Pyotr opens the door for me and I step into the dining room. Looking around the room I see a large oak table covered in lavish food. My mouth begins to water at the sight of the meal.
Pyotr closes the door behind us. Once again grabbing my hand he guides me over to the table. He releases my hand so he can pull my chair out. I take a seat placing my hands in my lap. "T-Thank you, m'lord," I say. I watch as Pyotr takes his seat and he stares at me for a moment. "Do I make you uncomfortable miss Clara?" He suddenly asks. "N-No absolutely n...n-not," I reply in panic. He is a lord and I'm merely a humble peasant I'm not at all sure how to speak with him. The expression on Pyotr's face is unreadable but he seems to relax a little. "I see, that is good to hear. You must be quite hungry just a bit longer and they will serve us our plates," he tells me. I nod in response while staring at the golden tablecloth in front of me. My eyes shift across the room and I take in the room. The room is lit up by a large crystal chandelier. The chandelier hangs above the center of the table candles adorning it. On the table underneath is a bright gold tablecloth. Food of the likes I've never seen sits on the table teasing my nose. My mouth waters in anticipation. The dining room doors open suddenly causing me to jump. My body jolts and my heart pounds at the unexpected noise. Pyotr looks over at me curiously. "Apologies m'lord I wasn't expecting the doors open so suddenly," I tell him. "No need to apologize," is all he says. Coming in through the doors is more of the same creatures from yesterday. Their stark white eyes and charcoal skin causes me a fright. The creatures remain silent as they begin to set the table with utensils. One of the creatures, the female whom I remember from yesterday walks to stand behind Pyotr. She is dressed in a white shirt and trousers, with a black corset over the shirt. "Alina, have you done everything I asked?" Pyotr questions her. "Yes my lord all the humans have been treated. I am waiting to hear word from our contact outside. Though news should arrive shortly, they will all be returning home soon," she informs him. "That is good news," Pyotr shakes his head. "Now I will over today's schedule as you eat," Alina says. Pyotr holds up a hand stopping her. "I have a guest with me for breakfast today. Meet me in my office after our meal to discuss the schedule," he says. "Yes my lord," Alina responds with a bow. I watch as she and the other creatures leave the room. While I wasn't looking Pyotr began to pile food on my plate. My plate is filled with honeyed ham, fluffy pancakes, and eggs. "Please do not be shy and eat," he tells me. I nod and begin to eat my meal. The food that touches my lips is unlike anything I've ever eaten. The sweet and salty ham leaves me craving more and the pancakes practically melt in my mouth. After swallowing down my food I look over at Pyotr and notice him watching me. I become conscious of him and advert my gaze. Surely if I talk it'll make things less awkward. "M'lord if you don't mind me asking. What are those strange creatures you have serving you?" I ask. Pyotr makes a strange face at my question. "Do you perhaps mean my shades?" He asks. "Is that what you call them? They are the tall ones with bat-like ears yes?" "Aw, so you are asking about my shades. They are nothing you should worry about. Those shades have been with me many years and would never betray my trust," he explains. "Oh, i-it wasn't that I d-didn't trust them that are just k-kinda scary is all." I brush my hair behind my ear nervously. "Their appearance is quite startling to those who have never seen them. But I assure you they are nothing like they look," he smiles. We go back to eating however I can't help but wonder where the others who were rescued with me are. I peer at Pyotr the question biting at the tip of my tongue. I glance at my plate and then back at Pyotr. He peeks over at me while taking another bite of the hot food. Swallowing his food he sets his fork down turning towards me. "Do you have something you would like to ask me miss Clara?" His burning ember eyes ensnare mine. I study his pale face my eyes traveling from his down to his nose and then lips. My gaze reaches his exposed chest and I advert my eyes biting my lip. How should I ask him without sounding rude? But maybe he really has done something with the others. I twist one of my curls around my finger before looking back up at Pyotr. "I-I was just wondering where t-the others who came with me are?" "Most of them are still resting and those who are sick and injured are being tended to by my doctor. If you are worried about them I can take you to their rooms after our meal?" He offers. I shake my head in relief a smile grazing my lips. "No i-it's ok I just wanted to make sure they were safe. I'm sure you must be very busy I'd hate to take up too much of your time," I say. "Miss Clara you need not worry about being a bother. If I found it bothersome I simply would not offer to do it." "I suppose you're right. Thank you for being so understanding." I return my attention to the food in front of me and we continue our meal in silence. It wasn't the kind of silence that was heavy or hard to breathe in. No, it was comfortable, the air around us was light and I can finally feel the bonds of trust beginning to sprout. Though I may never be able to completely trust Pyotr because of what he is I think we can work together toward the same goal. Pyotr clears his plate and then turns to look at me. "I have to know what drives you to want to help me. I am of the same kind as your captor, not to mention we barely know each other. So why do you follow me?"My eyes widen for a moment. Well at first I only said I wanted to help out of panic. But I can't watch this happen to anyone else. "M'lord I-I have watched several people from my village d-disappeared over the past couple of months. I believe i-it's the vampires doing it. I am t-tired of living in fear so if I can help I-I would like to," I tell him. "Your village has been targeted for a while you say?" He asks folding his hands in front of him. "Yes, m'lord." "Where might your village be located, Miss Clara?" I tilt my head trying to remember the exact location of my village. "M-My village is on the southern b-border of Samirya," I say. I watch as Pyotr runs a hand through his long hair. The shadows and candlelight cast on him from the chandelier makes his skin glow. He shifts in his seat and the light figures dance across his face. "If it's on the southern border that makes a lot of sense. I am truly sorry that your home has been a targ
I dash into the forest on the outskirts of my village. My feet pound against the tough dirt. Clouds of dust trail behind me as I continue hurrying away. My lungs tighten and burn with each breath I take. Slowing my pace, I stop, placing my hand on a nearby tree. My mind whirls as a headache begins to form. Looking behind me I don't see my parents. I sigh, placing a hand on my chest. The thumping of my heart can be felt through my thick outerwear. My breath trembles, as tears slide down my cheeks. Was running really the best option? I crouch down placing my head on my knees. I knew mother wanted me out and married. But to try and make me a mistress? I don't understand why she would want that. Gripping the roots of my hair I groan. Lowing myself completely to the ground, I rest my back against the tree. I look up at the sky beginning to calm myself. As I gaze upward I wonder if anyone noticed how pretty the sky is today. The blue is bright and soft all at once and
"I did not think they would use other humans as bait," Pyotr sighs. "I-I don't think the woman was human, s-she had red eyes," I tell him. Pyotr's face twists in disgust. Sighing, he runs a hand through his hair. "You were attacked by a sire vampire," he explains. I furrow my brows together, tilting my head. "What is a sire vampire?" I ask. Pyotr tips his head upward, tapping his fingers on the table. His eyes meet mine then he looks away. "Blood Fae have many unique abilities, though some we are better off without. If a blood Fae bites another creature and injects them with venom. That Fae can turn that being into a sire vampire. Sire vampires are slaves to the blood Fae. Once turned they lose all free will, and cannot disobey an order from their sire," he explains. My blood chills, as a shiver runs through me. I stare down at my lap, twisting my fingers together. I never knew they could have such control over another being. How scary. "To have that kind of c
Pyotr My body relaxes into the hug after several seconds. My tense muscles begin to loosen. Clara rests her head on my shoulder, soft cries escape her lips. I rub my hand in a circular motion on her back. This is exactly why I need to stop Tatiana's group. So people like Clara are no longer hurt. Clara lifts her head from my shoulder, her grassy green eyes meet my own. I am caught by the beauty of her eyes. The green is deep like an endless field. Her thick lashes blink slowly releasing tears. I reach out smoothing Clara's wild red hair before standing up. I hold my hand out, helping to pull her to her feet. Reaching into my back pocket I pull out a handkerchief and hand it to her. Tentatively she reaches out her pale, boney fingers taking the handkerchief. I watch as she dries her blotchy face when the material. Her cheeks blushed red, as she stares at the floor. Her green eyes, hooded by her dark red lashes. I lean against the table, troubled over what
I bid Alexei and Clara goodbye before heading back to my office. The long corridors of my mansion linger in silence. I sigh walking slowly through them. So many years have gone by and yet I have still barely achieved anything. I clench my fists together in frustration. My steady pace never slows as start to reach my office. Seeing the black oak door come into sight I stop, reaching out to open it. My fingers brush the cool metal handle as I push the door open crossing the threshold. Alina stands behind my desk chair waiting for me. Her eyes narrow as I step into the room. "It seems you took your time eating, master," eludes. "I showed Miss Clara around the mansion," I tell her. Alina brushes a hand through her hair, letting out a soft sigh. The moonlight filtering in through the window behind my desk dances across her charcoal skin. Moving to pull my chair out for me Alina speaks once more. "Are you sure it is a good idea to involve a hu
Clara My fingers tremble as I sort through the herbs the doctor told me to. The doctor stands next to me filling glass bottles with various medicines. His haunting white eyes drift over to me, watching as I work. His charcoal, white-clawed finger reaches out grabbing the feverfew in front of me. "If you mix the feverfew with lavender you can make a tea that helps with pain and inflammation," he tells. I look up at him my eyes meeting his eyes. He stares down at me from the bridge of his glasses. "Would y-you like me to start preparing the tea doctor?" I ask. "Alexei," he says. My face scrunches in confusion. "W-what?" I question. "My name is Alexei, not Doctor," he states. "Oh, m-my apologies Sir Alexei. Shall I get started on the t...tea?" I ask. "Yes, make sure you use the clean water in the tub over there," he tells me, pointing to a water basin. I nod and begin to prep the tea. My hands burn from small abrasions
I have spent days adjusting to my new life at Shade Manor. Pyotr has been busy preparing to send the other humans back. So we've seen very little of each other, though he makes the effort to escort me to breakfast every morning. I would like to see more of Pyotr, but he is just so busy. I jolt when someone taps me on the shoulder. Turning to look behind me, my eyes meet Alexei's. He arches a brow while staring me down and I see his left ear twitch. "What has you so lost in thought?" He asks. "O-Oh, I was just t-thinking of Lord Pyotr. H...He's been quite busy lately hasn't h-he," I comment. Alexei rolls his eyes, moving his hand from my shoulder to fold his arms. "You want to know who else is quite busy...me. Now get back to work before I send you out of my ward. You are not much help sitting there spacing out," Alexei barks. I flinch at his harsh tone. Adverting my gaze I stare down at the bandages in front of me. "Sorry, I...I'll get back t
A frosty chill blows over my body causing me to shiver. The cool air is filled with the sound of chattering people as we prepare to leave the Shadow Moore. I jump when I feel something touch my shoulder. Looking behind me I see Pyotr. His dark hair is tied neatly into a low ponytail. He's wearing a white tunic with a red vest tucked into black pants. Pyotr smiles at me, the moonlight glinting off his orange eyes makes them glow. "Are you ready, this will be the last time you can see your family for a while," he asks. I smile casting my eyes down. "I...I left once, I'm n-not afraid to d-do it again," I reply. Pyotr furrows his brows in confusion. "Do you count your kidnapping as leaving?" He questions. Lifting my gaze from the ground, I glance back up at Pyotr. "No, I-I don't count that. I l...left home shortly before I was t-taken," I tell him. "Well, hopefully, you can find some closure after your trip back home," he says. I sm
I bite my lip casting my eyes down, Alina steps to the side glancing at me. Slowly I shift my gaze towards her offering a stiff smile before looking back at Mother. Mother's brown eyes scrutinize me and I feel myself shrinking back. I inhale deeply taking a step towards her. "I will b-be staying with the l...lord who saved my life from now on," I tell her. Mother's face strains before she lets out a choked laugh. "Clara I can imagine what a lord would want with you. And my dear you are better off with me and the arrangements I have made." My face burns red at her words as I take a step back. Wiping my wet palms on my skirt I take in a breath. "I-I am not bedding the lord," I squeak in bewilderment. I side-eye Alina and watch as her body stiffens. She covers her face with her hand attempting to hold back her laughter. I look back at Mother who stares at me with a raised brow. "If you are not bedding the lord now the time will come. Girls like yo
I close my eyes while a sigh slips past my lips. Wiping my sweaty palms on my dress I stand up, my legs trembling. Alina stares at me a moment before standing up. "Are you alright?" She asks softly. Scrunching my hands in the skirt of my dress I cast my eyes down. "I'm j-just nervous is a...all," I tell her. "What do you have to be so nervous about?" She wonders. "My mother is r-rather intimidating and w-well we argued the l...last time we saw each other," I explain. "She should be rather happy to see you then, should she not?" She raises a brow at me. As Alina talks she opens the carriage door stepping out and I follow her. "I should h-hope so," I respond to her. I take in my surroundings watching as more people pour out from the parked carriages. They are all smiling, clearly relieved to be home. Though the only thing running through my mind is how my mother is sure to react. I ran away before she could sell me off. She's going
Warm sunlight leaks in through the carriage window. I breathe in the light crisp air as I open my eyes. I blink several times trying to adjust to the unexpected light. "I see you are finally awake," I hear Alina say across from me. Sitting up I stretch my arms before glancing over at her. Alina sits tall and straight in her seat eyes fixed forward. "H-How long was I asleep?" I ask. "For a couple of hours. While you were out we passed through the Shadow Moore boundaries and will soon be in Samirya," she informs me. "I see, have t-the drivers taken any breaks during this t...time?" I ask. "You mean the coachman? They have not rested yet, it is imperative that we keep on track," she tells me. I nod, but before I can reply Alina speaks again. "Actually you are right, we are going to need a break to change forms," she says thoughtfully. I blink at her questioningly, tilting my head slightly. "Change forms?" I ask. "Yes, we shades
