He felt sick about what had happened to her family and that Karl and Anara were completely unremorseful for the deaths they were responsible for. "Polly said I can sleep in her room so we can have a sleepover. Is that okay?" Trisha asked Bianca hopefully. "That sounds like fun. Do you

Gunnar didn't want to get out of bed the following morning, but they had a busy day ahead. He and Bianca were so tired they passed out immediately after having sex. He kept thinking about the night before. He looked down at Bianca's angelic face resting on his chest. Lying with her against him was the best feeling in the world. He rubbed his hand up and down her back, causing her to moan. "What time is it?" Bianca asked sleepily."It's almost time to leave. I didn't want to wake you any earlier than I had to. How are you feeling?" he asked, kissing the top of her head."I feel incredible. I wish we had more time, but we need to get to Last Moon. I've never met the King. What's he like?" Bianca asked, hiding her chuckle when she heard a slight growl inside Gunnar. "He's decent and fair. Please stay with me when we're around him. He hasn't found his mate yet, and I don't think he's trying very hard to look for her. He doesn't have the same morals we do, and the rumors a

Bianca looked back at Gunnar and saw a lycan holding him back so he couldn't follow her. She had spoken bravely to the king but couldn't help the ripple of fear that went down her spine as he pulled her toward the dungeons. When they were far enough away from everyone else, he stopped and looked at her."So, do you want to tell me why you spoke to me like that? Was it because you were in front of your mate? I saw the way you stared at me when I first got here. I know you're attracted to me. We're all alone now. You can tell me the truth." Zaiden stepped close to her so his body was flush with hers and looked down into her eyes. Bianca refused to back down."You're an attractive man, I'm not going to lie, but no one compares to Gunnar. I've heard about you and your lack of morals when it comes to women. Do you really think that's what a woman wants? To be used as a man's plaything and sent away. It's disgusting." She looked up at him, speaking with a calm voice. The smirk on his face

The following day, Bianca and Gunnar sat down to talk with Austin, Jessica, Marisa, and Cyril to make preparations for the mating ceremony. They would mark each other in front of the pack and then introduce Bianca as the official luna. "Is there anything special you want?" Marisa asked Bianca excitedly. "I'd be happy just to mark each other and be done with it. I don't need a fancy party or anything else." She looked over at Gunnar and took his hand. Having him by her side was all that was important. "Well, that's not going to happen. This is a big deal. Let Jessica and I take care of it. After the day you had yesterday, you need a break. Why don't you take the girls down to the river and have a picnic? We'll have the ceremony the day after tomorrow. All you two have to do is show up." Marisa practically pushed them out of the room. Bianca and Gunnar looked at each other and laughed. "I think we should take your mom's advice. Let's take the girls to the river." Bianca sai

Bianca shivered when they pulled up to the ashes that used to be the Last Moon pack house. It felt creepy to her now. It was still daylight, but there seemed to be a shadow over the former pack lands."Alright, everyone spread out. Don't leave any stone unturned." Gunnar said. Everyone went off in pairs to begin their search. Gunnar and Bianca headed toward the dungeons. When they got there, it was nothing but ash and metal. "Let's go beyond the dungeons. If they had a hidden place, it wouldn't be easily found." Gunnar took her hand, leading her past the ruble. "I've never been back here. My dad was strict on what parts of the pack lands women and children were allowed to go on. The dungeons and anywhere around them were off-limits. I just assumed it was because it was too dangerous. I never thought they were trying to hide anything." Bianca looked around, trying to find something that would show them the secret place that Trisha had talked about."I don't think we'll

He had Gunnar's black hair and Bianca's hazel eyes. His sisters already spoiled him rotten. "Are you girls ready to go?" Bianca asked them. They were going to the palace. It was the first time that everyone who had been involved in the fight would all be together again with their little ones. "Yes. We can't wait to see all the babies," Polly said excitedly. Bianca picked up Ashton, changed his diaper, and put him in his car seat. "Knock, knock," Alani said as she walked into the room, followed by Omar carrying their son Phoenix. "Hi, little guy," Trisha said when Omar squatted down so she and Polly could kiss his cheeks. They had become the big sisters to everyone's little ones. Even though the entire group hadn't been all together, they had all met each other's children. A few minutes later, they were head

Nyx, Sabnac, and Eris got to them before anyone else. Sabnac pulled out a small bag of poison that he had made especially for Achyls and sprinkled it on her head. Eris removed her melted hands from the pups while Nyx grabbed Achyls and flew into the air with her. The poison Sabnac put on her paralyzed her. "Selena and Zaiden, throw one of your fireballs when I release her," Nyx said. "You can't kill me. I'm indestructible." Achyls yells. Her body was paralyzed, but her voice wasn't. Gunnar, Bianca, the guards, and the warriors all shifted into their wolves and ran into the crowd of witches. Helios, Hermes, Nyx, Eris, and Sabnac ran with the wolves and used their magic on the witches. Some of the witches froze when they realized they were fighting gods and goddesses. They knew their magic wouldn't be able to defeat them. Selena and Zaiden stayed next to each other. From what Leto had said their powers would be stronger if they were together. They used their power to take out one witch at a time by throwing small balls of fire at them that turned them into ash instantly. Achyls stayed back to watch, but she was getting angrier and angrier as the witches were defeated. Polly and Trisha watched everything while holding hands. They wanted to help, but they would never disobey their parents. They watched their mom and dad's wolves attack one witch after another. Omar and Alani's wolves were ripping off the witch's heads as were the guards and other warriors.

They have many people who are planning to help them, some with powers that can rival ours. Don't be scared. We have the power of dark magic on our side. “What do you mean, they have the mark of the goddesses?” Gunnar asked as he and Bianca squatted down next to Sabnac and looked into Trisha's and Polly's eyes. “Stare into their pupils. Do you see the gold flickering?” He asked. Bianca gasped as she stared into Trisha’s eyes. She’d never noticed that before. Gunnar was stunned when he saw the same thing in Polly’s eyes. “What does this mean?” Bianca asked. Polly and Trisha looked at Sabnac in confusion. “We aren’t pups?” Polly asked him. He chuckled a deep chuckle and everyone around him looked in disbelief at the demon. No one had thought they'd see a demon like him laugh. “You’re still pups, but you’re very special pups. A goddess sent you here. I don’t know who or why, but someone sent you to Earth. That’s why you both are so mature for your age and have good instincts.” He explained. “How do you know so much about this?” Alani asked.

He should be here soon.” Nyx, Helios, Andrew, and Hermes all gasped in surprise. “Who is Sabnac?” Selena asked. They were in the office trying to come up with a plan of attack. “He’s one of the scariest demons in the underworld. He and Psyche trust each other, though. He's the one who killed her sisters.” No sooner did Jameson finish speaking than there was a loud knock on the front door. “That’s probably him now,” Andrew said as they all stood up, left the office, and went to the front door. The guards didn’t say anything as they mindlinked Gunnar. When they opened the gates, he bowed to them slightly. “Thank you, good men,” Jameson teleported to the palace doors. He could have done that to begin with, but he didn’t want to cause any unnecessary alarm. Just as he was about to knock on the door, it opened and Andrew walked out. “I’m glad you could make it.
