"What... What have you... What have you done?" I gasped as I watched the letter's remains fly to the ground. He tore the letter. Why would he do that? Why did he do this?
I know he is the king's Beta, but he has no right. Absolutely no right.
"Why did you..." I moved my gaze from the remains to him. "Do that to the letter? It's my stepmother's letter. Why did you tear it?"
"Her majesty is here; go inside." Without providing an explanation, he simply turned around and walked away. I attempted to follow him but halted abruptly upon spotting the queen mother's vehicle.
Shit. She's here. I need to go inside.
Without wasting another second, I ran into the house and to my room.
I need to bathe. I have to. I can't meet the queen looking and smelling like this. I smell like dried sweat. I smell bad. I must look okay if I'm to meet the queen.
I was skeptical about meeting her but not anymore. My stepmother's earlier behavior has managed to change my mind about things. I know she doesn't want me to meet the queen mother. There must be a reason for that. I want to know her reason for sending me away at such an odd time.
So in order to appear before Her Majesty, I must quickly prepare myself.

Writer's POV
"The queen mother is here, Mom. She's here. We need to welcome her." Genesis ran to her mother's room and knocked on the door.
"Oh, I'll be out in a second," her mom, Beatrice, answered as she placed her last piece of jewelry around her neck.
"Here, I'm done," after checking herself in the mirror, Beatrice rushed out to find Genesis impatiently waiting at the door.
"Where's your father?"
"I believe he is at the gate; let's join him," Genesis answered.
Upon her answer, Beatrice grabbed her daughter's hand and breathed out, "Let's go."
As they reached the front door and were about to step out, an idea suddenly occurred to Genesis.
"Mom, we can't let her meet the queen mother; tell her to stay in her room. You have to tell her to stay..."
"Shush, I've taken care of that; she's not in this house; you don't have to worry about her," Beatrice whispered.
"She's not?"
"She's not in this house. I sent her to Lucy. Lucy will hold her there until tomorrow. She won't return to the house until tomorrow, so don't think about her. Push all thoughts of her to the back of your head."
"Oh, you did? I was worried; thank you, Mom."
"You don't have to thank me; let's focus on getting you into the palace. You are the king's breeder. The king's future wife. A soon-to-be queen, focus on making the queen mother like you, understood?"
"Yes, Mom," Genesis shook her head, pleased with her mother's quick thinking.
"Where's Sarah?" The moment they reached the gate, Mr. Rowan, Sarah's father and Beatrice's mate, posed the question. He has been waiting for the whole family at the gate.
"She's probably having her bath. Not sure," Beatrice reluctantly answered, positioning herself beside him.
"Are you sure she's having her bath?"
"You can look for her yourself if you miss her so much," Beatrice rolled her eyes, annoyed by his questions.
"Don't fight, please; the queen mother is getting out of the vehicle now; we need to coordinate ourselves," Genesis whispered to both parents as she took her position beside her mother.
Just then, the royal vehicle opened, and the king's mother stepped out of it.
"This way, Your Majesty," her chief advisor, Alpha John, who had followed her down there, led the way to Beta Rowan's house.
When the family saw that the queen mother was close enough, they lowered their heads in greetings.
"Welcome to my humble home, Your Majesty. Having you here is a true blessing," Beta Rowan greeted.
"I couldn't believe my ears when I heard you were coming; it's nice to have you, Your Majesty," Beatrice joyfully welcomed her.
"You have been waiting for me."
"Yes, Your Majesty, we have been waiting for your arrival; please come in." Beta Rowan led the way, and the queen mother followed.
Upon entering his sitting room, Beta Rowan offered the queen mother a specially prepared royal seat.
"You have a nice home, Rowan; good for you." After observing her surroundings, Her Majesty gave her compliments.
"Thank you, your majesty, it's a home I built with my first mate."
"Oh, I heard about your first mate, and I know about her death. Although it's late, I'd love to offer my condolences; she was a brilliant woman."
"Thank you, your majesty."
"Why aren't you having your seats? Sit down. I'm here for a good course, so please have your seats." After noticing how everyone was standing, the queen mother urged them to their seats.
"Thank you, Your Majesty," the family bowed in appreciation before taking their seats in their respective positions.
"Your majesty, we prepared a feast; I don't know if you'd like to have something," Beatrice informed immediately after taking her seat.
"I'm not here for that. It is true that I'm here for a good course, but I don't eat at people's houses. It's best you save your meal. And oh, is this the whole family? Where is your other daughter? I don't see her here."
"She... She's running late, your majesty; she... She's not here." Immediately the question left the queen's lips; Genesis didn't waste a second; she stood up and answered.
"I can see that she's not here. I have eyes. I want to know where she is and when she'll be here."
"Oh, she... she..." As Genesis tried to think of a proper answer to give to the queen mother, Beta Rowan, her father immediately stood up.
"She's in her room; let me call her. I don't think she knows that you are here yet."
"Oh great, bring her out; I need to say this before the whole family, so it's important that she is here," the queen mother relaxed against her chair as Beta Rowan excused himself.
Sarah's POV
After taking a quick bath, I went into my wardrobe to search for a dress. I don't have a nice dress. The only nice dresses I own are the ones from when I was little. The ones from when my mother was still alive. As an adult, I don't have a single nice gown.
My stepmother never allowed it. She never bought me one either. My dad sometimes gives her money to get dresses for us, but she never bought one for me. Only for Genesis. I've never complained, though; I don't go out, and I never saw the usefulness of owning a nice dress, so I never said a word to Dad about it.
Now... I'm kind of regretting it now. What should I wear? I can't wear any of my childhood dresses; they won't even fit.
Maybe I should just go to Genesis's room; maybe I should take one of her dresses and... I was still contemplating to myself when my eyes caught a blue gown amongst my many dresses.
What's that gown? I didn't hesitate to reach out to it. I grabbed the gown and brought it out of the wardrobe, then set it down on my bed.
Moon goddess! What is this dress? Who owns this gown? I've never seen a more beautiful dress in my whole life.
This is not Genesis's. I know all of Genesis's dresses by heart. This is not hers. I've never seen her with this. Genesis has a way of flaunting her stuff. If this dress were hers, then she would have shown it to me a hundred times. She would have worn it around the house and even shown it off to her friends a thousand times. This dress is definitely not hers. But if it's not hers, then who owns it? And how did the dress get into my wardrobe?
It can't be my stepmother. My stepmother didn't get this dress for me either. She'll never get something as beautiful as this for me. The highest gown my stepmother would ever get me is a sleeping gown and not even a beautiful one at that. Just a normal sleeping gown. She would never get me something this beautiful and expensive.
Then is it my father? Did my father get me this dress? No, it can't be my father either. I don't think he is the one. Why would he get me a dress and not tell me about it?
This is strange. What is happening? Should I just wear the gown? Maybe I should wear it; I can find the owner of the gown later. This might be the moon goddess helping me.
Yes. My mother must be looking out for me.
After deciding on it, I took the gown and quickly wore it. After putting it on, I walked to the mirror to see how it looked on me, and to my greatest shock, I found out that the dress looked perfect on me.
But how? It's as if this dress was made for me. It fits my small body perfectly. I said it. This gown is not Genesis's. Genesis and I have different body structures. She's taller and fatter while I'm petite. This gown was made for me. It's mine! The realization of what was happening got me excited and also gave me goosebumps.
And as if that was not enough, my eyes caught another thing sitting inside my wardrobe. A box. A fucking shoebox!

"Sarah, are you in there? You should come out; your attention is needed over here."
Huh, is that my dad at the door? My dad is at the door!
"Sarah, are you listening to me? Open the door; I need to..."
"Dad?"I stood up from my dressing table and rushed to the door. I opened it to find my dad standing there. He looks a bit different. Well, he is not wearing his usual work outfit. He looks good when he is not wearing his work outfit.
"Sarah?"
"Dad, you look great, Dad." I didn't hesitate to compliment his looks, but he didn't return the compliment; neither did he say another word. He just continued standing there. He looks surprised. Truly. He is in shock. I'm also in shock myself. I can't believe how good I look in this dress.
We are both used to seeing me in casual, dirty outfits, so this comes as a shock to both of us.
After a few minutes of silence, Dad cleared his throat and said, "You... You... You should come out; Her Majesty wants to see you."
Her Majesty wants to see me? "Do you happen to know why, Dad? Why does she want to see me?"
"She wants to see the whole family. Don't keep her waiting."
"Alright, I'm right behind you," I smiled and watched as he slowly walked away.
After taking a final glance at the mirror, I walked out of my room to join the others.
"She'll be with us soon, Your Majesty; sorry for keeping you," before I enter the sitting room, I overhear my father say to Her Majesty, but the next thing I overhear causes my legs to abruptly stop.
"Tell Her Majesty the truth, dear; Sarah left the house earlier because she didn't want to meet Her Majesty. She's too shy and timid. You didn't see her in her room, did you? Let's not keep Her Majesty waiting; Sarah won't show up."
"And who told you that she won't show up? Sarah is standing right over there; are you too blind to see her? You are a werewolf; how come your vision is this bad? The next line of words that followed my stepmother's words not only shocked me but also shocked everyone present in the room.
What the heck? Did Her Majesty just insult my stepmother? And did she just defend me in front of everyone? Shocking. This is unbelievable. The queen mother is regarded for her calmness and regality. This comes as a surprise.
"Come here, my dear, come and sit beside me; you look very beautiful in that dress," as if the first one was not enough; her majesty dropped another bombshell on us. She wants me to sit beside her. In a seat designated for royalty.
How is this happening?
"That's a preposterous idea, Your Majesty; commoners are not suited for the royal seat. The royal seat was solely prepared for you." After Her Majesty dropped the bombshell, my stepmother didn't waste a second to say this. I knew she would say this. It would kill her to see me sit beside Her Majesty. It would kill her and her daughter."Watch your tongue, woman; you are speaking to her royal majesty. How dare you use those words on her? Apologize or be punished!" Chief advisor John furiously rebuked her."Please forgive her; she didn't mean it that way." My father stood to his feet and immediately apologized, and then he turned to my stepmother, "What are you waiting for? Apologize to her majesty. Do you wish to be punished?""I... I... I am sorry," with her head lowered in regret, my stepmother shamefully stood to her feet and pleaded for forgiveness. "Please forgive me; I was only concerned about Her Majesty.""Yes, Your Majesty, it will not happen again; please forgive us," my fath
"Sarah, what is it?" When he noticed I was not moving, he turned around to inquire."D...add."Noticing how my body kept trembling and how hard I sobbed, he asked again, "Sarah, are you okay? What is it? Why are you crying?""Dad, can I ask you a question...? I have something I need to ask you.""Not now, please; we need to leave right away.""No. I refuse. I refuse, Dad. I'm not going anywhere until you answer my question... Tell me... Tell me why you hate me. Tell me what I did wrong; I need to know what I did so wrong. Please tell me. You are the only parent I have left, and yet you continue to treat me in this manner. Why, Dad? I need an explanation.""I'm not going anywhere until you answer me." I thought that I could get to him, that if I did this, I could get an answer from him, but I was wrong. Instead of giving me an answer, he immediately changed the topic."We need to go to your mother's grave; you need to pay your respect to her and tell her about her Majesty's visit. It's
I've been standing in front of the king's room, unable to go in. Beta Waylen forcefully brought me to his door and left me there. He told me to knock on the door, and once I received a signal, I should go in.I've been too scared to knock; I don't want to go in. I don't want to see him. I don't think I can see him. There are dangerous and worrisome rumors about him, most of which are true. The king is a dangerous being. He is hardly seen. Hardly heard. He appears and disappears when you least expect it. And no one knows what he truly looks like except his mother and his beta.Yes, it's strange. We all saw him at the ballroom the other day. I also saw him, but I can hardly recall his facial features. I can hardly remember what he looks like. People tend to forget his looks a few minutes after meeting him. It's strange. Really strange. Does he erase our memories of him? Does he make us forget him?He has great powers. Great abilities. So he can actually erase our memories if he wants t
I'm stuck. I can't move. He is too close for comfort. And he is weirdly staring at me too. He is staring at me like I'm an exhibition. When I saw him approaching, I immediately lowered my head and started to beg for forgiveness, "Forgive me, your Highness, I didn't mean to annoy you, I was only trying to..." I paused my speech when I saw him stop in front of me; curious to see what he looked like, I lifted my head up and moved my gaze to his face. I expected to see an ordinary-looking man or a very good-looking male wolf, but nothing could have prepared me for the very thing I saw. Nothing could have prepared me for this. For him. For his looks. He looks... A gasp left my lips, and before I could control myself, I found my legs pulling me to the ground once again. A second gasp left my lips once I had landed on the floor.Moon goddess! He looks... He looks terrifying. His looks are not ordinary. He doesn't look like the rest of us.His eyes are strange; they have different colors. One
I'm on my way home right now, and I can't stop crying. It's difficult to believe this. I'm finding it hard to believe everything Her Majesty just told me.How is this possible? How come no one told me until now? How did my father hide something this important from me? How did he manage to keep it from me all these years? He watched me suffer. He watched me getting insulted and abused by his wife and his daughter for not having a wolf, and he didn't dare try to defend me for one day?He watched me wallow in pain; he watched me depressed over the fact that I didn't have a wolf. How dare he? How could my father do this to me? How could a man do that to his own daughter? He knew that I was not at fault. He knew what the fault was, but he watched me suffer.I can't believe this. I won't really believe it until I see him. I need to confirm this with him first. Why is my mother a Scarlet? Scarlets are special, rare beings. Scarlets are direct descendants of the moon goddess. Most Scarlets do
After regaining her composure, my stepmother charged at me again; she grabbed my hair and started pulling it."I don't care, bitch! I don't care what becomes of me; I must put you in your place; I must put you where you belong. I might as well kill you and go to jail. Yes, I better kill you now. I'll face the punishment. I don't care what happens to me; I'll surely kill you. I'll kill you; I'll destroy you." As she tries hard to pull out my entire hair, I look for every possible means to stop her.I attempted to grasp her hands, but her fingers became entangled in my thick hair. I tried to reach for her hair and also pull it out, but I was not tall enough to reach her short hair. And she's holding me in a way that makes it impossible for me to fight back. She is pressing me down; she's putting all her weight on me, but I refuse to give in.I refuse to fall to the floor. If she succeeds in taking me down, then she'll take full advantage of it. And who knows what she might do? She might
Writer's POVFlashback to the ballroom incident. The king was taking a walk in his private garden when Beta Waylen came in from the back; he paid his respects to the king and then stood behind him.A few seconds passed between them before the king spoke up; he asked, "What did she say?""She said not to worry, your Highness," Beta Waylen immediately responded."Not to worry? So she'll keep the competition open?" The king asked, but it was more of a statement."She has faith," Beta Waylen said."Hmm, faith. What do you think?""Your Highness, I also believe it's a good idea.""Hmm.""Her majesty is growing more anxious. S's a parent after all," Beta Waylen stated, but his words sounded funny to the king.He smirked and briefly glanced at his beta, "What do you know about that topic? You're just as clueless as I am."Beta Waylen also smirked, "I think I have more knowledge.""Really? Indulge me, I'm willing to learn," he chuckled, and Beta Waylen shook his head as he tried to hold back
Writer's POV Flashback to Sarah's second visit to the palace. The king was reading a file in his room when a knock came to the door, followed by a push. The door opened, and Beta Waylen walked in."Your Highness called," Beta Waylen bowed."Yes, she'll be here soon; when she comes, bring her to me," without looking away from the file, the king said to him."I will," Beta Waylen said, bowing respectfully and turning to leave. He paused at the door and then returned his focus to the king."Are you okay? Do you need her for anything?" He inquired, his concern for the king's health evident.Hearing this question, the king stopped what he was doing and replied, "No, I think I miss her.""What?! You miss her?" Before he could stop himself, Beta Waylen let out a loud exclamation. When he regained control of his emotion, he lowered his head and apologized, "Forgive me, your grace, that wasn't my intention," he explained."You don't need to apologize; I can tell exactly how you feel. And hone
Sarah's POV"Mistress. Mistress, you've got to wake up. Mistress," Brielle continued calling me, but I'm not ready yet. I need more sleep. I didn't sleep last night, so I'm really tired."Mistress, wake up." She gently tapped me on my arm, but I ignored her and kept my eyes closed."The Queen Mother is here; she's here to see you." After a few minutes of silence, she drew closer to me and whispered. "I know you're listening; wake up; she wants to see you."The Queen Mother is here? Why is she here? Could Brielle be lying? She might be trying to make me get up by all means. "Mistress, I am not lying; she has something to say to you. It's about the King.""The King?" I slightly lifted my head and looked at her."Yes, it's the king. I don't think the king will be available today," she answered.Huh, what does that mean?"Why? Why is that?" I groaned."I have no idea; I am confident that the Queen Mother will provide you with the necessary information."I immediately arose from the bed a
Writer's POV "Mom! Mom!" Genesis stormed into the kitchen to find her mother struggling with the kitchen utensils."What is it? Why are you screaming? What happened?" Beatrice dropped the utensils."Mom! You won't believe this, you won't believe this," Genesis screamed."Calm down; let's go to the sitting room." After washing her hands, Beatrice led Genesis to the sitting room."Now tell me, what happened? Explain in detail.""Mother, I did what you asked. I procured information regarding the king by bribing a servant.""Okay, and?""I finally located the king's room today.""What happened? Tell me.""I went into his room, Mom. I did everything we spoke of.""And? What did the king say? Spill it.""The king disgraced me, Mom. And his beta dragged me out of the room and out of the palace. He has also restricted me from visiting the palace. He threatened me, saying he would also send me to jail."I don't understand, why would Beta Waylen do that to you?""I don't know, Mom; I don't kno
I saw my whole world crumbling when Genesis slammed the door behind her, but my sincere prayers to the moon goddess were answered because the moment I grabbed the door handle, the door instantly gave way for me. This is quite unusual as the door typically remains locked when you slam it. When the door opened, I did not hesitate and dashed inside to stop her. I saw her moving towards the bedside and ran to her. I grabbed her arm and started pulling her out of the room, but my effort didn't make much difference."What are you doing? Are you crazy?" I whispered as I continued to drag her with me. She has to leave before the king returns here. I'm sure he is dressing up; once he's done dressing, he'll come out, and when he does,. I don't know what or how he'll react to her presence."Where is the king? I want to greet him," Genesis replied while running her eyes around the room."Are you not listening? We need to leave; come with me," I groaned as I continued to pull her. But Genesis sna
The day Genesis apologized and begged to be my escort, I easily agreed to her request, not because I liked her. This was not because I had forgiven her, but rather because I needed to maintain a close relationship with her. In order to achieve my goals concerning her and my stepmother, I need to keep her really close.I need to make her believe that I have forgiven her. I need to give her the impression of a fool. I need to make her think that I'm a fool. I've been acting foolishly, allowing her to have her way. I let her come to my quarters, I let her into my chambers, and I give her access to some of my fits. I've been working towards achieving my goal; I can't let my anger ruin things now.I should apologize."I... I... I am sorry, big sister, I..." Shocked by my outburst, Genesis struggled to apologize."No, no, I'm sorry for yelling at you. I shouldn't yell at you, Genesis; I'm at fault; forgive me." I drew closer to her and also apologized.A big smile appeared on her face, and
Two weeks later Sarah's POVI am standing in front of the king's room with a tray of fruits, waiting for him to notice me. I've been doing this daily since I came into the palace, bringing a tray filled with different fruits to him. I've heard that he loves it and prefers fruits to real food, so I made it my duty to bring it to him every day.Just like yesterday and every other day, I'm waiting for him to open the door. The door is kind of strange; it doesn't open unless the king allows it. The only time I can enter his room is when he wants it, but why is it taking longer today?I've been standing here for more than ten minutes. Is he out? Is he asleep? But he is not the type to take a nap at noon. I've heard he barely sleeps. He is awake most nights and works during the day. He can't possibly be asleep, right?Should I knock on the door? Or should I just walk away? I'm confused. No, maybe I should wait. Yes, I'll wait five more minutes; he loves his fruits. He doesn't go a day with
As Rowan struggled to come up with an answer, Beatrice couldn't hide the visible anger she felt. How on earth? Why is this happening? Why would Sarah become a permanent member of the royal family? This implies that the royal family would treat Sarah with respect throughout her lifetime. No. This is wrong. This is not right. This shouldn't be happening.Genesis is the only she-wolf fitted for the king. After pondering over the question for some seconds, Rowan rose to his feet and answered, "I don't think I can accept the bride price. Forgive me, Your Majesty," he lowered his head and apologized. What? What is he saying? Beatrice scoffed, Is he refusing this great offer? I thought he loved his daughter. Does he not love her enough? What a fool! How can he reject such a life-changing offer? Well, I support his decision for his daughter. I fully support him. I don't want her to become a permanent member of the royal family either. Beatrice secretly thought to herself."You can't accept
