I turned so I could see the man. Joy and horror filled me in equal measure. It was him. It was Kalen. He was really alive and here now. Yet I had to admit he wasn’t quite how I remembered. His once smiling, warm face was now hardened and cold. His blue eyes were dark and stormy, promising violence and death.
“Well, well, what a surprise. Kalen, you have a knack for survival.” Carl let out a derisive laugh. “How dare you, a lowly rogue, come to my territory?” his voice was loud, but I felt the tip of the knife quiver against my neck.
“You know why I’m here,” Kalen demanded. His voice rang out through the room and everyone fell silent. Most of the pack pressed themselves to the walls of the room, barely breathing as if they didn’t dare make a noise unless he’d strike them down.
“I hope not,” Carl said with a laugh that made Kalen snarl at him.
A hint of uncertainty filled Carl’s eyes at the sound of it. He held up his hand, lifting his chin.
“That’s far enough. This doesn’t need to get physical. If you came for her, then you’ll want to rethink that,” Carl told him, nudging me with his foot.
“Don’t touch her,” Kalen demanded in a growl.
“Why not? Oh, see, here is the thing, Kalen. She’s mine now. Alyssa is my wife,” Carl replied, grabbing my hand and holding it up so Kalen could see the ring.
Oh, damn the ring.
I jerked away from him. I shook my head at Kalen, again trying to speak, to explain, but still nothing came out. Kalen’s eyes widened. I see the hurt, betrayal, and anger filling them.
“Alyssa,” Kalen said. The growl in his voice softened as he looked at me. “You married him? Why?” Pain and pleading filled his eyes as he looked at me, begging for me to tell him it was all a lie.
God, I wanted to tell him everything. I wanted to explain myself, yet my voice was silenced. I tried to explain, show him the pain in my eyes as I shook my head. Oh, please, Kalen, I thought. It’s not like that.
“Why won’t you answer me?” Kalen demanded, his voice becoming darker and more dangerous. A chill ran down my spine and a hint of fear trickled through me at the hardened expression on his face.
“You have no place to make demands here, rogue! This is pack business. Leave now or else,” an elder demanded. He walked over to stand next to Carl.
Kalen turned to the elder. “Pack business? Is this how packs operate?” he asked as he walked up to the elder. “Well, this is what I think of your pack business,” he said and, with no warning, slammed his fist into the older werewolf’s face. My eyes widened as I watched him crumple to the floor.
“How dare you strike an elder of this pack? Soldiers! Get him! Apprehend him so that he may face judge-” another elder yelled then like the first fell when Kalen punched him.
Kalen turned on Carl and walked towards him. “How dare you marry my woman?” he said through gritted teeth.
“Don’t blame me,” Carl said with a smug expression on his face as he held up his hands. “She came onto me, practically dragged me into her bed.”
My head jerked to Carl. What was he saying? I tried to mouth ‘no,’ but Kalen wasn’t looking at me, but Carl.
“Whenever I brought you up, she was like ‘Kalen who?’ Sorry, man, I just gave her what she wanted.”
No. No. No!
The grin on Carl’s face grew. “You never told me how eager she is to please her men. Damn! I have never seen a woman try so hard.”
I shook my head, but neither of them were paying attention to me. So I tried to hit Carl to shut him up, but Lena grabbed me. “Oh, this is going to be fun,” she chuckled in my ear.
“Hey, did she ever do a little strip tease for you too,” Carl goaded and I tried to get Lena off of me, but her nails dug into my skin. It seemed Carl wasn’t only goading Kalen, but her too. Every word that came out of his mouth made her nails dig into me deeper.
Carl whistled and shook his head. “God, she’s quite the minx. It was hot.” He licked his lips as if he was reliving whatever he imagined I did for him. Disgust filled me and I wanted to get sick.
Kalen’s eyes darkened until they were almost black. His expression was wild, almost feral, as he approached Carl without saying a word.
Several of our warriors jumped to Carl’s defense, and Carl laughed. “Now you’re not going to be so tough,” Carl told him.
The first warrior was really good. My father had chosen him to stay behind to protect me, or he was until his loyalty shifted to Carl. He struck out at Kalen, who blocked him with the ease of an adult humoring a child. With two punches, Kalen had the warrior down on his knees and without a second thought, Kalen twisted his neck, breaking it. The warrior fell to the floor, eyes lifeless. Kalen didn’t even seem to notice as he took another step towards Carl.
Another warrior blocked his path, and the same happened. Kalen killed him in a matter of seconds. He didn’t even break a sweat as he took another step towards Carl. More warriors jumped to Carl’s defense, and Kalen killed each one of them with such grace and precision. All the while, his eyes were on Carl. It was the most terrifying thing I’d ever seen. Kalen looked like some nightmarish warrior, bent on the death of everyone in front of him.
“Stop him,” Carl demanded, taking a step back. “Stop-”
Kalen grabbed his shirt and pulled him close as he slammed his fist into Carl’s face. Carl’s eyes seemed to unfocus, but surprisingly, he was quick to recover. He struggled, trying to free himself and put distance between Kalen and him, but Kalen wouldn’t allow it. Kalen hit him over and over. Carl’s blood flew as Kalen continued to beat on him.
Lena screamed in horror. “Stop it! You’ll kill him,” she shouted. Letting me go, she raced over to them and tried to pry Kalen off of Carl. With a growl, he shoved her off him, but she seemed to break whatever fury he was in because Kalen stopped hitting him.
He stood and stretched his neck, flinging the blood off his hands, then his eyes fell on me.
Whatever joy I felt at seeing him alive went cold. There was no warmth, no kindness. Just rage and violence. Slowly, Kalen walked over to me and my heart sank. I tried to get words out, but still I couldn’t make a sound. My heart pounded hard in my chest as he kneeled down next to me.
So quickly I didn’t see him move, Kalen grabbed me by the throat and pulled me close to his face. The iron tang of blood filled my nose. I saw none of the love we once shared, only ferocity. Was he going to kill me, too?
“How long did it take you to just forget about me, huh? A day? A week or maybe a month?” Kalen demanded. Knowing it was useless, I still tried to speak, to tell him. I’d never forgotten him. Yet all I did was move my mouth, nothing came out.
“Answer me,” he shouted.
Fear filled me and tears fell down my cheeks. I couldn’t give him what he wanted, no matter how desperately I wanted to. I lowered my gaze, no longer able to look into the gaping void that was now his eyes. It hurt too much. What happened to him?
Kalen’s grip tightened on my throat as he growled so loudly at me, it sounded more like a roar. When I still said nothing, he shook me so hard my head snapped back and forth as he shouted, “Answer me, damn you!”
Kalen’s grip on my neck as he shook me hurt, but my heart hurt more. It tore apart and sadness filled every pore of me. This is all I was. Tragedy. My heart raced and I couldn’t breathe. Darkness filled my vision, and I welcomed oblivion.
Kalen's back! What do you all think of him? What's he going to do next?
I tried to open my eyes, but it hurt, so I closed them again. Actually, everything hurt. The smell of disinfectant and medicine filled my nose. So I wasn’t dead? That fact disappointed part of me somewhat.“Yes, her throat is healed,” someone with a muffled voice said in my ears.As my head cleared, the voice or well voices became clearer. Once more, I tried to open my eyes. After a moment, I adjusted to the lighting. I was in an unfamiliar rectangular room with several empty beds. Where was I?I turned my head to the other side and saw an unfamiliar man next to me and behind him was Kalen. So many nights I had dreams like this. I couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t a hallucination. Kalen was alive! He came back! I knew it. Tears ran down my face and I struggled to get up from the bed. I didn’t care about anything else but him being alive. I rushed to him, throwing my arms around him.“Kalen, You’re alive! You’re really alive,” I said, hugging him. My voice was hoarse and shaking from whate
Kalen dragged me out of the small building and towards another, even smaller one. He pointed to a woman. “You come here and stand here till she comes out. When she’s dressed, bring her to the bonfire.”The woman’s eyes narrowed as she saw me. Distrust and wariness were easy to read in them.“Yes, alpha,” she said, ducking her head and shoved me inside. The door slammed shut behind me with a loud bang. The sudden sound startled me. Instantly, I turned and tried to open it again. I vigorously beat against the closed door, my voice with urgency and entreaty: “Please, let me out!” However, no one answered me.I slipped slowly, like losing support, and I sat slumped on the ground against the door. I looked up and around the room. All sorts of clothes piled up in a mess, if one could call the scraps of cloth clothing. Looking at this, I felt a force in my heart. No way was I going to ‘entertain’ anyone. I looked around the room and saw my salvation, a window. It was small, but I was sure I c
The woman pulled me to my feet and took me into the room, refusing to leave until I got dressed in what Kalen had picked out for me. I gritted my teeth, reminding myself he had my necklace. I undressed and put on the clothes that Kalen chose and tried not to think of how I might look in them. When I finished, the woman led me out of the room; her face was a stoic mask. I had no way of telling if it bothered her I was going to be the ‘entertainment’ or if it was just another day for her.She walked me up to Kalen. “She’s here alpha.”Much like Carl had at my trial, Kalen sat looking like a roman emperor, ready to decide the fates of those beneath him. Four women sat or stood around him, each breathtakingly beautiful. They pawed at him, eagerly awaiting whatever command he would give them.My chest ached with a spark of jealousy that was swallowed by grief. This was just more evidence that the Kalen I knew. The Kalen I loved never existed. This was who he was for real. A rogue. A cruel,
Kalen’s PoVMy heart pounded in my chest as I sprinted through the forest, running along secret trails I knew by heart. No matter how fast I ran, Alyssa still haunted me. Despite how she hurt me, I couldn’t stop desiring her. My body yearned to feel her again, taste her… I growled and pushed myself to run faster. She betrayed me. I had come to see her and then when I heard what was going on; I wanted to save her… Stupid. Shaking my head, I tried to keep my anger in check. Married? Goddess, how could she do that to me? Alyssa claimed she had to? What in the hell could make her marry that jackass? She was lying, playing with me. She had to be, because otherwise, why wouldn’t she just explain everything to me?I wanted to humiliate her tonight, make her feel like she had made me feel. Yet when she took off that shirt and all those bruises… Carl was lucky I didn’t know about them when I was beating his ass or I wouldn’t have stopped. If that wasn’t bad enough, those assholes were looking a
I spent the morning cleaning dishes, doing laundry, and whatever chore it seemed like the rest of the servants didn’t want to do. The other servants avoided me and never spoke to me unless they had to.I don’t know if it was because they knew I was from a pack or because their alpha hated me. I’d never been a social pariah before. That, combined with the loss of my necklace, I was more lonely than I had ever been in my life.I worked by myself, setting up food on a long table. There was an event tonight, as the older woman said, the head servant, I think. But all my minds had already drifted away. Survive, I told myself. This was the only thing I should focus on at present. Get the necklace and find Father. Let Kalen think he had the upper hand. Let him try to tear me down and humiliate me. I would have my justice. However, just as I was about to step out of the hall, the familiar figure broke into my sight. Kalen strode into the room with one of the women he had with him last night.S
Kalen pinned me to the wall, one hand held me by my neck and the other pressed against the wall. His face was mere inches from mine as he accused me of trying to get men’s attention. The pain immediately hit my nerves and left me breathless. My bruised ribs didn’t like Kalen’s rough treatment of me.“Let me go,” I demanded. “You’re hurting me! I have no idea what you’re talking about? I am not doing anything but what you told me.” Placing my hands on his shoulders, I tried to push him back, but he didn’t move an inch.“Don’t play dumb with me,” he growled. “I saw him with you!”What? Was all this about that man who helped me? I swear Kalen almost sounded jealous, but that couldn’t be right. “Thomas?” I said in disbelief. As soon as I said his name, Kalen growled, and his eyes darken.Anger filled me. I was getting tired of men jealously treating me like a thing they owned, and didn’t want anyone else playing with. “Get off me,” I demanded, and tried to push him back again, but he was s
I woke up with a scream. Sweat peppered my entire body. Panic seized me until I recognized the room I was in. It was a storage room in the rogue servants’ building. They refitted it into a bedroom for me to stay in. My nightmares kept the other servants awake, so they moved me to this room to avoid bothering them.Since Carl admitted to what he had done, I had nightmares of Caden’s cries. Every night, I try to get to him before Carl, and every night I fail and can’t save my son. Then I must watch as Carl hurts him and snuffs out his precious life. It all felt so real that my heart was nothing but a gaping, bleeding wound that won’t heal.Setting my feet on the cold cement floor, I leaned forward and buried my hands in my hair. I took a few deep breaths. I felt like I was going to be sick. My chest still hurt, but no longer was it on the side, but more in the middle. I closed my eyes and searched deep inside me.‘Maddie,’ I called out mentally, trying to call out to my wolf. She took my
A mix of emotions flashed over Kalen’s face, all of them too quickly for me to read before his expression hardened.“I don’t allow anyone to take what belongs to me,” he says, then a hint of anger and maybe disgust sparked into his eyes. “Even if I don’t want it anymore.”I gasped, then flinched away from him, my eyes filling with tears. His admission sent pain through me. I stared off to the side, unable to believe that I really was just a thing to him. Something to own, hurt, use or abuse how he wanted. My feelings didn’t matter. That I was a person didn’t matter.Anger replaced the hurt. I wasn’t a thing, but a person! I looked back at Kalen and his expression of cold indifference. Jumping to my feet, I wanted to hit him, hurt him, make him show some kind of emotion. My hands curled into fists, shaking with my fury.Kalen laughed when he saw my expression. “Don’t waste your strength, Alyssa. You can’t do anything more to me, but piss me off and we both know what happens if you do.”
