Meguitte watched him in the mirror as he draped his jacket over the back of the armchair. She peeled the bracelets off her wrist and set them on the glossy polished surface of the dresser without taking her eyes from his reflection. He sat in the chair to remove his shoes and looked up at her when she didn’t reply.

“I have… reservations,” she admitted in answer to his raised eyebrow. “It is… wrong to give the Mer Leighton. I know,” she said as his expression shifted. “I know. And I… I agree. He’s not been honest with us. He has not helped us as much as he could. His focus has been on his own goals. And he made a selfish choice – a racist choice in a way – in how he chose to pursue immortality for Verina…” She trailed off and pulled out her earrings to cover.

loved these characters, but they feel so resolute. I'm not ready for the end. that last paragraph feels foreboding
