Madeline’s POV
Felix's hold on my wrist tightened as he nodded toward the cliff. “There’s a ledge. If we do it now, we can jump a few feet and climb down before they see us.”
I threw a glare at him almost instantly, hissing, “If this kills me, I’m haunting you!”
He managed a weak smile, eyes glinting with the same uncertainty as mine. Nonetheless, he confidently said, “Deal.”
Taking my hand, we both jumped. But since the ground below was smooth and on the slope, it didn’t go as we planned. Instead, we slid down and tumbled through leaves and dirt, covering our clothes.
Some small stones and twigs even caused bruises and cuts on our clothes and skin. It only happened for a while as I was slammed into a rock, giving us a full stop.
But before I could register the pain it caused to my dislocated shoulder, Felix pulled me up, and we stumbled to our feet.
“Come on! They’re still coming,” he groaned.
And just as he said, I saw shadows following behind us. Some even shifted to make their jump much smoother.
We ran faster into the forest, pushing through everything that came our way until we slid down under one of the giant trees with a hidden hole under its root, hiding.
Laying on our stomachs, squishing inside that tight space, I clutched my shoulder where the pain was now starting to make me grimace.
“I still don’t trust you,” I hissed at him.
Panting, he shook his head. “I wouldn’t either.”
He paused for a while, staring deeply into my eyes before seriously saying, “But I’m not going to let them hurt you either.”
Like a fool, my heart pounded at his words. “Why?”
Because you’re still…” he hesitated, and tension built up in the air between us until he heaved a sigh and broke it, “You’re still my friend, Maddie.”
His words hung heavily between us, and our eyes locked with each other for a while before I turned away, unsure of how to respond to them.
Friend…
And yet, I still couldn’t fully understand what he wanted and why he was doing what he was doing. One second, he wanted to reject me, and the next, he was helping me escape death.
If he really treated me as a friend, he might as well just accept my rejection to completely cut off the bond.
“Maddie, you know–”
His words were cut off when we started picking up movements around us.
We looked at each other in panic as we heard several footsteps vibrating on the ground.
“We need to leave,” I insisted, ready to crawl out of the hiding spot, but he stopped me.
Determination glinted in his eyes as he shook his head. “No, stay here and hide. I’ll distract them.”
“What? But…”
He didn’t let me finish as he crawled out and started putting some rocks around the entrance of the hole first, leaving only a few holes to make sure I wouldn’t run out of oxygen and be buried alive.
And then… I was alone again…
Through the hole, I watched as his figure got smaller and smaller. And indeed, after a few seconds, several guards ran in his direction, thinking I was with him.
Once they were completely gone and a bit further, I dug myself out and ran deeper into the forest, completely unsure of where I should go.
Before I knew it, I crossed into unfamiliar territory. I looked around, but it felt like the forest was spinning, and my legs gave out from complete exhaustion. Leaning on one of the trees, I slid down to the ground.
I leaned my head back, clutching my shoulder in an attempt to lessen the pain.
Before I realised it, an hour had passed, and I was still frozen in there, completely out of energy.
My eyelids started getting heavy, but before I could fully close it and fell into a slumber, my body tens,e and hair on the back of my hair rose in alertness as I heard a deep growl rumble behind me.
Breathing heavily, I cautiously and slowly turned around, but I froze at the sight of a massive black wolf staring at me with those piercing golden eyes.
It locked its gaze on me. It’s every stand and movement shouting power and danger.
“No… I…” I tried to speak and explain something I didn’t even know about.
But my words rolled back to my throat as it stepped closer.
I tried to back away from the tree as it moved behind it, but before I could stand and force myself to run, the wolf shifted behind the tree, and a tall, tan-skinned man towered before me.
My heart pounded, both starstruck and scared.
He only had a short on, which rested lowly on his hips, giving a tease of his v-line. I swallowed as my eyes ran upwards and met his eight-pack abs and muscular chest before I locked eyes with his captivating dark brown eyes.
“You’re on my land.” His voice boomed in the silence, menacing and sharp.
And that’s when everything clicked to m:; giant black wolf, golden eyes, killer demeanour, and goldy appearance…
He’s Alpha Keiran, the Alpha of the Deamonmaw Nightwalkers Pack. A pack known for its ruthless ways, the only pack on par with the kingdom and feared by many. Even the palace was cautious of them and didn’t want to cause chaos without massive reason.
Breathless, I replied, “I… I didn’t mean to–”
“Who are you?” he cut me off, only making the pounding of my heart so loud I could hear my own heartbeat.
What should I say? Telling my name would immediately declare that I’m one of the princesses. What if he sends me back?
After a pause of contemplation, I steeled myself and replied, “I’m… Adeline. Adeline Hansford.”
He eyed me with suspicion.
“Lying’s a bad idea here,” he hissed, and that’s when I knew if I had thought I was in danger earlier, I was so wrong.
Madeline’s POV“I’ll ask you again, who are you?” I flinched from the sharpness of his words.Forcing calmness, I looked straight into his blazing eyes. “I told you… Adeline Hansford.”He let out a low growl, threatening, “And I believe I told you not to lie!”Clutching my injured shoulder, I bit my lip, staying on my ground. “I’m not lying. I swear.”He let out a cold smirk. “That’s funny because you know what I heard?”A chill ran down my spine. Was the news about me, a princess, already spread? That couldn’t be that fast. Could it?He crouched beside me, face leaning down. Tilting his head, he continued, “Because I heard someone went rogue and fled from the palace. And now, I find a suspicious little trespasser like you.”Relief rushed into me after learning he didn’t know about my real identity. Knowing that I could never be a Rogue because of my royal blood, a Lycan basically owns the entire werewolf kingdom, so I kept calm.Looking up, I dared him with a shaky voice, “Take a whi
Madeline’s POVNervously, I raised my hand and used my index fingertip to try to push the knife a little further from my neck and forced a terrible smile, “I said thanks… Thank you for letting me stay.”“Stay in this dangerous place where the word ruthless probably was born…” I added silently.Completely unimpressed, he put down the knife and threw it on the hidden sheath on his combat boots. “Don’t thank me yet. You haven’t seen what Demonmaw is really like.”With that, he turned and faced the two guards who sneaked earlier and was now immediately shut off with his mere stare. “See that she’s fed and has somewhere to rest.”Sitting properly, letting my legs on the ground, I quietly said, “I can take care of myself.”Instantly, a cold smile formed on his lips. “That’s funny when it’s coming from someone I just dragged out of the dirt.”My brows furrowed, and without thinking, I glared at him, forgetting every fear as it was covered with annoyance. “Well, I didn’t ask for your help and
Keiran’s POVThe moment I took a whiff, her scent hit me, letting it fill my senses as I loomed over her. I knew she wasn’t a rogue, just as she claimed. This made sense because Rogues wouldn’t be stumbling in my land unless they had a death wish. Her scent didn’t carry the wild bitterness and chaos most Rogues had, but it seemed a little bit off… No… in fact, a little bit familiar. It’s subtle, but it almost had a mix of the scent of chestnut and mint. I couldn’t point a finger at whether it was indeed the same scent I had been looking for three years, though because it was faint and a bit different.“Adeline… Adeline Hansford.”I kept my eyes on her. If she was lying, which I was damn sure she was, I’d find out soon enough. But the real question was why she was lying.I’d seen countless wolves hide before. Most of them were cowards running from debts, deserters feeling their Alpha’s wrath, and so many more, but they never ran to hide in the most dangerous pack, my pack. And even if
Madeline’s POVMy eyes locked with Alpha Keiran, and I didn’t look away. Neither did he as he continued, “Some of you will break before the week is over.”His voice boomed in their training hall, giving a chill to every new warrior in training. And honestly, so did mine, but I didn’t show it.Demonmaw Nightwalkers Pack were known for its ruthlessness and mercilessness. If I wanted to escape here, I needed first to survive. And to do so… I needed to blend in.“Nice pep talk…” I couldn’t help but sarcastically remark under my breath.Keiran obviously put me in with this new batch of warriors to scare me away. Well, I’m about to prove him wrong.
Madeline’s POV“First day in the academy, and you’re already sparring right after the night I aided your wounds, really?” Mara, the pack doctor, sarcastically greeted me as I entered the infirmary. For some reason, I wasn’t imprisoned in that tiny barracks now, but it still was my room. And I’m now officially enrolled in the academy, as per Keiran’s orders. What exactly was running through his mind was something I couldn’t comprehend. On the bright side, hiding in here wasn’t a bad idea either. After all, where else was the best place to hide but in a place where everyone least expected I’d be?Sitting down on the bed, I removed my hoodie. “Tell that to you, Alpha,” I snarked.“Oh, wow! That’s one hell of a strike. Who did it?” she asked with a scrunched-up face after I removed my shirt to show the claw mark on my shoulder on top of my previous injury after Jaxon clutched it.I replied flatly, “Jaxon.”Her hands halted from cleaning my wound, looking at me in shock. “Jaxon? He’s the t
Madeline’s POV“Don’t hold back.” Helena grinned with her arms raised, blocking her face while jumping a little in place. We were in the forest where field training was done. Since it’s not an official sparring, there’s no instructor watching us. But words did spread fast, especially when it turned out that Elena was the first in the senior class. Before we knew it, trainees were already circling around us, watching with great interest.Raising my arms and getting into a fighting stance, I dryly replied, “I won’t if you won’t.”The fight began, and cheer and advice were shouted from the crowd, but Helena and I were living in our own world. At first, I easily dodged her attacks with my speed and fast reflex, but that seemed to have pushed Helena’s button because she started attacking more aggressively.“Not bad… but I thought you were tougher,” she remarks with a smirk as she breathes hard while pertaining to how I’d just block her attacks or dodge.I nodded my head and narrowed my eye
Keiran’s POV“Those stupid trainees. If they want to undergo unsupervised sparring, they should never have themselves get caught.” Ted entered my office, shaking his head in annoyance.Leaning back, I looked at him with a raised brow. “That’s what you’re annoyed about?”Slumming himself down the couch, he questionably looked at me, “What else?”“Hey! Where are you going?” he asked as I shook my head and stood up, going for the door.“It’s time for afternoon training. Let’s wish you didn’t tire them all out, or they’ll annoy the hell out of me when they fail.” With that, I slammed the door shut and went to the academy.
Madeline’s POVOne second, I was mesmerised by the delectable dishes on the buffet, and the next thing I knew, I was being pinned down on the couch by this bipolar of an Alpha in front of me.A frown formed on my lips as soon as he said something about my scent. Was he sick? How could he have known my scent when we didn’t even know each other until a few days ago? He’s not some pervert, was he?As soon as that thought came into my mind, though, I immediately shook it off. Keiran and his pack were known for many bad things, but bullying a woman wasn’t one of those.Hence, I merely frown. “I doubt that.”His face turned dark, leaning forward as he spoke in a dangerous tone, as though he wasa second away from losing control. “Three years ago, I found someone…”He paused, and I was drowned further into looking at him as I saw how he took a deep, controlled breath, something I would usually do whenever I remember my mother’s accident and didn’t want tovisualisee it all over again. My eyes
Madeline’s POVI wanted to comprehend what Francine was trying to tell me. Analyze who she wanted me to protect. But before I could actually think straight, the guilt started eating me alive, more than it did a few years back. The whispers of my packmates filled with scrutiny before never felt so real as they echoed in my mind. All their accusations, resentment, and hatred that I managed to push away started to feel so heavy.“She killed the Queen.”“It’s all because of her.”“Damn, right it is, she’s cursed!”“It should’ve been her instead…”“Stop…” I breathed heavily, clutching my chest as I put down my legs on the floor and sat on the edge of my bed with my torso bent down and head bowed between my legs, gasping for air, begging, “Stop it…”My palms were pressed on my ears, rocking myself slightly to ease the panic crushing my soul.“Adeline? Adeline! Are you there?”I turned my head in panic, looking at the pounding knock as I heard Helena’s voice outside, knocking.Covering my li
Madeline’s POVThe night was deep, and the breeze was cold. The wind rustled through the trees while I was seated on the giant tree’s roots, curled into a ball, with my eyes stinging from tears. My hands were covering my ears, trying to block out the voices that followed me wherever I went. I was gifted, with a hearing heightened than average werewolves. But growing up, it's more of a curse than a gift.I could hear from miles away the whispers of blame, resentment, and hatred coming from my pack members and my family. The scrutiny they have over me… All the while, all they had for Amanda was sweet praises. But their words, as sharp as swords,s weren’t what pained me. In fact, I was long numbed by those things. What really hurt me was the non-stop voices I heard a few
Keiran’s POVThe sight of that scar really fueled the burning fire within me, and I momentarily lost control of myself. How could I do that in front of my pack? More importantly, in front of the trainees. After storming off, I went straight to my office, slamming the door right as I entered.“She’s lying!” Brax growled.Shaking my head, I grabbed my swivel chair and opened my locked drawer, pulling out a picture frame from the inside. It’s a photo of me and Francine when we got married. “I don’t know, Brax… Maybe she really doesn’t remember.”He let out a snarl. “You saw the way she panicked. She’s hiding something.”“
Madeline’s POVMy heart raced incredibly fast as I watched Keiran storm off, leaving me standing there surrounded by clueless yet curious trainees.Swallowing with difficulty, I raised my shirt and covered my scar before running off, feeling the silence that fell on the training ground suddenly deafening and their stares were like lasers to my my skin. With my back on the mirror, I removed my shirt, looking back behind me through the mirror as I raced my scar with my finger. The memory of that tragic night once again flickered in my mind. My mother’s frantic shouts and the metallic scent of blood in the air. “Maddie! No!”That was my mother’s scream befo
Keiran’s POV“How is it going?” I asked as I entered the academy’s backfield, standing beside Ted, who was supervising today’s sparring session.Today, he had made them spar on the field. He nodded at the middle of the field where Adeline was battling with a bulky freshman. If I remembered it right, he’s Gage, the Gamma’s nephew.I crossed my arms and sharply watched as pairs of trainees simultaneously sparred.Dort covered their combat boots from hours of relentless drills, sweat drenching their shirts, and exhaustion visible in their rugged breathing.Others already fell to the side, muscle spasming from over-fatigue.“She’s still up…&rdquo
Madeline’s POVMy thoughts were still filled with my confrontation with Keiran. I sat on the edge of my bed, my fingers absentmindedly tracing the scar on my right shoulder blade, and my breathing got uneven.“He didn’t think I had something to do with that person’s death, would he?” I asked under my breath, silently wondering how that person could bring out such an intense reaction from a cold man like him.He wasn’t just angry. The guilt, pain, and remorse were radiating all over him. It was faint, but he must have been too overwhelmed that he didn’t completely mask his feelings from me earlier. “Let’s go back! Maddie.”
Keiran’s POVI could feel her staring at me, but I kept being nonchalant. But as soon as she closed the door behind her, I carelessly threw the paper I was pretending to read onto my desk, leaning back to my seat and pinching the bridge of my nose in frustration. Our little conversation lingered in my mind, repeating over and over again that it was almost making me crazy. After pouring myself some whisky, I stared at my glass, watching its amber liquid swirl lazily, synced with my hand movement while I tapped my fingers on my armrest, yet my mind was anything but calm.“She’s lying… or she’s hiding something…”She couldn’t even look straight into my eyes when she said she didn’t know what I was talking about.“She’s connected to Francine’s death! I know it!” Brax, my wolf, growled in my mind. I could feel his frustration and anger, which matched mine.It can’t be her... I told myself for what felt like the hundredth time. But doubt gnawed at me like a festering wound. That scent... the
