Ashley couldn't imagine having to face another problem. She was already too tired and sick of it all. There was no way she was inviting another problem to clog her head even more.
So she endured it. Enduring the excruciating pain, as well as enduring the resentment in her heart for having to go through so many things that she never wanted to happen to her.
Trying her best to move slowly and carefully, it took Ashley almost twenty minutes alone to take off all her clothes one by one-including the rest breaks she needed to ease the pain. Then calculatingly, she seated herself on the edge of the tub deck close to the handheld shower. She stretched out her healthy hand to unscrew the device, turned it on, and adjusted it so that the water coming out of it gushed gently.
She began to wet her body except for the injured parts of her right hand and foot. Even so, she still could not prevent the water from splashing out altogether. Some of her wounds, which were still wet, stung even more from the water.
Ashley sighed repeatedly. There was something in her stomach that caused a strange tight sensation and swirled inside—like a waterspout stirring her insides. It made her confused whether to split her focus on enduring the pain first or enduring the nausea.
After finishing soaking her body and calming herself down, Ashley reached out her hand again to grab the bottle of soap on the bathroom vanity. But her hand was not long enough to grab it. She then slowly shifted her seat to get closer. Still unable to reach it, she shifted again, endured the pain, paused, then tried to reach it for the third time. She should have been able to grab the bottle with this distance if only it wasn't so centered on the table. Even so she still tried to shift her body a little more and tried to stand up while continuing to extend her hand as far as she could.
Just a little more, her fingertips could almost touch the bottle. But the pounding pain as her muscles stretched because she was wrongly resting on her injured leg, attacked her instantly with great force. It made her body jump and her fingertips accidentally nudged the bottle and other bathing utensils.
The sound of objects bumping and falling made the room filled with a loud noise that lasted for a while. As it turned out, the noise could even be heard outside the bathroom.
“Ash,” Josh called from outside while knocking on the bathroom door, “what's wrong with you? Are you okay?”
Ashley swallowed with difficulty. She was back sitting with her forehead resting on the edge of the bathroom vanity as she tried to shake off the excruciating pain. Her breathing was slightly labored and tears were welling up in the corners of her eyes.
“I'm okay,” she replied, but her voice was weak. Making Josh who was behind the door could only hear a murmur.
The man frowned, "What? What was that noise? Do you need help?"
Ashley sighed, “I'm fine,” then shouted at the top of her lungs, "It's nothing. Just go!"
But in reality, Ashley wasn't completely fine. She couldn't lie to herself that she was struggling. But as difficult as it was, what could she do? Ask Josh to help her take a shower? That seemed like the worst idea in the world. Not only did she not want to do it herself, she was also pretty sure Josh wouldn't want to provide that kind of help either.
The only solution was for Ashley to clean and wash herself very slowly and carefully. So she was still trying hard by herself not to expose the wound to water or get more painful by keeping the right side of her body still. The hardest part was getting dressed. She often accidentally bends and stretches her arms or legs too much, causing her skin to pull and sting. Plus, when the inner surface of the fabric scratched her wound, the stinging feeling that traveled up to her head made her want to faint right then and there.
With all these difficulties, Ashley finally made it through, although it took a very long time. It left her fingertips wrinkled, and her throat parched from exhaustion.
After taking a deep breath, Ashley walked out of the bathroom by clinging to the wall like she did earlier.
When she opened the door, she found Josh approaching her.
"Are you sure you're okay? You spent a long time there."
Ashley nodded. Although a bit hesitant, she felt she had no better choice than to ask Josh for a small favor, “Can you get me some water?” her voice sounded weak and polite. Ashley knew she couldn't be so casual when she was expecting favors from others.
“Of course,” Josh replied, then immediately wrapped his arms around Ashley's body to help the girl walk better.
This time, Ashley complied as she was already exhausted and probably wouldn't be able to make it halfway around the room just to get to the bed.
Josh got her a large glass of water after helping her lie down comfortably. As soon as Ashley received the glass, she gulped down the entire fresh liquid in one go until it was gone.
“Thanks,” she handed the glass back to Josh.
“Feeling better?” Josh asked as he saw Ashley let out a refreshing exhale.
“Hm-hm,” Ashley agreed. "I'll probably rest for a while while I wait for my mom to come. If you want to leave, you can go now."
Josh shook his head, “How can I leave when your mom will be here visiting.”
"It's okay. I told her you weren't home anyway. I can make a good excuse later, just in case. Go," she said with a bit of urgency this time.
"I'll leave later after your mom gets home. I have plenty of time and am in no hurry. It would be better if your mother knew I was here to accompany and take care of you. I will look bad in your mother's eyes if I am not at home while you are in this condition."
“No, no,” Ashley tried to stop him, "You don't need to delay your leaving just for that reason. There's no need. She'll be very understanding because I told her you have very important business outside. Go, it's really okay," Ashley tried to keep convincing the man to stick to his original plan to leave immediately. By being here when her mother came later, it would certainly upset the woman. Because the purpose of her mother coming to the house was to talk alone with her, without the need for anyone else's presence.
"No. It would be better if I was here."
Ashley was starting to be overrun with panic. "Then what about your girlfriend? Don't you want to go see her right away? Are you sure she'll be okay?" Ashley insisted on trying everything to get rid of the man immediately before her mother actually arrived.
"I told her I'd be a little late. And she's fine."
The girl really took it for granted? She didn't protest or insist? Really? Considering how unnatural her emotional state was—though Ashley had only glimpsed it in one moment from the scratches she received on their first meeting that hadn't even lasted for a quarter of an hour—her acceptance this time could be considered amazing.
"Really? You must have given her a really good reason," Ashley nodded, as if praising him. But in her heart, she really wanted to shake her head at Josh's misguided decision. The man had to leave right now before her mother arrived.
"Are you sure she's really okay? What if she gets mad, and—I don't want to be blamed for the damage to your relationship, okay?" Ashley kept trying to bait Josh into canceling his wish to stay home.
But he smiled at her.
"Our relationship isn't that superficial, Ash. Well, there are difficult times that make her unstable and demand more of my attention than usual, but she's not a child. I admit it was quite difficult to calm her down, but nowadays she is very understanding of both of our conditions."
"Um, that's strange. She shouldn't understand it that easily. You don't have to lie to me. You can really just leave now. I know my mom very well, so I assure you, I'll be able to control everything just fine,“ Ashley saw Josh wanted to retort but he quickly continued his sentence again, ”And you don't have to worry about your reputation, because I promise to make you look very good for my mom. We haven't agreed on what we're going to take to solve our problems yet anyway, so, for now I think it's best to cover everything up and act as normal as possible." Ashley ended her long sentence with confidence that Josh would correct his plans after this and leave immediately.
Yet again, what she received was an even wider smile from him.
Josh felt that he was very powerful right now, as he had a lot of control over both Ashley and Sharon."Calm down. Sharon must be having fun right now. She's my business anyway, you don't need to think about us. Also, as I said earlier, you don't need to bother or think about finding a deal for that matter. And yes, I'm sure you wouldn't badmouth me to your mother."Josh finished his speech with great satisfaction. From now on, to him, Ashley's threats were just empty bluster with no power. Because in the end, the girl would be able to do nothing but stay in this marriage with him. Even if Ashley was desperate to destroy Josh's reputation to his family, in the end, the one who would get into trouble would be herself, not Josh. From the articles he read in the document hidden by Ashley yesterday, it was enough to show that the rumors circulating about the relationship between Ashley and her parents were not good, it was almost one hundred percent true.It made Josh guess what steps Ash
“Does it hurt?”“It hurts...” Ashley groaned with a grimace. Her eyes were closed tightly as she couldn't bear the onslaught of pain that felt like thousands of sharp needles digging into her skin.Josh couldn't bear to look at the girl. "Should I stop? What if this medicine doesn't need to be applied? I think drinking medicine is enough to treat it from the inside?" he asked hesitantly, not really understanding medical issues like this. He even knew the order in which the topical medicines were to be applied because he had read the written instructions on the package yesterday.Meanwhile, Ashley, whose medical knowledge was also not better than the man's, did not know what to answer. As soon as the stabbing pain faded a little, she even told Josh to continue administering the medicine. "Don't. They gave it to me because I have to use it. Just apply it, but not too much, and—maybe you can do it quickly so that the pain can happen all at once? So that I don't have to hold it in for too
Ashley was sitting on the sofa in the living room when her mother came in. The spot where she was sitting had its back to the corridor that connected the rest of the room to the main entrance, so when the woman walked in all she could see was Ashley's shoulder leaning against the sofa.“Your mom came and you didn't even bother to greet her,” the woman walked over with a sharp sentence.“I'm sorry, Mom,” Ashley tried to stand up as soon as possible. But just as she was trying to lift herself up with her hands clinging to the sofa's arms to support her weight, her mother had already arrived in front of her.“What happened to you?” The woman looked at the condition of Ashley's body that was filled with wet scratches and blue bruises around her. "It’s okay. No need to stand up." Her tone of voice was still sharp, but her originally annoyed expression became a little softer. She took a place on the single sofa that was quite far away from Ashley.Meanwhile, Ashley, after hearing her mother
Ashley's scratches are indeed quite severe because they are quite numerous, spreading across her hands and legs on her right side. It is natural to make anyone who sees it cringe or even think it is disgusting. Plus imagining that after the wounds healed, the scars would probably be even more horrifying.Meanwhile, Ashley's mother, who witnessed it all, felt the need to put an end to the unpleasant attitude that Josh's mother was showing towards her daughter."It doesn't matter. Go to our family dermatologist once your body feels better. She'll help your wounds dry properly and make them heal without any marks."“Without a mark?” Josh's mother was surprised and quite curious about the statement she had just heard. How could such a large number of wounds heal without a mark? “Is that really possible?”“Of course,” Ashley's mother answered flatly but firmly, "She is a renowned expert in her work. That's why she became our family's specialized doctor. I can recommend her to you if you ar
Once they had finished eating all the lunch dishes with some small talk, Ashley's mother finally brought up Josh's departure. She wanted to set up a scenario where Josh could leave while also taking his mother out of the house. So that she could have a little time to talk about private matters that neither Josh nor his mother could hear."Why didn't you go? Ashley said that you had some very important office business.""That's right. What business is it that you have to go anyway? They should know that you're on leave, right?" Josh's mother was quite anxious due to yesterday's incident which worried her quite a bit.Josh knew his mom was worried about him acting up and going back to Sharon. But he tried to answer as nicely and calmly as possible, "It's about the project that's going to be launched next month. The office is quite busy so I had to step in. After all, they need my approval and some opinions. But I can postpone it. There's no way I'm leaving while knowing my mother-in-law
Josh drove straight to the restaurant as soon as he dropped his mother off.The evening air was sticky on his skin, but somehow his heart was beating faster. There was something about meeting Sharon today that felt different.Sharon was waiting for him inside the restaurant, sitting in the corner with sunglasses covering half her face and a wide-brimmed hat. As soon as she saw Josh arrive, she smiled broadly as she lifted her new bag onto the table, as if to show off a treasure.Josh chuckled at her behavior. He too put on a mask, sunglasses and a hat that almost completely covered his face, trying his best to remain unrecognizable, just like their previous agreement and plan—to go undercover.“Your new bag?” Josh pulled out a chair and sat across from her. “It's beautiful.”Sharon nodded coquettishly, twirling the bag around so that it was visible from all angles. "Thank you. I'm so glad I bought it," she said, her voice light but with a hint of a spoiled tone in it.“It's good that
Josh came home the next morning, his face tired but still forced a faint smile. Ashley had expected it. There was no need to explain. When the door opened and the sound of Josh's footsteps could be heard, Ashley only glanced briefly from between the kitchen doors. He was heading out, a small bag slung over his shoulder, sandals already on.“Where are you going?” asked Josh, his voice heavy as always, but this time there was a curious tone he couldn't hide.Ashley buttoned up her jacket. "To the family dermatologist. I want to start treatment for these wounds," she said with a faint smile, pointing to her still slightly bruised cheek.Josh put the car keys down on the table with a loud noise, as if accidentally venting a small annoyance. “I'll drop you off.”Ashley immediately shook her head. "You don't have to. I can do it myself. Besides, you look tired. Get some rest."“I can, really—”“No need, Josh.” Her voice sounded firmer than she would have liked. It made Josh pause for a mome
After cleaning herself, treating her wounds, and taking her medication, Ashley let out a long sigh. There was one important thing she had to do today.Ashley stared at her phone screen hesitantly for a long time. Before finally pressing the “Mom” contact and pressing the call button. She waited for the phone to connect. Her heart was beating lightly when her mother's voice came from the other side. In a low voice, almost a whisper, Ashley said, “Mom,” she said softly as she heard her mother's voice on the other end. "Today I'm going to see Dr. Kim for a consultation on the treatment of my injuries. After that... Can I stop by to see her for a while?"She didn't mention names, there was no need. Between them, it didn't take too many words to understand who she meant. A few seconds of silence passed, before her mother finally replied in a soft yet cautious tone, "Alright. I'll have them arrange access for you today."Ashley breathed a sigh of relief. There was something warm and bitter
Josh pushed his suitcase and Ashley's suitcase while she was already inside the house.Ashley had been very cold to him since their last day in Paris.Although every time he asked her what made her behave that way, she always replied with the same lines “I'm fine”, “I'm just tired”, “I'm not angry with you”, “I'm just the way I am”, “I'm not really angry, why would I be angry, I have no right to be angry”, “I'm just being normal”, “We agreed not to bother each other, so I'm more comfortable with us keeping our distance”.All the girl's words boiled down to one conclusion: she was indeed angry with Josh, she just didn't want to admit it.Whereas the previous few days they had enjoyed their days in Paris very much. There was even a moment when Josh felt that the two of them could be good friends. As the plane landed back in their hometown, Ashley could barely stop herself from screaming. Every second on the plane, he thought of only one thing: when he got home, he wouldn't pretend to be
Sharon's first night in Paris, after she arrived and met Josh, the hotel felt very different to Ashley. As expected, Josh did not return to their room that night. Instead, he stayed in Sharon's room which was located right next to theirs. Ashley lay down on her bed, but the sadness that was choking her heart prevented her from sleeping. Amidst the silence of the night, Ashley could hear quite a few noisy and disturbing sounds - laughter, small talk, and above all, the sound of Sharon who was probably enjoying her evening with Josh. Every second felt like time stood still, yet filled with anxiety.Ashley pulled the blanket closer to her body, trying to calm her mind. However, in the darkness, the loneliness and hurt continued to haunt her. It was a very hard night. Ashley thought, why did this happen to her? The two of them-Josh and Ashley-had shared beautiful moments. They had laughed together, talked about the future, and planned things. But now, Ashley felt like a stranger in Josh's
That morning, the Parisian air felt colder than usual, as if it shared Ashley's pent-up anxiety. Upon opening her eyes, she was surprised to find herself in Josh's arms, closer than ever before. Their position this time was very different-their faces were too close, almost inches apart. They stared at each other with their eyes wide open, both stunned.Josh seemed to have just realized their position. Reflexively, he pulled his body slightly, separating the distance between them. However, their gazes remained focused, as if time had slowed down. There was only an awkward silence between them. Josh, who usually looked relaxed, now looked a little uneasy. On the other hand, Ashley could only look at the man with mixed feelings-between confused, upset, and not knowing what to do."Ma-sorry," Josh stammered, finally breaking the silence. "I... didn't mean-"Ashley looked at him sharply. She could feel his irregular heartbeat, perhaps even faster than usual. "I... don't know what to say,"
Josh and Sharon spent their days in Paris full of laughter and fun.As per the list they had made long before their departure, they started exploring one tourist spot after another.Their first destination was, of course, the Louvre. They walked hand-in-hand through the iconic pyramid-shaped glass entrance, Sharon's eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.Inside the museum, they stopped for a long time in front of the Mona Lisa painting, talking quietly, joking about how small it was compared to their expectations. Josh took many photos of Sharon in front of other famous paintings. No matter that there was a ban on photography in some parts, Josh quietly stole moments - too eager to capture Sharon's contented smile.Afterwards, they walked to the Eiffel Tower. There, they took pictures at various corners of the Champ de Mars park, and then climbed to the top of the tower, getting a bird's-eye view of the entire city of Paris.Sharon hugged Josh tightly as the wind picked up, chuckling and tea
Josh sighed, his eyes closed for a moment, as if holding back a burst of frustration. He walked over to the sofa, looking at it with skepticism.“It's small and hard, Ash,” he said, his tone getting heavy. "I've been exhausted since Korea. Had to spend the night with Sharon..."Josh stopped, realizing his mistake in saying the name.Ashley's face instantly changed. The look in her eyes froze.“Yes, of course,” Ashley muttered, her voice laden with bitter sarcasm. “You're exhausted from ‘serving’ Sharon, then think I should just understand?”Josh growled in frustration. “That's not what I meant!”Ashley approached, standing just a few steps away from him, her body tensed like a bow ready to shoot.“Every time I try to feel better about all this, every time I start to think maybe we could be friends, maybe even... more, you always remind me who I am in your eyes!” she said sharply."Just a formality. Someone you married because of a contract, while your heart is elsewhere."Josh returne
Josh had finally arrived in Paris. The long, tiring flight paid off a little as he set foot on the European soil, greeted with beautiful afternoon skies, cool air, and the typical hustle and bustle of the city of love.Ashley walked beside her, pulling her small suitcase. They both looked a little clumsy-not because they were not used to being together, but because each of them was still trying to find a new rhythm in this strange relationship of theirs: a loveless marriage, but with an official status to live up to.They arrived at the luxurious five-star hotel.Josh took care of the check-in while occasionally stealing glances at Ashley who looked beautiful in a beige coat and white scarf. For some reason, there was something about her that felt different that day. More calm. More natural. They took the elevator to the highest floor.Ashley stepped in first as the door opened. "Wow..." she muttered spontaneously.Josh just smiled a little at her amazed expression.Their room was eno
Two weeks have passed since the warm but awkward meeting between Josh, Ashley, and their two moms. Many things have changed since then. The wounds on Ashley's body are slowly healing, both physically and mentally. Mrs. Kim finally declared Ashley healthy, and the news brought a wave of new plans-including the long-delayed honeymoon.Josh's mom, with her typical enthusiasm, decided to give a special gift: a honeymoon trip to Paris. Everything was organized in perfect detail, from the first-class flight to the luxurious hotel overlooking the Seine River. Ashley herself could hardly believe it was all happening so fast. But, on the other side of the city, Josh faced a more complicated dilemma. The night before departure, Josh sat in his car, staring at his phone screen that displayed Sharon's name. He took a deep breath before finally pressing the call button. When Sharon picked up, Josh could almost feel the anger simmering from the other side of the line, even before a word was spoken.
