Divorce Papers

"Sign this!" pleaded Sebastien, who handed me a document.

"Divorce papers?" I asked after reading the paper I had to sign.

Sebastien Jones, the man who married me a year ago, looked at me indifferently as he urged me to sign the divorce papers, however, I didn't know what the reason for our divorce was as I thought we had been fine. As a wife, I did everything to please Sebastien.

When Sebastien said that he wanted a wife who didn't work, I immediately resigned from my job as a marketing manager. I served as a full-time housewife. Living with Sebastien's mother and younger sister, I had to take care of their needs, from cooking to washing their clothes. And I'm still doing well without complaining at all today.

"Why? Aren't we moving to New York tomorrow?"

"Huh? Do you think I'm going to New York with a village girl like you? I'm going to New York and start a business there. I'm going to hang out with the upper-class people. I'd be embarrassed to take a woman like you with me."

"I thought you loved me. If you love me, you should accept me for who I am."

Sebastien laughed mockingly. "Love? You stupid woman! I admit you're pretty and you entertain me enough in bed, but how could I fall in love with you. You're just a poor, useless orphan girl. I've had enough of you and it's time to return you to your despicable place."

"So, you didn't love me all this time?"

"No, I never loved you a bit. So, quickly sign the divorce papers and leave my house!"

My hands were shaking and I couldn't hold back my tears as I reached for a pen and wrote my signature on the divorce papers. For a year, I lived under the illusion that Sebastien loved me. I devoted myself to Sebastien and his family, doing whatever they told me to do. I even had a miscarriage three months ago because I was exhausted from organizing Sebastien's mother's birthday banquet. I did all that because I love Sebastien and I believe that love requires sacrifice. But this is what I got.

"Darling!"

I turned my head towards the door of the room after hearing a female voice. There stood a woman wearing a gold sequined dress with a low cleavage so that part of her breast poked out. She was Jennifer, a beautiful model who was Sebastien's ex-girlfriend.

Jennifer walked past me, and stopped beside Sebastien. "What took you so long, darling? The guests have arrived," she said as she gently rubbed Sebastien's arm.

Sebastien, who was staring at Jennifer, put one hand on his cheek. "I need time to get this hag to sign our divorce papers."

Jennifer's gaze shifted to me. "Have you signed them yet? A woman like you doesn't belong with Sebastien, so stop dreaming!"

"Calm down, darling, he's already signed them. She's not my wife anymore and you're already the only woman in my life," Sebastien said.

Jennifer smiled as she rested her head on Sebastien's shoulder. "Good then, let's go downstairs because the guests are waiting for us."

This time Sebastien looked at me, but there was no gentle face and sweet smile like the one given to Jennifer, but rather a look of disgust that seemed to stare at me like a very disturbing object. "Pack your things and get out of my house!" he ordered.

I bit my inner lip hard to divert some of my hurt to the two people who looked intimate in front of me, without considering my feelings at all.

"You're going to regret treating me like this, Sebastien Jones," I said after failing to suppress my inner turmoil.

Instantly Sebastien and Jennifer laughed at me at which point it became clear that they were underestimating me.

"Why would I regret leaving you, when I have Jennifer Logan by my side? You're just trash compared to Jennifer."

Jennifer grabbed Sebastien's arm, flaunting a more intimate affection for me. "Even if you covered yourself in diamonds, you wouldn't be on my level."

I was too stupid not to understand the meaning of Sebastien's changed demeanor in the past few months. I was too stupid to misinterpret love. I wondered if maybe the female voice I heard on Sebastien's phone was Jennifer. While I was lying in pain from the miscarriage, they were having fun behind my back.

"What are you standing here for again? Didn't you hear what Sebastien said? Hurry up and pack your things and get out of this house! Don't let the guests downstairs see you because you'll only embarrass Sebastien." Jennifer said haughtily as if she wanted to show herself as the new Mrs. Jones.

Sebastien put his hands on Jennifer's waist. "Never mind, dear. We should greet our guests downstairs."

Sebastien's hand that wasn't held by Jennifer pointed a forefinger at me and one eyebrow raised as he looked at me with a haughty face. "Look, there's not a single thing you can take out of this house because it's all mine. In addition to the divorce papers, you have also signed an agreement that you will not demand any property in our divorce proceedings."
