Chapter Five
Desperate Search
Stefano's eyes scanned the deserted streets, night after night with his heart racing with worries of not seeing Teresa. He couldn't really tell what was happening to him but only Teresa could make him feel this way. He knew she would have come looking for him if she was safe, there was something about her disappearance and it's been two months already without a glimpse of her or even her friend, Louisa. Stefano's anxiety kept on growing with each passing day.
“Where was she? Has something happened to her?”
Stefano's mind was filled with so many worst-case scenarios that he thought could possibly happen to Teresa. He thought about the rival gangs, the police, and the countless dangers lurking in the shadows that had probably seen him and Teresa together. Sadly he doesn't know her name, just a description of how she looks and her unique eyes was the only information he has about finding her. He didn't want to have the public search for her, so as not to put her in any danger if she was in one already.
He had to find her. No matter what it took him and with so much wisdom.
Stefano held a meeting with his gangmen that Vincent helped gather together, mobilizing them to search for Teresa as subtly as possible. They scoured the streets, checked the hospitals, and even contacted the local police even though they didn't get to know her name.
But there was no sign at all of Teresa, even though Stefano found it hard to believe he could take so long tracking a person in the community due to his status.
As the sun began to go down, Stefano's worries turned to desperation as he felt she had probably been kidnapped by a rival gang. At this point he would do anything to find her, to keep her safe.
Unknowingly to Stefano, Teresa, and Louisa were being held back in the convent, detained by the sisters for sneaking out some months ago.
Sister Margaret’s expression had been so stern on Teresa even as she and Louisa begged consistently for a pardon.
"Teresa, you know the rules. You can't just leave the convent without permission." She always says regardless of her teary eyes Teresa.
One of the nuns approached them with their meals and Teresa looked down, shamefaced. "I'm sorry, Mother. I just needed to get out of here."
Sister Maria's eyes softened. "I know you're struggling, Teresa and it's pretty hard for you and Louisa. But you just have to follow the rules, we can't bend the verdicts for your sake. The rules were made for your safety."
Teresa nodded, feeling trapped and helpless. She had no idea that Stefano had been searching for her, that he would go to great lengths just to find her.
Stefano became strained from the search and asked that he and his gang retreat to their base.

Days went by and the detention for Teresa and Louisa was finally over. They were now free to roam about the convent and resume their duties. It was as though they had just won a lottery. Teresa was so overjoyed as they ushered them out of the detention area and asked that they return to their rooms.
Teresa was finally happy to be free but she still wanted freedom beyond the walls of the convent and desperately wanted to see Stefano.
“Teresa, are you good?” Louisa asked.
“Yes, I am. Thank you.” Teresa answered keeping a straight face.
“Ain't you happy we are finally free from detention? What's wrong?” Louisa felt concerned.
“Can't you see everything is wrong? Is this what we call freedom? It's been three months and more I haven't set my eyes on him and you expect me to be fine?” Teresa blotted out.
Louisa became frightened at the tone of her voice as she hadn't heard Teresa speak in that manner before.
“I am sorry, okay! Go get some rest.” Teresa said as she gave a fake smile and headed for her room.
The fear of leaving the convent gripped Teresa. Three months was a lot for her to handle and she couldn't imagine herself going back there due to another offence.
But the thoughts of Stefano lingered in her mind and she was willing to take another risk to see him.
*******
A few hours later, Mother Superior was going through the convent files and decided to see Teresa. She heard a loud knock on her door while she cleaned her dusty room.
“Who is it?”
“My Child….” Mother Superior responded.
Everyone could recognise Mother Superior’s voice even the newest in the convent.
“You may come in.” Teresa politely answered.
They exchanged pleasantries, as Mother Superior sat by the chair in the room.
I am happy you have been released, sorry you had to go through all that. Rules here are rules for all, no one is excluded and you should know that by now.
Teresa remained mute as she stared at her.
It's just a month to your 26th birthday, and it's time for you to make a choice.
“A choice?”
“Yes my child, on the 26th birthday of every sister in this convent, they are asked to choose if they would love to stay back and become a nun or they would love to have their freedom.”
“Wait! Mother Superior, did I just hear right? Like totally free from the walls of the convent.” Teresa asked in shock.
Mother Superior nodded her head in affirmation as she handed over the file to Teresa to think about it and make her choice.
“I would sign it now and have thought about this all my life. I need my freedom, Mother Superior.” Teresa said as tears of joy rolled down her cheeks.
“You can go ahead and sign the document.”
Teresa scribbled the pen over the paper and signed as she handed back the file to Mother Superior.
“In a month, you would be out of the convent as you have decided.” Mother's superior said as she stood up and took her leave.
“I will be free, finally.”
Teresa shouted and danced for joy for it was a dream come through regardless of what was lurking outside behind these walls.
Guillermo was jealous of the power Stefano was wielding and saw that he was in a vulnerable state, in search of a strange girl. He felt that was the perfect time to talk his brother into dropping his power as he was incapable at the moment. But he needed an idea that could drive his brother to the point of transferring his authority.“I must go meet Lucas, he would just know the right thing for me to do.”Guillermo thought to himself as he set out for the Morano's gang base at dusk so he wouldn't be seen by any of the KING gang members. He journeyed discreetly and met with Lucas, the Morano's gang leader who was a betrayer of his dad. Lucas was once his late dad's best friend.Guillermo got to their base and entered through the narrow gate, they welcomed him into the inner chambers where Lucas dwells.“I have been expecting you, son,” Lucas said as Guillermo approached him.“Expecting me?” Guillermo asked in shock.“Yes, of course, you may have your seat.”Guillermo, still in shock, s
Stefano was in shock as he headed back to the base with the remaining of his gang members. He spoke to no one and turned deaf ears to everyone as well. Vincent was really worried and spoke all manner of appraising words to Stefano but they all kept falling like a pack of cards.Guillermo noticed Stefano and the gang members approach the gate and he was so shocked his brother made it back alive. He thought Lucas would kill him but it seemed as though Stefano had conquered. Guillermo walked to Stefano trying to greet him. Stefano pushed him away in disgust as he didn't want to talk to anyone.“What's the matter?” Guillermo asked as Stefano walked past him.Everyone was quiet as well as they watched Stefano head for his inner chamber.“What's going on here?” Guillermo asked more curiously.“It was all your fault,” Vincent replied in anger.“How dare you?” Guillermo raged as he walked closer to Vincent.“You can't do anything to me, and I am not afraid of you. You are so much unlike your
It was a very drowsy morning in the convent and almost everyone was still fast asleep. Seeing that everyone was tired and there wasn't enough food to go around for breakfast, Mother Superior decided to summon sister Maria.“You sent for me, Godmother.” Sister Maria asked in affirmation.“Yes I did, I would love you to go to the marketplace and get some food.” Mother Superior said.Without further discussion, Sister Maria agreed to go to the market to get some food. She went almost immediately and as she approached the market, she heard people wailing and crying. She decided to choose a hideout to view what was happening carefully and quietly. She saw the people living around the market being terrorized. She also realised it was Stefano's men.“What's going on? Why are they rough handling the people?” Maria asked herself in so much pity. She decided to stay in the hideout and watch carefully to at least have a grasp of what was going on. The mass terror of the people was quite alarmin
Teresa ran as fast as she could till she located the house where Mother Superior directed her. She got to the door and stood there for some minutes to catch her breath before she finally knocked.“Who is there?” A woman inside the house voiced out.“It's Teresa, from Mother Superior.”The woman immediately rushed to open the door for Teresa as she asked her to hurry inside. She handed over a cup of water to Teresa and offered her a seat.“I heard all that had happened to you, Teresa.” Mrs Rachel said as she gave a huge sigh.Teresa felt sad and didn't know the best reply she could give at the moment.“How long am I going to stay here?” “For just a few days, Teresa. There are plans to take you out of the city to a safer place. My house isn't safe as well.”Teresa bowed her head in disappointment as she began to cry. She felt like her world was falling apart. She wanted freedom from the convent but not something like this.Mrs Rachel walked towards where Teresa sat and parted her shoul
Teresa became scared to the wits. She stood in a position and held her breath as Guillermo and Stefano drew closer towards her direction to know who was also with them in the woods.“I won't hurt you, I promise. I just need to know who is there.” Stefano lied as he echoed the words loudly.Teresa knew now more than ever that if she surrendered she would likely be dead by morning. She could see Stefano five feet away from where she hid herself but still chose to stay firm and hold her breath.“My lord, I don't think there is anyone here. I really haven't heard any movement in the woods since we came here.” One of the gang members said.“Same here, I believe it was probably the wind.” Another gang member chipped in.“Alright then let's head back to KING,” Stefano said as he turned back so they could leave.Shortly after they left for KING and Teresa could finally release her breath. She began painting so hard but was still shocked as regards what she just found out. She had a mixed feel
Teresa"Good morning dear? Are you feeling alright?" Mrs Rachael asked her calmly whilst she opened the door to her rooms.Teresa kept her eyes closed, she wasn't feeling well enough to come to terms with her reality. Last night had really been a shocker for her, she had hardly slept after listening to what Stefano had said about her.The words calmly resounded in her head, how badly he wanted to kill her, his words had truly broken her heart. It made her understand just how lonely and broke she was in this world. For a moment she had even considered killing herself, ending her pain and sorrow all at once, no one would miss her, in fact isn't that what they all wanted?Perhaps only people at the church might miss her but that was about it. Yet she lacked the courage to do anything to end her life. It was indeed a sad situation. She had thought endlessly about what to do, where to go? Who to meet? She has no doubt that Mother Supreme had already been approached by KING. She was so sure

Teresa Ellis took a quick gaze out of the convent's stained-glass window, her thoughts began to drift deeply to the world beyond the sacred walls. As a novice nun that she became not by choice but by fate, she was expected to devote herself to prayers and service which her heart never agreed to because she yearned for a life of freedom and adventures. The Convent was situated in the heart of East Harlem and it was a sanctuary for the community. Teresa's mother was a devout Catholic and that was one of the reasons why the convent chose to nurture Teresa after her parents’ tragic demise. The sisters had now become Teresa's family but she couldn't just shake off the feeling that her life was meant for more beyond the Convent. As she began to ponder her future, a soft knock interrupted her thoughts. It was Sister Margaret, the convent's wise and compassionate leader. Teresa replied that she could enter the room."Teresa, My child, I need to speak with you," Sister Margaret said as her war

It was a very gloomy but cold evening for Teresa and it's been days since she last saw Stefano. She has had so many failed attempts to leave the convent. Their desperation for Teresa to see him has now grown to be a curse rather than a blessing as it affected her mood in the process. Only Louisa could best relate to the mood swings Teresa had been having all day.Louisa began talking to Teresa, sharing some beautiful childhood moments with her but Teresa seemed to give deaf ears to all she had been saying as her mind had already journeyed in the thought of Stefano.“Teresa you can't continue like this,” Louisa asked with so much concern.“I am doing fine, Louisa. It's just one of those things.” Teresa immediately replied with a low tone.“One of those things? Teresa, I know you better than anyone. I love it the few times I have seen you happy and I desire to see more of that.”Teresa remained mute as Louisa kept on talking and pouring out her displeasure around her mood swings.“Shoul
