Kayla's POV

Kain’s arm slipped around my waist as if it had always belonged there, his grip firm but casual.

“Smart choice,” he murmured, lips close to my ear. A shiver ran through me, but I forced a smile.

I had to convince Kain I was on his side to unravel the chaos I created. The King wouldn't understand my intentions now, but it had to be done.

“You look a bit pale. I know this is a lot to take in so take your time” Kain implored, leading me down the hall.

“No… I mean… Can I stay in your room?” I muttered trying to make my tone sound casual.

“Why?” Kain questioned, eyeing me suspiciously.

“The King is angry, he might try something” I whispered, feigning fear.

“You don't have to worry about him, he wouldn't hurt you” Kain tried convincing me but I persisted.

“You don’t understand,” I muttered, feigning a tremor in my voice. “I’m scared to go back to my quarters... the King could be there waiting…” My voice trailed off, leaving the implication hanging between us.
