At midnight, Dennis stumbled back to his luxurious home, but it was cold and empty. He couldn't remember why the house, once filled with so much love, had become a dark and lonely prison where they silently tormented each other.

Dennis didn't want to talk about it, didn't want to think about it anymore. It had taken its toll on his heart, leaving him with nothing but a shell of his former self.

She was the love of his life. How could he forget her?

Mary was curled up on the sofa, her eyes closed as if she were sleeping, but only she knew she was trying to escape the reality that had become too much for her to bear. Affer five years of marriage, and they still couldn't have a child. Dennis loved her so much that he couldn't accept the idea of divorce, but Mary was just too tired.

Who wouldn't be tired? Marriage had been tearing them apart, and it was better to part ways.

Dennis glanced at Mary, curled up on the couch. He loved her more than anything, more than his own life. His rational mind told him not to wake her up, and he didn't plan on carrying her to their bedroom either, as her sleep was restless.

Dennis tiptoed towards the bedroom, trying not to make any noise.

"Let's get a divorce." Mary said, still curled up on the couch, her eyes closed, her lips slightly parted.

Dennis stood up straight, exhaling a deep breath. "Are you still awake?" He asked.

He tried to avoid her words, but Mary continued, "Dennis, let's get a divorce."

This time, she called out his name, and all the pain and sorrow were hidden in those beautiful round eyes. Dennis turned to look at her. Mary used to be the most sought-after female student by many male students. Dennis, who was seven years older than her, had a significant background. He founded his own company and pursued her for a long time before Mary agreed to be his girlfriend.

He still remembers the day Mary graduated from college. He held a large bouquet of flowers, dressed in formal attire, stood in front of her parents, teachers, and all the students. Dennis knelt down with one knee and held up the diamond ring in his hand.

With a sincere and solemn expression, he said, "Mary, will you marry me?"

Under the blessing of everyone, Mr. Peter held Mary's hand and walked on the red rose carpet to hand over his beloved daughter to Dennis and wish them happiness.

The scene was filled with so much joy, and Dennis closed his eyes, then whispered, "I can't agree."

Mary covered her face with her hands and said, "It's been five years. How long do you want to live like this? The doctor said I'm infertile. Do you understand? I'm infertile."

With her last sentence, Mary screamed out loud, and her hands clenched her hair.

Dennis quickly approached and held her hand, saying, "But we have a choice. We don't need a child. I need you. We can still be happy."

"I am the only son in the John family lineage. I don't have a child, so what should I do? My parents are not pleased, how can I just ignore them? I can't."

John Dennis is the only son of the wealthy John family, owning the Cnet hotel chain and the Cnet Group economic conglomerate.

After getting married, Mary discovered Dennis' family background, and he explained to her many times that he didn't need the wealthy family lineage, and he only needed her to be happy and live a prosperous life. However, the John family is powerful and he is the only son in the family line, so how can they allow the couple to be stable?

The truth is that Mary cannot have children, and the painful truth is that Dennis cannot protect her if everything continues to drag on like this.

Without Dennis' protection, Mary might not even be able to live to this day. She knows what Dennis is willing to sacrifice to ensure her safety, even if it means his own life.

Mary looks up with sad, teary eyes and asks, "Can you forgive me and yourself?"

Dennis kneels down on the cold floor and embraces Mary, "I don't agree. You can do anything you want, but don't mention the word divorce. We cannot be separated."

Mary bites her lip and holds back her tears, "If I die, will you be able to let go?"

Startled, Dennis released Mary and covered his face with his hands, "You..."

"Tell me the truth." Mary said, her eyes closed in pain.

Dennis shook his head in panic, "It's not possible."

"It is possible." Mary nodded.

Dennis looked deeply into her eyes, seeing a determination that he had never seen before in their five-year marriage. He recoiled in fear, "Don't do this."

Mary reached out to embrace him, but then withdrew her hand, "If you force me, I have to do this."

Dennis looked up at the ceiling, tears streaming down his face and disappearing into his hair. He took a deep breath and made a decision, "Give me a year. Give me one year, for our marriage. Can you do that?"

He looked deeply into her eyes, waiting. Mary wanted to stand up, but then she heard him say, "I beg you."

There was only one word, "Okay," and then the room fell silent.

In the morning, Mary woke up and didn't see Make in the room. She only saw a piece of paper on her dressing table.

"I'm going to work. I'll be back early in the evening. Please wait for me!"

Mary stared at the paper for a long time, the handwriting as firm and resolute as Dennis himself. One year, this marriage could not be saved, not even in ten years!

Carefully, Mary put the paper into a journal, and every time she felt sad, she wrote a few words to ease her mind.

Today, Dennis will come home early, and Mary wants to cook a delicious meal for him, waiting for him to arrive. Thinking about what to make, Mary puts on some lipstick. She is already very beautiful, with snow-white skin, and a touch of pink lipstick that will make her face glow.

On Mary's hand are some fresh ingredients, a bag of fish, and a bag of vegetables. She just placed the bags on the back seat of her car when she heard a voice say, "Hello, Mary."

She turned around to see two tall men standing near her. Mary had a feeling that something was not right and immediately went into a defensive posture, asking, "Who are you?"

"Me?" one of the men smirked. "Come with us for a ride!"

Mary bit her lip and looked down at her feet. Today, she wore her sneakers and glanced at the nearby alley. She recognized the face of one of the men.

The other man impatiently said, "Get in our car."

Mary pretended to comply, nodding her head once. The two tall men let their guard down, and the weak and delicate woman could only obey. Seconds later, Mary lifted her foot and ran towards the small alley, shouting behind her, "Run, chase me!"

The narrow alley had many turns. Mary kept her head down and ran, afraid of being caught. She did not know who had sent the two men after her. It could be Dennis's mother or someone else. For now, she needed to escape.

Mary ran without looking back until she could not hear their voices or footsteps anymore. She stopped and gasped for air before looking around. The area was rundown and desolate, with dilapidated houses. Mary frowned, wary of her surroundings.

She saw an old woman with white hair sitting on a bench in the small alley, with a walking stick leaning against the wall. Mary gritted her teeth, wanting to pass by quickly, but the old woman called out to her in a hoarse voice, "Young lady, would you like to see your fortune?"

At that moment, Mary didn't see anyone around, but suddenly an old lady appeared. After thinking for a moment, Mary politely answered, "No, ma'am."

As she took two steps forward, the old lady said, "You will regret it."

Mary stopped and the old lady continued, "Why do children these days suffer so much?"

Finally, Mary turned to look at the old lady. Her hair was white and tied up in a circle on her head. She was dressed in old, worn-out clothes and wore a pair of fabric shoes. This style of dress was quite different from others, so Mary asked, "Are you talking about me?"

"There's only me and you here," the old lady replied.

Mary looked at the old lady suspiciously.

The old lady then asked, "Do you want me to read your palm?"

Although the old lady was old, her eyes sparkled brightly, as if she knew everything. Mary was hesitant and asked, "Really?"

The old lady laughed and said, "Give me your hand."

By some unfortunate coincidence, Mary approached and extended her hand. After examining it for a while, the old lady accurately predicted what Mary was going through. She kept saying, "There is a way, there is a way."

Mary withdrew her hand and looked at the old lady with a questioning gaze, "What are you saying? What way?"

The old lady looked at Mary and said, "You want a child, there is only one. Will you accept it or not? Do you want it or not?"

Hearing this, Mary was overjoyed, "I want a child! Can you help me, please?"

Without saying much, the old lady took out a package of medicine from her cloth bag and said, "Drink it on the full moon night this month. When you and your husband are intimate with each other, you will have a child."

Mary looked at the small packet of medicine in the old woman's hand and hesitated whether she should take it or not. But how did the old woman know that she wanted a child? How did she know so much about Mary's current situation? She couldn't believe that this medicine could really be more effective than top-notch hospitals with modern medicine.

Seeing Mary hesitating, the old woman wanted to retract her hand, but Mary quickly reached out to take it and said, "Thank you."

Mary planned to take out money from her purse and give it to the old woman, but she remembered that her purse was still in the car. She was embarrassed and said, "I'm sorry, I don't have any money with me. Can I find you here later?"

The old woman stood up with her cane and said, "I don't need money."

After saying that, she walked away into a small alley.
