Adeline’s pov
“ You know what, I’m out of here” I say turning away and quite enjoying the shocked look that passed both Mom’s and Cecilia’s face. If they want to be their own cute mother’s and daughter’s moment, who was I to stop them?
“ Adeline, calm down. There is no need to be worked up” Auntie Rosa says from behind me. I don’t look back but storm out of the mansion, my hands folded and my face pressed into a scowl.
You might think I’m overreacting. That it’s not that big of a deal. But it is, at least, it is to me. I walk past the gate slamming the green lock a bit too loudly.
This wasn’t the first time my mom took Cecilia’s side. It wasn’t the first that she compared me. It was already enough to be compared to her in school, I had to take it on my birthday too. At school everyone adored Cecilia, she was the perfect daughter, student and girl. It didn’t help that she was tall, had auburn highlighted hair. The kind that they try to sell on Tv commercials for those who want to try dye and her legs were long and glossy. Supermodel kind of legs. She was cute and everyone made sure I knew that.
I on the hand, I barely managed to score average height and that was with wedges. Then my brown hair is just there, I have even given up on it. Which brings me to my spotted legs ( Thanks chicken pox) and from scrapes and bruises as a child. I unfortunately didn’t Inherit Dad’s curved chin or Mom’s pointed nose or any of their features really. Which mom says it’s okay, and that it’s no biggie. I will still grow into it when I’m older.
The street are filled with people going about their business, they turn and smile at me with greetings. The pack’s people always look full of joy upon seeing me.
“ Happy birthday princess!” they greet chirpily. I grin and wave back, that’s not my name obviously but a term of endearment they use for me. ‘ Princess’ because I am the daughter of the Beta of the pack. The second in command of the pack dark herds. Also, my Dad is kind of big deal around here.
Years ago, before I was even born. There was a terrible war that was being waged years ago, the kind where people were killed and others taken into captivity. The war was between North American pack and east America, it was a bloody and dark times for werewolves and it looked like the opposing side has us beaten hands down. But my Dad stepped in saving the day. He assisted the king of alphas, the Alpha of shadows pack to defeat them and chase them from our land. This brought a great amount of glory to the pack.
My mom is also badass, though she annoys me. She has special powers that helps a lot during the war, one of them being the power of healing. That was even how she met my father, when he was badly injured and they fell in love at first sight.
I sighed deeply more in annoyance when I realized my wandering had led me straight to the pack’s house which was also the Alpha’s house. Which was also where the meeting was being held. The house was the largest mansion in the entire pack, it was also the oldest with streak paints of faded grey and lime. The house had inhabited many Alphas.
“ Are you going to stand there like an idiot? Or are you going to come in?” I heard a sarcastic voice behind me. Turning back, I wasn’t surprised to see Aaron because only a few people could talk to me like that and get away with it. Nation’s hero daughter remember.
“ Well..” I drawled out mischievously, folding my hands across my red shirt. “ The only idiot I see here is the one in front of me” I mock right back.
Aaron doesn’t reply me instead he shakes his head and brushes past me. He is way taller than me, then again most people in the pack are. He has his usual carefree blond hair tied in a knot, probably his mom’s orders.
“ Well?” he arches a brow at me and I realized I’ve been staring. Blushing, I rub my face to cover it up.
“ You said something?” I instead ask, acting like I have not being doing anything. He gazed at me intently with light blue eyes, the color of the sea we saw at the beach once.
“ I asked to know if you are coming in or not?” he said. I nod and walked in with him noting faintly, very absently that we were both wearing the same color of jeans. Coincidence, I think not. Fate? Definitely.
Aaron and I had always a weird relationship, we were supposed to be close. I mean he is the son of the Alpha and I’m the daughter of the beta. But Aaron is the kind of guy who keeps to himself and a couple of friends, the only thing I had. Seen him do with a smile is football. Later on I found out the reason he had been so insistent to talk to me that night, he was failing math’s and desperately needed a tutor. He needed a secret one that could make his work go higher and so he won’t be kicked off.
Guess who Cecilia suggested, that’s right, yours truly. I, the same person that never, has never yet gotten a b in Math either.
He walked ahead of me his footsteps seeming to be increasing with every step. He didn’t bother to turn back to check if I was behind him or not. Well so much for wanting to try not to be rude since this was not my house. But I’ve been here a couple of times, everyone in the pack has been. So I know my way around here easily, but it would have been polite to be led by the owner. But that’s right, this was Aaron we were talking about. He didn’t do polite.Sighing deeply I slammed the door shut behind me, it creaked nosily before making a resounding noise as I quickened my steps to match Aaron’s.“ Can you walk like a normal person?” I heave out tiredly holding my aching ribs as he is about to turn into another hallway. Again. Seriously, the guy could win a contest for speed walking. He pauses at the wall, hands in his pocket.“ I don’t do slow poke” he mocked at me making my eyes almost widen. For one moment, I thought he had been teasing along with me. Which was impossible. Because the
Alpha Cain’s face didn’t flinch, he sipped his cup of warm water and dropped it on his table. Then nudged his wife a bit, a small smile on his face. But I had clearly seen in his eyes an annoyed glint.“ Let’s not pull the children’s legs too much, now dear. Shall we?” he said to his wife, all glimpse of annoyance flitted out and only a loving affectionate look lining his face. I blinked, then blinked once again. I was fully certain by the second time I had misunderstood. Luna Jamie grinned softly, hands raised up in mock surrender.“ I am kidding, before you guys start planning my death. I just said to pull your legs” she teased. Dad stood up pushing his chair back with his movement then saluted Alpha Cain.“ If you will excuse me” he started gesturing to me and taking hold of my hand in his. “ I’ve got an inpatient daughter’s birthday to celebrate so..”Alpha Cain nodded motioning with hands that we were dismissed. Then he smiled apologetically at me,“ Sorry for keeping your father
When I opened my eyes again, the hospital light blinded my eyes for a moment. I blinked rapidly, my eyes darting around the white washed room. I would have bolted up, but my body stubbornly remained on the bed and from my vantage, it wasn’t looking pretty overall. The white bandages wrapped around my arms and legs blended in with the white décor and the room was quiet. Questions filled my mind , eagerly pressing on my skull waiting for an answer. The most pressing being if my parents survived, if everything had just been a very very horrible dream. The glass panelled door pulled sideways, startling me from my thoughts and my uncle walked in. He was clad in black overalls, and he had a grim look on his face. It was quite sobering because ever since I knew him, which was since I was born, he always had a grin lining his face. But this person.. This man, who looked like my uncle, walked like him. But it wasn’t him, this was merely a Shadow of him and it is all my fault.“ Uncle Jerome” I
The jeering from the crowd incites fear in me as I see the disgusted gazes of my pack members. These were the same people who gently referred to me as princess. Now they throw their waste at me, some getting tomatoes in my eye and squashing an egg on my head. But still, I don’t give them the satisfaction of wavering, if crying. Although my eyes feel itchy, I blink it away and kneel ramrod straight.I’m at the pack hall which is also the basketball court for the high school students. The pack hall is the place where all important decisions regarding the pack are helmed and everyone is supposed to be in attendance. One of the elder stands up, he adjusts his cane and holds his hand to quiet the crowd. The boss reduce to a silent echo, leaving the only noise to be the elder’s tapping cane.“ I am fully aware we know why we are gathered here this evening” he starts and his voice booms across the still hall. “ But for clarification purpose, we are here to try this pup here for the murder of
Adeline’s povI tried not to cry again. This was something my tear ducts were used to, it was almost a routine to watch it dry up and so I sucked in the tears and thought happy thoughts. Thoughts that comprised of the good old earlier days.Looking back to the sequence of events which brought me to that house of brooding mystery, of sinister undercurrents and disturbing echoes. I sat on a wooden bench I had found as I became lost in thought all alone in the darkness. The happier days weren’t that long, in actuality they were six years ago. Six years ago when my parents were still alive. Forgive me for taking you on this journey, but spare the orphan girl, this only source of comfort.(Flashback begins)I woke up hazily, my eyes springing open by the glimpse of sun passing through dark pink curtains. Then my eyes cleared and joy passed through them, I jumped up from the bed in Glee. It was today! Today was my thirteenth birthday, the day where I was old enough to watch some movies. Old
Adeline’s povWhat the heck was Cecilia trying to prove by doing this, I wondered despondently as I backed away gingerly from the approaching trio. She smiled at me , waving her hands forward and I all I could see was the evil glint in her eyes and the smirk curling her lips. My heart pounded erratically, she must have known I wasn’t feeling too good. I wasn’t good with pain, so I was more than ninety percent sure I had been moaning my head off in that seat over there. It couldn’t be she had gone to seek help, seeing that she was approaching with three boys. I scurried away, my stomach punching me in disapproval. There was a lot of gurgling going down there and I was pretty sure I was going to die. There had to be an exit here or at least a grownup, but all I could see was the swarms of decorations tiled onto the cream wall and an empty hallway.I was yet to tap into my inner wolf, so I could barely communicate with anyone. In essence, I was officially screwed.“ Hold on, Adeline. Sto
