Chapter 2| Save by Him

"Brother..." Alpha Connor murmured and swallowed hard. He was practically shaking in fear and he quickly put down his hand.

I hurriedly bowed my head when Alpha William started coming closer to us.

 

"King William, I... I was just talking to this useless servant. There was no assault intended," Alpha Connor quickly defended himself even if the King hadn't ordered him to say something.

The sound created by Alpha King William's shoes stopped and my heart began to pound wildly. He was already in front of us.

"Effective today, I don't want to see you near her. Do you understand?" The King commanded.

I swallowed. The sweat forming on my forehead rolled down my face.

"Y... Yes, of course! Will do, King William," that was all Alpha Connor said before quickly going back to his seat.

I glanced at the King who was still standing in front of me. My heart skipped a beat when I found that he was staring at me. Our eyes met and I shivered. No matter what they said about his wolf, you could still feel his aura and the extraordinary power in his eyes. It gave you the feeling that he could wipe out all of your kind if he wanted to. He was undeniably a powerful King. After a few seconds, he averted his gaze from me and headed to his throne followed closely by his Beta, leaving me there, still standing and trembling.

He sat on his throne and stared at the large table at which the Alphas were seated.

 

"How dare you all plan to dethrone me?"

They all gasped and I quickly moved closer to the wall in fear. He had only asked a question consisting of a few words, but the authoritative tone had a strong hint of a threat. As if, if you answered it wrongly, you would simply cease to exist in a matter of seconds.

"Our king... We are just concerned about the safety of the Kingdom. Please, forgive us!" Alpha Roger pleaded, moving away from his seat and kneeling on the cold hard floor. He bowed multiple times in front of the King. The other Alphas joined him, with the sole exception of Alpha George who was just sitting quietly like someone who didn't have the slightest concern about what was happening in the surroundings.

"Enough!"

They all shivered and stopped bowing to him.

"Go back to your respective seats."

After the King had said those words, you could see the relief on their faces.

"Only six? Where's the Alpha of the Blackwood Pack?" He asked, his voice filled with irritation.

"Alpha Anderson has an important meeting with his family. They're still searching for his daughter who went missing almost twelve years ago," Alpha George finally spoke up, for the first time since his arrival.

"He's still not given up, huh?" Alpha Connor whispered and he earned a glare from his colleagues.

"Alpha Anderson has a valid reason, so I will let it pass today. Let's all discuss the current situation of the Kingdom," the King began and they all concentrated on listening attentively to him.

"My Beta, Conrad, reported that the number of deaths of werewolves is increasing. Our investigation has found out that these attacks are all carried out by wild rogues. I've ordered the guards to tighten the security and they observed that several rogues were lurking around the palace, even in your respective pack- houses."

"Maybe because there's a witch in this palace, that's why rogues got triggered by unfair treatment," Alpha Roger said and bowed his head.

"My doctor has nothing to do with the killings happening in our Kingdom. Rogues are just clearly dangerous. Why don't you come up with a better solution, Roger?"

 

"I do apologize, King William. I will not bring it up again," he quickly apologized, in an effort to avoid getting the King angry.

"You should never. I don't want to ever hear such a thing again."

Then the King turned to the rest of the Alphas and they all started to give their thoughts on how to decrease the crime rate. I, on my part, remained standing and stole glances at the King from time to time. He never failed to amaze me. I knew he was scary, but you could feel the amount of concern he had for his Kingdom and all the wolves under him. He was undeniably a great ruler and a capable leader who cared for his men. But still, all the werewolves in the palace disliked him. They all saw him as a joke. Some in particular saw him as a threat due to his condition.

* The meeting ended at lunchtime. Alpha King William left the hallway and headed to his room. When he was walking away, I noticed that his face was pale and he was shaking. I got worried when I saw him in that state. Looking around, I saw that no one else in the room had noticed his condition. They were all just busy talking and doing their own thing. All of the servants, including me, started to serve the food. Most of the meals were high in protein. The cook of the palace had selected the best meat for this important day.

"Pff! What an arrogant bastard?!"

"Tone down your voice, Alpha Roger. He might hear you."

I heard those whispers while carefully filling their glasses with wine.

"You, useless Omega! Please get out of my sight! I might disobey the King's order if you're lurking around me! Get out!" Alpha Connor slammed his palm on the table, making me flinch. I quickly bowed respectfully before rushing out of the function hall.

"Are you okay? I saw what happened at the function hall. Did the Alpha King hurt you?" Doris asked in a worried tone. She moved closer and sat on my bed.

 

"No, Doris. The Alpha King didn't hurt me. His half-brother insulted me. The King just saved me from him," I explained as what had happened in the function hall played over in my head.

 

"Are you sure you're okay? Did something happen in your body when the Alpha King stared at you?" She asked once again.

 

"Why do you keep on asking if the King hurt me? The King saved me, Doris. Alpha Connor was the one who did something wrong to me," I spat.

 

She sighed after hearing my words. She gently held both of my arms and looked deeply into my eyes.

 

"I know what Alpha Connor did, but the Alpha King is much more dangerous than his half-brother. I saw his ruby eyes glowing while he was looking at you, Mira."

 

"He was just staring, nothing else, okay? He's not bad, Doris. He has a good heart," I said to her, proudly defending the King.

 

Doris burst into laughter. She shook her head as if I was a big joke.

 

"Mira, you're still young. You're still nineteen. You don't know what's happening behind the curtains. But anyway, just a friendly reminder, stay away from Alphas, especially the King. Understood?" She warned.

 

I looked at her eyes and I saw how concerned she was about me. I had no choice but to nod in understanding, even though I disagreed with her opinion of the King.

 

We were suddenly interrupted by a knock on the door.

 

Doris moved away from me and got out of the bed. She approached the door and opened it.

 

"Mrs. Adams!" Doris exclaimed and quickly bowed her head.

 

I quickly got out of the bed and bowed my head too. Mrs. Adams, who was our supervisor, looked at Doris and then turned her attention to me. She looked at me from head to toe and it made me feel uncomfortable. I started to pull the hem of my shirt nervously.

 

"Mira, go to the King's room. He's asking for your presence." My eyes widened and I looked at Doris who was looking at me too.

 

She mouthed the word "See?"

 

I swallowed hard before looking back at Mrs. Adams.

 

"Will do, Mrs. Adams," I answered politely and went out of the room.
