Chapter one 

Leaving the pack

I was born and raised in the Moon Haven pack, best way to describe where it’s at, is near Logan Utah, it is a big pack and yet, not the biggest. We have over eight hundred wolves and are the fourth largest in the United States. We have seen other packs get attacked by rogues, as well as our own, but we are a warrior pack, and they do not ever make it across our borders. We have extraordinarily strong warriors, we have over four hundred and are all very well trained.

I am not the prettiest girl in the world, but I like to think I am at least good looking. I have a decent body, however, I am tall for my age at fifteen years old. I am five feet ten inches tall and still have three years to grow. I have never understood why I am so tall, and yet because of how I look, I must admit, I am picked on by all of my pack. As I continue getting ready for the day, I put on some light makeup. I put on some eye shadow, eye liner, mascara and some light lip gloss. I don’t ever wear that much makeup. I give myself a look in the mirror. I’m wearing a purple spaghetti strap top, black skinny jeans and a red hoodie and black skater shoes with red socks.

Ah, where is my head at, I am rambling, and I have not even told you who I am. My name is Ashley Renee Smith, I shifted into my wolf when I was nine years old. She is a beautiful midnight black wolf with white tips on three of her four paws, she has red on her right front paw. The fur on her ears is red on the right, and purple on the left. Her eyes are also purple and red just like her ears. She is just as big as my Alpha’s wolf, but I am not sure as to why. My human eyes are also the same color as my wolves, my hair is midnight black with purple and red streaks, and I’m also very strong in both my wolf and human form, though no one has ever seen my wolf. 

I am picked on because she has never been seen and my pack thinks I am wolfless. All though the pack thinks I’m wolfless, they all know of my witch abilities. The Alpha is still unsure of me because of my witch blood, he is not sure if I am a threat or not to the pack. His mate was attacked by a witch Fae hybrid when I was young. She was badly scarred, and her mind was left broken by the witch! This is why he is unsure of all of the hybrids in the pack, and not just me. My entire team is in fact all picked on by the other pack members too. Which is why we are a team.  

Even though I have more than proven my worth to him, which is why he gave me my own elite team. They are my own team of warriors that my father and I have trained, four girls and one guy. The six of us are thick as thieves. We are always with each other, and protect each other, which makes us a badass team. They are also hybrids like me, they are made up of: a witch/wolf, a Fae/wolf, a dragon/Fae, a witch/fairy, and fairy/pixie. We make up the elite team and watch each other’s backs. We always try to stay out of trouble, as we do not want to get kicked out of the pack, and be Rogues, and be hunted by the Royals. Which reminds me my wolf’s name is Midnight Rose, I know right, like crazy. 

Well, enough about me, now it’s time for my most fun part of the day, school, not. “Ashley!”, I hear my mom yell, “Hurry up or you will be late for school. If you miss breakfast again, I am not going to stop and let you get something on the way this time!”. I roll my eyes and yell back down at her, “I am coming!”, as I put on my backpack and head for the door. As I make it to the stairs and start my way down my dad yells, “Have a good day honey!”.

 I walk into the kitchen and I grab a muffin, banana and an orange juice as I head to the front door where my mom is standing with her hurry up look, on her face, you know the one that says you’re going to be late and we’ve been through this a million times before. I roll my eyes at my mom to which my mom says, “don’t roll your eyes at me girl.”. We make it out the front door, get in the car and take off. The ride to school, which takes all of ten minutes, she is lecturing me about time management and responsibility. When we make it to the front of school, I hop out with her still going on and say, “Bye mom, I love you.”.

I shut the car door and headed to my locker to get my books for my first two classes. When I reach my locker and start grabbing my books, I hear my favorite bully, the future Alpha Jason Alan Wright, as in the Wright brothers, you know the ones who figured out flight for the humans. Giggling to myself I sigh as I know what is coming. He and his two besties, the next Beta and Gamma, have made it their personal mission in life to make me feel as horrible as possible. So far, they just use words on me and just bump into me, but they are starting to get increasingly handsy. I am sure it is just a matter of time before they start hitting me.

No sooner than I finish my thought than Jason comes up and slams my locker shut on my hands, and says “Hey freak, why don’t you just leave and become a rogue? Nobody wants you here, and you know that when I become Alpha, I’m going to banish you from the pack.”. I look at him as I pull my hands from my locker and give him a death glare. Before I can respond to him, Josh Evans, his Beta starts in on me by slamming my head into the lockers.

 As I’m standing there trying not to let Midnight shift, and tear him apart, as I don’t want to be a rogue, I hear my girls coming towards me. I look at him and say “Without me, what would you do for fun all day? Who would train all your allies? You know me and my girls are the best at that.”. Before I can say more, Alex Wesley, his Gamma, swings his hand and says, “Bitch you should only talk when the Alpha tells you to, you’re a disrespectful brat.”, as he slaps me across the face.

Before it goes to far, my girls reach me and Jason, and his two lap dogs, leave me standing there wondering what the fuck was that all about, and my girls asking me, “Are you alright?”. I shook my head and said, “Yes, and before you ask, I have no fucking idea what that was.”. I grab my books, close my locker, and start heading for my first class of the day which we all have together, which is math. 

As we all enter the classroom and start walking to our seats, at the back of the class, the bell rings. Before we even reach our seats, the teacher begins his lesson, like we were not even there. We sit down, grab our books, look at each other as to say “What the fuck was that? This is the first time we’ve ever dealt with this before.”. 

As the day goes on, we all get more of the same all day, as if we are all the worst people ever. At lunchtime Matt joins us, we all sit together, and start talking about the day. We quickly realize that the last three years are going to be Hell, as all the teachers and students are either ignoring us or giving us death glares the entire day. When the day is finished, we head out of school, where there is a large group of students out front, as we all start walking to the parking lot looking for our rides home, they are all glaring at us.

As we all get in our parents’ cars my mom starts heading home, about five minutes into the ride, I notice that the girls, Matt, and their parents are all heading to my house. I look at my mom and start to ask, “What is going on?”. She just tells me, “We’ll talk at the house.”. Midnight is concerned at this point and will not stop pacing in my head. When we reach my house the girls, Matt and I get out and head for the front door. We all look at each other with a wtf? look, I shrug my shoulders, and open the front door.

We all stop dead in our tracks and notice all our parents are standing in the living room, with worried looks on their faces. Before I have a chance to ask what’s going on? my dad clears his throat and says, “Everyone sit down.”. I give my dad a worried look and he starts by saying “Guys I think, we have a problem.” 

“Today we were all called to the Alpha’s office and told that in three weeks’ time he will hand over the pack to his son. He thinks his son will eradicate all the hybrids.”. “We think we're about to be attacked by the new Alpha and the pack. Either to be banished from the pack or killed.”. “We were all talking and we thought we should leave the pack tonight before this comes to a head.”. “I know of this old pack house and land that we can take over and move to. It should not be too bad off as the rogues just attacked it last month and killed off a good part of the pack, the Alpha, and the remaining pack members left to other packs.”. 

“Everything should still be in working order, we know this pack is all you have ever known, and you do not want to leave but we all think it's for the best.”. “The six of you are strong and we can put up barriers to protect us until we can get more members.”. “Dad.”, I say, “Who will be Alpha and Luna, you and mom or do you have someone else in mind?”. “Well honey, we were all talking about that seeing as you and the girls as well as Matt are the strongest, we think you all should run the pack, we will train you and teach you all, until you come of age and can take over the pack at eighteen.”. 

The girls, Matt and I were all just sitting there stunned. Midnight whimpering in my head as she is unsure about this. As the shock started to wear off, I looked at my dad and said, “Dad, I have no idea how to run a pack, and what we will do about money, school and…”, I trail off. My dad sighs and says, “Honey, we have money, and you are a strong girl, and we have faith in you. Once we get the pack started we will have to petition the royals to accept our pack. I know you can do it.”. 

I look at all the girls and Matt who have worried looks on their faces and are looking at me for advice. I sigh and say “Well, if you all are sure about this then what time will we leave tonight?”. This time my mom says “We are all packed so as soon as we all agree and get in the cars will head out for the pack house, that we will be taking over. It is about a ten-hour drive from here so we will have to stop somewhere when we get closer.”. 

“Ok, well I am guessing we are all going to have to figure out a name for the new pack and who will be in what position in the pack.”. They all nod their heads and sigh and say, “This is going to be very interesting.”. To which my mom and dad say, “Ok, and with that lets all get going.”. “ Just remember, that when we get to the border of the pack, we will need to stop and denounce the pack, then we can head to the new pack lands and house.”. With that we all get up and head for the cars and trucks that we’ll be taking, and it looks like all we’re taking is what will fit and absolutely need as we all start moving.

I notice that it looks like there is nobody around and wonder if we’re going to make it off pack lands without too much trouble. We all make it to the pack border. It looks like my earlier worries were not anything, because it looks like the Alpha has asked everyone to stay clear. As we get out of the vehicles and denounce the pack by saying, “I (our name) hereby reject The Moon Haven pack as my pack.”, it’s clear that the Alpha has cleared our way and the borders, so his son has no idea we are leaving. 

As we denounce the pack, we all feel the pain of leaving the pack we were born in and get back in the vehicles and continue our journey to the new pack. As we are driving, I suddenly start to realize the magnitude of what we have just done and wonder what life has in store for us.
