There was a look of pain on her face. They had had this conversation a million times before but Gwen never understood her view enough to back down.

"And what do you plan to do Gwen? What is your master plan in taking the Queen?"

"I will join the army. Stop her from winning over Estril and then remove her from the throne."

Her mother gave her an incredulous look. "That does not make sense Gwendolynn, you will be killed if you are found as a traitor in the army. Think this through."

Gwen nodded. "I know, and that's why I'm planning to join the Estrillian army."

There was silence. And then her mother chuckled a bit.

"That's ridiculous. You won't be able to cross the border let alone get allowed into the army of the enemy. They would think that you are a spy or kill you on the spot. And even if that didn't happen the word would spread of someone from Paria-Drae joining the Estril army and someone from Estril could try to kill you for it."

And after her mother spoke that was the end of their conversation. Gwen went to her room after washing her hands vigorously. Her mother continued with the fish and she got lost in thought as she walked into her room. Gwen sat next to her window and looked over at the gloomy town. The window and frosted up and she drew some shapes on it. She faced the opposite direction of the castle so she could not continue to glare at it and hope that it crumbled to the ground. She was glad that it was not there and did not ruin the view she had

She went into her mother's library and looked around for books about the geography of their continent, Eubain.

Gwen continued to look through the book and take note of other things and as she was scrolling she came across information on Estril. Before the entire deal of war, she was not really interested in the country. All she knew about then was that their army was significantly smaller than theirs and so they didn't stand a chance and that they were backward and needed the rule of Paria-Drae. So basically the nonsense this country was spouting. And that they mined for gold. Which was why the greedy bitch wanted the country in the first place.

Gwen snorted at the thought and continued to flip through the pages. There was a page that had information about the army in Estril, she skimmed over it quickly but there was something that caught her eye. The address of the army base.

Joining the army was the only way she found she could help her country. One extra hand to help in the battle against evil. Because Estril, and Naudis, their northeastern neighbor, speak the same language as Paria-Drae it is easy for the three countries to communicate. Unlike the other two countries of their continent, Schneir and Marteas, who have their own. There had to be something that she could do. A way to get to Estril without being killed in the process.

Going to Naudis to get to Estril was a possibility since they also bordered the country, but the problem was that Paria-Drae had their support in case of anything. The other two countries, Schneir and Marteas were silent in their answers for support but it was obvious that they stood with Estril. The diplomatic relations between them and Paria-Drae had not always been the best.

They had not said anything about siding with either country and looked to just want to stay out of it. With Paria-Drae in the center of Eubain, every country bordered her. And so Schneir and Marteas were in danger of an attack if they said anything the Queen didn't want to hear.

Gwen sat on the floor with her gaze fixed on the address and her fingernail wedged between two teeth as and her brain trying to calculate a plan.

"Gwen,"

Surprised that she did not hear any approaching footsteps, she looked up and saw her stepfather. He gazed down at her with a warm smile.

"Come one, eat some lunch."

She got up and left the book on the floor after memorizing the page number. This was one step forward for her, she was going to join the army and get there safely. It was only a matter of time.

Estril was the lucky country of our continent who got blessed with gold. She was small but held alot of value and that was how the country was able to stay on top of things and support its people. But after some gold was found in the rivers that connected Paria-Drae and Estril, the Queen, and her usual Queenly fashion wanted to take possession of the river.

The thing is, that when the countries were being established and breaking into themselves, the people who lived in Estril got possession of the river. The Queen attempted to try and take Paria-Drae's side of the river and even made the excuse that because Estril mines for gold and is filled with it they should just give up the entire river. But she was denied any access to the river. It is illegal for any person from Paria-Drae to trespass on Estril's property without permission.

Angered the Queen came up with all these lies and excuses as to why they should be in charge of the river and be able to get some gold too. And over time, it escalated to where they are today. The Queen wanted complete control over the country. Honestly, Gwen was surprised she had not been assassinated by now. She was extremely selfish and so blatantly in the wrong here. But it seemed that her face was so thick that she saw nothing wrong with her actions.

After lunch, Gwen left the house. The rain had stopped but the air was still damp. She did not have any friends and so she always wandered around by herself. Her mother kept her mostly indoors when she was a child but as Gwen got smarter she was allowed to leave more. The towns kids would try to make friends with her but ignored them. She had a goal and did not want to have any distractions.

Although she thought about the Queen an unhealthy amount she also looked to take walks and look at the scenery. Their town, Sinope, was fairly large and so it took her a while to walk through the entire thing. There would be cars going through the streets and people selling their things on the side. School children would be playing dangerously close to the road and their mothers would be screaming after them.

At one point, Gwen found it suffocating because of all the people but she found it charming after some time and liked the constant rush of things. Their town was always awake, no matter what time it was.

Her mind wandered to Estril and their army but she fought to put those thoughts aside for a second and just focused on the present. She was so wound up that she became so stressed and anxious easily. After the conversation, she needed became a little bit more somber and needed some time to gather her thoughts.

She needed to get across the border but she did not know how. With everything going on, the border guards will be much more strict on who gets to leave or not. She did have a reason for leaving but it's a treasonous reason that could get her killed. She needed a reason to get across the border but for now, she just needed a way to get across. The rest she will figure out later.

Gwen could not go straight from Paria-Drae to Estril and so it would be best if she went to Naudis first. Although Naudis was supporting Paria-Drae, the citizens of the country definitely did not. There was so much hate for the Queen in all the other countries that it was surprising there was not an uprising of people to take her down yet.

Getting into Naudis should be easier and then from there, she should be able to get into Estril. But there was another problem with that plan. On her identification card, her birth name was Gwendolynn Aelisia. Aelisia was not an uncommon name in Paria-Drae but with the way she looked, it would obviously raise some questions.

Going to the border and requesting to leave with a name like Aelisia and a face like the Queen would definitely get her held and questioned, so she needed a name change. Temporary and quick. She needed a fake identification card. And she had an idea where to find it.

Gwen turned around as the idea settled in her head. A small smile of triumph was on her face and she clutched her clothes tighter as she walked to her new destination.

In a poorly painted two-story house just down the road from her lived Mr. Rickeys. He was a strange man in his fifties, mostly kept to himself, and gave anyone that met gazes with him goosebumps. There were numerous rumors about him. Some stating that he was a runaway criminal from another country, others saying he was an old army vet that took to living in the city by himself. Whatever the truth was, Gwen knew that he should be able to help her.

He was leaning back into his old couch and was giving Gwen a look that made her think it would be harder than she imagined. The interior of his house was how anyone would expect. Everything looked old and worn down. The grey paint on the walls was peeling off and what remained was cement and grime. There was always a draft that Gwen had to get used to because he never cleaned any of the fireplaces in his house. And there was no way she was willing to do it. Although he lives in such conditions he never complained or seemed like he was struggling. He was content with how he lives, even if it was not up the standard of other people."Why?" he asked and tapped the cigar over a tray."I want to go

Gwen sat on her bed looking out of her window. It was around midnight and she had an oil lamp burning on her nightstand. She was stuck in a problem. The problem was preventing her from doing what she needed to do. And the problem had to do with her mother. If she were to suddenly leave in the middle of the night then it would be problematic and would cause her mother great pain. But if she were to tell her mother that she was planning to leave then she would be prevented from going.Gwen did not want anything to get in her way and she would be locked in the house if she told her mother. But if she didn't tell her then it would cause her mother to be upset. She sighed as she looked out of the window. Gwen got up and tapped her fingers against the cool glass as she looked at all the lights. She could see people walking down on the street.

Once she was through the checks from the Naudis border guards she was officially in the country as a citizen. She told the guards the same story she did the others and they let her pass without any questions. Gwen felt slightly bad for lying but she knew it was for the greater good. There was a bus terminal by the border that took people to multiple areas of the country and that was where all the people were headed. There were a large number of buses andGwen looked for the one that would take her into the main town. Before she left she looked up how to get to the address that Mr.Rickeys gave her on the card. When Gwen woke up there were several people looking at her. It took her several seconds to process what was going on but when she did she shot up from her position. There were a couple of seconds of confusion before her thoughts were in order. She had left Paria-Drae and was now in Naudis in some stranger's house. There were four people looking at her. The woman she saw earlier. Two men, who looked to be in their thirties as well, and a woman who looked to be in her twenties.Gwen rubbed her face in embarrassment and offered them a small smile. "Sorry. I didn't mean to fall asleep here."She gathered up her things which got messy while she slept and made sure everything was as it should be. The four didn't say anything and just kept looking at her. Gwen felt even more shame than before

Sasha's expression died a little bit. She looked at her siblings before looking back at Gwen. Jonah looked like he was ready to pounce on her. "What is it?" her voice shook slightly. "Oh, it's nothing hard. I just need you to send letters for me." "Letters?" "You see, I'm on my way to Estril and I can't send letters from there to Paria-Drae. So I want to send them to Naudis first and then have them go home. My mother is not the biggest fan of what I am doing and she worries a lot. So I want to send letters back home to her. I'll send them here and you can mail them to Paria-Drae." "What exactly are you going to do in Estril?" Keith asked.

Once again Gwen was at the border of Naudis. There was almost no one there. She stood up in line for at most five minutes before she got to the front. To say she was nervous was an understatement. She did not hear anything about people being banned from going to Estril and hoped that they would not question her too much. Before she got to the border, she had to go and exchange most of her money for Estrillian money. Hoping that it would not be wasted. The money for Estril, Paria-Drae, and Naudis was not that far off when it came to conversions. It made no sense for the values to be different when they were so close together and had trade between each other. Gwen was sure the trade would be affected because of everything going on now but there hasn't been anything said yet.Because the border was so close to Boreon it did not take her too long to get there by bus. The sky was still dark and the air was chilly. She had some food from Sasha tucked away in her bag and she

Fort Brimburg was located near the border of Paria-Drae. That was a good thing because they were close to the action. It seemed like it was planned that way just so that civilians were away from the mess that could come in the future. It took them a couple of hours to get there and when they arrived the sun was already past the horizon and breaking into the early morning. It was like any other military camp. It had multiple buildings for the multiple divisions that made up any camp. Gwen could not see the training grounds from where she was but she assumed that it was large. She wondered how far the property stretched.Captain Marcus drove them past the barrier at the front of the camp and to the first building that was seen. There were people walking around in camouflage uniforms, looking busy. No one stopped to even look at them

  • The Perfect Traitor    Chapter 10

Gwen and the Captain walked through the camp side by side. There were a couple of glances cast at them but no one stopped to talk or stare at them. Everyone seemed to be in their own word with their own business to do. Gwen saw multitudes of cars parked outside many of the bunkers. She wondered if they were used to carry the soldiers to the front lines or if they were just cars that were used on a daily. "So where exactly is our destination?" Gwen asked as she narrowly dodged someone who was practically running with a stack of papers in their hands. Gwen would have gotten annoyed but she understood that everyone was flustered. "The training grounds." Captain Marcus said. "That should also be where the other soldiers are right at this moment. They're training more than ever. Longer hours, tougher situations."

It had been a couple of months since everything unfolded. Meredith had been in prison ever since and had no chance of getting out in her lifetime. Her mother had made a public appearance a while ago and gave a heartfelt speech about the past twenty years and how it was so drastic from everything she knew but grew to appreciate simpler things because of it. And because of that, Gwen realized that it was her mother's way of telling the people that she was not going to be the Queen. And if that was the case, then it all fell on Gwen.Even though she threatened the Queen and told her that she would take the throne and because people want her to, did not mean that Gwen actually wanted it. She expected her mother to be the Queen the people all loved and wanted. But her mother was getting older and just wanted to live a simple life with the man she loved. She did not want to suddenly be thrust into a life she gave up on for so many years and it would also be unfair to her stepfather. And so,

When it came to important matters that had anything to do with the royal family or money, the royal family would address it themselves. If it was anything else they would have people do it for them. And seeing as it is as big as getting arrested, she would definitely make a public appearance. And Gwen would use that. With Mr. Rickeys in Naudis, it was just her and Ace. They were their own support and even had weapons from the base as extra protection.“What exactly are you planning to do? Storm the castle and catch the Queen by surprise and blow off her head? Ace asked her one day when they were just waiting around for something. Anything to happen. “The number of times I have imagined doing that would surprise you. But no, I don’t think that would work. To be honest, I’m not sure what will, but I’m using this time to think up a plan.”“You should not have gone to the Queen in the first place.”Gwen gave him a pointed look. “You think I don’t know that. There was nothing more nerve-wracking than standing at the side of the road, waiting to see any sigs of her parents. They could have walked past them, or they could have gotten caught. But once she saw them coming out of the forest a little way down the road from them, her heart finally started to beat again. And without a moment’s delay, they were taken to the military base. “Since we know that the Queen is a potential threat to the lives of your parents. I will have half of the men from the castle come here to protect them. Fort Brimberg does not have as many people as it used to and so we’ll need to stretch our resources thin for now.” the General told her. “Thank you,” Gwen looked back at her parents who were talking with the Captain. In a serious situation, Puckett was not useless and could be helpful when it counted so she didn’t disagree with him following her. This was bigger than both of their problems so Gwen pushed any anger for him out of the way, focusing on what was really important. They got to Paria-Drae in record time and even faster than how they were the day before. Gwen was not sure how fast the Queen could move but she definitely did not escape the castle to walk on foot anywhere. Gwen was then forced to explain everything that happened in detail to her parents. She'd never felt so small in her life. The look the both of them were giving her while she told the story made her regret telling them. She should have just told Mr. Rickeys, made him keep an eye on them, and then ran back to Estril where she would have been safe. And what made the experience even worse was that Ace was right behind her. He was just standing in the corner looking out of place as he watched Gwen get scolded by her parents. He had even tried to speak up for her but she shut that down quickly."I told you not to speak. Shut it or go back outside." she turned swiftly, snapping at him.Puckett closed his mouth and looked away."Wait, what exactly is your relationship with this young man?" her father asked."He's a parasite," Gwen said dismissively.
