Chapter 4

The entire crowd of people standing in front of us gape at him and then at me. As if they saw E.T. in real life. Yes, I saw the movie. But whatever their state, I can bet mine is worse. I can't believe that out of thousands of werewolves I came across Xavier Ash has to be the person I have to seduce for my survival. This means only one thing. I'm screwed forever.

"Sir, I am so glad you could finally honour us with your presence." The tuxedo man whose height and stature appears much smaller than the King Alpha standing beside me. Oh God! What have I gotten myself into?

"Hmm. Prepare the stage. I have an announcement to make." The Alpha commands and then looks down at my petite, humbly discomfortable self. "Come with me."

I silently follow him behind as he struts towards the raised platform that lies on the eastern wing of the Acadia. The corners of the stage are decorated with silk red curtains tied with golden curtain rings and a small chandelier hangs from the carved, golden ceiling. I have been accustomed to this place many times, but never did I imagine that one bad day,I will be standing on top of it, beside the most dangerous King Alpha.

"Everyone." He holds the mike, though I wonder about the speaker's utility as his voice is already loud enough. "I stand here to declare my first marriage trial, who unfortunately appears to be a human, Miss Hazel Barnard."

Everyone claps, while some whisper. I can see a group of few people who are clearly dissatisfied with the announcement. One is almost fuming to the extent that the hall will be soon filled with smoke. Extra dramatic effects. I feel self conscious as everyone in the hall scans me from top to bottom. Some even grimace at my look. I'm sure about what they are saying. Fragile human with an average face. How is she going to impress the lord himself?

"Another important declaration that I want to make is that…" he continues, his voice booming through the speakers and making the floor beneath my feet vibrate. "...this is going to be the only marriage trial. After that, if Miss Hazel fails to gain my affection, I would stay mateless." The crowd gasps at what the Alpha said. Thousands of dreams break on this particular day. Including mine. The only difference is...they want status, I want freedom.

"But Sir, that will be against the law of this pack." Someone in the crowd speaks out, keeping his voice as respectable as possible.

"Don't you remember whom you are talking to?" The Alpha growls. "I make the law. I am the law." He says and the man bends his head. Such an egoistic bastard! "I hope everybody makes their peace with my declaration or else you should prepare yourself for the consequences!"

After the announcement, everyone gets into a random chit chat session holding the glass of wine. The girls flirt around the powerful wolves to get some attention. Meanwhile the Alpha talks to a group of men in suits who by the way of their speaking appear to be his workers. Hmm. Workers in suits. I wonder if the maids are in flowery gowns. I stand beside him like a show doll, my mind completely buzzing with all the thoughts and questions. Just then, someone calls me from behind and I turn to find my hell of a family standing. Their eyes pretty blaze like hellfire ready to burn and oil fry me and then eat me up as their Sunday meal. Such caring people.

"What are you—" Lisa starts with her usual spat but her medusa-like expressions change into a baby angel with a smile as her eyes deflect above me. "Sir Ash." She addresses the Alpha with honey dripping from her mouth as if she was born with a honeycomb in her mouth. My family bows in front of him. Never saw them doing that before. Wonders never cease to happen.

The Alpha hums. "You all must be her family."

"Oh, yes, yes." Says my mom-slash-aunt her matte lips stretched into a smile. "She's actually our adopted child." She adds. Well, well. Some things never change.

"And we apologize on her part if she did something wrong or crossed any line." Dad adds. "She had failed several trials before,so may I suggest that you see my other daughter here." He points towards Lisa who flutters her eyelashes and bows again, this time the neckline exposing her deep set cleavage. I don't understand how sexual seducing helps because as far as I read, wolves are not horny like humans. Their carnal pleasures only arouse after they find their mate and stay limited to their mate. Something I very much appreciate about this tribe.

Hence,as expected, the Alpha just eyes her for a second and then looks back at dad. "I'm very much conscious of my choice. Thank you."

"Oh, but she is of our pure blood. Not like this foreign blood." Mom looks at me, the wrinkles showing under her overly applied foundation as she grimaces. "And she is very talented. She can cook, be a good housewife and also warm the bed when required." She grins showing her white teeth. Lisa can cook? She can do a lot of things, but house duties don't exactly fall into them.

The Alpha stares at her silently, his green eyes reflecting no appreciation for the CV of her beloved daughter and pure blood. Something I can at least agree with him. He doesn't say a word and looks at me. "I will be busy right now. I need you to pack your bags and stay ready in the morning tomorrow. I will send my men to pick you up."

I gulp down the lump in my throat. "Okay."

He walks away in his usual glory, without sparing a second glance at my family. I turn towards my family who gain back their venomous stare at me and walk away. I follow them behind. I'm so tired. All I want to do is forget that all of this drama ever happened and sleep on my not so comfortable bed. But I know better than that. Since now I am the marriage trial of the King Alpha himself, another level of drama is waiting for me in the house.

"What did you do?" Lisa asks as she kicks the chair away, showing her devil mode in the fullest form possible. I wonder why Mom and dad never put her in control. If I was the one doing it, I would be living on the road. But then again, that is the thing. They love her as their only child and hate me as the only burden in the family. "I promise you Lisa, it was nothing. He came up to me himse—" my voice cuts off under Lisa's hold on my dress. She starts tearing Mariam's hard work apart in a second, her sharp nails digging into my skin. Tears swell up my eyes. "Where? Where is it? Did you let him fuck you in this dress?" She sniffs my body and keeps doing it, her claws digging into the skin of my arms. "Lisa, please. It's hurting." My tears start sliding down my eyes and soak my cheeks. "Where is it? His mark on you!" She keeps looking but after finding nothing, gives up

There is a knock at the front door of the house and it shakes up the core within me. Dad walks ahead and gestures to me to behave properly in front of the King Alpha. I straighten my dress and my hair. Mom did not put any effort in my look because as per her plan,I am supposed to look ugly in comparison to Lisa who is all dolled up to steal hearts. I just hope the guys understand that it is all exterior. I never understood why men go for external looks when after a certain time it all becomes common. The books I read spoke about the love that emerged from knowing the soul of a person. How they actually are from within and not from their looks. I wonder what changed. The door opens and two large, black suit wearing men stand on the porch with their ramrod straight backs and proud uplifted heads. They are certainly werewolves who work under the King Alpha. The air of royalty they radiate from just being working under him makes it obvious what a high position

Calm green eyes stare at me as he steps inside, his well built, large body radiating dominance. I feel like sitting up straight in my seat and then the need of standing to give him respect. And I do so. He waves his hand. "No need. Sit down." He orders and I do so, again. It is as if I walk on his command. Though considering my history, I have been working on pretty much everyone's command. Who really cares what I want to do? He strides towards me and stands tall above, making my small figure look up at him, literally craning my neck. "I hope you understand that this place is only temporary. Do not get used to it." He says in his loud voice, making me shiver. I believe this is the type of power the King Alpha should hold in his voice or else no one would obey him."Yes, King Alpha." I say, more loudly than required."No need to call me that. When it comes to addressing me, you use Sire when nobody is around. And when people are aro

After eating the full plate of pasta that tastes like heaven, I lay down on the cloud that is called a bed. My eyelids feel heavy and the designed ceiling on top of me starts to get hazy with each second. And before my consciousness can warm me, darkness evades everything. But not before seeing the reflection of a very handsome face with dazzling green eyes. I could never tell that King Alpha is so good looking.A thud wakes me up from my sleep and I sit straight on the bed, finding myself in the exact condition from where I left. I didn't even change my clothes. What an idiot! Another knock comes from the door and I call the person to come in. The door opens wide and Olivia walks in with her eyes fixed on the ground. I believe that it is the rule here that royals should not be looked up to by the maids. I was pretty much treated the same way in my house. Calling it my house would be an overstatement."It's alright. You can look

Olivia fidgets with the fabric of her maid uniform. "I don't know. But from what I can tell, it will be very difficult for you to make your place here. Our Sire is a very complicated man." She inhales sharply and I frown."Complicated?" Honestly, what I could make out of him from the first day is that he is a very arrogant, cocky person who thinks very highly of himself and little of others. At least that's how he behaved in front of me."You will learn eventually. You came today, right? Maybe in a few weeks, you will understand what I am saying." Her voice goes deep and I gulp the lump in my throat. This does not sound good at all. "Eh–if you don't mind–umm–may I ask how you met Sire?""Well, in the Acadia where the mating ball is held." I shrug.Olivia's eyebrows furrow in perplexity. "Okay. But as far as I know Sire, he is a very picky person

"What is that? What way?" I shake Olivia who appears to be in a mode of trance, her eyes fixed ahead of me.She blinks and looks at me with a confused look. "Huh?""You told me that there is a way. A way for me to not go to the Dark Shadow Society. A way for me to survive." I say, desperation clinging to my voice. I cannot help myself. The moment she said there is a way, it's like I see a small fragment of light in the darkness. Even if it's not the proper escape route, it is something for me."Oh, yes." She bites her lip. "Sorry, I was just thinking about something. But yes, I know a way but it is also very risky."I hold her palms and look at her with pleading eyes. "Please. Just tell me anyway. Living with the one and only King Alpha is a risk in itself." I mean what I say. That man is extremely scary and I don't know what fate lies ahead of me. And it is hard to believe that tho

I open my eyes and find darkness all around. There is a small glint of light on my left that illuminates the polished walls and the huge double door in front of me. Where am I? When did I reach here? I turn back, but empty, black darkness appears ahead of me. This is so strange. Finding nowhere else to go, I walk towards the double door and put my hand on the cold mahogany. I slowly push it open and see a balcony, with a person's silhouette standing in front of the railing. The full moon shines under the night sky in it's full glory and the stars twinkle brightly. It looks beautiful. But who is that person?"Hello?" I call that person out but the silhouette does not turn. It keeps standing in front of the railing. I frown and step a little closer. "Uhm, do you stay here?" I try again, but the silhouette does not move an inch. It is standing there like a statute. And then, it stands on top of the railing. My eyes grow wide. "Hey! As I walk towards my room, I see a shadow on the wall passing my eyes in a second. It was like a blink. I turn around and look everywhere. But all I find are the silent walls, the creepy paintings and the door to my room. That's all. It might be a trick of the light, but after going through weird experiences in this mansion, I am not so sure anymore. Has someone walked by? But how can they be so quick? I shrug, annoyed by my own internal questions. I should stop asking so many questions to things that I can never understand. Just like that werewolf in the forest. The next morning, I wake up and start making my bed. I yawn a few times, because the sleep wasn't good enough. I had weird dreams of that werewolf chasing me in that forest. God knows what's happening to me. If things go like this, I will become a mental patient soon. Hopefully, the mental asylum will be a better p

I don't understand my own instincts right now. I should be running out of this place and hiding deep inside the mansion, even though it does not feel safe there either. But rather, I am standing here, caressing the fur of the wolf's face to comfort it. If it gets too comfortable then I will be the next meal. Yet something about it feels very familiar. Have I seen it before? I barely have come across any wolves before, how can I know this one? The wolf does not resist my action and just sits on the ground with his eyes closed. The blood flow had stopped, but medicine was required to heal it. How am I supposed to tell it to come with me? And where would I get the medicine?Sadness grips over me as I understand that I cannot help it after this. Even though it is one dangerous creature, no one should be considered harmful before you learn their reason. Maybe I am just thinking too much. But then the sound of something crack catches my attention and I look frantically here and there. Someone is here. "Who's there?" I shout, but no one responds. My legs start walking ahead, my vision entering the darker parts of the wood. I shouldn't have come here. I should be going back. But everything is so dark that I can't even remember my way back to the mansion. All of a sudden, a loud growl hits my ears and I squinch at the sound. My heart beat catches it's pace and without a second thought, I start running. I don't know where I am going, but more and more trees invite my sight, enveloped with the darkness of the evening. No one will be able to hear me at this moment, when I am so deep in this forest. Will I even be able to come out? What if I am lost here f
