CHAPTER 6 “Cat got your tongue?” Rafael asked with a smirk that infuriated June. She gritted her teeth, fighting the urge to stomp her feet. “Liar,” she ended up speaking after what felt like an hour. “Do you think I am a fool? Rafael Ambrose?” She scoffed. “As if!” Rafael slid his hands into his pockets and gave her a blank look. In that moment, he looked a lot like the little prince that stood beside her. They looked like they were cut from the same material. Except her little baby was a lot more beautiful and bearable. “If you are Rafael Ambrose, then I am the president!” she added when he didn’t say a word. “I will forgive you this once for looking down on me and let you go with a strict warning.” She wrapped her arms around her chest. “The next time you put this child’s life in danger by refusing to supervise him properly, I will find you and make sure you spend your night in a police cell!” she roared with furious eyes. Rafael was stunned at the audacity of the woman stan
"Are you okay, auntie?" Little Luis said when he watched the blood drain from June's face. "Are you hurting somewhere?" June blinked, unable to shake off the dread that she felt upon seeing the news of the dead men. Something within her told her it was not by accident that they had been killed just after attacking her. What really happened to them?Rafael who silently watched her soon grew uncomfortable and impatient. His phone was beeping with a lot of work mails he needed to attend to and his child was insisting on remaining here with the strange woman. "Are you going to keep us all waiting?" He suddenly asked, his reservations clear in his tone."I don't want to stay in the hospital." She muttered, her tone was without emotion and it was clear her mind was engaged. Noticing her absent-mindedness, Rafael felt all the more upset. "Do you have someone who can take care of you in your house?" She shook her head no. Her eyes were fixated on the TV screen. Now Rafael felt like he w
Inside the Rivera Household.Mrs. Evelyn Rivera stood at the entrance of her house on a sunny afternoon with a smile on her face. She was expecting her guests any moment now.Her daughter, April, had informed her of her future husband’s coming with his family. Everything had been set to host the esteemed guests, and all that was left was for them to make an appearance. When a horn blared outside the gates and she saw the fleet of three cars drive into the compound, she was the happiest woman alive. With June permanently gone, everything was finally falling into place.“Mother!” April’s excited voice made her smile grow wider.April stepped out of the car and broke into a mini-sprint, engulfing her mother in a sweet hug.“Oh, goodness! Easy, my child. You are pregnant! You should be more careful so you don’t hurt yourself,” Mrs. Evelyn Rivera nagged as she embraced her daughter.Ethan and his mother, Olivia Lontoc, also stepped out of the vehicles with smiles on their faces and some se
“Oh, Ethan. I know you have a lot on your plate. The last thing you need is another responsibility. Since you already divorced her, you should be more intent on your new woman, who is now with your child,” Mrs. Rivera stated with a mild smile. “I will handle things as I have always done.”“Don’t worry, Mother. I will be more present at work to alleviate the stress from the business,” April said, hoping to put the matter to rest. She wanted her future husband the farthest from June and her grubby, slutful ways.Especially now that her body would be undergoing a big change in the future. She didn’t trust Ethan when it came to things behind skirts.Thankfully, her soon-to-be mother-in-law spoke. “That’s settled then. I think we should go on and talk about more important matters,” she said with a wave of her hand.Mrs. Rivera swallowed her words and nodded. She had hoped to verify if Ethan still held a semblance of emotion for her older daughter, but she still wasn’t clear on the matter.
June stood in front of her hospital room door, contemplating the excuse to give the men stationed outside her room.It had been two days since she woke up, and she felt a lot better than before. Enough so that she wanted to leave the hospital and get on with her life. However, the doctors didn’t agree with her and felt the need to keep her until the three-day mark, which prompted her decision to leave without their knowledge. The only thing standing between her and that decision to walk out of the hospital was the human barriers standing in front of her door. One would think she was an important personality with the details that never left her door, attending to her as if she were some sort of money god.Although the treatment made her feel important, she had other things to get back to. She needed to get started on her life and pay her mother a visit.Armed with a plan, June opened the door, and the men turned to her with expectant looks. Prepared for their prying eyes, she cleared h
“What do you mean she isn’t there? You were supposed to watch her!” Rafael barked into his phone, feeling a bout of headache hit him at the information passed to him.“I am sorry, sir! She outsmarted us and got away. We are scouring the area in search of her—”“You mean a young and hospitalized girl managed to outsmart two full-grown men?” he asked incredulously. “Don’t bother! Go to the head office and get compensation for your work so far! You are fired. Both of you!”Rafael dropped the call before they could say a word to him. He didn’t need to hear them yap about anything. Things had been hot in his home with his son’s refusal to eat or do anything since he denied him access to seeing June Rivera. The enigmatic woman had managed to occupy his mind and that of his son’s. When he received the files on June Rivera, one glance at them, and it was clear that she had led quite an interesting life.“What happened to Auntie?” The voice of his son made him turn around in mild surprise.“Wh
Ethan and April were seated in his car, parked in front of the Lontoc home, as he tried to pacify her.“My father is throwing a fit. I just need you to stay in the penthouse for a bit while we sort things out.”April wasn’t having it. “You expect me to stay alone in the penthouse?” she fumed. “I think it’s best I get rid of this baby while it’s still at a tender age. If you are already ditching me so early in this pregnancy, then what’s to say that I won’t end up like my stupid sister?!”Ethan’s heart broke at her words. “Baby, please stop saying that. You know I love you. I can never do that to you. I just need you to exercise a bit of patience.”“Till when?! I have had enough of waiting for you, Ethan! Is it a crime for me to love you? Do you know the amount of hate and shame that I have faced because I chose to make you a father? When will you man up and take responsibility for me?”April’s voice broke as she cried, holding her stomach delicately. “I was willing to do anything to h
June stepped out of the restaurant’s kitchen, balancing a tray of orders as she headed toward a table that held a group of men.“Here you go,” she said with a moderate smile, cheeks strained from the number of smiles she had to wear in order to appear friendly. “Please enjoy your meal.”She made to leave but was stopped by an older man’s hand placed on her wrist. “Don’t be so quick to leave, beautiful. Sit.”It wasn’t the first time such a thing was happening. Three days working here, and she somehow managed to meet one of these dirtbags every single day.The worst part of it was the fact she couldn’t do anything about it. They were all bloody rich, and the last thing she needed was to get fired from a job that both fed and housed her.“I apologize, sir, but I have to go,” she spoke with a strained smile, attempting to make her way out, but he held her tightly.“It wasn’t a request, girl.” He pulled her to his side, shamelessly staring at her form. “I want you for the night. How much
The police came and April was taken away. June watched her sister struggle against the policemen who took her out of the old Rivera House."This is not over! I will be back! I always come back!" April screamed as she was thrown into a black maria filled with police officials. The detective spoke to them after she was dragged out of the scene. "The case will be charged to court immediately. Thank you for your help."June nodded, unable to speak. Evelyn watched the police vans leave the house and for the first time since she felt relief. It finally seemed like everything was coming together and her eyes glistened. Liam returned to the mother-and-daughter duo after taking a call. His brother's remains were on his private jet back to North City. The Fernando family was experiencing a power shift as Liam reinstated himself as the head of their fraction with Arnold's death. There was a lot to put in order but Liam resolved to remain in South City until further notice. Time passed and soo
Arnold was shocked when the men suddenly turned their rifles towards him with a hostile countenance. "What are you doing?!" He hissed, unable to accept the reality. "Have you lost your minds?!" Liam smiled. "In this game, I will always come up top, brother. It was only a matter of time." He tutted. "How does it feel to be betrayed by your kin?" Arnold looked around him and fear crept into his heart. These men who swore allegiance to him were suddenly his enemies. Just how much were they paid to turn their back so cruelly?!"If you think I will beg you then you are wrong!" Arnold roared. "I'd rather die than submit to you.""I never wanted your submission, brother. You know the rules. It can only be one of us. I gave you a chance and now, it's only death that awaits you.""Then kill me! What are you waiting for?!" He roared, fearlessly looking around. "Idiots! I could have given you a better life!""You are all stupid to think my brother would be a better leader!" Arnold seethed. "Y
June and her mother visited the old Rivera house the next day. It was her late father's birthday, and Evelyn packed home-cooked meals in the trunk. Liam was supposed to join them on the trip but he didn't. saying he would come by later. However, he sent some of his men to accompany them. The car stopped in front of the old Rivera house. One look at it and it was covered with dust. Evelyn felt her heart prick at the sight. She stepped out of the car and stood in front of the gates. June killed her engine and joined her mother by the gates. As she stared at the old house, She remembered how desperately she wanted to leave. June felt the old memories of how poorly she was treated at the Old Rivera House before marrying Ethan. Evelyn noticed something off at the building. She had spent most of her life in this home and trained all her staff against leaving the windows open. Her heart was uncomfortable when she saw her bedroom window dusty and open. "I need to go inside." She announc
"Why would you even do that?" Lucy was confused by June's actions. "You are not even with Liam!" "Says who?" June walked into her home office with Lucy behind her. "Who says I'm not getting together with him?" Lucy couldn't believe her ears. "I know that Mr Ambrose was wrong. He shouldn't have hidden the truth from you or gotten into that situation with Clarence. But I promise, if you take a critical look at it, he didn't mean you harm." After June's display, Rafael left the house and everyone dispersed. It was clear June wasn't in the right head space to be reasoned with. However, Evelyn remained and spoke to her daughter. After a good thirty-minute talk, June was up to date on the happenings with Rafael while she was gone. She finally understood her family but her stance remained the same. "I want a man that can trust me with anything. Not a man that would kick me aside at the slightest road bump." June declared. "I don't want to speak about this anymore, so drop it."Lucy heav
June visited Clarence in prison the next day. "What? Have you gotten back together with Rafael now that he knows it's not his child? Have you come here to gloat?" Clarence gritted as soon as she sat down. June pretended like she was not shocked by her words. "You weren't pregnant for him. Why would you pin him with a child that isn't his?" "What right do you have to sit there and judge me?!" She roared. "Don't act like you are a saint! You only got with Rafael for money!""I loved him. I loved my late sister's husband enough to kill her!" Clarence was a mad woman. "And yet, he couldn't see me. He looked at you like you were his world and what? You couldn't even wait one second to know why he was divorcing you!""You left him and hopped onto the next man's bed! Don't think I didn't see you coming out of that room, June. I saw you clearly with another man! What right do you have to come here and gloat when you were fucking another man while Rafael was struggling with cancer?!" June
The next morning came and they all sat in a round table. June, Liam, Lucy and Mrs Evelyn. Everyone wore a sober expression as June spoke. "I need to know what's going on, Liam. What happened yesterday?""You need to be more careful. No more walking around carelessly, work from home if you must. My men will be around to guard the house until I sort out this mess." Liam fired off, and it only aggravated June's anger. "I didn't ask you to order me around." She gritted. "This is my home. You don't come in here and throw orders or get thrown out. Capiche?" Liam smirked, and Lucy swooned. June wore a blank look. "What the hell happened yesterday, Liam." June asked, "Who are those people? What do they want from me? Why did I get a bomb attached to my car?"Evelyn nearly had a heart attack. "B-Bomb?""Darn it," June swore under her breath. "Can you speak already?" Liam looked around the table with raised brows. As if to say - In front of them?"You better get talking mister," June answer
June walked out of the salon with a confused look on her face. Unknown to her, she was being targeted by some gunmen who stood at a high range distance with their guns set and ready to fire. June cautiously headed to her car and got into the driving seat. She placed the bag in her camisole and started her journey. She made a U-turn, and in the next two seconds, sirens blared in the air. The sound of the sirens was so loud that she was forced to pull over. Suddenly, she felt her tyre deflate and before she could figure out the reason for the sudden flat tyre, a gunshot hit her window glass - Forcing it to explode into a million chards. June ducked as more shots fired in the air. The entire environment was noisy and people rushed into their homes, trying to take cover. June held on to the brown bag, refusing to let go no matter the cost. She felt a graze of pain in her head and her heartbeat increased to an all-time high. She remained in her car until the rain of bullets shattered
June worked with the detective overseeing April's case. They met at the house to discuss how to bring her sister to trial."Do you know of any secret fund or place she could be hiding?" The detective asked Evelyn who carefully answered after much thought. "April always had a mind of her own." She said, "No one could tell what ran through that mind or what assets she got while in power." "She kicked me to the curbs as soon as she became the CEO of Rivera and Lontoc companies. Prior to that, she only owned the properties assigned to her by me from the Rivera Shares."June shared a look with the detective. "If April is as smart as I imagined, she will have some secret stash and property somewhere," June explained. "Seeing she is on the run, it would be her first port of call."The detective agreed. "We will look into the properties acquired by her or the companies while she was CEO." He stood up, and June joined him on her feet. "I will reach out to you if we find anything more." June
The young lady's facade broke at the mention of her sister's name. "What?" She tried to recover her facial expression. "Who are you talking about? I don't know what you are talking about."It was clear that she still tried to cover for her sister despite her situation. Sheila was wrong, the lady before her would do anything to protect her. She knew that bit from the little interaction she had with her. June drew closer and whispered. "I am here to help. Sheila told me everything and she wanted to set you free."Sharon had not heard from her sister in a long time and couldn't believe it. There was no way her twin sister was in contact with anyone from the Rivera family. They ruined their lives. "I don't know what you are talking about, Miss." She was steadfast in her words. The last thing she needed was to give away their plan to the enemy, or worse, get her sister into prison for her crimes. Sharon believed that Sheila would always have a better chance of getting out of prison wit
