Chapter 7

Marshmallow's tone was initially gentle but became irritated toward the end. His final messages even sounded accusatory. "Why aren't you replying? Are you hiding from me? What are you doing? Haven't you read any of my messages?"

My hands trembled when I saw these. Still, I texted him back in the tone I've always used with him. "I've just woken up. Why are you shouting at me?"

He replied almost immediately. "I'm sorry, my queen. I got ahead of myself. I thought something had happened to you on your way home. Don't be mad at me, please. Accept your knight's loyalty."

He transferred money to me on Venmo again. For some reason, I didn't want to accept the money this time. I would've been delighted by this in the past, but things felt different now.

"I'm not going to take your money this time. Reflect on what you've done," I replied. I transferred the money back to him and threw my phone aside.
