Havermouth, Present Time

Niarthen was keeping human time as there was no Mer party waiting on the bridge when they drove into town. There was nothing at all in fact - no people, no cars. It was like walking into an old Cowboy movie at noon when a shootdown was anticipated by the locals. Aislen would not have been surprised to see tumbleweed roll down the main street.

The mental noise, however, let her know that the street and buildings weren’t as empty as they appeared. It did not take much, once she knew where to look for them, to spot the werewolf soldiers positioned in the crenelations of the rooftops and upper windows of the shops.

As Aislen closed the car door behind her, a shadow dragged over the ground, and she looked up. Samuel’s outline was dramatic against the blue sky. There were no clouds in which for him to hide and so he did not try to, flying low so that the details of wings and tail, the ridges and spikes along his spine, could all be made out.
