I dash into the forest on the outskirts of my village. My feet pound against the tough dirt. Clouds of dust trail behind me as I continue hurrying away. My lungs tighten and burn with each breath I take. Slowing my pace, I stop, placing my hand on a nearby tree. My mind whirls as a headache begins to form.
Looking behind me I don't see my parents. I sigh, placing a hand on my chest. The thumping of my heart can be felt through my thick outerwear. My breath trembles, as tears slide down my cheeks. Was running really the best option? I crouch down placing my head on my knees. I knew mother wanted me out and married. But to try and make me a mistress? I don't understand why she would want that. Gripping the roots of my hair I groan. Lowing myself completely to the ground, I rest my back against the tree. I look up at the sky beginning to calm myself. As I gaze upward I wonder if anyone noticed how pretty the sky is today. The blue is bright and soft all at once and the clouds sail by with sweet serenity. They pass gently over, carrying with them the hopes of the world. My eyes rest upon the wispy tops of the clouds and follow the infinite grays that blend harmoniously with one another. I continue to watch as the clouds continue to drift ever onward slowly darkening. As time goes by the sky goes dreary, slowly turning to dusk. I stand, brushing the dirt off my skirt. Gazing at the sky, I breathe in deeply. Reaching into the pocket of my apron, I pull out a bronze coin. This should be enough for a night at the inn. Tucking the coin back in my pocket, I turn heading back to the village. I drag my feet across the dirt path, kicking up dust as I go. My body jolts, hearing a sudden scream. I clutch my skirt, my knuckles turning white. Picking up my pace, I try and hurry back to the village. "Please, someone help me," a woman's voice calls out. I stop, turning to glance behind me. Looking up at the darkening sky I sigh. Wringing my fingers together, I stare at the ground. I should see if she needs any help. "H-Hello," I call out. "Please, help me," she screams back. Her voice sounds closer than before. I take a step back, my heart thundering. Suddenly the woman burst from the forest, falling to the ground. I jolt at her unexpected appearance. Taking a deep breath, I place a hand over my heart, trying to calm myself. My legs tremble, as I approach the woman. Her brown hair sprawls on the ground, mud matted into it. I crouch down, rolling the woman over. "Are y-you alright?" I ask. Suddenly the woman's eyes open. Her red irises staring back at me. I flinch, pulling my hand away from her. Standing up, I take a step back. Calmly the woman sits up. My muscles tense, as I begin to back away. The woman reaches out, grabbing my ankle. I cry out, as she yanks me to the ground. Holding onto me, she begins to pull me closer. "L-Let go o-of me," I scream. The woman laughs, as she stands up. She continues to hold my leg keeping me from moving. I struggle against her hold, but her grip is too tight. She pulls a cloth from the pocket of her apron. Dragging me by the leg, she pulls me close. Reaching down, she presses the cloth against my nose and mouth. I struggle against her, thrashing my body about. But she holds me down, never loosening her grip. My body begins to go limp, as the world starts to grow hazy. I fight to keep my eyes open, but as the air leaves my body, my eyes close. *** My head throbs, as my eyes open. The space around me is shrouded in darkness. I blink trying to see where I'm at, but I still can't. A cloth shoved in my mouth keeps me from speaking. I shift, my are brushing against someone next to me. I jolt, feeling the heat from another person. I struggle against the rope that holds me but to no avail. The skin on my wrist burns, as I try to break free. Tears begin to form in my eyes, as my heart starts thundering. I breathe in sharply through my nose, trying to calm myself. Muffled cries escape me as I continue to struggle. *** My eyes meet Pyotr’s deep orange ones. I can feel my chest tighten as I think back to that day. “I-I was returning to my village a-around dusk. I had heard a-a woman calling out for h-help, so I-I went to see if she was alright. But t-the woman was bait, and ended up capturing me,” I tell him."I did not think they would use other humans as bait," Pyotr sighs. "I-I don't think the woman was human, s-she had red eyes," I tell him. Pyotr's face twists in disgust. Sighing, he runs a hand through his hair. "You were attacked by a sire vampire," he explains. I furrow my brows together, tilting my head. "What is a sire vampire?" I ask. Pyotr tips his head upward, tapping his fingers on the table. His eyes meet mine then he looks away. "Blood Fae have many unique abilities, though some we are better off without. If a blood Fae bites another creature and injects them with venom. That Fae can turn that being into a sire vampire. Sire vampires are slaves to the blood Fae. Once turned they lose all free will, and cannot disobey an order from their sire," he explains. My blood chills, as a shiver runs through me. I stare down at my lap, twisting my fingers together. I never knew they could have such control over another being. How scary. "To have that kind of c
Pyotr My body relaxes into the hug after several seconds. My tense muscles begin to loosen. Clara rests her head on my shoulder, soft cries escape her lips. I rub my hand in a circular motion on her back. This is exactly why I need to stop Tatiana's group. So people like Clara are no longer hurt. Clara lifts her head from my shoulder, her grassy green eyes meet my own. I am caught by the beauty of her eyes. The green is deep like an endless field. Her thick lashes blink slowly releasing tears. I reach out smoothing Clara's wild red hair before standing up. I hold my hand out, helping to pull her to her feet. Reaching into my back pocket I pull out a handkerchief and hand it to her. Tentatively she reaches out her pale, boney fingers taking the handkerchief. I watch as she dries her blotchy face when the material. Her cheeks blushed red, as she stares at the floor. Her green eyes, hooded by her dark red lashes. I bid Alexei and Clara goodbye before heading back to my office. The long corridors of my mansion linger in silence. I sigh walking slowly through them. So many years have gone by and yet I have still barely achieved anything. I clench my fists together in frustration. My steady pace never slows as start to reach my office. Seeing the black oak door come into sight I stop, reaching out to open it. My fingers brush the cool metal handle as I push the door open crossing the threshold. Alina stands behind my desk chair waiting for me. Her eyes narrow as I step into the room. "It seems you took your time eating, master," eludes. "I showed Miss Clara around the mansion," I tell her. Alina brushes a hand through her hair, letting out a soft sigh. The moonlight filtering in through the window behind my desk dances across her charcoal skin. Moving to pull my chair out for me Alina speaks once more. "Are you sure it is a good idea to involve a hu
Clara My fingers tremble as I sort through the herbs the doctor told me to. The doctor stands next to me filling glass bottles with various medicines. His haunting white eyes drift over to me, watching as I work. His charcoal, white-clawed finger reaches out grabbing the feverfew in front of me. "If you mix the feverfew with lavender you can make a tea that helps with pain and inflammation," he tells. I look up at him my eyes meeting his eyes. He stares down at me from the bridge of his glasses. "Would y-you like me to start preparing the tea doctor?" I ask. "Alexei," he says. My face scrunches in confusion. "W-what?" I question. "My name is Alexei, not Doctor," he states. "Oh, m-my apologies Sir Alexei. Shall I get started on the t...tea?" I ask. "Yes, make sure you use the clean water in the tub over there," he tells me, pointing to a water basin. I nod and begin to prep the tea. My hands burn from small abrasions
I have spent days adjusting to my new life at Shade Manor. Pyotr has been busy preparing to send the other humans back. So we've seen very little of each other, though he makes the effort to escort me to breakfast every morning. I would like to see more of Pyotr, but he is just so busy. I jolt when someone taps me on the shoulder. Turning to look behind me, my eyes meet Alexei's. He arches a brow while staring me down and I see his left ear twitch. "What has you so lost in thought?" He asks. "O-Oh, I was just t-thinking of Lord Pyotr. H...He's been quite busy lately hasn't h-he," I comment. Alexei rolls his eyes, moving his hand from my shoulder to fold his arms. "You want to know who else is quite busy...me. Now get back to work before I send you out of my ward. You are not much help sitting there spacing out," Alexei barks. I flinch at his harsh tone. Adverting my gaze I stare down at the bandages in front of me. "Sorry, I...I'll get back t
A frosty chill blows over my body causing me to shiver. The cool air is filled with the sound of chattering people as we prepare to leave the Shadow Moore. I jump when I feel something touch my shoulder. Looking behind me I see Pyotr. His dark hair is tied neatly into a low ponytail. He's wearing a white tunic with a red vest tucked into black pants. Pyotr smiles at me, the moonlight glinting off his orange eyes makes them glow. "Are you ready, this will be the last time you can see your family for a while," he asks. I smile casting my eyes down. "I...I left once, I'm n-not afraid to d-do it again," I reply. Pyotr furrows his brows in confusion. "Do you count your kidnapping as leaving?" He questions. Lifting my gaze from the ground, I glance back up at Pyotr. "No, I-I don't count that. I l...left home shortly before I was t-taken," I tell him. "Well, hopefully, you can find some closure after your trip back home," he says. I sm
Warm sunlight leaks in through the carriage window. I breathe in the light crisp air as I open my eyes. I blink several times trying to adjust to the unexpected light. "I see you are finally awake," I hear Alina say across from me. Sitting up I stretch my arms before glancing over at her. Alina sits tall and straight in her seat eyes fixed forward. "H-How long was I asleep?" I ask. "For a couple of hours. While you were out we passed through the Shadow Moore boundaries and will soon be in Samirya," she informs me. "I see, have t-the drivers taken any breaks during this t...time?" I ask. "You mean the coachman? They have not rested yet, it is imperative that we keep on track," she tells me. I nod, but before I can reply Alina speaks again. "Actually you are right, we are going to need a break to change forms," she says thoughtfully. I blink at her questioningly, tilting my head slightly. "Change forms?" I ask. "Yes, we shades
I close my eyes while a sigh slips past my lips. Wiping my sweaty palms on my dress I stand up, my legs trembling. Alina stares at me a moment before standing up. "Are you alright?" She asks softly. Scrunching my hands in the skirt of my dress I cast my eyes down. "I'm j-just nervous is a...all," I tell her. "What do you have to be so nervous about?" She wonders. "My mother is r-rather intimidating and w-well we argued the l...last time we saw each other," I explain. "She should be rather happy to see you then, should she not?" She raises a brow at me. As Alina talks she opens the carriage door stepping out and I follow her. "I should h-hope so," I respond to her. I take in my surroundings watching as more people pour out from the parked carriages. They are all smiling, clearly relieved to be home. Though the only thing running through my mind is how my mother is sure to react. I ran away before she could sell me off. She's going
I bite my lip casting my eyes down, Alina steps to the side glancing at me. Slowly I shift my gaze towards her offering a stiff smile before looking back at Mother. Mother's brown eyes scrutinize me and I feel myself shrinking back. I inhale deeply taking a step towards her. "I will b-be staying with the l...lord who saved my life from now on," I tell her. Mother's face strains before she lets out a choked laugh. "Clara I can imagine what a lord would want with you. And my dear you are better off with me and the arrangements I have made." My face burns red at her words as I take a step back. Wiping my wet palms on my skirt I take in a breath. "I-I am not bedding the lord," I squeak in bewilderment. I side-eye Alina and watch as her body stiffens. She covers her face with her hand attempting to hold back her laughter. I look back at Mother who stares at me with a raised brow. "If you are not bedding the lord now the time will come. Girls like yo
