My Husband is Great

Terry and Darren arrive right on time. I lead them to the dining room and point to the four seats on my left. Terry sits in the chair closest to me, talking loudly and his newest wife quietly sits next to him. I feel bad for the woman. Even with all her makeup and fancy jewelry, I can tell she’s scared. Darren’s wife is much different. She’s taller and stronger than her husband and is known to handle all his money matters.

Sergio and Dimitri sit to my right, leaving the seat beside me empty. They know it’s for Nila, and even though she’s not joining us, neither of them dares to sit there. My dumb uncle, who arrives last, doesn’t seem to understand. He goes straight for Nila’s seat. Luckily for him, he looks up just before sitting. When he sees the look on my face, he quickly changes his mind and sits next to Dimitri.

I nod at Tina and Katya as they approach the table and start serving drinks. We’ve had dinners like this many times, so they know exactly what to do.

ADRIAN My head snaps up when I see Nila standing in the doorway, looking at me with one eyebrow raised. She’s wearing the short black dress—the one I told her not to wear for this dinner.“You have a fever. Go back to your room,” I snap.Terry tries to squirm free, so I push the knife closer to his skin, just a tiny bit away from cutting him.“I’m fine, sweetheart. Can I join you? I see you saved me a spot, and I’m starving,” Nila says. She walks toward the table, her heels clicking on the floor with each step. She stops right between me and the empty seat, leans in to kiss my cheek quickly, then sits down.“You must be Mr. Terry. I’ve heard you own the biggest casino in the city. Maybe Adrian can take me there one day, and you can show us around. I’ve never been to a casino,” she says with a sweet smile at Terry, then turns to me. “Honey, could you please move the knife? I’m trying to have a conversation here.”Terry stares at her for a moment before laughing loudly. I slowly lower

He watches me with his eyes as I walk to my workspace and start getting my paints ready on the table next to the easel. I need to buy more black paint. I’m almost out of my last tube since I used most of it for the big guy. I could also use more red paint. Just as I dip my brush into the paint, I feel Adrian’s lips on the soft spot at the back of my neck.“You forgot something,” he whispers, burying his face in my hair.“Oh? And what might that be?”“A kiss.”I drop the brush and slowly turn around to find him standing right over me. I don’t flinch, and I’m not scared. Having him this close, towering over me, doesn’t bother me anymore. I don’t even remember when that changed.“You’re so demanding,” I say, cupping his face and pulling him in for a kiss.“I know.” He kisses me again. “Eat your lunch. Call me if you need anything.”When Adrian leaves, I get back to work, only taking breaks when I need the bathroom. By lunchtime, I’ve finished another piece. Brando is getting restless, h

Behind me, Leonard mumbles, “Idiot.”I smile and walk back to Adrian’s suite.Once inside, I grin, grab a bag of dog treats from the kitchen counter, and give Brando double the usual amount.“Good boy.”At least a dozen outfits are spread out on my bed as I think about which one to wear for tonight’s exhibition. I barely finished the last painting in time. Mike nearly had a panic attack when I told him I needed to make changes on the big guy and wouldn’t send it until this morning. He complained for at least ten minutes about not being able to add it to the catalog. Honestly, I’m glad. I want to see Adrian’s reaction when he sees it for the first time.I choose black leather pants and a green silk shirt, then put them on the chair, leaving the rest of the clothes on the bed. I haven’t slept in this room for a while. All my things are here, but other than sleeping in Adrian’s bed, I don’t plan to move in with him. Okay, that sounds weird since, well, I do live with him.“This is so wei

ADRIAN'S POV I walk closer to the painting and lean back to look at it. The lights in the gallery are dim, with a single spotlight above each painting. The lighting works well with the dark feel of Nila’s art. I looked at most of the paintings when they were at my place, but seeing them like this makes them feel even more unsettling. The painting in front of me shows a pale skinned woman with long, dark hair, holding a piece of cloth close to her chest. Behind her, there are tall, faceless figures with their hands stretched out toward her. Everything is in shades of gray and black, except for the dress she’s holding, which is bright green. Before I move on to the next painting, I look over at the other side of the room. Nila is standing there with a short young man who has a receding hairline. Mike, her agent and boss. They’re talking, and I watch their body language for a few moments. Nila looks up, sees me watching, and smiles. She says something to Mike and walks over to me. I can

“Sally says that an anonymous buyer bought all the paintings!” Nila says as soon as I get close. I almost can’t keep my face serious. “What a selfish jerk.” “Exactly.” She nods. “Good thing I told Mike to mark the big one as not for sale right away.” “Why?” She gives me a secret smile. “That one is for you.” I look at her, my teeth clenched. “Where is it?” “In the next room, around the corner, but… where are you going, Adrian? Wait!” I ignore her and push my chair as fast as it can go toward the room she pointed to. We agreed she wouldn’t show the self-portrait in the exhibition, and I’m not going to let anyone see it. It’s coming down now, or I’ll make someone regret it. “Adrian!” Nila’s heels click behind me as she tries to follow. “It’s not the one where I’m naked!” she calls after me. Suddenly, the whole gallery goes silent. I stop and turn to find at least fifteen people, including Nila’s parents, staring at her, shocked. Nila doesn’t notice, and comes to stand

Still nothing,” Adrian says. “Are you sure your uncle tried to kill you?” I ask, and his fingers stop on my neck. “It wasn’t that hard to guess, Adrian.” “Yes. That’s why I don’t want you near him unless I’m with you.” “What would he do to me? I’m a nobody after all i' ll be gone in a few months anyway,” but I couldn’t say it. It hurts too much to think about, so I ignore it. I’m really good at ignoring things I don’t want to think about. “You’re my wife. Hurting you would hurt me.” Yeah. I guess having the pakhan’s wife killed right under his nose wouldn’t look good to his partners and subordinates. “I’ll be careful,” I say. “Good.” He kisses my shoulder again. “Leave that in the fridge. Get changed. I’m taking you to one of my clubs.” “One of…?” I stare at him and laugh. “Man, I did well. I’m such a gold digger. My mom will be so happy when she hears this.” “Why?” “She always told me to marry well, among other things. I guess I can cross that off the list.” “And what are

I’m not in the mood for business tonight. He can talk to Pavel later.Nila is sitting close to me, holding a glass of wine and watching the people around us. She was talking a lot when we arrived, but she stopped a few minutes ago. I wonder what she’s thinking. Our car stops in front of the house, and at the same time, another car arrives. Leonard steps out of the back seat and looks at us. His eyes meet Adrian’s, who is standing next to me. It’s dark, but the lights from the streetlamps show the surprise on Leonard’s face, which quickly turns to a look of pure hate. He quickly fixes his expression to smile and walks toward us.“Well, this is a surprise. I’m happy to see you’re up and about, Adrian. Really.”“Is that so, Uncle?” A small smile appears on Adrian’s face. He looks calm, but I can see that he’s holding onto his crutches tightly. Even though his leg hurts, he hides it well.“Nila, I’m tired. Can we go upstairs?” I say, then turn to Leonard and smile sweetly. “I need to do my skin routine before I go to bed, and it takes at least an hour.”Leonard gives me a look like he’s annoyed but doesn’t say anything. And now the hardest part. “Hand on my neck, Adrian.”“Nila.”“Please.”His right hand slowly moves over my chest, then higher, until it’s on my neck. I hold my breath. I won’t look, but I’ll be there.” “No,” I say. “Yes.” “This is silly.” “There’s nothing silly about me worrying for your safety. I can’t forget the day when the man Leonid hired tried to hurt you. ADRIAN'S POV He doesn't say anything for a little while, just staring at me with his fingers holding the back of my head."Marry me," he says, "and I will stop the war."Nila’s eyes get wide when she hears me. She’s probably wondering if I’m serious, and I am. I will do whatever it takes to bring her back."You’re forcing me to marry you. Again."It's not really a question, but I answer anyway. I want to wipe the tears away, and I tell myself that this will be the last time she cries because of me.I need her to say yes. I can't stand the thought of spending another night without her next to me. She took my heart when she left, and if she says no, she can keep it.
