My jaw must have shattered on the floor because I can’t believe all of this.

“Oh my God!” I whisper as I take the console out of his hand.

“What?” He chuckles as he asks me.

“We never had that talk in your car, right?” I continue to whisper in astonishment, letting my eyes wander around the room. “You held and killed me in some field. I’m dead! And that is my paradisal vision.”

He shakes his head as he sets his character.

Toad, by the way.

“You are crazy.”

I laugh as I turn to choose my character, still clinging to my unicorn. “I take the Princess.”

He laughs as he mocks me, “Who would have ever thought?”

I totally blend out this horrible evening as I race my crush in the form of a little mushroom-headed figure.

Starting the second game, I let go of my plush toy, committed to winning the next race.

After what feels like 100 more games, Giovanni gets up to look for another game.
