The Rebellious Alpha

Zoey Jenner stared at the pregnancy test she was holding.

In the small cubicle of the bathroom, she began contemplating her sex life to figure out which man had caused this.

It could have happened last month.

She had been on a business trip with Laurence Scott. She had just finished a long and hot spa session and was feeling a little drowsy when Laurence took her to bed. The next morning, both of them acted as if nothing had happened. When she opened her eyes, he was already dressed in a smart suit and was putting on his tie.

Before he left, he had told her, “Don’t forget to take a contraceptive pill.”

And it wasn’t that Zoey was forgetful. She had just been busy. Working with Laurence wasn’t easy; he was strict to the point of being brutal and never showed her any pity. Hence, by the time Zoey finally remembered that she needed to get contraceptive pills, it was already a few days too late. At the time, she thought that she wouldn’t be so unlucky, but she was wrong.

Zoey pulled herself out of her thoughts and tossed the pregnancy test into the trash impassively. Calmly, she exited the cubicle and went to the sink to wash her face with cold water. She needed to clear her mind. Raising her head to look at her reflection, she wondered what to do.

As soon as she returned to her office, the new assistant grabbed her anxiously. “Miss Jenner, someone’s here to look for trouble again.”

Zoey wasn’t surprised. “Who?”

The assistant pointed at the haughty woman outside. “It’s Ms. Sullivan again.”

Yvette Sullivan was supposedly Laurence’s ex-girlfriend. She had been dumped only two months into their relationship. She probably wasn’t going to just resign to being dumped. After the breakup, she came to his office twice to try and cause a ruckus, but each time she had been thrown out before she had a chance to even try.

Zoey rubbed her temples. She had plenty of experience with Laurence’s exes, but she felt inexplicably annoyed today. “I’ll deal with her,” she said.

Zoey walked toward Yvette, heels clicking on the floor. She felt a little sorry for the woman, and also for herself. Nothing good ever came out of falling in love with Laurence Scott. Well, if one were just in it for the money, then it wouldn’t be as bad, but no one would ever win his affection.

Laurence was always generous with his girlfriends, even after a breakup. Just like all the ones before, Zoey was the one who helped him deal with the aftermath of this relationship. He had given Yvette a large condo in the city center, priceless jewels, and a heft sum of cash.

“Ms. Sullivan, Mr. Scott is not in today. If you want to see him, please do call him.”

But Yvette Sullivan was here exactly because she had no other means of contacting Laurence. She didn’t want to let go of a fine man who controlled a whole company at a young age like Laurence. He had a bright future and was very handsome to boot. Even just sleeping with him was worth anyone’s time.

Yvette just wanted to get back together with him. She loved him and thought he loved her too. She thought that she was special, but it turned out that Laurence was just as heartless to her as he was to all his other ex-girlfriends.

“I’ll wait for him here.”

“I think you know how Mr. Scott is. He likes obedient people. You really don’t want to upset him,” Zoey said patiently. “And forgive my frankness, but you have already received enough compensation for the breakup. There’s lots of fish in the sea, why embarrass yourself for a man?”

Yvette was afraid of upsetting Laurence too. Even though he looked mild-tempered and chivalrous, he was actually a heartless man at his core. Zoey was right, it wouldn’t do her any good to upset him.

She bit her lip. “Fine, I’ll just call him myself.”

Zoey breathed a sigh of relief and told her assistant to send her downstairs. The entire department was buzzing with discussion.

“Mr. Scott’s a bit of a playboy, isn’t he?” Anne Chalmers commented as she stood beside Zoey. “I wonder what kind of woman will be able to make him settle down in the future.”
