Five Years Ago . . .
PROLOGUE ✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿Last week, my friends Abigail, Sheena, and I discussed Jenna's upcoming birthday. She had mentioned that she wouldn't be having a party since her parents were still in Thailand, where their business is based. Jenna planned to celebrate later when they returned home. Despite this, she casually mentioned treating us to lunch at school the following day since her actual birthday fell on a Sunday (today). But because Jenna meant so much to me, I wanted to surprise her with a gift, so I decided to visit her house early. I went alone because Sheena and Abigail hadn't responded to my messages or calls.
When I arrived at her house, I was taken aback by the number of cars parked out front. A large tent was set up in the spacious front yard, with catering and numerous people seated at tables. Puzzled, I stepped out of the taxi with a shopping bag containing swimsuits I had bought as a present. Jenna loved swimming and had mentioned her desire for swimsuits earlier. In my other hand, I held a box of cake.
The gate was open, so I was able to get in right away. No one noticed my presence until I reached their spacious terrace. That’s when her older sister, who was coming out of the main door, noticed me, her eyes widening as if she had seen a ghost.
"J-Jazzlene?" I smiled in confusion. "Hi, Laira. Where’s Jenna?" She hadn’t answered my question when I heard familiar laughter from inside. Laughter from a girl and a boy, followed by more laughter that I assumed belonged to Jenna’s parents. And then, the next laughter I heard was the familiar voices of Sheena and Abigail. I had no choice but to step closer to the main door because it was open. But I stopped short when I saw who was inside—in the living room—facing each other and laughing while food was laid out before them. I was right. The first girl and boy I heard laughing were now sitting close together. Jenna—my best friend, and Vince—my boyfriend. With them were Jenna’s parents and my other two friends—Sheena and Abigail. I could see them clearly. Even with my vision blurred by tears, what I saw was clear. I saw Vince put his arm around Jenna, and I saw how they looked at each other when their eyes met. I dropped the cake and the shopping bag I was holding, which drew everyone’s attention. Vince quickly stood up from his seat, and both he and Jenna, Sheena, and Abigail looked at me with wide eyes. "Jazzlene . . ." they all called out to me softly, but I couldn’t speak. I felt so heavy. They betrayed me. My boyfriend cheated on me with my best friend, and I was also betrayed by my so-called best friends. Sheena and Abigail knew. They knew what was happening, yet they said nothing. They didn’t even inform me that there was something between the two of them. Instead, it seemed like they condoned it. "Jazzlene!" I heard Vince call out loudly as I started running away. The taxi I took earlier was gone, so I ran faster, hoping to find any vehicle that could help me. Even a white van would do. It might be better if I got kidnapped and chopped up so they wouldn’t have to hide their relationship when I’m gone. But no white van came my way. Instead, a Matte Black Aston Martin stopped in front of me. I stopped because I recognized that fancy car. It belonged to my brother’s friend. To Adam. And I wasn’t wrong because he suddenly got out from the driver's seat. He was wearing his college uniform. "Jazzlene?" There was no emotion on his face. I didn’t know if he was wondering why I was running. I don’t know. All I knew was that Vince was close to catching up to me, and all I wanted was to hurt him ten thousand-fold. "Adam . . ." My voice was trembling because, honestly, I was scared of him. Of all my brother’s friends, he was the one I feared the most because of his cold demeanor. You couldn’t read any emotions on his face, so you never knew if he was angry, happy, sad, etc. And that was why he was scary and unapproachable to me. "I'm ready to die in your hands. But first . . ." I took a step forward, "—let me kiss you." I didn’t waste any time. He was much taller than me, so I had to tiptoe and hold onto his shoulders to reach him. "Jazzle—" Vince didn’t finish calling my name. He stopped, but I could feel he was just a few steps away from us. I didn’t let go of Adam until I was sure that cheating scumbag Vince had left. Mint. Adam’s breath smelled like mint. Sweet. It tasted like candy— "He's gone." Adam pushed me away from him, but not roughly. When I looked behind me, Vince was indeed gone. How long had our lips been touching? "Out of curiosity, why are you crying, and why the hell did you kiss me?" I turned back to Adam because of his question. But I couldn’t see him clearly now because tears welled up in my eyes again as I remembered what I had witnessed earlier. Vince and my friends' betrayal. "B-Because . . ." "Because . . .? What?" "B-Because . . ." I started to sob. My shoulders were shaking as I cried when he muttered, "Tell me what or who to kill. Right. Now." His voice was always deep. So deep. Really deep. I quickly wiped my tears away, looked up at him, and shook my head repeatedly. "N-No. Let it be. Just let it be. I just want to go home. Can you give me a ride?" In all the years he had been friends with Kuya Zane, this was the first time I asked him a favor. So, I didn’t know if he would agree. If he would let me ride in his fancy car and drop me off— "I hope you're not waiting for me to open the door for you," he snapped. That’s when I realized he was already inside the car, in the driver's seat. What a gentleman. I walked to the passenger seat next to him and ducked into the car. It smelled expensive. The scent of leather and his spicy cologne mixed together, calming my nerves slightly. But after a few moments, I suddenly remembered kissing him. I closed my eyes tightly, bowed my head, and bit my lower lip. 'Sht. Why did he have to appear in front of me? There are so many people in the world. My brother has many friends, too. Why couldn’t it have been Henry? Or David? Or Gerald? Sht! Why did it have to be Adam?!' I looked up and, gathering my courage, glanced at him while fiddling with my fingers in my lap. "Adam, listen. Look. I'm . . ." I stammered. "Sorry. I didn’t mean to do what I did earlier. It’s just that . . . I have a situation and you—can we? Can we just forget that this happened? Please don’t tell my brother. He’ll kill me." He glanced at me and studied me for a moment, his angular face serious and something else. Something that I couldn’t decipher because now, I was too busy noticing all over how damn handsome he was. "Are you aware that you assaulted me?" He was now looking at the road as we drove towards my house. "Assault?" I blinked. "That wasn’t assault." "You did kiss me." "But not really. Our lips just touched, they didn’t move at all—" "Without first securing my consent." "But I did tell you. I informed you and you didn’t say anything. Silence means yes, right?" "Excuse me?" He raised an eyebrow when he glanced at me again, and for a moment, it was like I wanted to reach out and strangle him until he ran out of—no, never mind. That’s a sin. "I thought you wanted it too because you didn’t say anything." I frowned. "Let’s just forget about it. Don’t tell my brother, since it wasn’t really a kiss. The kiss I know involves both lips moving. Our lips didn’t move. Just think of it as if I accidentally stumbled and our lips touched. I’ll treat you coffee tomorrow so we’re even—" "Explain," he interrupted me with authority in his tone. "I'll let it slide only if you explain to me why you kissed me." I bit into my lower lip. I had screwed myself over because I knew I had no choice but to tell him the truth. I explained to him the betrayal of my friends and my boyfriend. I kissed him to show that I wasn't affected or to make Vince jealous or hurt him if it worked. As I recounted the story, I didn't realize I was becoming emotional again, so I reached for a tissue from his tissue box. "Serves you right." I was about to sniffle when he said that, so I glanced at him, eyebrows furrowed and feeling resentful. "What? What serves me right? Are you siding with them?" He sighed. "You're only fifteen, Jazzlene. I bet Zane doesn't even know you have a boyfriend. Am I right? So it serves you right. It's better for you to get hurt to learn your lesson." "You're so mean!" I sobbed. "I've already been hurt, and you're still like this! Maybe you don't have a girlfriend because of your attitude, huh? Maybe you're just bitter because even I seem to have more luck than you! Because you, it looks like you've never even had a girlfriend!" He didn't respond. He just looked serious, staring ahead. "Remember this, Adam. You won't ever get a girlfriend. No one will love you. Mark my words—" I was about to sob when he suddenly hit the brakes. Thankfully, I was wearing a seatbelt, or I might have borrowed a face from the dog. "Get out." He pointed to the door on my side. "Now." "I'll get out even if you don't tell me to! This is our last conversation! Don't come to our house, even if my brother asks you to!"Six years later . . . Present time. JAZZLENE'S POV I sat silently at the bus stop shelter, clutching my phone, debating whether I should call my brother, Zane, to come get me. Tears streamed down my face, and my body shivered from the cold because I was drenched. Not from rain—there wasn't any. It’s just that I was wearing a two-piece swimsuit, soaked, with only a T-shirt over it because my friends and I had a get-together. Camille, Violet, Leigh, and I had this tradition of bonding after exams to unwind from the stress. We checked into a lesser-known hotel and resort, preferring places less frequented by people because Camille, being a famous actress, couldn't be exposed to the public. [FLASHBACK] The four of us were dressed and already in the swimming pool when I noticed someone nearby. The pool was surrounded by tall plants, about waist-high, but through a gap, I saw Dominic. my boyfriend, and here's the worst part: he was flirting with someone I never imagined he’d go for. G
✧ADAM MEADOWS✧ADAM Meadows. My intuition was right. He was the one picking me up. Now I wasn’t sure if I should go with him or muster the courage to return to the hotel. Because he wasn't an 'I'll-do-my-buddy-a-favor-and-pick-his-sister-up type of guy. He was a look-at-me-wrong-or-say-anything-to-me-I-don't-like-and-I'll-kill-you-with-my-hands kinda guy, and he's doing it looking so calm and gorgeous you wouldn't notice your world crashing down.I looked down briefly at my dirty feet since I was barefoot when I came here. I swiped my tongue over my dry lips as the passenger seat window rolled down."Get in." His voice wasn't loud, nor was it angry. It was just loud enough for me to hear. "Or do you want me to open the door for you?" His tone was so cold that I felt my body freeze.Reluctantly, I stood up and walked toward him. I didn’t care if I dirtied his car. He was rich enough to have it cleaned anyway.Once inside, I glanced at him briefly before looking away because I couldn't h
✧ADAM MEADOWS✧"So? Is she your type?" Henry asked as I stared at his mobile screen. It was a picture of a woman. The third one, actually. I didn't like the first two. I didn't even look at them for more than two seconds. But this third picture held my gaze for a bit longer, not because I liked her, but because I recognized her. She was the sister of Jazzlene's former friend. Jenna's sister. The ones who had betrayed Jazzlene when she was just fifteen. The reason they were showing me pictures of women was that they wanted me to have a girlfriend. I don't do girlfriends. But that doesn't mean my sex life is dry. I still hook up when I need to release some steam. But I'm selective, and if a woman doesn't pass my taste, I won't touch her.Like these pictures Henry was showing me. None of them passed my standards. Especially this sister of Jazzlene's ex-friend. Despite her revealing dress, she looked like the type who expected sweet nothings and lovemaking in bed.I didn't do sweet nothin
✧ADAM MEADOWS✧WE were all gathered around the dining table. Zane's parents sat next to each other, with me beside Zane, followed by David and then Gerald. Henry had left a while ago, despite his desire to stay, because his wife had called him home."Your sister's internship is coming up, Zane," Attorney Hart mentioned. We hadn't started eating yet because Jazz wasn’t here. We were waiting for her; her mom had insisted she change clothes due to the cat fur all over her. Earlier, she had vented her frustrations while playing with her Persian cat."Internship? Where at?" Zane inquired."La Vienna Hotel."Zane frowned. "La Vienna? That's quite a distance from here."He was right. It’s a three-hour journey from Aloha City, but I understood why Jazz had chosen to do her internship there. Currently, it's one of the most prestigious hotels in the country. For now."Yeah. That’s why your dad and I are concerned about her. You know your sister. She's so trusting, it's easy for her to be taken a
✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿I strolled alongside Camille, Leigh, and Violet towards the main gate after our final class had wrapped up.The days of Camille being swarmed by students seeking photos had settled into a more familiar routine. Now, university life for her was a bit more relaxed, though friendly waves and greetings still followed her as we walked. True to her nature, she responded warmly to everyone, even those she hadn't met before.Among us, Violet stood out as the most outspoken. Her very name hinted at her sharpness. Leigh, in contrast, kept to herself but was known for her numerous flings across different departments. And then there was me—the cursed one. Always left behind, always deceived. I can't fathom why. Finding an answer is a challenge.I sighed, prompting Violet to intervene. "You're scowling again, Jazz. Come on! Quit dwelling on Dominic! You should be celebrating how swiftly karma caught up with him! That jerk!"Her words struck a chord within me. Indeed, she was right.
✧ ADAM MEADOWS ✧I advanced, narrowing my aim at the man clutching Jazzlene's arm. Fear trembled through him, sweat beading on his brow. "I'm counting to three. One . . . two—"He let go of Jazzlene, and I acted swiftly, drawing her behind me, shielding her with my body while keeping him in my sights. This man, unyielding even after losing his job. What more did he want? Did he seek death now? I could accommodate that."A-Adam . . ." I felt Jazzlene grip the edge of my coat. "Please . . . put it down."Ignoring her plea, I responded firmly, "No. Because unless he leaves in three seconds, I'm going to end him and bury him eight feet deep—" Before I could finish, he bolted away, earning a slight smirk from me. Seems he feared death after all. But I wasn't finished with him. He needed a lesson in the days ahead, in case he decided to come after Jazzlene again.I turned to her and motioned towards the car. "Get inside. Quickly."Without waiting for her reply, I made my way to the driver's
✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿I walked into Zane's room and found him already dressed in his pilot uniform, with his suitcase and duffel bag at the foot of the bed. He was engrossed in typing on his phone, so he didn't immediately acknowledge me when I entered.Taking a seat on the edge of his bed, I dropped my body down, hands resting on my knees. "Always take care of yourself out there. Don't do anything reckless, okay?" I said, prompting him to finally turn and look at me.He furrowed his brow. "You're the one who needs to watch out here, especially since you'll be left alone.""I'll be with Mom and Dad," I assured him.He huffed. "They're leaving too. As far as I know, next week. Mom has a case she needs to handle. She has to visit her client and they'll stay at the client's vacation house during the hearing to be nearby and avoid frequent travel.""Huh?" I raised an eyebrow. "Why didn't Mom mention anything to me?" Sitting up in bed, I looked at my brother in surprise. "Does that mean I'll be a
✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿ I lifted the ladle to taste the sinigang I had cooked for dinner. Tonight, it was my turn to cook since Mom and Dad hadn't returned yet. They left around three this afternoon to go grocery shopping, ensuring I'd have enough supplies for the day they'd be away. The taste was just right. I set down the ladle, covered the pot, turned off the stove, and unplugged the rice cooker before grabbing my phone from the table. As I was about to leave the kitchen, my phone rang. It was Mom. "Hi, Mom," I greeted first. There was a brief silence on the line, filled with the distant sounds of laughter. "Hi, sweetie. Have you cooked dinner?" "Yeah. I'm done," I replied, already on the stairs heading up to my room. "Sweetie, Daddy and I won't be home right away. We got caught up with some old classmates and made dinner plans. Go ahead and din in without us. Oh, and don't forget to bring some food to Adam's apartment." I rolled my eyes at the mention of Adam and paused midway up th
Special Chapter Six – Last PartA month later . . .✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿It has been a week since Adam and I got married. Our wedding wasn’t grand; it was a private ceremony, just as we both wanted for the tranquility of our lives. Only family and close friends were witnesses to our union, including his Uncle Win. Although Adam was initially hesitant to invite him, I insisted because, no matter what, he is still Adam’s biological father. After the wedding, Uncle Win returned to Canada. As for my friends, only Leigh couldn’t attend because her vacation leave wasn’t approved. But I understand, as she is new in her job in Australia. She promised to make it up to me once she returns. So far, everything has been going well. Even though the news of our marriage has made it to the media and the internet, the public still doesn’t know that I am Adam’s wife. He personally ensured that no media outlet could publish our pictures, especially mine. Additionally, all hotel employees who knew about us had
Special Chapter Five✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿"ARE you sure? Why? Is there a problem with the hotel?" Brianna asked with a note of concern when I mentioned my plan to resign. It was just a plan, not a certainty yet.I gave a faint smile. “No, no problem. Just, uh, personal issues,” I replied, hoping she wouldn’t press further. It seemed she noticed my reluctance to elaborate and didn’t pry any deeper. At lunch break, I received a message from Adam asking me to come to his office to join him for a meal since he was at the hotel. As usual, I made my way there discreetly. I pretended I had a task from Sir Mikko, since people here still didn’t know about our relationship. When I arrived at his office, I found him already settled on the sofa in the center of the room. He had also set up the food on the glass table where we always ate when I was here.“How’s my princess doing today?” he greeted me with a broad smile as he turned in my direction. Before I could get closer, he stood up from his seat an
Special Chapter Four ✧ADAM MEADOWS✧“Baby, what are you doing?” I asked Jazz as I lay on the kitchen counter, my hands tied with her bra, completely naked.Jazzlene was rummaging through the fridge, her bare feet making soft padding sounds against the cool kitchen tiles. She was focused, her eyes scanning the shelves with determination. She wore nothing below the waist, just the shirt that matched her pajamas, its hem barely covering her hips, with no panties since I had taken them off earlier in the bedroom.Jazzlene’s movements were swift but purposeful, clearly on a mission. I had no idea what she was looking for in the fridge. We had just started foreplay when she brought me here and declared she was in charge. I wasn’t sure what her plan was, but I was nervous with my hands tied. She shifted aside a carton of milk, then some leftover takeout containers, all the while muttering softly to herself. Finally, her eyes lit up as she spotted what she was looking for—a can of whipping c
Special Chapter Three✧ADAM MEADOWS✧I thought I’d finally have Jazz all to myself for an entire week once her parents headed off to Hawaii. But just as I was planning to take her back to my penthouse, her obnoxious older brother decided to show up, claiming his flight was delayed by a day. So now, here I am, stuck in their house.I’m sitting in the dining room, watching as Jazz prepares dinner. Zane and I are seated across from each other at the counter, locked in a silent standoff. His arms are crossed, and every so often, he shakes his head and lets out a low chuckle, like he’s trying to get under my skin.“Something amusing?” I shot him a glare, the tension between us palpable. We were never like this before Jazz and I started dating, but I get it—he still can’t fully accept me.I couldn’t help but recall the serious conversation we had last month after we shoved each other into their backyard pool.[FLASHBACK]Zane was leaning against the porch railing, his eyes narrowing as he lo
Special Chapter Two✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿THE CITY lights shimmered through the floor-to-ceiling windows of Adam's penthouse bedroom, casting a gentle glow over the plush surroundings. The air was warm and heavy with the scent of passion as we lay intertwined on his bed, our bodies still humming with the echoes of our intimacy. Nestled in his arms, under the soft blanket, I felt an overwhelming sense of closeness and contentment."I'm embarrassed to go home tomorrow. Mom and Dad will definitely suspect something," I murmured. Earlier, I texted my mom saying I'd be late coming home because there was an event at the hotel and I had to work overtime. But after my first round with Adam tonight, he told me he couldn't let me go home just yet—he wanted to spend more time with me. So, I was forced to message my mom again, telling her I'd be staying overnight at the hotel. "You know how parents are—they have the weirdest sixth sense.""Then don't bother going home. Stay in my penthouse instead. I'll
Special Chapter One✿♡ JAZZLENE ♡✿"Crystal flower number two hundred thirty-one," I whispered softly, a smile forming as I admired the delicate crystal rose Adam handed me after I got into his car. He was waiting for me in the parking lot of M-Power Hotel, arriving slightly ahead of me to avoid being seen leaving together by the staff.“Do you want me to stop giving you flowers?” he asked, leaning in for a quick kiss, a playful smile on his lips.“No, not yet. Stop when we reach a thousand.” I giggled. Ever since he returned from Singapore, he's resumed his habit of giving me crystal flowers. The last count was two hundred ten before he left, and the collection has grown quite a bit since then.“So, where to now? Your place or mine?” he grinned at me.“Your place. Meadows Tower. I miss lounging in your penthouse,” I smiled back.“All right. Let’s go.”It's been a month since Adam officially started courting me after getting permission from Mom, Dad, and even Zane. Today is Mom and Dad’s 30th wedding anniversary, and the celebration is being held at M-Power Hotel. My brother, Zane, organized this surprise party for them and covered all the expenses himself. He didn’t ask me for a contribution since he earns more than me. However, he still doesn’t know I have the five million dollars Adam gave me.Speaking of Adam, it’s been twelve months since he started pursuing me. Exactly a year today, and it’s been five months since he left for Singapore.Yes, it’s been five months with no contact between us. Whenever I ask my brother about Adam, he can’t give me any answers because Adam’s friends haven’t replied to the group chat. This time, it was held at the M-Power Hotel. As official alumni now, we were also invited. The only one missing was Leigh, who’s currently in Australia for work. Despite the distance, we still manage to catch up through video calls whenever we all have time."How many months has he been trying to win you back?" Violet asked, taking a sip of her wine. I couldn't help but notice the men stealing glances at our table. In the past, it was me who drew their attention, but now it's Violet, especially since many here know she’s the daughter of the renowned businessman Jake Crystal. Several men had already approached our table, asking Violet to dance, but I turned them down on her behalf, remembering what Adam once said

You’re both in for it if I find out."I sighed. "We’re not meeting, you paranoid. Adam rarely drops by the hotel. From what I’ve heard from Sir Mikko, he only visits twice a week. He’s more often at Meadows Group.""Good. Because if I find out you're entertaining that jerk, I’ll tie the two of you together."It’s been a month since I started working as a receptionist at M-Power Hotel.
