Madeline’s POV
“I’ll ask you again, who are you?” I flinched from the sharpness of his words.
Forcing calmness, I looked straight into his blazing eyes. “I told you… Adeline Hansford.”
He let out a low growl, threatening, “And I believe I told you not to lie!”
Clutching my injured shoulder, I bit my lip, staying on my ground. “I’m not lying. I swear.”
He let out a cold smirk. “That’s funny because you know what I heard?”
A chill ran down my spine. Was the news about me, a princess, already spread? That couldn’t be that fast. Could it?
He crouched beside me, face leaning down. Tilting his head, he continued, “Because I heard someone went rogue and fled from the palace. And now, I find a suspicious little trespasser like you.”
Relief rushed into me after learning he didn’t know about my real identity. Knowing that I could never be a Rogue because of my royal blood, a Lycan basically owns the entire werewolf kingdom, so I kept calm.
Looking up, I dared him with a shaky voice, “Take a whiff. I’m no Rogue.”
He narrowed his eyes in contemplation before he closed his eyes and took a deep whiff.
“Then who are you?” he asked after.
“I’m no one important. I… I just came here because…” I struggled to think. I couldn’t say it’s Rogues because he could obviously know that there weren’t Rogues around in one whiff.
“Because what?” he hissed, making me jolt.
So before I could process anything, I blurted out, “Because I’m being chased by my old pack. They want me dead.”
My skin went cold after I blurted out the truth. But with me not smelling like a Rogue, I could only hope he wouldn’t manage to put two things together.
“Oh, yeah? And why’s that?” I whimpered when he grabbed my arm tightly, pulling me close to him as if he’d find the answer on my face.
Struggling for words, I replied half-truthfully, “Because… Because they think I’m dangerous.”
He let out a mocking laugh, pushing me away and making me fall to the ground, with only my arm stopping my face from falling into the dirt. “You? Dangerous?”
Pointing at my current appearance, he mocked, “You can barely stand.”
Frustration filled my soul. Sitting back up, I tried to wipe off as much dirt as I could. “I don’t expect you to understand, but I can’t go back and…”
Taking a deep breath, I looked at him, almost bedding, “I don’t have anywhere to go, and I want to live. Please don’t kill me.”
He looked at me for a long moment, making my stomach churn. How could I even try to beg a merciless man like him when he was known to be at best at killing people?
“Fine.”
The surprise I felt when he stood up and grudgingly said his next words sounded surreal to me.
“What? W-what did you say?” I asked in disbelief.
In a low, harsh voice, he dictated, “You’ll come with me to Demonmaw.”
My eyes widened. “Wait— W-what?”
All I wanted was to be spared. Maybe he could let me go, and I could go on my way once I rested enough and got back my strength. How could I possibly go to a pack known to be most dangerous?
Taking a few steps away from me as if he’d leave me if I didn’t follow him, he said, “My warriors spotted some unknown wolves lurking and patrolling a few miles away as if they’re tracking someone.”
Turning back, he sent me a glare, “And I don’t want to give anyone an excuse to start a war if your pack came and found you here.”
When he saw I had no plans to move, he angrily strode over me and grabbed me by my arm, dragging me with him.
I struggled to be free, but he was far too strong. “What will you do to me?”
“What do you think?” Those were his last words before he went harsher and carried me over his shoulder like a bag of sand back to his pack house.
Upside down, I could see us getting nearer to their main pack house. Just right at the gate, he carelessly threw me into a pile of wheat straws, making me shout in pain while the post guards’ eyes widened in shock.
“Alpha, who’s this?” The nearest guard pointed his spear at me, freezing me on the spot, not even allowing me to take a deep breath after the pain I felt as the tip of his spear was right on my neck.
Nonchalantly gesturing at me, he replied, “She’s a stray I found on the border. She’s staying until I decide what to do with her.
The other guard suspiciously stepped closer and took a look at me. “A refugee then…”
While the other one put down his spear, making me sight.
Keiran’s face immediately went dim. “More like a problem I don’t need right now.
“Nice…” I sarcastically sighed, thinking he already got far as he was speaking while walking toward the gate.
But I was wrong again.
He turned and narrowed his eyes at me, shooting me a deadly glare as he slid a knife at my neck out of nowhere. “You were saying?”
Madeline’s POVNervously, I raised my hand and used my index fingertip to try to push the knife a little further from my neck and forced a terrible smile, “I said thanks… Thank you for letting me stay.”“Stay in this dangerous place where the word ruthless probably was born…” I added silently.Completely unimpressed, he put down the knife and threw it on the hidden sheath on his combat boots. “Don’t thank me yet. You haven’t seen what Demonmaw is really like.”With that, he turned and faced the two guards who sneaked earlier and was now immediately shut off with his mere stare. “See that she’s fed and has somewhere to rest.”Sitting properly, letting my legs on the ground, I quietly said, “I can take care of myself.”Instantly, a cold smile formed on his lips. “That’s funny when it’s coming from someone I just dragged out of the dirt.”My brows furrowed, and without thinking, I glared at him, forgetting every fear as it was covered with annoyance. “Well, I didn’t ask for your help and
Keiran’s POVThe moment I took a whiff, her scent hit me, letting it fill my senses as I loomed over her. I knew she wasn’t a rogue, just as she claimed. This made sense because Rogues wouldn’t be stumbling in my land unless they had a death wish. Her scent didn’t carry the wild bitterness and chaos most Rogues had, but it seemed a little bit off… No… in fact, a little bit familiar. It’s subtle, but it almost had a mix of the scent of chestnut and mint. I couldn’t point a finger at whether it was indeed the same scent I had been looking for three years, though because it was faint and a bit different.“Adeline… Adeline Hansford.”I kept my eyes on her. If she was lying, which I was damn sure she was, I’d find out soon enough. But the real question was why she was lying.I’d seen countless wolves hide before. Most of them were cowards running from debts, deserters feeling their Alpha’s wrath, and so many more, but they never ran to hide in the most dangerous pack, my pack. And even if
Madeline’s POVMy eyes locked with Alpha Keiran, and I didn’t look away. Neither did he as he continued, “Some of you will break before the week is over.”His voice boomed in their training hall, giving a chill to every new warrior in training. And honestly, so did mine, but I didn’t show it.Demonmaw Nightwalkers Pack were known for its ruthlessness and mercilessness. If I wanted to escape here, I needed first to survive. And to do so… I needed to blend in.“Nice pep talk…” I couldn’t help but sarcastically remark under my breath.Keiran obviously put me in with this new batch of warriors to scare me away. Well, I’m about to prove him wrong.
Madeline’s POV“First day in the academy, and you’re already sparring right after the night I aided your wounds, really?” Mara, the pack doctor, sarcastically greeted me as I entered the infirmary. For some reason, I wasn’t imprisoned in that tiny barracks now, but it still was my room. And I’m now officially enrolled in the academy, as per Keiran’s orders. What exactly was running through his mind was something I couldn’t comprehend. On the bright side, hiding in here wasn’t a bad idea either. After all, where else was the best place to hide but in a place where everyone least expected I’d be?Sitting down on the bed, I removed my hoodie. “Tell that to you, Alpha,” I snarked.“Oh, wow! That’s one hell of a strike. Who did it?” she asked with a scrunched-up face after I removed my shirt to show the claw mark on my shoulder on top of my previous injury after Jaxon clutched it.I replied flatly, “Jaxon.”Her hands halted from cleaning my wound, looking at me in shock. “Jaxon? He’s the t
Madeline’s POV“Don’t hold back.” Helena grinned with her arms raised, blocking her face while jumping a little in place. We were in the forest where field training was done. Since it’s not an official sparring, there’s no instructor watching us. But words did spread fast, especially when it turned out that Elena was the first in the senior class. Before we knew it, trainees were already circling around us, watching with great interest.Raising my arms and getting into a fighting stance, I dryly replied, “I won’t if you won’t.”The fight began, and cheer and advice were shouted from the crowd, but Helena and I were living in our own world. At first, I easily dodged her attacks with my speed and fast reflex, but that seemed to have pushed Helena’s button because she started attacking more aggressively.“Not bad… but I thought you were tougher,” she remarks with a smirk as she breathes hard while pertaining to how I’d just block her attacks or dodge.I nodded my head and narrowed my eye
Keiran’s POV“Those stupid trainees. If they want to undergo unsupervised sparring, they should never have themselves get caught.” Ted entered my office, shaking his head in annoyance.Leaning back, I looked at him with a raised brow. “That’s what you’re annoyed about?”Slumming himself down the couch, he questionably looked at me, “What else?”“Hey! Where are you going?” he asked as I shook my head and stood up, going for the door.“It’s time for afternoon training. Let’s wish you didn’t tire them all out, or they’ll annoy the hell out of me when they fail.” With that, I slammed the door shut and went to the academy.
Madeline’s POVOne second, I was mesmerised by the delectable dishes on the buffet, and the next thing I knew, I was being pinned down on the couch by this bipolar of an Alpha in front of me.A frown formed on my lips as soon as he said something about my scent. Was he sick? How could he have known my scent when we didn’t even know each other until a few days ago? He’s not some pervert, was he?As soon as that thought came into my mind, though, I immediately shook it off. Keiran and his pack were known for many bad things, but bullying a woman wasn’t one of those.Hence, I merely frown. “I doubt that.”His face turned dark, leaning forward as he spoke in a dangerous tone, as though he wasa second away from losing control. “Three years ago, I found someone…”He paused, and I was drowned further into looking at him as I saw how he took a deep, controlled breath, something I would usually do whenever I remember my mother’s accident and didn’t want tovisualisee it all over again. My eyes
Keiran’s POVI could feel her staring at me, but I kept being nonchalant. But as soon as she closed the door behind her, I carelessly threw the paper I was pretending to read onto my desk, leaning back to my seat and pinching the bridge of my nose in frustration. Our little conversation lingered in my mind, repeating over and over again that it was almost making me crazy. After pouring myself some whisky, I stared at my glass, watching its amber liquid swirl lazily, synced with my hand movement while I tapped my fingers on my armrest, yet my mind was anything but calm.“She’s lying… or she’s hiding something…”She couldn’t even look straight into my eyes when she said she didn’t know what I was talking about.“She’s connected to Francine’s death! I know it!” Brax, my wolf, growled in my mind. I could feel his frustration and anger, which matched mine.It can’t be her... I told myself for what felt like the hundredth time. But doubt gnawed at me like a festering wound. That scent... the
Madeline’s POVWe stood in silence as the wind rustled around us as if sucking something from within our souls… And after a few minutes, I felt free… I felt light…When I rejected Felix, there was a heavy feeling that lingered within me, the small piece of our mate bond, which I thought I could live through and wouldn’t matter along the way. But when he spoke those words and accepted my rejection, it felt different.A subconscious smile spread from my lips as I heaved a sigh of relief. I didn’t know I was holding on.He let out a scoff that hid beneath his small smile. “Now, you’re smiling. I guess I did the right thing.”Hearing him say that made me realise that I was being a little insensitive. Indeed, he broke my heart, but he was also my childhood best friend and the one who helped me escape, and he was still helping me now.“I’m sorry,” I whispered, after all, he was here in an enemy pack and risking his life…My brows furrowed. Did he risk his life just to accept my rejection?C
Madeline’s POVBecause of what happened last night, the patrol and security around the pack house became even tighter.“Come on, we’ll be late!” I shouted from downstairs while waiting for Helena, who was rushing from the pack house. Without her, I might not be able to leave and meet with Felix.Fortunately, she had plans to go to the market today and buy some supplies for the training.“Why are you in a rush, girl?” she asked suspiciously as soon as we got settled in the car.Rolling down the car window, I let the fresh breeze of air blow my hair and the warmth of the sunlight touch my skin. With my eyes closed, enjoying the sensation, I replied, “I just want the fresh air. It felt like forever since I got out of the pack. That was the truth, though. Since I got inside the pack house, I never left the pack, and that’s what most of us thought as well – that I was a prisoner. At first, I went with Helena everywhere she wanted me to go. We checked boxing gloves, weapons, and even new tr
Madeline’s POVSilence engulfed us once again, and yet I still feel like the surroundings were as loud as when rock music was being played by how fast and loud my heart was beating.“Don’t give in…” I told myself silently while fighting the urge to tell him the truth.I shook my head firmly and shrugged my shoulders. “Like I said a thousand times, I’m no one. I’m just trying to survive, is all.”Keiran narrowed his eyes and leaned closer, breath fanning against my lips. “Then why does Jason think otherwise?”My eyes widened while my breath hitched, bringing a crack to my facade. “W-what?” Feeling how I panicked, I tried to mask it as fast as I could and cleared my throat. “What did he say?”He studied me for a while, fingers tapping on the dresser behind him. “He’s been looking through sealed royal documents, and we had a witness that he’s been reporting to someone in the kingdom.”Could I really not hide it anymore?I bit my inner cheek as I racked my brain while contemplating a lot.
Madeline’s POV“You don’t have to replace her,” I whispered. “But you can still let someone in. You’re allowed to feel again.”His throat bobbed with a swallow. For a second, he looked away—just for a second. Then, he shifted, leaning closer. “You always talk like you know exactly what’s right.”“I don’t,” I admitted, my voice barely a breath. “But we can’t stop moving forward just because of fear and pain, right?”I shrugged my shoulders and scoffed, “I mean, look at me, running from one nightmare to the pack where they call the hell of the kingdom.”It was meant to be a tease, making me let out a subconscious laugh, but he didn’t seem to find it funny because he just kept staring at me.The trees rustled behind us as the wind brushed our skin. Our surroundings turned cold, and yet there’s this unexplainable warmth that circulates through my heart.Slowly, he started leaning closer, and my eyes had a heavy urge to close. But just as his face was millimetres apart from mine, I jolted
Madeline’s POVI knew it—it was the Snakefield crest. It was the same tree I’d seen Keiran staring at the other day. I raised my hand and slid my fingertips across it, tracing the worn ridges of the carving. It must’ve been made weeks ago, maybe more—it was already starting to fade, and the edges were soft with time. But then my hand froze.I felt something sharper, fresher. My eyes narrowed, and I heightened my senses, my vision sharpening with a faint golden glow.“These markings weren’t here before…” I whispered.Beneath the emblem of the Snakefield Pack, a new detail had been added—its name, recently carved in. The letters felt raw against my skin, the edges still rough. It had been done not long ago.My heart beat a little faster.I glanced around, scanning the trees with squinted eyes, the quiet pressing in around me. The forest felt tense, but after a few long seconds, I saw and heard nothing. No movement. No threat.Turning back to the tree, I took a step back and crossed my a
Madeline’s POVI clenched my hands tightly at my sides while I tried to steady my breathing and force my racing heart to slow down. But damn, was it still so loud that I could almost swear he might hear it thudding in my chest if he listened closely enough. After all, I could even feel my pulse pounding on my temple.“I don’t!” I blurted out way too quickly, and his eyes narrowed, suspicion flashing through his sharp brown eyes.I forced myself to breathe and let out a light, dismissive sigh. “At least, not the one you’re thinking of,” I added with a casual shrug, acting and trying to sound unfazed. “But… I grew up near there. That’s all.”He leaned in a little toward it. It wasn’t threatening, but I could feel the curiosity behind his probing gaze. His voice came out slow and deliberate, almost cautious. “It’s strange how much you seem to know about it.”I raised an eyebrow at him while my lips curved into a teasing smirk. “Strange how you know the same things.”He let out a low laug
Madeline’s POV“You’re slipping, Adeline. That last swing was pathetic,” Helena commented with a huge smirk spreading on her face behind her raised arm while she was still in a defensive stance.“Maybe you’re just punching faster than usual.” I panted as I stopped and rolled my eyes at her.Shaking my head, I turned around, silently signalling the end of our little spar.Grabbing a water bottle and towel, I dropped to the ground with a thud and wiped off the sweat from my face before gulping half the contents of the bottle in one go.“Or maybe,” Helena said as she sat down in front of me, and continued, “you’re just distracted.”I scoffed but didn’t answer. Still, her silent stare lingered, making me feel tense. Only when I looked back at her did I realise that her stare turned into teasing. She wiggled her brows and flicked a glance toward the other group of trainees, where Keiran stood, towering, and barking orders like a drill sergeant from hell.“Thinking about a certain brooding
Madeline’s POVHe didn’t respond. He just sat there, staring at me like he was trying to read my thoughts, like he was trying to memorise me.And despite everything he’d said, his walls hadn’t fully crumbled. There was just a crack in them. And somehow, I was standing right in it.Whether that was fortunate or not… only time would tell.“Don’t make the mistake of caring for me, Adeline,” he said quietly after a long silence.I shrugged and stood up, smirking faintly. “Too late.”As I walked out of his office and into my room, I couldn’t stop my mind from replaying everything that had happened between us. The shift was so sudden, like whiplash. One minute we were at each other’s throats—or more like, he was at mine—and now this...Maybe it was the anger that made him snap open. Maybe it was hearing about Francine. Or maybe it was an accident. A moment of weakness. But whatever it was, it left something behind—something raw and quietly terrifying. That little crack between us... It was
Madeline's POVThe air was heavy with silence engulfing us in a warm but tense embrace. The silence felt unbearable as I sat in front of him, watching him look troubled. His elbows were on his desk, hands clasped together, supporting his bowed head. He looked so much in pain, guilt radiating all over him.Seeing the inner struggle he seemed to be putting himself into, I sighed and extended my hand, squeezing his. “You let him go. The pup… You did great, Keiran. You’re not the monster everyone sees you to be.”Everyone looked at him like a monster, despite the respect they had for him as their Alpha. He might have done well in the pack, which they saw, but the fear they had toward him from what happened that day was still embedded in their hearts. An alpha feared by his own pack… How hard could that be?He looked up at me, shaking his head slowly. “It wasn’t mercy either. I was just… afraid. I didn’t want to face him.”His face was tense, his jaws clenching and lips pursing. “I didn’t
