Alicia's POV

Two Days Later

“Get dressed quickly; we wouldn’t want to be late for the charity gala! And don’t forget the necklace!” Andrew’s deep, cold voice commanded abruptly the moment he was done preparing.

In his black suit, he dashed out of the room without looking at me. I tried my best to be quick, but just as I reached for the necklace, the loud ringing of my phone caught my attention.

Picking it up, I placed it to my ear. “Hello, who is…” I began, but a tense voice echoed from the other side of the line.

“Luna Alicia, you have to hurry! Your mother has just been hospitalized. You need to get here right away!”

“What?” I gasped, my eyes widening in shock. “My mother?” I repeated, desperate to make sense of the news.

“Hurry!” The call ended abruptly, leaving me with a rush of panic and uncertainty.

It was the day of the charity gala, an event I was supposed to attend with Andrew. But now, my mother was in the hospital, and I was torn. What was I supposed to do?

Before I could gather my thoughts, Andrew stormed into the room, his eyes blazing with irritation. “What’s taking you so long?” he snapped, his impatience clear.

“Andrew, please, you have to understand. My mother has just been hospitalized, and I need to go to her,” I pleaded softly, my voice quivering with anxiety and worry.

Andrew’s face hardened as he listened, his eyes narrowing with disdain. “Of all the days for her to get hospitalized, it had to be today?” he said, his voice dripping with cold contempt.

“You can’t say these cruel words to an old lady, especially when she is your mother-in-law,” I denied Andrew. Whatever harsh words he said to me were okay, but not toward my mother.

His face twisted for a moment; apparently, a word in my speech had offended him.

"Choose between me and your mom," he asked—a ridiculous question.

"You are losing your mind," I turned unhesitatingly.

The lack of empathy and respect he showed for my family’s crisis made me feel utterly sad and... enraged.

I would have argued about his nonchalance toward my mother’s illness, but I didn’t have much time. I swiftly dashed out of the house, found a taxi, and left for the hospital.

I tried my best to arrive on time. I couldn’t lose my mother now. The moment I arrived at the hospital, I saw the doctor rushing toward the emergency room.

“Doctor Albert!” I called out in a panicked tone as I ran toward him.

“Luna Alicia!” He bowed at my sight.

“Please, I’m here because of my mother. Is she going to be okay?” I asked with a racing heart.

“I can’t answer that yet, Luna. I promise to give you a response once we are done!” Without waiting for me to say more, he ran into the emergency room, shutting the door behind him.

I couldn’t shake the thought of losing my mother. It scared me to the core. I kept pacing around the hallway in fear.

My heart raced with a relentless pounding, each beat echoing my anxiety. I was consumed with worry for my mother when I suddenly stopped in my tracks, transfixed by the sight on the TV screen before me.

“Isn’t that Andrew?” I murmured, squinting in disbelief as I tried to make sense of the image.

The live broadcast was from the charity gala—the very event I was supposed to attend with Andrew. There he was, but not with me.

He was with someone else, and not just anyone, but Veronica, his stepsister who disliked me so much.

My breath caught in my throat as I noticed something even more crushing: the necklace Andrew had given me was now draped around Veronica’s neck.

They were posing together like the perfect couple, her arm lovingly entwined with his, both of them smiling radiantly at the cameras.

The realization hit me like a wave. Veronica was taking my place at the gala, and the image shattered me completely. Tears welled up in my eyes at this moment.

He easily let another woman take my place, ignoring all the work I had put into my position and career.

“What is he doing with her?” The question escaped my lips in a whisper of anguish.

Alicia's POVSeeing that I had been given the week off from work, I decided to get up and do the house chores myself. Plus, I had informed my nanny not to show up.With a smile on my face, I began to wash the dishes, cook, and clean. From what I could tell, Elisa was playing, and that’s why she clearly hadn’t bothered me for now.I tried my best to keep everywhere clean before I could go do the laundry. Just as I was still caught up with so many house chores, the loud knock against the door caught my attention. It made me curious, considering the fact that I had informed the nanny not to show up today. Besides, I barely knew anyone around the area. So who was it at the door? I pondered deeply. The knock came again, swift and abrupt this time around. Without hesitation, I took off my apron and tossed it onto the chair that was beside me. I headed for the living room.I had to check if I was okay too before opening the door.I began to speak, thinking it was my nanny, “I told you not to

Brian's POV. The bottle was already half-empty.I sat on the edge of my bed, my fingers curled tightly around the glass as I stared into the golden liquid, hoping it would blur the sharp images in my mind. But no matter how long I stared, no matter how fast the alcohol hit my system, Alicia’s terrified face wouldn’t fade.My stomach turned as I remembered her trembling hands, the way her eyes welled up with fear when she told me what happened. I should’ve been there. I should’ve protected her. The fact that it happened in my hotel made the guilt heavier. My chest felt like something was pressing against it, a weight I couldn’t shake.I tipped the glass and swallowed it all at once. It burned going down, but it didn’t stop the ache. The door creaked open behind me."Alpha Brian?" Nathan’s voice broke through the silence.I didn’t turn. "What is it, Nathan?"He stepped inside, closing the door gently behind him. I heard the soft thud of his boots on the carpet."Just wanted to give y

Alicia's POV. Mr. Brian's voice still echoed in my ears, low and firm. "I'll take you home, Alicia. No arguments."My heart fluttered at the idea. Not from excitement, but dread. I looked up at him, my boss, the president of the company, standing tall in his usual dark suit. His expression was unreadable, as always. Calm. Composed. In control. He looked at me as if he already knew what I would say, as if my resistance was pointless."Sir, I appreciate it, but... I don’t think it’s a good idea. People might start talking." My voice was barely above a whisper. I looked down at my feet, trying to avoid the intensity of his eyes.He didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. "And you think I care about what they say?"I swallowed hard, still not meeting his gaze. "It could cause problems. Rumors."There was a long pause before he spoke again. His tone is sharper now, more commanding. "Refusing me would be disobedience, Alicia. You’re already on your second strike. Do you really want a third?"My chest

Brian's POV. After wrapping things up with Mr. Thompson, I finally let out a deep breath. The man was a pain; arrogant, loud, and always trying to talk over everyone. But I’d handled him, like always. I turned around, expecting silence, but instead, I saw Alicia rising to her feet. Her movements were slow, almost cautious. Then I noticed something off—her steps wobbled, and her knees buckled slightly. Before I could think twice, I moved.I reached her just in time, scooping her up into my arms like it was second nature. Her body stiffened, and she started to struggle, pushing weakly against my chest. But I held her tighter.“Don’t move,” I said firmly, my voice low but clear. “Just stay calm.”Her hands froze on my chest. She looked up at me with wide, questioning eyes, and something in me reacted; something hot, deep in my core. I wasn’t expecting that. Her eyes locked onto mine, searching, confused, maybe even a little angry, but she didn’t say a word. She didn’t have to. That ga

Brian's POVClimbing into the car, I didn't hesitate to ignite the engine. As it roared to life, I noticed my phone buzzing. When I looked at it, I realized it was the address that James had sent to Alicia to go pick up Mr. Thompson. With my jaw clenching tightly, I stepped hard on the accelerator, propelling the car forward in the direction. As I drove, I couldn't help but reflect on the mistakes I had made in just a single day.At first, Alicia was in her office. She was looking weak and unhealthy, but I didn't give much attention to it. Instead, I scolded her and pushed her into making decisions she shouldn't.Now, she was with a man who would do just anything in his power to have a lady beneath him. With my fingers tightening on the steering wheel, I pressed hard on the accelerator. I needed to arrive at the hotel faster to avoid anything from happening.“Just hang in there a little longer, Alicia, I'm coming to get you soon,” I mumbled, my frustration deepening at every turn I to

  • The Secretary's Unexpected Mate    Chapter 019

Brian's POVAs I sat quietly in my office, I kept on recalling how Alicia looked when I found her sleeping in her office this morning. Her eyes were sulken, not to talk about how unkempt her hair was. Could it be that she didn't go back home last night? Did I push her into overworking herself?I shook my head, trying to get the thoughts out of my mind. I shouldn't care. She brought this upon herself. She had the chance to leave, but she chose to stay back.I turned to the documents on my desk. I tried focusing, but it was difficult to do so. Closing the files in frustration, I stood to my feet. I began pacing the office until a knock came at my door. I thought it was Alicia, so I acted all stern and tough.“Come in,” I demanded, expecting her calm demeanor before me. I was instantly disappointed when the door opened to my Beta, Nathan, who bowed his head to me.“What do you want?” I asked in a grumpy tone, seeing that he wasn't the one I was expecting in my office. He paused for a sec
