"Where are you coming from? Where have you been? Do you know what time it is? It's two hours before noon. Two hours!"
"Why are you not speaking, Sarah? Where have you been? I won't ask again."
After standing outside my father's house for twenty minutes, I finally decided to go in, but the atmosphere I met inside the house was much more intense than I imagined it'd be. It seemed my stepmother and my father had a fight. I met her fuming and cursing my father when I came in.
I don't know why they fought, but I'm happy that they did. Yes, I'm beyond happy. Today is Saturday, so my father is home; he won't be leaving for work today. This means that my stepmother will feel restless throughout today and even tomorrow. They rarely fight, but whenever they do, they don't settle their differences immediately. It takes days and sometimes weeks for them to get back together. This is great! I don't see Genesis around either. She must have left the house when she saw them arguing.
She loves my dad as much as she loves her mom, so watching both parents fight causes her heartache. Well, her pain is my happiness. I should have seen the look on her face before she left the house. The look of pain. I should have seen it.
"I said, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?" I was still deeply in thought and didn't quickly realize that my stepmother was now standing before me. Before I could open my mouth to tell her my cooked-up story, I felt a sharp sting on my left cheek, quickly followed by another on my right.
"Do you think I'm playing?!" She landed another slap close to my ear, and this caused me to go deaf for a split second.
"Do you see me as a fool now?!" Another slap quickly followed the last one; it landed close to my eyes, causing me to move back quickly as tears filled my eyes.
I forgot something; I forgot to tell you the most important thing that happens during this period: whenever she and my dad fight, she tends to take out all her frustrations on me. The punishment, the beating, the emotional and physical abuse—they all increase. She takes everything out on me.
I literally become her punching bag. This is why I hate her. I'll forever hate her. There's no way I'd ever forgive her. Absolutely no way!
"You left home yesterday; you left your house chores; you didn't even spread the clothes you washed; you didn't clean the kitchen or make dinner; you left everything for me. Who do you think you are? What gave you the audacity to behave so unruly?" My stepmother advanced closer and continued hitting me, but I didn't make a single sound.
She was busy hurting me and didn't notice when my father walked into the sitting room with a palace messenger.
"What are you doing?" My stepmother was taken aback by the question, leaving her hand hanging in midair.
My father's attention moved from my stepmother's and settled on me for a brief moment before moving back to the palace messenger.
"Please have your seat," my father offered the palace messenger, but he declined.
"I've brought a message from the palace; I need to quickly be on my way," the man announced.
"A message from the palace?" My stepmother's eyes widened in excitement. She moved closer to the man and also urged him to have his seat, but he declined her offer once again.
Just as the man was about to make the announcement, the front door opened, and Genesis walked in.
"What's going on?" Her eyes swept across the room the next minute.
"Come here, sit down; he brought news from the palace," my stepmother pulled her daughter closer and held her.
"It must be good news; the palace must have made their decision," my stepmother whispered into Genesis's ears as the palace messenger resumed his speech.
"The queen mother will make a short trip to this house by 1:00 pm tomorrow. Make sure everyone in this household is present when she comes. That is all."
"Um, can you give us more information? I want to know the reason for her visit; does it have anything to do with my daughter? Does it concern the ongoing competition?"
"I'm afraid I don't have an answer to that; I'm only a messenger. I must take my leave now." The man tried to walk away, but my stepmother desperately held onto him.
"Please just give us a clue; the palace has chosen my daughter, right? She is to become the king's breeder, right? Please tell me anything; I'm literally dying to know."
"Let me escort you out," my stepmother was still holding onto the palace messenger when my father stepped in. He forcefully pulled her hands away from the man, and after giving her a mean look, he walked out with him, leaving my stepmother looking red and embarrassed.
She was too desperate to notice that what she was doing was wrong. Why would she hold onto another man in front of her husband, her mate?
After getting over her shock, she turned to her daughter and smiled at her. "You did it, dear. You won! You've won the competition. The queen mother is coming over to see you."
"But Mom, how can you be so sure? It might be for another reason; for some reason, Genesis didn't look convinced.
"For what? For what other reason? Do you know anything?"
"I... I don't know... maybe, maybe," she looked over her shoulder and glared at me.
"Why? Why are you staring at her? What is the problem? Tell me," my stepmother took both of her hands and held them gently.
"It's just that..." Genesis stopped speaking completely and just stared at me.
"What is it? Talk to me, baby."
"No, it's nothing, Mom. You might be right after all; she might be coming for me." After a long while of silence, Genesis forced a smile to her face. "Let's get ready."

The Next Day
"Once you're done with the dishes, clean the compound. Make sure everywhere is sparkling clean," my stepmother walked into the kitchen and said to me.
"Yes ma, I will do that immediately. After I was done with the dishes," I grabbed the broom and moved to the compound.
I've swept here already, but my stepmother doesn't look satisfied with it; she wants me to sweep everywhere again. I don't mind, though; doing the chores has helped me so far. It has helped divert my attention from the pending danger.
After the messenger left yesterday, I couldn't stop thinking about the beta's words. The king's beta already informed me of the queen's visit. What he didn't tell me was the reason for her visit.
I can't help but think that the reason could be connected to me. Is the queen mother coming to see me instead of Genesis? Is she going to expose my deeds to them? Is she coming to scold my parents for not teaching their daughter the right thing? I feel very restless; I didn't have a good night's sleep last night. I kept turning in my bed until it was morning.
We have three hours until the queen's arrival. Should I disappear from the house like I did yesterday? I'll return to the house after the visit. I feel like I shouldn't be present when she arrives.
Maybe I should leave the house. I think it'll be better that way. Right?
"Hey, what are you doing? Why aren't you sweeping?" Genesis appeared at the door with a dress my stepmother bought for her a few months ago. She has never worn the dress before; her mother wants her to wear it today. Her mother wants to impress the queen with Genesis's beauty. So she's putting her all into getting Genesis ready for the Queen's visit.
"What are you doing? Why are you just standing there? Don't you know what the time is?" Genesis hissed out loudly. For some unknown reason, Genesis has been on edge around me since yesterday.
She hasn't taken her eyes away from me, always boring holes into my skin. Always watching everything. Always commenting on things I do. I don't understand her problem. She has always been a pain but never to this extent. What is disturbing her? Why does she keep picking on me?
I do everything around here. I do all the damn chores while she lazes around. I honestly hope she fails the competition. She'll become a much bigger pain if she passes.
"You're older, but your brain is full of shit. I don't understand why Father wants you here; you're good for nothing," she hissed again before going into the house.
Fifteen minutes to the queen mother's visitation.
"Sarah!"
"Sarah!"
"Ma," I ran out of my room and went into hers once I heard my name.
"Are you done? Are you done with the chores?"
"Yes, ma, I want to take my bath now."
"This is not a time for that; I need you to run another errand for me. It's urgent."
"Okay, what is it?"
"I need you to go to Lucy's house and give this to her." She extended a written letter to me, which I didn't hesitate to accept.
"Tell her to read it and write my feedback; I need feedback today. Do you understand?"
"Y... Yes, ma."
"Now go; you can have your bath after you've delivered my letter."
"O... Oh..."
"What? Do you have something to say?"
"I'll... I'll miss the queen mother if I leave for Lucy's house now."
"There's still time; if you're fast enough, you won't miss her."
"But... But..." It'll take twenty minutes to get to Lucy's house and another twenty minutes to get back. Is she sending me away because she doesn't want me to be here when the queen mother arrives?
Why? Why is she sending me away? Is there a reason I don't know of?
"What? Do you have something to say?"
"It's nothing; I'll take my leave now." I shook my head twice before turning to leave.
"Go straight from here, ; if you see your father outside, do not reveal anything to him. Do you understand?"
"Yes, ma."
After leaving her room, I took the back door that led out of my father's house. I was about to begin my journey to Lucy's house but couldn't because of the number of vehicles parked outside. The vehicles were parked in a way that prevented a possible and safe passage.
Has the queen mother arrived already? When did she get here? As I struggled to look for a possible route, I didn't fail to notice the pairs of keen eyes watching me from a distance.
Is that the king's beta? Did he escort the queen mother? Why are they here so early? Ignoring his gaze, I kept moving from one vehicle to another as I looked for a route. If I don't find a way, I'll have to walk on one of the vehicles.
"Where are you heading to?" When he was tired of watching me, he came down from one of the vehicles and walked to me.
"Can you please move the vehicle? I need to be somewhere right now."
"Don't you know what time it is? Where are you heading to?"
"I... My stepmother sent me on an errand; I need to..."
"You are not going anywhere. Her Majesty will be here in less than five minutes. Don't you know the rules? Are you trying to disrespect the royal family by leaving? Are you that dumb? Is your brain made of ice?" He barked. He sounds angry; he also looks angry.
Why is he angry at me? My stepmother sent me on an errand despite knowing the rules. He should be angry at her not me. Why is he insulting me?
"But... I... I..." I brought the letter out to show to him but what he did next left me in total disbelief.
"This is the..." I was trying to explain the letter to him, but he shocked me by snatching the letter away from me. Before I knew what was happening, he opened the letter, and before I could take the letter away from him, he tore the letter into tiny bits and spread the remains into the air.
What the hell? What just happened?!
"What... What have you... What have you done?" I gasped as I watched the letter's remains fly to the ground. He tore the letter. Why would he do that? Why did he do this? I know he is the king's Beta, but he has no right. Absolutely no right."Why did you..." I moved my gaze from the remains to him. "Do that to the letter? It's my stepmother's letter. Why did you tear it?""Her majesty is here; go inside." Without providing an explanation, he simply turned around and walked away. I attempted to follow him but halted abruptly upon spotting the queen mother's vehicle.Shit. She's here. I need to go inside.Without wasting another second, I ran into the house and to my room.I need to bathe. I have to. I can't meet the queen looking and smelling like this. I smell like dried sweat. I smell bad. I must look okay if I'm to meet the queen.I was skeptical about meeting her but not anymore. My stepmother's earlier behavior has managed to change my mind about things. I know she doesn't want
"That's a preposterous idea, Your Majesty; commoners are not suited for the royal seat. The royal seat was solely prepared for you." After Her Majesty dropped the bombshell, my stepmother didn't waste a second to say this. I knew she would say this. It would kill her to see me sit beside Her Majesty. It would kill her and her daughter."Watch your tongue, woman; you are speaking to her royal majesty. How dare you use those words on her? Apologize or be punished!" Chief advisor John furiously rebuked her."Please forgive her; she didn't mean it that way." My father stood to his feet and immediately apologized, and then he turned to my stepmother, "What are you waiting for? Apologize to her majesty. Do you wish to be punished?""I... I... I am sorry," with her head lowered in regret, my stepmother shamefully stood to her feet and pleaded for forgiveness. "Please forgive me; I was only concerned about Her Majesty.""Yes, Your Majesty, it will not happen again; please forgive us," my fath
"Sarah, what is it?" When he noticed I was not moving, he turned around to inquire."D...add."Noticing how my body kept trembling and how hard I sobbed, he asked again, "Sarah, are you okay? What is it? Why are you crying?""Dad, can I ask you a question...? I have something I need to ask you.""Not now, please; we need to leave right away.""No. I refuse. I refuse, Dad. I'm not going anywhere until you answer my question... Tell me... Tell me why you hate me. Tell me what I did wrong; I need to know what I did so wrong. Please tell me. You are the only parent I have left, and yet you continue to treat me in this manner. Why, Dad? I need an explanation.""I'm not going anywhere until you answer me." I thought that I could get to him, that if I did this, I could get an answer from him, but I was wrong. Instead of giving me an answer, he immediately changed the topic."We need to go to your mother's grave; you need to pay your respect to her and tell her about her Majesty's visit. It's
I've been standing in front of the king's room, unable to go in. Beta Waylen forcefully brought me to his door and left me there. He told me to knock on the door, and once I received a signal, I should go in.I've been too scared to knock; I don't want to go in. I don't want to see him. I don't think I can see him. There are dangerous and worrisome rumors about him, most of which are true. The king is a dangerous being. He is hardly seen. Hardly heard. He appears and disappears when you least expect it. And no one knows what he truly looks like except his mother and his beta.Yes, it's strange. We all saw him at the ballroom the other day. I also saw him, but I can hardly recall his facial features. I can hardly remember what he looks like. People tend to forget his looks a few minutes after meeting him. It's strange. Really strange. Does he erase our memories of him? Does he make us forget him?He has great powers. Great abilities. So he can actually erase our memories if he wants t
I'm stuck. I can't move. He is too close for comfort. And he is weirdly staring at me too. He is staring at me like I'm an exhibition. When I saw him approaching, I immediately lowered my head and started to beg for forgiveness, "Forgive me, your Highness, I didn't mean to annoy you, I was only trying to..." I paused my speech when I saw him stop in front of me; curious to see what he looked like, I lifted my head up and moved my gaze to his face. I expected to see an ordinary-looking man or a very good-looking male wolf, but nothing could have prepared me for the very thing I saw. Nothing could have prepared me for this. For him. For his looks. He looks... A gasp left my lips, and before I could control myself, I found my legs pulling me to the ground once again. A second gasp left my lips once I had landed on the floor.Moon goddess! He looks... He looks terrifying. His looks are not ordinary. He doesn't look like the rest of us.His eyes are strange; they have different colors. One
I'm on my way home right now, and I can't stop crying. It's difficult to believe this. I'm finding it hard to believe everything Her Majesty just told me.How is this possible? How come no one told me until now? How did my father hide something this important from me? How did he manage to keep it from me all these years? He watched me suffer. He watched me getting insulted and abused by his wife and his daughter for not having a wolf, and he didn't dare try to defend me for one day?He watched me wallow in pain; he watched me depressed over the fact that I didn't have a wolf. How dare he? How could my father do this to me? How could a man do that to his own daughter? He knew that I was not at fault. He knew what the fault was, but he watched me suffer.I can't believe this. I won't really believe it until I see him. I need to confirm this with him first. Why is my mother a Scarlet? Scarlets are special, rare beings. Scarlets are direct descendants of the moon goddess. Most Scarlets do
After regaining her composure, my stepmother charged at me again; she grabbed my hair and started pulling it."I don't care, bitch! I don't care what becomes of me; I must put you in your place; I must put you where you belong. I might as well kill you and go to jail. Yes, I better kill you now. I'll face the punishment. I don't care what happens to me; I'll surely kill you. I'll kill you; I'll destroy you." As she tries hard to pull out my entire hair, I look for every possible means to stop her.I attempted to grasp her hands, but her fingers became entangled in my thick hair. I tried to reach for her hair and also pull it out, but I was not tall enough to reach her short hair. And she's holding me in a way that makes it impossible for me to fight back. She is pressing me down; she's putting all her weight on me, but I refuse to give in.I refuse to fall to the floor. If she succeeds in taking me down, then she'll take full advantage of it. And who knows what she might do? She might
Writer's POVFlashback to the ballroom incident. The king was taking a walk in his private garden when Beta Waylen came in from the back; he paid his respects to the king and then stood behind him.A few seconds passed between them before the king spoke up; he asked, "What did she say?""She said not to worry, your Highness," Beta Waylen immediately responded."Not to worry? So she'll keep the competition open?" The king asked, but it was more of a statement."She has faith," Beta Waylen said."Hmm, faith. What do you think?""Your Highness, I also believe it's a good idea.""Hmm.""Her majesty is growing more anxious. S's a parent after all," Beta Waylen stated, but his words sounded funny to the king.He smirked and briefly glanced at his beta, "What do you know about that topic? You're just as clueless as I am."Beta Waylen also smirked, "I think I have more knowledge.""Really? Indulge me, I'm willing to learn," he chuckled, and Beta Waylen shook his head as he tried to hold back
It's been five minutes since Brielle came into my room. She arrived while I was still in the bathroom; I had to quickly put on some clothes. Brielle doesn't look too good. I want to ask her a lot of questions but can't bring myself to focus. Whenever I try to raise a question, I recall my moments with His Highness. How I kept touching myself with his fingers. This is terrible; it's bad. I want to forget that moment, even if it's for an hour. I want to know more about Brielle's experience.I need to calm down. After my short breathing exercises, I turned my attention to Brielle, who was sitting on one of the sofas in the room."Brielle," I called."Brielle," I called again after not getting a reply. She's deep in thought. What is she thinking about so deeply?"Brielle!" I called a third time, raising my voice higher and drawing her attention. "Yes," she jumped, "yes, Mistress." She turned her attention to me."What is up with you? What did they do to you? Have you been maltreated or
I didn't mean any harm when I hugged him; I definitely wasn't expecting him to react too well considering the type of person he was, but the way he reacted greatly shocked me. After I threw my body on his and held him tight, I felt him hesitate for five seconds; after the five seconds were up, he grabbed me and held me tight. He wrapped his large arms around my body, put his nose to my neck, and sniffed deeply. "You shouldn't have done that," he whispered, his voice coming out very husky and harsh, and then, within the next second, he released me from his grip and took two steps away from me.But before he stepped away, I had already noticed something different about him. His body. I noticed how his body hardened under my hold and how his heartbeat increased. I also didn't fail to notice how the mood in the room changed."Your Highness," I called, taking a step closer."You need to stay away from me, Sarah." He took three steps back, creating a bigger gap between us."Your Highness,"
It's been three days since we arrived here. Three fucking days of loneliness. Beta Waylen has refused to take me to the king. Every time I asked, he would tell me that the king was busy. He also refused to take me to the servants' quarters to see Brielle. When I asked him to bring Brielle to me, he also refused that request. He said it was not yet time. He asked me to wait till the weekend. Well, today is Saturday. He has assured me that I'll be able to see the king in the dining room today. He said it was mandatory for everyone, both guests and royal members, to eat together at the table. It was mandatory. It was the rule over here."What about Brielle? Will I see her today?" I asked him. He promised to bring her to me after breakfast today. Breakfast is at 10:00am today. It's a few minutes until 10:00am. I am anxiously waiting."Will I see the king's children in the dining room?" I remember asking him this question, and he nodded positively. "They'll be there," his answer was short
We had barely dug into our meals before the temperature in the room suddenly dropped to minus zero degrees. A lady in a white flowing gown walked into the room with a smug look on her face. Who is she? Why does she walk in as if she owns the place? For some reason, I don't feel good about her. It turns out I'm not the only one who feels disturbed by the lady's presence, judging from the expression I see on that princess's face."Hey, she's the one I told you of; I didn't expect her to actually show up," she drew closer and whispered to me.Oh, she's the 'Vee.' The lady who wants to be His Highness's woman.Well, she's not bad-looking, nor is she too beautiful. She's tall and slim, with long hair that surpasses her shoulder length. She has a sharp nose, dark eyes, and high cheekbones and exudes a high-class aura. "You started without me; it's not fair." She walked to the Lycan king and kissed him on his cheek."Hi, Dad, you look younger today; it doesn't seem like you're aging at all
Writer's POV "You want to have sex with me?" Beta Waylen gazed at her."Yes, sir," she shook her head."Okay, come with me." Beta Waylen started moving to his room, and Brielle silently followed him from behind. When they got to Beta Waylen's room, he turned on the room's light and started taking off his clothes."What are you doing?" When he noticed how Brielle wasn't doing anything, he asked her."Huh?" She looked at him, a bit confused."What are you doing? Why aren't you undressed?""Oh, oh," Brielle oohed and began to undress. Is this a dream? Am I dreaming? Brielle wondered as she slowly took off her shirt. She never imagined that he would give in to her easily; she always thought that it would be difficult to get into his bed considering how strict he was. After taking off his clothes, Beta Waylen turned to Brielle, "Do you want to bathe?""Um... no, I'm fine; I showered a while ago," she responded."I'll have one and return quickly; go to the bed after undressing," he spoke
It's been a few hours since we commenced the journey; the king and his beta are riding in the vehicle ahead of us, and Brielle and I are sharing one vehicle. The king said that it would be impossible to ride in one vehicle, and I agree. Riding in the same vehicle will make us uncomfortable. Especially Brielle. She can't stand the king's presence. She makes sure to stay far away from the king whenever she sees him.And you won't believe one thing I discovered before the journey started: at exactly 4:33 am today, I barged into Beta Waylen's room, and when I couldn't find him, I went to His Highness's chambers.I believed that Beta Waylen could be with the king, but when I got to his room, I was disappointed by the news I received. Beta Waylen was making sure that the vehicles were okay. "He is busy," were the king's words. Then he asked me my reasons for seeking him out; I explained my reasons, and he shook his head. "Waylen is not the boy's father," he revealed."What?" I gasped at the
"What are you really trying to say?" After a few seconds of silence, I approached him again. "Are you trying to say that vampires are not horrible?" I asked, glaring at him, I don't know what gave me the guts, but I suddenly felt like arguing with him. "Should I stand there and watch as they attack me?" I asked."Some aren't as horrible as you think," he responded. "Because you've met them? They were probably scared of you," I countered."There's a difference between fear and respect," he sighed."I insist. The vampires are bloodsucking creatures; I've heard of the horrible things they do to fragile humans. We agreed not to kill humans or even frighten them, but the vampires steal them off the street in the middle of the night." Vampires are known to mostly appear at night due to their hate for the sun. The sun does something bad to them; it drains their energy or something. I don't know the entire truth. But the vampires are midnight creatures. The king turned back to his work with
Sarah's POV "Mistress, It'd be best if you returned to your quarters," as if he didn't understand any of my questions, Beta Waylen groaned these words as he made for his door.He unlocked his door and then took his gaze to Atlas. "Do I have to repeat myself?" He stared at him.Seeing this, I came to Atlas's aid, "Beta Waylen! Stop; don't speak to him with that tone; it's not right. And you haven't answered my questions; you promised not to ignore me. You have to answer every one of my questions," I insisted.Exhausted, he returned his gaze to me, "What do you want?""We need to talk.""There's really nothing to talk about, and I'm really exhausted.""I don't care; we have been waiting for a while now," I argued. "What do you want?""Atlas wants to speak to you; he might have something to say," I say, signaling to Atlas."Atlas, tell him everything you want to say to him; he'll do them," I encouraged him."He won't," Atlas shook his head."He will; he's waiting, or do you want us to
Writer's POV Next FridayBeta Waylen was sitting at his usual spot in a bar when Genesis walked in, just like last time; she approached him and sat down beside him. It was late, and there were a few people present in the bar, so Genesis didn't have much problem getting embarrassed by Beta Waylen."Hey," she called and softly touched him, "why are you so lost in thought?" When Beta Waylen noticed her, he let out an exhausted sigh before standing to his feet."You can leave if you like, but I'll keep coming here every Friday. I'll keep coming to you. Are you sure you want to play this hide-and-seek game? Why not hear me out? I promise not to bother you anymore if you just listen to me," as Beta Waylen tried to leave, Genesis spoke to him.Hearing her words, Beta Waylen hesitated for a second, then he continued his journey. When Genesis saw this, she stood up on her feet. "I know you too well; I know the club you frequent; I know all your outing schedules; I'll keep interrupting your bu
