Tall buildings with transparent walls are the vogue in Seacrest. The high-tech architecture is sensational in the place, utilizing new advances. The architectures in Seacrest seek to avoid links in the past. The architectures emphasize transparency, seeking to communicate. Just like the white, which represents cleanliness, freshness, and simplicity. However, it has a negative side. Seacrest seems to be cold and isolated.
The Seacrest Main Hall has a LED wall. It produces colorful lights that shine every evening in the place. The lights make the place less lonely, that’s what The Zenith believes. The Zenith is in the highest position in the Seacrest. The person under this position prefers the pronoun ‘It’.
Inside in a white and cold room, Dealla Brouclier is staring blankly in the glass wall. The wall reflects her face. She has a heart-shaped face with a hawk nose and a thin upper lip. Dark circles are spotted under her almond eyes. She has been feeling blue for the past few days. It was her first mission yet, it failed. The Zenith told her to be proud of herself because she was able to survive.
How could she be proud when she was the only one who came home alive?
Yesterday, Leo informed her that she has a new mission together with Arnav Fisk Earwyn, the second most powerful person in the Seacrest.
It makes her ponder. How come he’s her partner? He’s always alone during his missions.
Dealla stops herself from pondering. She stares at her face for a while before getting to her feet. She prepares herself for her second mission.
Sucess is her only choice. One is enough. She no longer know what to do if the outcome will remain the same.
She changes her clothes into NPU's field uniform. Her uniform is a fitted white jumpsuit that has half-an-inch thick zippers down the front. Her stoic expression doesn’t change as she wears her black combat boots. Her emotionless eyes scan what she needed for the mission. Her gaze stops on her black padded belt, she fills it with different kinds of weapons.
“It's complete,” she whispers to herself.
She closes the war bag and hang it on her shoulder. The bright hallway is very silent and it made her heart hurts. The odd silence and coldness pierce a hole in her heart.
“I can no longer hear their voices, but I will always remember and treasure them. Forever.”
She is about to cry but she stops herself. She diverts her attention to the tapping sounds made by her combat boots. It is kind of satisfying noises.
When she enters the NPU'S main office, an odd atmosphere welcomes her. Some of the NPUs cannot look at her straight in the eyes and some of them are wearing unfamiliar facial expressions. Her gaze lands on Leo, the only person who acts like his usual self.
Leo is the commander of the NPU. He's always wearing stoic expressions and talk less. Dealla is comfortable with him because she thinks that he understands her since they have similarities. She could be right, Leo is an understanding person. However, he's very committed to his duty and the Zenith. He does everything for the Zenith, it's unhealthy for some reasons.
She goes to her chair where her name is printed on it. No one greets her, it is unusual. She convinces herself that they are just being weird because of the tragedy that happened but there is a part of herself that doesn’t believe it. Her senses are telling her that there is something else, something is off.
"Good day. We are gathered to send off our co-NPUs, Arnav Fisk Earwyn, and Dealla Brouclier. They are assigned to a mission located in the Falling River..."
Dealla is very preoccupied. She doesn’t even comprehend everything. She only understands that she and Arnav will go to Falling River and eliminate new dangerous creators.
“I'm still an amateur for this. I don't deserve to be part of NPU. I don't deserve this position,” she tells herself.
Tears fell to her cheeks. She is about to wipe it but someone does it for her. She is shocked and embarrassed but the man only chuckles.
"You're spacing out, NPU Dealla,” the man says.
"I'm sorry, NPU Arnav." Those are the only words she can afford to blurt out.
"I don't like your words, NPU Dealla. Gather your senses. They'll send us after a minute."
She nods.
Speaking is hard for her to do. It is obvious that she is not in a healthy state but she is still given a mission. Maybe the rumor about how inconsiderable the Zenith is true. Dealla could no longer blame some NPUs for wanting to leave the group.
"Good luck, Dealla." Dylan hugs her.
Dylan is one of Dealla's close friends. He's playful and comfortable to be with. They have opposite personalities but they click to each other.Another tear fell from Dealla's eyes. This is what she needs, a human's warmth and comfort. Unfortunately, her time is up. She needs to start her mission.
The employees in the Seacrest Main Hall turn their gazes away from Dealla and she notices it. It makes her more guilty. Some of them might feel sorry for her, some might blaming her for not saving her comrades, or maybe there is another reason.
She breathes deeply when they finally stop. They are in the Access, the main entrance of the Seacrest. One of the NPUs opens a portal for them. Arnav is the first one who steps in. It takes a few seconds before Dealla finally steps in and when she does, she sees how Dylan and the others cry.
She is so confused about what is happening. Before she can ask Arnav, he evaporates from her sight. She takes it as a sign. She has no time for confusion and doubts. Saving herself is the only thing she needs to do so that she can find Arnav and finish their mission.
A blue-green smoke comes out from her both hands. Her senses are heightened, she senses something dangerous, a presence she doesn't encounter before.
An odd-looking creature comes out from nowhere. It looks like a big burned bulldog with red eyes. It has a long tongue with stink saliva.
"This is what they were talking about. I must finish this now," she says while gritting her teeth.
She opens her war bag using her telekinesis ability. Daggers are floating because of Dealla's blue-green smokes.
"I must target the heart." She did.
She frowns when the creature lost its consciousness after she stabs it from the heart. There is no blood. The wound produces stink smokes until it eats the whole body of creatures and evaporates.
"It's not too dangerous. The presence I felt a while ago was not from this creature," she tells herself.
She shrugs and takes a picture of the residual and then she carefully collects it. The creature she encountered is new. The NPUs will have a research about it.
She heightens her senses again to find Arnav. She stops walking when she feels another presence, powerful yet calming. It's not a threat presence so she changes her direction towards it.
"Bulwark," she says when she sees the force field protecting the Bulwark, the place for ordinary people.
The shield, that's how they call the force field protecting the Bulwark. The shield is a rare flair. Flair is the term for special abilities or power.
There was one person who had the flair called, The Shield. Her name is Clandes. She was powerful but too soft-hearted.
"This is very fascinating," Dealla whispers to herself.
Her eyes are full of amazement. She finds something familiar from the shield. The color is similar to her smoke, which is blue.
She steps back and pulls her hands after she touches the shield.
"What was that?" she asks, about the glimpse of someone's memories she saw.
She is about to touch it again but she hears Arnav's voice, screaming her name. She collects herself and runs towards Arnav's location.
"Dealla." Someone pulls her and takes her to hide under the roots of a big tree.
"What is happening?" She is very alarmed. Her heart is beating fast. Arnav is holding her tightly. He just saw something that scared him.
"There's no point of hiding. They know our presence," he whispers.
Dealla is confused. It scares her how Arnav holds her, even his voice sounds so scared. How come? He's strong and the location is his advantage.
Arnav's flair is manipulating water. They're in the Falling River, the river that separates the Bulwark and the Embrima. Dealla’s eyes widen when she remembers the story of the Falling River.
"We'll fight." Dealla blurts out.
Arnav doesn't answer. He is the only one who knows their situation. He knows everything that's why he took this mission.
"No,” he sounds defeated.
Dealla is very confused, she is confused from the beginning of this mission. She's confused why she's partnered with Arnav, how the other NPUs reacted, and why this mission doesn’t have detailed plans. She is confused and it is the feeling that dominated her system.
"Listen, Dealla.” Arnav makes Dealla faced him.
Her confusion increases when she sees the expression of her partner. He's usually calm but his expressions now are showing contradiction of his usual self.
"I love you." Her eyes widen because of his words. It is not her first time hearing it but she usually hears it every time they share a kiss or after they kissed.
Her whole system alarms.
What the fuck is happening?
Arnav met their foreheads, both of them are breathing heavily. He cups her face. He wants to embrace her totally, he wishes.
"We'll meet each other again."
"Of course, we will!"
Arnav chuckles. How does he managed to do that?
"I love you, Dealla. I do and I will always do."
She grips his arms that are embracing her.
"Why are you saying these things?" she finally asks in a calm tone.
Arnav shakes his head and that's when she realizes that from the beginning of the mission, everyone is hiding something from her. She is occupied with many thoughts and she wasn't able to comprehend the signs she saw before she entered the portal.
She comprehends now but it's too late.
"The Zenith wants me dead," she states.
"I love you.”
"I think, you meant I'm sorry."
"I love you, Dealla."
"Stop saying that," she cries.
She thinkst she deserves to die but she is also scared. She has a lot of dreams but if killing her means peace, then she'll take it. At least, that's what she thinks.
"Let's escape, Arnav." She feels embarrassed of what she said.
"We will."
She is shocked by his response. She thinks that he was joking but his eyes doesn't tell so.
"How?" she asks, desperately.
"Just remember everything I'll say and you'll be fine."
"What do you me–" He kisses her lips to cut her off.
Their kiss lasted for a few seconds.
"I'm sorry, Dealla. I need to do this."
Before she could react, water crawls into her body. She knows that any moment, the water will be turned into ice and it will be her end.
She can fight, she really can, but she chooses to stay still and looks at the man she loves; taking her life.
At least, he's the one who'll end me.
Dealla’s eyes locks on like magnets. Under heavy lids, she is able to open her eyes. She blinks as her eyes adjust. She is in the hospital. The room is home-like. There is a single bed, with white bedsheets and pillows. Her gaze surveys every detail inside the room. Everything is new to her—it is primitive. "What's this place?" her hoarse voice echoes. She is alone in the room but she hears noises, even it is far away from her. She wanted to get up but she was tied to the bed. She frowned. She felt energy trying to wake her whole system. Why this place looks unfamiliar? Why do I feel odd? Am I under simulation? Her body is weak but there is something inside it that tries to make her strong. She raises her left arm and then, she sees how the wound heals on its own. She screams. She sees a flair relating to healing or generati
The Bulwarkians were making commotions about Peony's issues. They were alarmed by her presence. Who wouldn't, anyway? The shield is protection for Bulwarkians. No one can enter the Bulwark unless if you are a Bulwarkian. Peony was from Seacrest, she was a Seacrestian. How did she manage to enter?Peony is an official Bulwarkian now. The queen declared it. A lot of people were against it but the queen decided that she’s the only one can change."Anyone who dares to hurt Peony Soledad will be sentenced to death." Peony can feel the kindness and hospitality of Amnisty and Queen Sheele towards her but it didn't make her complacent. She's still afraid of the people who wanted to hurt her. She's experiencing nightmares."Peony!"
The 3rdBatch were celebrating their graduation. They were laughing. Their first mission was fast approaching and they were very excited."Deal."Dealla turned to look at the guy who called her 'Deal'. He's the only one who called her in that way. The rest of the 3rdBatch called her Ella."Peter." the guy smiled when she mentioned his name.Peter was approaching her with his gigantic steps. He's kind and friendly but his actions towards Dealla were different. He wanted something from her, something beyond their friendship.Peter arrived in front of Della with a wide smile. His cheeks were a bit red."What is it?" Dealla asked, pretending to be interested.Peter thought that Dealla was really like that, with a stoic expression and monotone voice but she's not. She's cheerful with someone else."Is it fine with you i
For a moment, Peony felt home. She was just looking at the man but he gave her an obscure feeling. A feeling she cannot fully understand but she knew, she wanted to feel it. She missed the feeling of feeling it.“I think I know you,” Peony was the first one who spoke. The man who she called, Zachary, painfully smiled. He was keeping his distance from her, but deep inside, he wanted to embrace her. He wanted to embrace his sister.“Of course you know me, Ate Dealla.”She stiffened.Hearing her former name brought her bad memories, no, it brought her guilt. Guilt for not able to do her duty. She cleared her throat. A lot of questions were running inside her head.I
The cold air made Zachary lonelier. When he was young, he thought that his flair can make him visit every place. His eyes stayed at The Shield. He can see it because he's in the highest part of the tallest tower, the Seacrest Tower. The lights of the Seacrest City were colorful but it didn’t make him happy. It was like everything he saw was black and white. His virtual screen appeared. Cammi was calling him. He tapped the answer button but didn’t bother to talk.“Zachary, NPU Theo is finding you.” as usual, Cammi was the only one who cared about him.“Where are you?”No response.“Please, come here. At least make a report. Your sister won’t be proud of you if you lost your position.”Cold air embraced him. The coldness was the only thing he felt since Dealla went missing. The Zenith s
Cammi and Zachary stayed in an unfrequented part of Padureclan. They were still gaining their full strengths, especially Zachary. Cammi was the only one who was able to roam around the Bulwark but she wasn’t able to enter Regal. Regal is the most crowded part of Bulwark and it has a lot of warriors.“How are you feeling?” she asked while feeding Zachary.“Better. Thanks.” Zachary answered with a warm smile.Cammi nodded and smiled back. Zachary’s small gestures made her heart melt. It was enough for her to be with him. She just wanted to be with the man who inspired her for the rest of her life.“I saw her, NPU Dealla.” her voice became serious. She gave Zachary a water before continuing.“There’s a rumor that Mauvais, the leader of ClandesTeam, is only using her. He accepted her easily which is not his characteristic. He saw the
Amnisty Soledad was fixing her hair. She always kept it in a neat and clean classic bun. It was her day-off, she doesn’t have a day off but the queen insisted to make her rest.It was awkward for her not to wear her uniform. It was like something is missing. She looked at her reflections in the mirror for a few seconds before she went to her horse. She was living alone. She grew up without her parents. King and Queen Tourbillon were the ones who took care of her. As an exchange for their kindness, Amnisty participated in the Second Batch of Bulwarkian warriors. She was the youngest, loved by all.“They will treasure it for the rest of their lives,” she whispered to herself. She was looking at the children who were playing. It reminded her of her friends, during gold-old days. She smiled bitterly and diverted her gaze to the road.Laying in bed or eve
The Embrima is the most chaotic place. It is divided into four units. The unit nearest to the Falling River is the Unit of Witches. The palace of Desaix was quiet. Quiet but not peaceful. Peace never came back in their hearts when their parents died. Hatred, sadness, greediness, and any other negative emotions were the ones visiting them. As the years passed by, they invited those emotions to stay in their palace, even in their hearts. Those emotions gladly accepted their invitations. Lilia was writing another novel. It would become famous if her reputation wasn’t ruined. Famous or not, it’s still a masterpiece. She bit her lower lip when she read the last paragraph she wrote. She had been reading it many times. Something was wrong but she wasn’t able to point out what was it. “Vlad!” she called her brother. Vladimir arrived promptly in front of her. His actions were very cautious as if they were fragile things surrounded him. Lilia read silently the paragraph once again. S
Mauvais was on his way to the palace. He wanted to meet Amnisty. She was the only person he thought he can reach out to about Clandes. He squinted when Bulwarkian warriors were in hurry. He stopped for a while, making way for the warriors. He was about to step into the palace but he saw wounded Bulwarkians. His eyes widened. He was confused when Clandes’ image appeared in his mind.He cursed under his breath and ran to find Amnisty. He needed to find her. She went to through formal training. She had a lot of capabilities compared to him.“Amnisty,” he shouted when he saw her going out the other way. Amnisty was in hurry also.If she was needed in the field, it means a lot of warriors were injured or already dead. The Embriman faces flashed in Mauvais’ mind, he clenched his fist.
Mauvais kept on knocking. His heartbeat wasn’t normal. Clandes was acting strangely, a lot of scenarios flooded into his mind. His shaky hands stopped from knocking when Clandes did not respond. His mind was in chaos. He needed to calm down and think properly! He cursed inside his mind and ran. He took the key from the bedroom of his parents. His parents didn’t notice him, the thing that he was thankful for at that moment. Deep inside, someone was telling him to keep everything to himself. If something happened to Clandes, he must keep it to himself.Mauvais hands were still shaking. He wasn’t able to open the door immediately. The key fell and he wasn’t able to pick it up right away. Paranoia attacked him.“An-” he stood in the doorway. His mouth was hung but he closed it and gulped.Clandes was staring blankly where the man stood a while ago. She was still sitting on the floor. Her nakedness is displayed in front of Mauvais.“Ande,
Clandes fixed herself when they heard footsteps, it was Mauvais. Amnisty cleared her throat. Clandes’ mark was bothering her. Her head might explode if she cannot figure out right away who marked her friend.“We’re going home now,” said Mauvais. He sounded pissed and the two girls noticed it but didn’t comment.Clandes and Amnisty glanced with each other. Clandes smiled while blushing just like any other teenagers who just confessed their crushes to their friends while Amnisty was not able to get over yet about the mark. She felt like regretting bringing up the topic. She felt stupid for asking Clandes about her lover!“Did something wrong happened while I’m gone?” Mauvais asked while raising his right eyebrow.Clandes shook her head immediately while Amnisty didn’t respond. She stared at Mauvais. He cared Clandes and Amnisty knew that. Keeping the mark from Mauvais was a betrayal but if she will tell him, the c
It was early in the morning, the fresh sunray kissed Clandes’ face. She lazily opened her eyes and got up. While doing her morning routine, she heard chants. It's Friday, and the Bulwark will do their Friday routine!Every Friday, the warriors will have games. It’s fun to watch because they were all competitive. As an opening, the chants were part of the routine. She immediately went to her window and positioned herself. She was sitting comfortably, waiting to see Sheele, the future queen. She has an angelic voice that Clandes admired.“Waiting for someone?” Clandes glanced at Mauvais who just came into her room. He sat near to her with a smile on his face. Clandes rolled her eyes secretly.“Yeah, as usual, it’s Sheele.”“Mmmmh, I see. I thought you’re waiting for someone, except for Sheele.”Clandes kept her face straight. She was i
Mauvais was walking with a smile on his face. He was famous, there were a lot of girls trying to get his attention but he focused on one girl, Clandes. Clandes spent most of her time reading books. She doesn’t have friends except for Mauvais. He poked the girl to catch her attention.“Smile, it’s our birthday,” Mauvais said with a warm smile. Clandes raised her eyebrow at him and rolled her eyes.“So, what? It’s nothing special.”“Come on, Ande. A lot of our classmates greeted us. If you can’t say thank you, at least smile at them.”“They only greeted you,” Clandes replied with a smug face. She walked faster to avoid the fangirls of Mauvais.“Happy birthday, Mauvais.”“Happy birthday, handsome. We prepared something for you.”Clandes just rolled her eyes many tim
Peony's body was starting to produce different colors. Her veins were filled with blue liquids and it can be seen through her skin. Cammi and Zachary were stunned, they were clueless. When the colors and lights went gone, the surroundings went silent. A long scream of agony covered the Bulwark. Cammi and Zachary looked at each other."Why did we heard that? Is it outside of the Bulwark?" Cammi asked. The truth, she and Zachary had a theory of what was happening but they were scared to believe it.Peony sat up. Her face was covered by her long black silky hair. She remained her head lower."Peony, are you ok-" Zachary didn't finish his sentence when Peony looked at him. He pulled his hands that were holding his sister's arm. His mouth hung open."What's wrong? It feels weird," she asked.
The ClandesTeam unit was not the same anymore. Peony was not talkative but her presence brought something to the ClandesTeam. Mauvais arrived at his unit silently but the members noticed him. Gavin and Carol greeted him cheerfully while the Tourbillon twins nodded at him."We'll go outside of Bulwark tomorrow," he announced and went to his room.It cannot be seen in his face that he's affected, but the ClandesTeam somehow noticed that he's gloomy. The members looked at each other when Mauvais wasn't in there anymore."Well, it's hard," Gavin said, trying to start a conversation but no one responded.Carol was silent. She and Peony are the closest to each other in the ClandesTeam. It was hard to believe that Peony left without any proper goodbye. They remained silent while drinking their tea. Audenzia's tea spilled when someone screamed. The scream was
