Maya POV
Once out of the supermarket, I start running through the poorly lightened parking lot pushing a very dysfunctional cart. I get to my car, unlock it and start throwing my groceries on the backseats while getting drenched by the hard rain. The weather is supposed to get worst during the next few days. Thank god it's Friday and I'm free this weekend, I plan to spend it sleeping, eating and watching movies. That's why I bought everything I might need and more.
I start the car and turn the heater on, my feet are wet and cold, wearing converse on a rainy day is very stupid, should take it off? I debate about it but decide against it when I remember that I'll have to put it back again later. I start driving back to my place, I need to be extra careful in this weather, even if the streets are basically deserted right now, the pouring rain makes it very hard to see so I drive like a snail, I'm in no rush better safe than sorry.
A couple of blocks away from the supermarket I see the silhouette of a dog crossing the street, I slow down to give it enough time to cross safely but the dog stops in the middle of the street and start snarling when I get closer. I stop the car startled by his reaction, the truth is I don't get along with dogs in general and strays are the worst, they always snarl at me for no reason, someone told me once 'that they are challenging me'. but I'm not sure about that.
The dog gets closer and I can see clearly how big this dog is, I instinctively look at the dashboard to make sure that the car's lock is on 'As if the dog is going to open the door'. It gets closer and I freeze, it's not a dog, no it's a big gray wolf with glowing red eyes standing in front of the car. Why is there a wolf in here? The wolf advance slowly and dangerously then start sniffing the front of the car, I don't think It can see me with the brightness of the headlights but I'm sure It can hear my fast-beating heart.
One last sniff and then it throws it's head back and howls. To my utmost horror, two more wolves appear from both sides of my car, these two are smaller and have a lighter color to their matted fur. One of them stops by my window and stares straight into my eyes with a weird expression, I'm too shocked to look away, the wolf makes a weird sound before joining the first one. They stand next to each other staring at me and snarling showing me their pointy fangs but they don't make any other move. I don't know how much time passed with them standing there in the rain but eventually they walk away without looking back.
I don't waste any time and speed away despite my trembling hands. It's over, they are gone, they were just passing by, I keep repeating to my self, that's probably what just happened but deep down I know I'm fooling my self. I've been living in this town for seven months now and it's the first time I've seen a wolf around.
I don't know how I made it safely to my place but I was here parked in the side alley of the local coffee place. My place is a small two-bedroom apartment on the second floor of the building, I still remember how happy and lucky I was when I found it. The owner of the coffee place used to live there but with his family getting bigger he moved out, renting it to me.
I turn off the car and stare ahead. I'm still shaking and nothing makes sense. I start sneezing and that's my cue to step out of the car but instead of unloading my groceries I walk inside the coffee shop, I need some answers and some caffeine. The moment I step in, I'm welcomed with the warmth of the shop and the smell of roasted coffee beans. "The usual?", the teen barista asks with a shy smile, "Yes, please" I smile back and look around, the place is pretty crowded for a rainy day like this one, mostly young couples. "Guess not everyone is bothered by the rain" I say watching him prepare my Latte, "Well, I guess dates on rainy days are romantic," He hands me my mug with a light blush and I pay for my drink, "Thanks and good night", I take a couple of steps and then turn around, "Hey, I saw wolves on my way back from the supermarket, is it normal around here?", the surprise in his face is my answer, "Are you sure it wasn't just big dogs? It's hard to see in this rain", I pretend to hesitate for a moment, "I'm pretty sure, one of them stood by my window and it was not a dog", he stays silent for few second and I'm pretty sure he still thinks that it was a big dogs that I saw, "Well,I'll ask around if someone else saw it, but I'm pretty sure we don't have wolves around here", I thank him one more time and walk out. When I step out, I put the hood of my padded coat on my head and speed walk to the stares that I climb easily. I take a deep breath before I unlock the door and walk in, I put my coffee on the kitchen island and start taking off my drenched coat and shoes.
"Where are the groceries?", I lift my head and smile to the gorgeous blond girl standing in front of me in her ''angry birds' pajamas
"in the car" I answer and walk past her to the bathroom.
"And...." She asks following me,
"And I needed to pee very badly" I close the door and do my business but I can feel her still standing on the other side. I wash my hands and walk out.
"you needed to pee very badly but brought your coffee up with you" she says with an amused face while crossing her arms.
"Well I figured that I would need my coffee" I say playfully and walk into my bedroom opposite to the bathroom, she follows me
"Need it for what?"
"To give me energy of course!! energy in order to go back down and unload the groceries which will take at least three trips to get it all up here thanks to the long list you gave me" I put on a new pair of socks and reach for my snow boots, the one I should've worn instead of my converse.
"Stay, I'll do it, you should take a hot shower instead, you're hands are shaking" she turns to leave my room but I grab her hand harder than I intended
"No, you shouldn't go outside tonight" I smile softly at her frowning face than resume putting on my boots,I can feel her intense gaze on me but I chose to ignore it. I walk back to the entrance, take a sip of my coffee, put on a raincoat and walk out. As predicted It took me three trips to get everything up. Once I'm done I get back downstairs and move my car to the back alley, away from praying eyes, just in case. When I get back I lock the door and head for the so needed hot shower. One hour later I walk out of my room in my 'snoopy's pajamas, woolen socks and a towel on my head. I sit on the kitchen stool and take another sip of my coffee while busying my self on my phone.
"Did something happen while you were out?" she asks while serving dinner,
"Chicken soup and garlic bread!! It smells delicious, you're the best" I put down my phone and start eating the moment she sits down in the stool next to me.
"Maya please answer me, you're hiding something, tell me please I'm not a kid I can help"
"You're seventeen, you're a kid" I say teasing her
"I'm turning eighteen next month and you know I'm no kid" she frowns and give me an intense glare with her hazel eyes. I snort and resume eating, she doesn't argue back and I'm thankful. I need more time to think through things and I don't want to scare her, she is still a kid and she'll always be one to me, she will always be the frail little girl I met years ago on a fateful night that opened my eyes to a hidden world I've never suspected before, the girl I promised to take care of until she finds her safe haven.
After dinner, I move to the couch still busy with my phone and wait for her to finish cleaning up. When she's done she sits beside me and starts giving me a shoulder massage, her way of pleading without using words. I sight and rub my face.
"I think we need to leave this town sooner than anticipated" Her hands stop moving
"Why? I thought you said you liked it here?" I turn around to face her and take her hands in mine
"On my way back from the supermarket I crossed path with.... three wolves" She stops breathing for few second, her eyes wide with surprise and a hint of fear
"Wild wolves?" her voice was pleading for a yes
"We wouldn't be having this conversation if they were wild ones", I take a deep breath and urge her to do the same, "they looked like they were just passing by but I think they felt your presence somehow because they started sniffing the car, thankfully the rain made it hard for them to have anything concrete, they walked away after that, " I pause studying her now pale face "But we shouldn't stay around and wait for them to come back", another deep breath, "We will stay inside and start packing during the week-end then we leave Monday morning" Her cheeks are tear-stained now and all I can do is hug her tightly in a futile effort to make her feel safe.
"Shhh, I already have an idea where to go, I'm halfway through securing a place there, we have to get there safely, It's a long drive but we'll make it, like usual" I kiss her head and she calms down.
"Where to?" she says between her sobs
"...Northwood"
"What? No!!!" She stands up "That's part of the Northmoon pack territory, Do you know what they do to trespassers? They will kill me the moment I step in" she states in pure horror and I understand her concern.
"Eliane, that's the best option right now, pack territory means that no rogue can get in freely, besides it's a human town too and you have me as your guardian, as long as we stick together no one can harm you there, unless you have a better solution. Either way, we need to leave as soon as possible"
She stays silent for a couple of minutes trying to find an alternative way but comes with nothing. I pull her back in my arms and try to calm her down. I have my doubts too about this plan but as I said those wolves sensed her presence in this town, Whoever they are, they will come back for her. She doesn't say anything else,I know she has no special attachment for this town but moving around as frequently as we do it, can take a troll on anyone and with this new threat, I can only imagine how scared she is right now.
I slowly lulled her to sleep like I used to do when she was younger. We spent that night on the couch, her, steering and crying in her sleep, and me, lost in a million thoughts. This downpour was our temporary protection but we needed a long-lasting one and as crazy as it sounds, taking refuge in a pack land was the safest solution for a lone she-wolf and her human guardian.
Eliane POVThe sound of the pouring rain and the loud thunder were nothing compared to my pounding heart. I was still laying on the couch trying to make sense of what happened last night, I still can't believe it.Maya was sitting on the kitchen stool talking on the phone with our landlord informing him about our abrupt departure. She had the same phone conversation with her boss early this morning, she told him about some family emergency and he didn't complain about her quitting, guess he's glad to get rid of her. She had that kind of effect on people sometimes, intimidating and scary but I learned with time that she's more than that.I finally gather my strength to stand up and walk to the bathroom, took a quick shower and brushed my teeth without looking once at th
Maya POVI put the last two bags in the back seats then closed the door and leaned on it. I can't get the sight of Eliane sitting in the empty apartment lost in her thoughts out of my mind. I close my eyes and take deep breathes to calm myself, I need to be strong for this. After few minutes I get inside the coffee shop and walk to the counter. I order our smoothies then pull out my phone to check my emails, half way through it I felt eyes on me but I didn't give it much importance until I felt a presence behind me. I turn around abruptly to be greeted by a big buff guy in his mid twenties, blond messy hair and green eyes, his clothes were kind of ragged. He was standing too close to me so I took a step back without breaking eye contact, something about him and the way he was staring at me gave me goosebumps.
Eliane POVI don't know how we slept through the night but somehow we did, it felt as if the wolves observing the house were guarding us instead. Maya was up first and headed for a long shower so I went to my room. My room is so amazing, way bigger than my old one and even bigger than Maya's but she didn't mind, actually, she insisted that I take it since my in-suite bathroom had a bathtub and she knew how much I love taking baths.I was already thinking about redecorating the plain gray walls, painting them in pink or purple or just picking a nice themed wallpaper, I had so many ideas running through my head that I started feeling intoxicated.I went rummaging through my bags for a clean outfit then took all my dirty clothes collected through our road trip and put the
Maya POVSince the moment we stepped out of the car, Eliane was as tense as a stick. She was holding my hand the whole time. I could tell when we passed a pack member from the way she squeezed my hand. When we got inside the dinner, It was obvious from the way she looked at the young couple that she longed for her own kind. When they left, I could see her pain. She tried to act strong and I let her be.It got worst when we walked inside the supermarket, most of the customers kept glancing at her from afar. They were mostly men, different ages, but It was obvious that they were all here observing us. Thankfully I could easily distract her from all the tension. All I had to do was talk about things I wanted to eat and she would get lost in all the ingredients she needed for the recipe. Or my favorite trick, putting random
Eliane POVSleeping early yesterday was for the best, I woke up in a good mood and full of energy. The fact that we are having dinner with the two top families of the Northmoon pack made me feel excited. After breakfast, I started making the brownies while Maya went up to finish unpacking her boxes. I decided to make some mini egg rolls too since the Alpha and Beta seemed to prefer salty treats.Lunchtime came very fast, I didn't notice since I was busy organizing my cooking stencils and the rest of the groceries shopping from yesterday while Maya did the laundry. We decided to make omelets with onions, mushroom and extra cheese. Maya wanted to take me shopping for a new outfit and I had a hard time convincing her that I already have more than enough. Well since I don't go out that much all my clothes are still brand ne
Maya POVRain was a real gentleman, that's a fact. From the moment he picked us up, he made sure to make us feel comfortable and ease our nerves. He even managed to make Eliane giggle a couple of times. But my favorite moment was when he smacked his son's head. I know it's mean but I really enjoyed. The Luna on the other hand was the type of person I usually try to avoid. She was the over-friendly type, the kind to wear a smile all the time and her daughter was a mini version of her. She kept talking the whole dinner about herself, her pack, her mate and her children while the Alpha nodded at every word she said.I checked on Eliane from time to time, the kids were trying hard to get her to participate in their conversations but she kept her responses to the minimum. I
Eliane POVThanks to the food Beta Rain gave us, I could concentrate on my studies during the weekend without worrying about Maya dying of hunger or junk food. But truth to be told, I really missed cooking but I couldn't just waste good ingredients just to have fun.Maya slept the days away, she seemed a bit tired. I suppose all the stress we went through is finally catching up to her. She even canceled her job interview, she said she wanted to take it easy for a while. She would wake up to eat then go back to sleep.Somehow, Alex's face and his beautiful smile kept popping in my head at random moments. My mind kept rewinding our conversations, I still can't believe he called me beautiful. And the way he apologized on one knee was so romantic, he was like the male lead
Maya POVI woke up startled by my own alarm, it took me few seconds to remember why I've set it up in the first place. Yeah right, the GED tests, we have a long day today. Eliane was already up, I could hear her rummaging through the kitchen downstairs. After few minutes of staring into nothing, I dragged my feet to the bathroom to get prepared. After doing my business, I washed my hands and face with the grapefruit soap I bought yesterday then brushed my teeth. I unwrapped the towel on my head and examined my hair. Last night, I used my new hair products and I can say that I'm quite satisfied with the results.I went back to my room to dress up, I opted for a blue floral sleeved maxi dress with tan belt to wear with my new cardigan and boots. When I was done, I grabbe
Maya's POV"I. HATE. YOU" I yelled with all the contempt I could muster. But still, it wasn't as hard as I intended it to be. It's kind of difficult to sound angry and hateful when I'm panting and wheezing."No, you don't! You hate the fact that neither your puppy nor stinky eyes work on me. I kinda get it now why Luca wanted me to be the one in charge of your training!" Rain laughed hard at my messy state. He was right! What I hated was the fact that I couldn't make him quit or go easy on me.After waking up, I had to go through physiotherapy for six months. And after that, Luca decided that I needed some basic training. At first, he tried to train me personally. And since I hate it, I made his life miserable. I would throw tantrums, sulk and even cry when he was pers
Eliane POV"Are you kidding me!!" Uncle Luca hissed the moment his eyes fell on uncle Rain. The latter was grinning from one ear to the other. He was enjoying the reaction of our host."Rain!! I swear..""Guys!!" I whisper yelled, gaining their attention. I glared at both of them before nodding at the stroller by my side. Uncle Luca's eyes softened immediately. He bends down, forgetting all about the oversized kid behind me."Hello there, welcome to my home." He gestured with his arms to all the area around him. The kids looked at him with awe."Thanks!" Uncle Rain responded as he grabbed our bags from the boat."Ra
Maya's POVI watched the flames dance mystically to the rhythm of the gentle breeze. The clear sky was beautifully decorated with millions of sparkling stars. The sound of the ocean's waves was soothing, making me want to dip my feet in the cold water. But I held on to the urge for later. I didn't want to disturb the sleeping beast. My fingers resumed scratching behind his ears, making him purr. I smiled, looking down on the massive Lycan. He laid down on the ground with his head on my lap and his arms wrapped around me. Luca's Lycan was completely different from his Human counterpart. Just like a child, he was always acting spoiled and willful. He would do anything to have my attention. The first time we ever met, he gifted me with a lot of different kinds of prey. I
Luca's POV"NO!! Over my dead body!!" I growled at his blatant disobedience. It was so hard not to smack some sense into him right now. The pup was more stubborn and annoying than his father."Did I ask for your permission, trainee Black?" He gulped but kept his firm stance while the rest of his teammates took a step back, quivering. This kind of strength and determination was the main reason I was a bit lenient with Rain back in the day. And now, it's like history repeating itself."She's my mate!! You do need my permission!.... Sir" He tried to sound firm, but his voice was slightly shaking."Not if I have hers," I tried to sound as arrogant as possible. His eyes moved toward Eliane, who avoided his gaze with a guil
"How did you figured it out?" I asked Alexia who had her teary eyes on her agitated mate. Alex was next to him, saying something we couldn't hear. Uncle Luca and uncle Rain were both talking animatedly on their phones."Maya's email account was hacked just once, probably to get one specific information. Meaning that they had already an idea about her whereabouts." She turned to me with a sad look in her eyes. "Paola....... she's a good kid but she's too spoiled and self-centered to see the bigger picture. She asked me several times about the gala, the venue, and other details. I knew her interest was a bit weird but I brushed it as simple curiosity." She held my hands, letting go of her tears. "I'm so sorry, I'm as guilty as her.""Alexia, no! It's not your fault! You couldn't know and besides It wasn't even a secret." I squeezed her ha
Maya POVSLAPI jolted up, feeling a hot sting on my left cheek. I tried to touch it to ease the growing pain but I couldn't move. I tried again before realizing that my hands were tied. I blinked a couple of times before trying one more time to free myself. And this time I realized that my feet were tied too. I was painfully tied with leather straps to the cursed dental chair."Did you enjoy your little nap?" Blondi stood in front of me with an insidious grin. I blinked again still feeling confused. "I would've loved to let you rest more but you know what? Now I have a curfew and guards checking on me every other hour. All. thanks. to. you!!!" SLAP. The second slap was all it took to remind me of my actual situation.
Alex's POVI watched Eliane walk confidently inside the ladies' room followed by my sister. Since the day Maya went missing, I discovered a completely different side of my mate. The cute cry baby I came to know the last few weeks was long gone. In her place stood a stronger and more confident girl. She didn't let her emotions take over and sometimes, she was even the one calming the rest of us. It was obvious how devastated she was by the loss of Maya and I could see that she was feeling guilty too. But she kept it under control, turning into a very practical girl, looking for leads and clues.I was not the only one who was impressed by this new side of hers. Everyone was fascinated too, especially the head enforcer. He was also relieved by the fact that he didn't have to comfort her in addition to looking for his mate.
Maya's POVI don't know how to describe my state of mind right now. I can even say that I'm kind of confused by the twirls of various emotions and thoughts running wildly inside my head. On one hand, I was scared to death. After all, I'm still locked inside a car in the middle of nowhere with three supernatural dangerous men. They were leading me to my doom and I had no way to defend myself. I was on the road trip to my painful death. On the other hand, I could barely hide my grin. I actually wanted to laugh and point my finger at them. My three kidnappers were arguing by the side of the road over the newfound piece of information. From the first time since the time they dragged me away, they were no longer confident or in control. They were freaked out and alarmed as they should be. I was no longer the easy prey they t
Eliane's POV"Please don't worry about it, I'll let you know as soon as we have anything new." I lost count of the number of times I said this line. This is what I kept telling him every time he calls to check on me but it's clearly not working."Eliane, are you sure? It doesn't seem right to me. Someone made this whole charade just to get her. I still think we should involve the police." He stressed again. I can understand his insistence on the matter, but this is not something the police can help with. How am I even supposed to report the case? Hello, my human guardian was kidnapped by three rogues? or I suspect one of the werewolves around us to be the mastermind? I shook my head, chasing away the last thought."Uncle Eric,L.L.Sis leading the in
