Chapter 25: No Place To Hide!

Maisie's POV:

In my room at home, I only had a simple sheet on my pad of a bed to cover myself up with at night. It was old and had a lot of holes in it. At night, it got really cold, but it was what I knew was mine as no one else wanted it. I was not allowed to have anything nice, no matter what it was. Even though I was sad most of the time, I still had a sheet to cover up with and a thin, plain pad to sleep on. Then during the day, I only had to worry about one outfit to leave my room to do my chores in. When the day was over, I would wash in the river if I got dirty and then do it again the next day, over and over again. That was my life, plain and simple.

When I heard a notice, I leaned over just a bit so I could get a look under the hanging blanket. I noticed there was a set of feet right on the other side. I placed my hand over my mouth so I didn't make a sound as I sat up once more, waiting on them to leave and not come back. I felt better when
