They forced me into a chair before the elders, with all the prominent figures of the pack behind us. Lena crossed her arms under her chest, smirking at me with menacing glee.
“What is the meaning of this? How could you handcuff Alyssa?” an elder said, looking over at me with concern. I tried to speak, to tell them what Carl was planning, but still I couldn’t utter a sound. He motioned to the guards. “Free her now.”
“Wait, you’re about to know the truth,” Carl looked serious, and the guard ignored the elder’s signal. “We are at war with the rogues. Yesterday, I received the information from the lycan king. He has found proof of a traitor in our pack. Through my own investigation, I found Alyssa has betrayed us,” Carl demanded. Again, I tried to deny it, but no sound came out of me.
Was that his plan? To make me his traitor and replace me with his mistress? I struggled furiously to get out of the handcuffs.
Carl looked at me dead in the eye. “Are you our traitor, Alyssa?”
I stared at him. How dare he?
“How dare you question Alyssa? We watched her grow up...” some elders still wanted to defend me.
“Well, out of all of us, she was the only one,” Carl paused and continued with a blunt, matter-of-fact tone, “in a relationship with a rogue.”
“What?” another elder exclaimed.
“A rogue? Is this true?” One other elder demanded.
Suddenly, all seven elders erupted into a shower of demands and questions. It wasn’t acceptable to associate with a rogue, let alone have a relationship with one. “Just before the war started, Alyssa was dating a man. He turned out to be not only a rogue, but the rogue king’s son! When her bastard child died by the goddess, instead of taking the blame herself, Alyssa blamed the pack doctor and this pack!”
“Proof, what proof do you have of this?” one elder demanded.
Carl held up his hand and Lena gave him a folded piece of paper. “A love letter between her and the rogue king’s son himself,” he said and handed it to the elders.
They read over it and as each of them looked at me, I saw the disgust in their eyes. “Well, girl,” one demanded. “What do you have to say for yourself?”
I tried to speak. To tell them everything that Carl said was a lie. Tears fell from my eyes as not a sound came from my mouth.
“It seems the goddess has taken away her voice,” Carl said with a sneer as he looked over at me.
“The goddess had to know she would only spill lies and try to manipulate this pack even further. She is a snake, poisoning this pack at every turn she takes.”
I shook my head and tried to mime what they did to me, but one elder shook her head. “Look at her, she’s going mad!”
“It doesn’t matter what it is,” yet another demanded. “The goddess clearly has marked her as guilty!”
“Guilty!” another shouted.
“Traitor,” someone yelled.
My eyes widened as I watched the surrounding crowd start to shout, calling me every version of traitor, whore, or lunatic.
Carl held up his hands. “You’re right, all of you are right,” he said. “That’s why we should publicly execute her here and now! What do the elders say?”
“Agreed,” they all demanded.
“And the pack?” Carl said, playing to the crowd. He stood tall like he thought he was some Roman emperor of old, hosting the fights in the coliseum, and everyone seemed more than eager to join him.
“Agreed,” they yelled.
I grit my teeth so tightly my jaw hurt. This couldn’t be happening. This had to be a nightmare, a bad dream. Someone yanked on my hair, and another punched me, making my vision go white.
“What is this? Stop this at once,” one elder demanded, but Carl stopped him.
“No, we should allow this. She betrayed us, and they have a right to get justice for the ones they’ve lost because of her.”
“This is for my son,” someone shouted, and a fist plowed into my stomach.
“My husband,” another screamed, yanking on my hair to punch me in the jaw.
Another followed, and another, and another. Each screaming their pain in my face as they hurt me. I tried to plead my innocence, despite knowing I was mute. No one seemed to care as they continued to hurt me. Eventually, I stopped feeling the hits and only felt pain.
Lena pushed her way through the crowd to stand in front of me. She grabbed my face hard, nails digging into my skin. “See, no one wants or cares about you,” she hissed. “Just a means to an end. That’s all you ever were. I hope it hurts when he cuts your head off.” She let me go with a triumphant smirk, going over to Carl, laying a hand on his arm.
“Alright, enough,” Carl demanded, and everyone backed away. He held up a silver dagger and walked over to me. “Time to meet the goddess’ justice traitor.”
He forced me up onto my knees. Standing behind me, Carl gripped my chin, forcing me to expose my neck. “Any last words?” he asked, then snickered in my ear. “Oh, I guess not.”
I couldn’t believe this was all happening. I couldn’t believe Carl was this monster.
Carl pressed the knife to my throat. “Goodbye, Alyssa,” he said sweetly, shredding my heart to pieces. “I won’t miss you,” he smirked, his eyes shining as if the powerful future was just within his reach. I closed my eyes and a sense of calm washed over me. In killing me, Carl would give me a gift. I would know peace with my son and Kalen. We would be together again. Carl sliced into my neck when a roar broke through the room.
“Get your hands off her,” a deep, sharp tone demanded.
My eyes shot open and my heart stuttered to a stop. I would’ve recognized that voice anywhere. I dreamt of it often. But…it couldn’t be. He was dead.
Carl’s smirk froze on his face. Every trace of his smug assurance evaporated in the moment. “You... you’re alive…” he croaked with astonishment.
Who do you think it is and what does this mean for Alyssa and Carl?
I turned so I could see the man. Joy and horror filled me in equal measure. It was him. It was Kalen. He was really alive and here now. Yet I had to admit he wasn’t quite how I remembered. His once smiling, warm face was now hardened and cold. His blue eyes were dark and stormy, promising violence and death.“Well, well, what a surprise. Kalen, you have a knack for survival.” Carl let out a derisive laugh. “How dare you, a lowly rogue, come to my territory?” his voice was loud, but I felt the tip of the knife quiver against my neck.“You know why I’m here,” Kalen demanded. His voice rang out through the room and everyone fell silent. Most of the pack pressed themselves to the walls of the room, barely breathing as if they didn’t dare make a noise unless he’d strike them down.“I hope not,” Carl said with a laugh that made Kalen snarl at him.A hint of uncertainty filled Carl’s eyes at the sound of it. He held up his hand, lifting his chin.“That’s far enough. This doesn’t need to get p
I tried to open my eyes, but it hurt, so I closed them again. Actually, everything hurt. The smell of disinfectant and medicine filled my nose. So I wasn’t dead? That fact disappointed part of me somewhat.“Yes, her throat is healed,” someone with a muffled voice said in my ears.As my head cleared, the voice or well voices became clearer. Once more, I tried to open my eyes. After a moment, I adjusted to the lighting. I was in an unfamiliar rectangular room with several empty beds. Where was I?I turned my head to the other side and saw an unfamiliar man next to me and behind him was Kalen. So many nights I had dreams like this. I couldn’t believe it. It wasn’t a hallucination. Kalen was alive! He came back! I knew it. Tears ran down my face and I struggled to get up from the bed. I didn’t care about anything else but him being alive. I rushed to him, throwing my arms around him.“Kalen, You’re alive! You’re really alive,” I said, hugging him. My voice was hoarse and shaking from whate
Kalen dragged me out of the small building and towards another, even smaller one. He pointed to a woman. “You come here and stand here till she comes out. When she’s dressed, bring her to the bonfire.”The woman’s eyes narrowed as she saw me. Distrust and wariness were easy to read in them.“Yes, alpha,” she said, ducking her head and shoved me inside. The door slammed shut behind me with a loud bang. The sudden sound startled me. Instantly, I turned and tried to open it again. I vigorously beat against the closed door, my voice with urgency and entreaty: “Please, let me out!” However, no one answered me.I slipped slowly, like losing support, and I sat slumped on the ground against the door. I looked up and around the room. All sorts of clothes piled up in a mess, if one could call the scraps of cloth clothing. Looking at this, I felt a force in my heart. No way was I going to ‘entertain’ anyone. I looked around the room and saw my salvation, a window. It was small, but I was sure I c
The woman pulled me to my feet and took me into the room, refusing to leave until I got dressed in what Kalen had picked out for me. I gritted my teeth, reminding myself he had my necklace. I undressed and put on the clothes that Kalen chose and tried not to think of how I might look in them. When I finished, the woman led me out of the room; her face was a stoic mask. I had no way of telling if it bothered her I was going to be the ‘entertainment’ or if it was just another day for her.She walked me up to Kalen. “She’s here alpha.”Much like Carl had at my trial, Kalen sat looking like a roman emperor, ready to decide the fates of those beneath him. Four women sat or stood around him, each breathtakingly beautiful. They pawed at him, eagerly awaiting whatever command he would give them.My chest ached with a spark of jealousy that was swallowed by grief. This was just more evidence that the Kalen I knew. The Kalen I loved never existed. This was who he was for real. A rogue. A cruel,
Kalen’s PoVMy heart pounded in my chest as I sprinted through the forest, running along secret trails I knew by heart. No matter how fast I ran, Alyssa still haunted me. Despite how she hurt me, I couldn’t stop desiring her. My body yearned to feel her again, taste her… I growled and pushed myself to run faster. She betrayed me. I had come to see her and then when I heard what was going on; I wanted to save her… Stupid. Shaking my head, I tried to keep my anger in check. Married? Goddess, how could she do that to me? Alyssa claimed she had to? What in the hell could make her marry that jackass? She was lying, playing with me. She had to be, because otherwise, why wouldn’t she just explain everything to me?I wanted to humiliate her tonight, make her feel like she had made me feel. Yet when she took off that shirt and all those bruises… Carl was lucky I didn’t know about them when I was beating his ass or I wouldn’t have stopped. If that wasn’t bad enough, those assholes were looking a
I spent the morning cleaning dishes, doing laundry, and whatever chore it seemed like the rest of the servants didn’t want to do. The other servants avoided me and never spoke to me unless they had to.I don’t know if it was because they knew I was from a pack or because their alpha hated me. I’d never been a social pariah before. That, combined with the loss of my necklace, I was more lonely than I had ever been in my life.I worked by myself, setting up food on a long table. There was an event tonight, as the older woman said, the head servant, I think. But all my minds had already drifted away. Survive, I told myself. This was the only thing I should focus on at present. Get the necklace and find Father. Let Kalen think he had the upper hand. Let him try to tear me down and humiliate me. I would have my justice. However, just as I was about to step out of the hall, the familiar figure broke into my sight. Kalen strode into the room with one of the women he had with him last night.S
Kalen pinned me to the wall, one hand held me by my neck and the other pressed against the wall. His face was mere inches from mine as he accused me of trying to get men’s attention. The pain immediately hit my nerves and left me breathless. My bruised ribs didn’t like Kalen’s rough treatment of me.“Let me go,” I demanded. “You’re hurting me! I have no idea what you’re talking about? I am not doing anything but what you told me.” Placing my hands on his shoulders, I tried to push him back, but he didn’t move an inch.“Don’t play dumb with me,” he growled. “I saw him with you!”What? Was all this about that man who helped me? I swear Kalen almost sounded jealous, but that couldn’t be right. “Thomas?” I said in disbelief. As soon as I said his name, Kalen growled, and his eyes darken.Anger filled me. I was getting tired of men jealously treating me like a thing they owned, and didn’t want anyone else playing with. “Get off me,” I demanded, and tried to push him back again, but he was s
I woke up with a scream. Sweat peppered my entire body. Panic seized me until I recognized the room I was in. It was a storage room in the rogue servants’ building. They refitted it into a bedroom for me to stay in. My nightmares kept the other servants awake, so they moved me to this room to avoid bothering them.Since Carl admitted to what he had done, I had nightmares of Caden’s cries. Every night, I try to get to him before Carl, and every night I fail and can’t save my son. Then I must watch as Carl hurts him and snuffs out his precious life. It all felt so real that my heart was nothing but a gaping, bleeding wound that won’t heal.Setting my feet on the cold cement floor, I leaned forward and buried my hands in my hair. I took a few deep breaths. I felt like I was going to be sick. My chest still hurt, but no longer was it on the side, but more in the middle. I closed my eyes and searched deep inside me.‘Maddie,’ I called out mentally, trying to call out to my wolf. She took my
I shook out my fur once I finished shifting. I growled at the woman and stared towards her when Kalen stepped between us.“Remember the child,” Kalen said to me, but he kept his eyes are on the woman. When he spoke again, he was speaking to her. “You aren’t going to escape us. If you run, she’s going to chase you down, and I’ll be right behind her, but not before I yell to the others. Among those others include the rogue king. Now, why don’t you do the best thing, hand the child to me and we can all end this day unharmed.”The woman’s lips curled into a sneer, her grip tightening on the baby in her arms. “No, she’s mine,” the woman insisted again. “James said she was mine now.” I could feel my claws itching to extend, my wolf straining against the reins I barely managed to hold. The child’s scent, innocent, vulnerable, mixed with the sharp tang of fear, and it was all I could do to keep from lunging at the woman and tearing her apart.Kalen didn’t flinch, his voice calm but steel-edge
I leaned against the tree, my arms crossed over my chest, with Kalen next to me. He paced back and forth nervously. We were far enough from the building to be safe, but close enough to see whoever came out.It had taken the lycan king’s trackers and the rogue scouts two more days to finish their intel on the place. While I couldn’t go inside with them, Kalen’s father let me go with the team. That was good enough for me, or it was until I heard the fighting. The rogue king had made it very clear this morning. I was not allowed to set a single foot inside that building. The distant guttural growls echoed through the woods, sending a chill down my spine. I clenched my fists, forcing myself to stay rooted to the spot. Kalen’s pacing quickened, his boots crunching against the frost-covered ground.“They’ve got it under control,” he muttered, though the tremor in his voice betrayed his doubt.I didn’t respond. My ears strained to pick up every sound from the skirmish going on inside the bui
I stepped out of the shower and dried myself off. Danielle had finally started moving on from meditation and we began doing some exercises. I didn’t know if it was because of the baby or because I was out of shape, but I found it all exhausting. When I stepped out of the shower, I saw Kalen sitting on the bed. As soon as he saw me, he stood. “Hey, Dad says he has an update for us.”“Really?” I said, unable to hide my excitement. “Where is he?”“He’s waiting for us in the office,” Kalen replied, and I swear I heard a hint of excitement in his voice, too.I followed him out of the room and into what I had thought was Kalen’s office. His father sat behind the desk, looking over the papers. “We’re here,” Kalen said as we walked inside. The rogue king looked up and nodded at us with a small smile on the edge of his mouth. “We’ve found a building that looks like it’s one of James’ safe houses, and the scouts seem to think there is a good chance Caden is being held there.” “Really? What did
As soon as I arrived back at the rogue encampment, Kalen’s father called a meeting. We all met in what once was Kalen’s office, though it seemed it was more like his father’s now. “So how did it go?”“You can expect the lycan king’s best trackers in a few days to help look for James,” I told them, enjoying the shocked expressions on everyone’s faces.“He agrees to help?” the rogue king asked, giving me now a strange speculative look. “How did you do it?”“Honestly, I’m not sure myself. All l did was call him out and his childish grudges and power plays,” I replied with a shrug. The room fell silent for a moment, the weight of my words hanging in the air. Kalen’s father, the rogue king, leaned back in the chair that used to be his son’s, steepling his fingers as his sharp gaze pinned me in place.“You called him out?” he repeated, a faint smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. “And that worked?”“That would work,” Kalen’s mom said with a small smile. “He usually respects honesty…tho
A wave of relief washed over Adelaide and Thomas’ face when I joined them in the main room again. Before they could ask, I said, “Let’s find our rooms for the night.”Thomas nodded and look over at the others waiting as well. “Let’s go. We’re in the east wing tonight. Pair up and we’ll meet here, bright and early,” he told the others, and they followed me up an enormous staircase and took the hall to the right.Once we were in a room, Adelaide took a seat in a chair. “So what happened? What did he say? Did he listen? Is he going to help?”I laughed and took a seat next to her. “Short version is, I don’t know if he’ll help. He’ll probably tell me tomorrow, hopefully,” I replied.“And the long version?”“To start with, the king tried to pull the same old tricks he did when Kalen and I met him last time. He tried to bribe me if I could get Kalen to betray his father and be loyal only to him,” I said, and Adelaide’s disgusted look matched my own.Thomas sighed and shook his head. “Then wh
The lycan king’s eyes blazed with anger, but I kept talking. If I was going to get myself in trouble, I might as well make it worth it. “I know I am no one, but shouldn’t a king’s job be to protect his people, make sure they’re happy, healthy and working together for the benefit of the whole?”The king worked his jaw and slowly nodded. “Ideally, yes.”“Well, that’s not how the packs are working,” I told him, crossing my arms. “Almost every single alpha is some version of a tyrant. I’ve seen insecure alphas who’d snap at anyone who might suggest their not powerful, misogynistic asses who seemed more concerned with creating a harem of lunas than actually being alpha, then you have the ones that can only prove their powerful by stepping on the ones beneath them, the ones that they were supposed to protect.”“What is the point of this?” the king demanded, his voice slightly growly.I held his gaze, refusing to flinch at the edge in his voice. “The point,” I said, my tone steady but sharp,
The rogue king sent six of his wolves, along with Adelaide and Thomas with me to meet the Lycan King. The closer we got to the meeting point, a hunting lodge in the middle of nowhere, I was getting more than a little nervous. “Don't worry, you got this,” Thomas said, giving me I guess what was supposed to be a reassuring smile.“He's right,” Adelaide agreed. “The king wouldn't send you here if he didn't think you could do it.”“You're right,” I said with a smile that was only mostly forced. The king also believed a slap on the wrist was enough for his misdeeds. Yet James was running amuck, so I didn't put much stock into what the king believed. “Let's do this.”We arrived almost at the same time as the lycan king did. To my surprise he came in person. &ldqu
My throat closed as I processed what Kalen told me. To witness meaningless death like that and not be able to do anything about it.. everything he did made a little more sense now. However, that made me think about the here and now. “What happened?”Kalen looked at me, confused. “What do you mean, what happened? When?”“What happened to make you change?” I asked. “You aren’t as tense or angry. I don’t believe it’s just your wolf calming down.”He didn’t answer me at first. Kalen seemed pensive for a long moment, then said, “I broke the pendants of your necklace.” Now, I was confused. I know him breaking them devastated me, but why would that make him suddenly change?Seeing my confusion, Kalen explained, “My anger took me over at that moment, causing me to make assumptions without actually thinking about them and I broke something that was so dear to you, it physically hurt you to lose it. As any sane, logical person would’ve done, you left. That moment the haze of anger disappeared,
Once Kalen and I were alone, he handed me a folder. “This is the report we have on your father,” he said, a look of guilt on his face. “Sorry. I am so sorry, Alyssa. From the beginning I should’ve told you, but… I didn’t want to give you a mysterious tragedy. Instead, I wanted to…” he sighed and shrugged. “I wanted to play the hero. Find the one responsible, punish him, then deliver his head to you… I know how stupid that is now.”Taking the folder from him, I nodded. “I appreciate the thought, Kalen. I really do, but you made me feel like an idiot. Like someone, no one feels the need to take it seriously. Just a toy to lay claim, play with when someone felt like it, then put me on the shelf until they’re bored again. You have no idea how demanding and dehumanising that is.”Kalen winced, his shoulders slumping as if the weight of my words pressed down on him. “You’re right,” he said quietly, his voice tinged with regret. “I was wrong to treat you that way. You deserved the truth from
