A week. That was what Easton Grant gave to me to think about his proposal.
Why did he want to marry me? He was older than my father and to my knowledge, has been divorced twice. He has been unmarried since fourteen years, why the sudden change? I told my Grand mother about the offer and she insisted the ball was in my court, she also added that such power did not come without sacrifices. Was I really going to do this just to avenge my old self? . . . I was relaxing by the pool when a convoy of exotic cars arrived in my father’s compound. I took off my sun shades to see properly who the visitor was. Gabriel Damasco. “How dare you, Imelda!?” He growled as soon as he was out of his car and walked angrily to me. He was in one of his expensive Prada business suits—the devil wears Prada and Gabriel Damasco was a handsome Devil at that. “I assume you have received the papers from Hernandez.” I said, casually as I got out of the pool. I was wearing a red bikini that revealed the nice work of my doctor and my soon to be ex husband ran his hungry eyes all over my body—something he will never have again. “You have a lot of nerves sending me some stupid divorce papers!” He spat. “And you have a lot of nerves coming into my father’s house to yell at me!” “Shut up!” He thundered and I couldn’t help but jerk from shock. Gabriel was a dominant man by nature and it was hard to stand toe to toe with him. “Now go inside and pack up whatever you need, you’re coming home with me!” “No! Never!” I snapped at him. “I don’t care what you want Imelda! No woman will divorce I, Gabriel Damasco especially not a little brat like you!” “Leave my grand daughter alone, Damasco.” I heard my Grandmother say from behind and I was relieved to have backup. Gabriel was a force to be reckoned with but so was my Grandmother. “Juliana.” He greeted with a curt nod. “What is this shenanigans about?” My Grandmother asked. “My wife has been missing for two years and I suspect she planned her own abduction only for her to come back and serve me divorce papers!” “Then I hope you are here with the papers properly signed.” My Grandmother told him with a cold stare. “I am her husband by law and I reject this divorce. She’s coming home with me!” He said, defiantly to my Grandmother. “You seem to forget who you’re talking to, Damasco .” She scoffed. “I’m giving you twenty four hours to sign the papers or you’ll force me out of retirement and trust me, everything you’ve labored for will be burnt to the ground.” The subtle fear in Gabriel’s eyes was the highlight of this back and forth. He was not a man easily scared but my Grandmother was no ordinary woman. “You will regret this.” He gritted to me and smirked at my Grandmother before leaving. “Don’t ever be frightened by a man who picks on a woman, do you understand me!?” My Grandmother scolded me. “Yes Grandma.” I nodded, still shaken from Gabriel’s visit. . . . It wasn’t up to twenty four hours before Hernandez called me to tell me Gabriel had finally signed the papers. I was supposed to feel free, happy and fulfilled but instead, I felt heartbroken. Cutting ties with a man I’ve always loved and endured so much for was hurtful and I wished it didn’t have to be this way. I wished Gabriel had loved me and I was happy in his home, but, none of these was reality. . . . I received a two million dollars customized dress from Easton Grant to attend a business gala with him. I still haven’t given him a reply and it was four days since he made the proposal. The gala had a larger crowd than I had expected, I recognized most rich and famous people—mostly business related. I felt like a princess in the dress Easton had sent me, it spoke of luxury and was easily the best dress in the room. “You’re a beauty to behold, Imelda.” Easton said, looking marveled by me. It felt good being praised, something my old self was starved of. I was doing this for her, she deserved a better life. “Thank you, I love this dress.” I told him, blushing. “What about my offer?” He asked, refusing a drink offer from a waiter. “Um..” I stalled, looking around and suddenly I caught sight of Gabriel approaching with a beautiful tall blonde lady in a black exquisite dress, they were walking hand in hand and gave the picture of a powerful couple. Who was the lady!? A new fling? I tried to pipe down the jealousy rising within me. “What a sight! Easton Grant and my recently divorced wife.” He said with a smug smile . “Damasco.” Easton greeted and the men made a tight handshake while I and the blonde lady sized up each other. “Didn’t know you can still attend galas like this. You must be getting too old for this.” Gabriel said in a mocking tone. Evil bastard. “Well, I am Easton Grant and my influence is immortal, lesser men like you might become too invalid in the future to attend galas like this.” Easton told Gabriel and the stupid smug on his face vanished. Good comeback! “Who is the lady? Another fling?” I asked, eyeing his plus one. “Oh no dear ex wife but don’t worry, you’ll find out soon enough.” He told me and then bowed mockingly to Easton before leaving with the lady. “You still love him.” Easton said to me and I felt called out. “I’ll get over him.” I muttered, hoping I eventually would. At the end of the gala while we feasted, the host made a clink on his champagne and stated there was to be an announcement. Soon, Gabriel stood up with the lady he brought and flashed me a smirk before saying; “I wish to announce my engagement to the love of my life, Jennifer Hilton, daughter of Chris Hilton.” And then there was a round of applause. The pain from all the surgeries I went through was nothing compared to the pain I felt deeply in my chest on hearing Gabriel’s engagement announcement. This was the height of it. A deliberate public disgrace! “I accept.” I gritted. “What?” Easton asked, leaning towards me. “I accept your proposal.” I told him and his eyes glowed with happiness. “Welcome to power, my dear.” He told me and I smirked, the urge to destroy my ex husband stronger than ever.My wedding was in a week and was definitely going to be the wedding of the decade! Imelda Del Monte weds Easton Grant.A match made in power.I was picking out a few dresses from a high class designer when I met Gabriel’s younger sister, Janet Damasco entering.“Imelda.”She called, walking towards me. She was pregnant with her third child and despite her beauty and elegance, she was in an abusive arranged marriage.Even if Gabriel had made me feel unworthy of love, he never for once hit me.“Janet.”I called too, straightening to my full height and she took a good look at me.My mind flooded with all the insult and disdain her and her mother showed me while I was still married to Gabriel.“When Gabriel told me of your new self I didn’t dare believe it would be this good.”She scoffed, trying to get on my nerves like she always did.“Yes, unlike that failed boob job your doctor did on you.”I told her with an evil smile.“I hear you’re getting married to an old man, is th
My wedding was as wonderful and luxurious as I wanted, I wasn’t as happy as I was on my first wedding but it was for a greater reason. I was marrying for something tangible not something as useless and painful as unrequited love. Easton and I were greeting our guests and thanking them for coming when I saw Gabriel coming through the small distinguished crowd. My god, he was finely dressed in a dark suit, tall and divine, his black hair was slicked backwards and his jaw freshly shaved, his blue eyes were bluer than ever and there was no man more handsome than he was at that moment. “If it isn’t the bride and groom.” He said to I and my new husband. “What are you doing here?” I snarled, agitated by his presence. “I invited him. We can all still be friends.” Easton said and I saw no sense in that. I wasn’t comfortable with my ex husband at my wedding! “If I may present my gift to the bride.” Gabriel said with a smile and presented to me a small gold box.
I could hardly breathe with how fast my heart was beating in my chest as I stepped on the porch of my new husband. I just cheated. I just cheated on my new husband! What if he knew? This could sabotage my whole plan. Was I really going to let my stupid feelings for Gabriel ruin all my plans? Never!“Imelda.”Easton called as soon as I entered the living room where he sat waiting for me with his phone in his hand. He has been calling.“I uh, went out to see a friend.”I lied, smiling and trying not to give anything away.“And you couldn’t pick up your call?” He asked me as he stood up on his feet. “Why didn’t you tell me, then? If it was just a friend? Why did you have to sneak out?”With each question he asked, I felt like I would have a heart attack.“My phone was on silent and I didn’t want to disturb you. You were already asleep.”I explained to him. He scoffed.“Imelda.”He called and I straightened up in my position. I needed to be calm.“This might be a contract ma
Easton said nothing throughout the ride home and even when got home, he was still quiet. I could tell he was upset, he must be suspicious and jealous about Gabriel and I. I needed to talk to him about it. I needed him to understand I would never betray him… again. “Easton?” I called as we ate dinner in silence. He looked at me. “I would never betray you.” I told him. “How can you promise that? You’re still in love with Damasco, even a blind man can tell.” He said, bitterly. “It doesn’t mean I’ll go back to him. He hurt me.” I said. “If hurt was enough reason to stop loving someone, the world would be filed with hate.” He told me and then continued eating. I had no comeback to that. I stared at myself in the mirror as I did my nightly skin care routine. I had the face and body I always wanted but my heart was heavy. I should be happy, I should be fulfilled but I wasn’t and it felt so frustrating. I needed to get over my feelings for my ex husb
Gabriel’s mother, Lydia Damasco, was a lot like my grandmother when it came to business strategies but at heart, they were as different as day and night.I remembered the day she called me a troll and unfit for her son, in fact, she had even brought home another woman for her son to marry. It was a horrible day for me, being ridiculed in that manner. Now, she was requesting for my presence in her home, initially, I didn’t want to go but after Gabriel pleaded with me, I decided to use this as an opportunity to redeem my worth.I dressed up for the dinner in an exotic vintage green dress worth millions of dollars, my make up was light and spot on and my hair curly and lush.I drove out in one of Easton’s Exotic cars and mentally rehearsed for the dinner with my ex husband and mother-in-law.“Thank you for coming, sweetheart.”Gabriel tried to kiss me but I dodged it.“I don’t want to give your mother any impression that we still have something so please respect that.”I told him,
I stood behind Gabriel, conflicted on if I should just hurry off in shame or find out what happened to Janet. She just caught me kissing her brother, my ex husband but the bruises on her face made that less relevant at the moment.“What the fuck happened to you?”Gabriel finally asked his sister in a dangerous tone.“Nothing.”She muttered, looking away.“You better start telling me truth.”He said, taking two steps to her.“He hit me again.”She stuttered, tearfully. Her abusive husband, Alex did this to her!No more words were said, he stormed away to his car and sped off before either of us could stop him.“What are you doing here?”She asked, glaring at me.“Don’t you think we should follow him?”I asked, clearly avoiding the question “I’m not going back. I’m tired of going back.”She muttered, downcast.“You should get inside then, I’ll just…”“He’s going to fight Alex, please help me make sure he’s okay.”She told me as I turned to leave.“I will.”I nodded
I was wide awake when Easton came knocking on my door by morning. I didn’t want to answer, considering he hit me last night, but the persistent knocks were getting into my already aching head, so, I opened the door and his eyes softened at the immediate sight of me.“Your beautiful face.”He muttered, trying to touch my face but I moved back. There was a purple mark on my left cheek.“What do you want?”I asked, icily.“I’m sorry for hitting you last night, please my love, forgive me.”He pleaded, coming into the room.I stayed behind the door, watching him look around. Since we got married, he has never been in here so his presence was a bit strange.“I want to be alone, Easton.”I told him in a harsh tone.“You have to cut me some slacks here, I don’t judge your past, I married you and merged our companies, I helped you get away from that fool and I agreed to your non sexual marriage terms so I have all the rights to be fucking pissed if you keep seeing your ex husband!”
Getting an invite for Janet’s baby shower was unexpected, I wasn’t someone she could call a friend as we were never close even as sister in laws. She was in a difficult time and she needed all the love and support she could get from me even after all she did to me while I was still married to her brother. I guess it was time for a clean slate.“Oh my God, Imelda, thank you for coming.”Janet said, happily as soon as she saw me coming into the guest lounge with gifts.“Thank you for inviting me.”I smiled, hugging her.“You can keep the gifts over there, there’s cocktails and cupcakes if you’d like.”She told me. It was strange seeing her nice to me but refreshing, like a fresh start.“Thank you.”I said to her. There were a few ladies present too, none were familiar. There were also gifts and the whole place decorated in a pink flowery theme.“It’s a girl?”I asked her.“Yes.”She replied, happy. She had two boys already so she must be excited to have a baby girl.“And
My grandmother was buried alongside my parents’ grave. It was so hard seeing all three tombstones, It was like everyone I knew was gone. I felt alone in the world because I was alone and it was pretty terrifying.“You’re not alone.”A voice said behind me.I turned around and there was Gabriel in all black standing with an umbrella above his head. It was raining and I didn’t care because I was crying so much.“They’re all gone.”I sobbed as he walked to me and shielded me from the rain.“I’m here.”He whispered. We stood in silence, watching the tombstones in the rain for a while. Life was so unpredictable. He led me back to his car and drove us to a nearby coffee shop.“How do you feel about a trip?”Gabriel suddenly asked as we carefully sipped our cups of hot coffee.“I don’t know, I haven’t thought about that.”I replied.“Janet’s planning to travel for a few weeks. She needs time for herself and the baby, I think you should go with her. The baby would be lovely to b
My grandmother was the only mother figure in my life, she was the only person that truly loved my old self and my new one, she stood up for me when no one else did. She was all I really had in the world and my greatest fear was losing her. “Grandmother please be strong for me.” I sobbed, holding her stiff soft hands. The doctor said she might recover in a couple of days but what if she didn’t? “She’ll be fine, love.” Gabriel was beside me, holding me in his arms. He knew how much I loved my grandmother. I escorted Gabriel to the gates, I wasn’t returning to my marital home that night, I already called Easton and told him what happened and I didn’t even bother asking for his permission to stay with my sick grandmother before I ended the call. He was my husband and not the boss of me. “You know, I could stay.” Gabriel said as we stood by his car. “No, you have to go home. Janet will be waiting.” I didn’t want him staying over because of me and missing his
