Existence versus Living.
Old Mr. Wickers enunciated the three words while he talked in front of the class, putting emphasis on the first and the last words before fixing his stern gaze on Leigh.
“Leigh Michaels,” he commanded, “How do you differentiate the two? ”
Leigh kept her gaze on the floor as sweat beads on her forehead. She hated it when she had to talk in front of the classroom, drawing attention to herself. Attention might be the most lacking thing in her college life, but she was grateful for being anonymous.
“If you don’t know the answer, just go back to your seat. No one will mind.” A fake saccharine voice she was all too familiar with said, cutting through her anxiety.
Leigh looked at the blond girl who spoke just now. While the pretty blond was pretending to study her well-manicured fingers, her face carried a bored expression that belied the sharp tongue. Her name was Regina Clark. She was Baybridge University’s queen bee and she had recently come to pick on Leigh as her latest target.
Regina is a social butterfly. She loves to parade around the university with her minions. Very recently, she was hogging the Baybridge University's social media grapevine because she had snagged its resident ultra rich bad boy Rocky Bolton. A sardonic smile crossed Leigh Michaels’s striking features but the laughter erupting around her wiped it off her face.
“Get back on your seat Michaels.” Another classmate shouted.
Someone threw a paper airplane and it landed perfectly on her feet. The class erupted into giggles as more crumpled papers were thrown her way.
Leigh tried to dodge the papers thrown her way. She put her arms out to deflect them, all the while wishing for the floor to open and gobble her. This is so embarrassing!
She darted a glance at Regina, and saw her triumphant grin.
It was enough for Leigh to change her mind. She squared her shoulders and dug her feet to the floor.
“Quiet!” Professor Wickers tapped his legendary ruler on the board and instantly silence descended upon them.
“Clean this mess class or I will fail each and everyone of you this semester.” He threatened sternly.
The class moved in unison as everyone picked a piece of crumpled paper and deposited it to the nearest trash bin.
When everyone has returned to their seats, Mr. Wickers runs a critical eye over his class before turning his attention back to Leigh, repeating his question.
The short break allowed Leigh to compose herself.
When she met the professor’s eye, he nodded at her. It was most indiscernible, but she was sure it was a nod. Encouraged, Leigh lifted her chin up and opened her mouth to answer.
“Existence is a state of being. It just means that a person exists while living is having the purpose to your existence.” Leigh said with confidence. That was what Prof. Wickers wrote in his paper and Leigh has read it before.
“Good.” Mr. Wickers nodded and told her to get back on her seat.
When she passed Regina, the latter darted a glacial look her way. She almost escaped to her seat, not noticing the admiration in Prof. Wickers eye.

When the bell rang signaling the end of the class, her classmates bolted from their seats like springboards and burst out of the classroom like loose cannon shooting in different directions, leaving her and a few handfuls behind.
Leigh collects her things from the table and while she puts them inside her bag, Sam, her room mate and college best friend walks up to her.
“Hey, did you do anything to annoy Regina? This is the second time this week she picked on you in class.” Sam whispered, nudging her from behind.
Leigh shook her head. She thought Regina was just being extra mean these days and did not think it was personal. But when Sam puts it that way, a frown appeared on Liegh’s forehead as she recalled incidents this week where Regina showed undisguised hostility towards her.
“I thought she’s just being her usual nasty self.” She replied.
Sam shook her head. “I don’t think so. Remember what happened the other day when you almost fell?” Sam jogged her memory back to the hallway incident. She and Sam were busy talking when someone bumped into her, she almost lost her footing. Thankfully, Sam was there to break her fall and steady her.
“I am sure it was just an accident.” She reasoned out since there has been no way she would blame Regina. Why would a popular person target her?
“You know that I don’t mix with their crowd.” She said dismissing Sam’s observation, but her face had suddenly gone pale. Did Regina know anything about her?
It was just a sudden thought which Leigh dismissed right away especially since Sam readily agreed with her excuse.
There is no way Regina would have an interest in a person like her and Sam. They both know the disparity between them and the likes of Regina. While she and Sam belong to the nondescript population of Baybridge University, Regina was not.
Regina belongs to the school’s who’s who - the popular ones. Not because of sheer talent or intellect, but more because she was very skillful in worming her way and attaching herself to the popular guys like Rocky Bolton, recently rumored to be her boyfriend.
“I think she fits Mr. Wickers’ lecture today. She’s actually the perfect example of a person who exists.” Sam snorted and they both broke out into peals of laughter.
When Leigh turned around, her eyes met Regina’s cold blue ones. She shivered at the venom she saw in there.
She slung the strap of her bag over her shoulder and nudged Sam so they could leave, but before they were able to do that, Regina’s minions swarmed around them.
The girls despite their poise were able to snag her arms and trapped them. They did the same to Sam.
Then, Regina circled around them and stopped in front of Leigh. “So you think you are better than me, bitch?” Regina asked sharply.
“What are you doing?” A stern voice came out from the door. It was Mr. Wickers.
Immediately, the hands that held Leigh and Sam’s arms slackened. While Leigh inspected the reddish marks on her skin, she heard one of Regina’s minions reported, blaming her.
“Leigh was gloating and putting us down because we weren’t able to answer your question earlier, Mr. Wickers.”
Sam was quick to counter in her defense.
“That's not true, Mr. Wickers. Leigh and I were minding our business when they jumped on us and bullied us.”
“Liar!” another one of Regina's cohorts cried.
“Enough!” Professor Wickers snapped, causing all of them to stop arguing.
Recognizing the seriousness on Professor Wickers’s face, Regina motioned with her head, silently ordering her minions to quit. Then, before anyone could react, Regina tossed her head, made an elegant three-hundred sixty degree turn like she was a runway model and stepped away from them, leaving her minions scrambling around to follow her lead.
Leigh heaved a sigh of relief while she watched them leave, she turned to say thank you to Mr. Wickers for saving her this second time.
“Aren’t you going to your next class?” Mr. Wickers remembered, and the two looked at each other in panicked expressions. They said goodbye to Mr. Wickers, swung their bags over their shoulders, and sprinted out of the classroom.
Leigh and Sam sprinted through the busy hallway, both looking frantic. Their next class is in the other building and it would take them at least ten minutes to get there.
“It’s that b*tch’s fault! If she did not harass us earlier, we wouldn’t be this late.” Sam put the blame on Regina.
Leigh turned her head around to tell her off or they would get into trouble in case Regina has eyes and ears on this building. She was so busy looking at Sam that she did not mind where she was going. It was just a second of not looking where she was going and then BAM! She ran right into a wall.
“Ouch!’ Leigh almost bent backwards at the force that hit her. A hand was quick to steady her, and she realized belatedly that it was not a wall she ran into, but a man’s hard wall of a chest.
She looked up and gasped almost inaudibly,
“Rocky….”
It was Rocky Bolton, Regina Clark’s rumored boyfriend.
Leigh groaned in her head at the unfortunate collision.
She heard him laugh. A deep rumble rolling from his chest that sent a familiar tingle run down her spine.
“Thought you have forgotten about me.” Rocky whispered in her ear, his cool minty breath, brushing her skin like a caress.
Leigh’s body stiffened, drawing her guards up. But then, Rocky’s thumb brushed her skin sensuously. She was not sure if he was doing it intentionally to distract her but it was effective. She almost purred.
In the end, she clamped her teeth on her lower lip and turned her head around to distract herself, but to her horror, she found that everyone’s staring right at her with a look of condemnation on their faces. It was like everyone caught her with her hands inside a cookie jar.
There was total silence in the hallway. The usual buzzing has stopped as everyone’s eyes were fixed on her.
Leigh realized belatedly that since Rocky is Regina’s rumored girlfriend, and Regina is the university’s darling girl, this meeting will not bode well for her.
Alarmed, Leigh pulled her body away from Rocky, but she only managed to get a few inches away from him because Rocky wouldn't let go.
“Get off me!” She hissed at him, stunned at the blatant show they were giving for the gossip mongers.
Instead of following her order, Rocky pulled her toward him and wrapped both arms around her until his hands met on her lower back.
“Rocky!” She gasped, petrified at the commotion they were creating.
She felt trapped, but she wouldn’t let Rocky get the upper hand. Leigh lifted her right foot, ready to stomp on Rocky’s feet when she heard that fake saccharine voice again calling Rocky’s name.
“Regina.” She whispered, her face growing pale.
Hello Dear Reader, As you may be aware, this is my third exclusive on Good Novel. Hope you will enjoy reading this story as much as I enjoyed writing it. Love, J Cruz
Leigh froze while she watched Regina walk towards them. Then She looked at Rocky who was unfazed by the mention of Regina’s name. He still held her close, but not as tight as before. There was total silence around, and like in a trance Leigh wasn’t able to move her feet away, her eyes fixed in horror at Regina Clark coming towards them. Then, she was pulled abruptly out of Rocky’s arm, breaking her off from her catatonic state. Leigh looked up and saw Sam looking annoyed. “We’re going to be late for class!” Sam intoned and grabbed her by the hand. Together, they dashed out of the hallway. Leigh took one last look at Rocky Bolton, surprised he did not move an inch from where she had left him. Their eyes met. He was watching her!She turned her head around, embarrassed while she let Sam drag her away. “What are you doing with that girl?’ She heard Regina confronted Rocky. She wanted to stop to hear what Rocky would say, but Sam was dragging her. They were too far out to he
In exasperation, Leigh unconsciously put her fingers to massage her temples.“Rocky!’ She cried outraged.A mischievous smile crossed over Rocky’s face. It appeared like he was enjoying her discomfort so much, like he always does. She and Rocky had a complicated relationship. They were born on the same day to parents who were best friends since college. Since they were children, it was already drummed into their heads that they would marry one day. But she and Rocky do not share their parents’ sentiments. They do not want to be married to each other for the simple reason that they hated each other. Yes, they hated each other. The hate relationship started when they were five. But before that, Leigh remembered how they fought like mad cats and dogs. There was never peace with both of them around. They bicker with each other and annoy each other so much that when they reached their fifth birthday, the war between them had become so severe it wedged a gap that was never broken dow
There was stunned silence for a full minute, both moms looked at her in stupefaction.“You did what?’ Aunt Evelyn finally asked. She was the first one to recover. “But why?” Her mom piped in. She looked at Leigh trying to take it all in before her gaze narrowed and zeroed in on Rocky. Leigh knew what’s going through her mother’s head. “I want to live close to school.” She said, exonerating Rocky from her mom’s accusing eyes. She wanted to come clean, but not at the expense of Rocky. “This is more convenient. It is also closer to the University.” Clearly her mom would not understand.“I wanted to live like a normal college girl would.” Leigh finally replied in a meek voice. It was not often she blatantly disobeyed her parents. She knew that like any other parents, hers only wanted the best for her. “Don’t tell me you’re working?” A scandalized look appeared on her mother’s forehead. She looked so horrified that Leigh had to look at the floor before mumbling her reply. “I
“What? No!” Leigh cried in protest. What surprised her was the knowledge that she was not alone. Another voice, a male one cried the same with her, surprising both their mothers. Not used to Rocky’s hard voice when speaking with her, Aunt Evelyn looked affronted. Leigh could feel where this would go, so she decided to retreat to the second floor of the house to rest. But before she leaves, she sees Rocky quietly grab Auntie Evelyn into a hug in silent remorse. Auntie Evelyn, like Leigh and her mom standing at five foot two, only comes up to Rocky’s shoulder when they stand together. They looked cute especially when Auntie Evelyn opened her arms wide to receive Rocky’s embrace. She was on the stairs when she witnessed the sweet moment between mother and son causing Leigh and her mother to exchange a look of happiness and indulgence. Leigh shook her head, sighing to herself. For all his bad-boy image, Rocky is a sweet boy to his mother. “Mom, aunt Leslie, can you let Leig
Leigh's trip down memory lane left her tired. She did not realize that she had gone off to sleep. By the time she came through, it was nighttime. She slowly opened her eyes, feeling a weight on her waist. She was laying on her side, facing the window. She realized it was already nighttime when she saw darkness spread through the skies, mottled with splotches of orange and red. She checked her watch and noted that she had slept for hours! She tried to get up from the bed, but the weight on her waist stopped her. She groped around her waist to check what was keeping her down and almost cried in horror seeing a man’s large hands.Alarmed, she threw the hand that was nestling comfortably on her waist and bolted from the bed. Then she twisted her body around to glare at the man sleeping beside her. “What the h*ll, Rocky!” She lashed out.The noise she created did not bother Rocky, who was still sleeping soundly on his side of the bed. A chagrined look crossed her face when she reme
A moment passed by without anyone moving. It was like being caught in a tableau for a few tense moments. It was Auntie Evelyn who recovered first.“What is happening here? Are you finally making up or making out?" Aunt Evelyn asked in her no-nonsense, straightforward way, breaking the silence around them. Then, before Leigh could deny anything, her mom added, "Are we intruding?" Looking quite horrified in the process. Leigh could feel heat rush up to her cheeks all the way to her hairline at the suggestion. She thought she already made herself clear earlier, but it appears both mothers are not buying her explanation. They still think about what they believe. She opens her mouth to correct the misassumption, but right about the same time, Rocky moves, bolting up from his lying position on the floor like he just got out of a trance. The sudden movement caught Leigh off-guard and caused her to lose her balance. Without anything to hold on to break her fall, she prepared herself
The sound of Rocky’s laugh grated in her ears. Leigh walked faster. She did not want to hear any more sound coming from him. The more she walked away, the better her mood became.Leigh stopped at the first door she passed by and tried on the lock. It was closed. She continued walking and tried opening the next door she saw. It was also locked. She walked further into the hall and found another one which turned out to be locked, too. When she reached the end of the hall, she pulled her suitcase up and let the handle go in resignation. All the rooms on this floor were all locked. It was like the owner did not want her here. No room was prepared for her.She turned her head around to shoot a piercing glare at Rocky’s room before angrily grabbing back the handle of her suitcase. Then, she made a three-hundred-sixty-degree turn and stomped back angrily to where she started - back in Rocky’s room. ‘Rocky planned all of this!’ Her mind seethed. When she reached Rocky’s room, she re
Leigh propped her hands on the bed and leaned back so as not to give too much pressure on her injured foot. Then, she scooted near the headrest. She wanted to lie down for a while. It was this time that the door to Rocky’s room opened, disrupting her from the motion of laying down. She watched Rocky run toward his bathroom. When he emerged he was holding a clear zip-lock pouch full of ice and a towel. He sat on the bed near her feet and very gently raised the injured one, wrapping a towel underneath before putting the ziplock pouch on the reddened sole. “It’s for the swelling.” Leigh nodded and let him apply the iced package to her foot. She felt instant relief and sighed. “You have to put on the ice every two to three hours to alleviate the pain.” He told her when he saw her nodding her head off. She could not help it. His tender ministrations and the silence around them make her sleepy. It was a relief from their usual bickering. After almost fifteen minutes, Rock

It was a glorious day. It was a Sunday, his grand wedding day! After Leigh agreed to marry him again, they ran back to the other house to tell everyone. They were greeted with congratulations, hugs, kisses, and warm pats on the back.“I want us to be married right away,” Rocky told their parents, and Leigh agreed. She does not need a grand wedding. She only needed Rocky, Axel, their families, and friends to be at the wedding. Her father agreed because he wanted to leave as early as possible with her mom for their tour. It was Rocky’s mother who objected. “I wanted a grand wedding, Rocky.”While the parents argued and discussed the wedding, Rocky dragged her to her feet. They slipped out of the house without their parents noticing. “Where are we going?” She asked, confused when he bundled her into his waiting car. “Let them plan a grand wedding, but I want to marry you now. I can’t wait. I want you to wear my ring on your finger when I make love to you for the first time after f
“Aw, Axel, my man!” Rocky groaned before nuzzling her neck to cover his red-from-arousal face. Leigh giggled, tickled as his breath fanned her skin. Axel chose that moment to swing on his father’s back and ride him like a horse. They almost toppled over to the bed, pressing Leigh if not for Rocky’s quick thinking. He braced his hand on the bed for support, allowing Leigh to scoot farther from the two. She laughed when he saw Rocky’s insufferable look but knew he was faking it. He loves playing with his son. She blew him a kiss, and he caught it in the air before placing his hand on his lips, making smooching sounds that had her double up in laughter. In the short time they were together, Leigh found out about Rocky’s playful side, something that surprised her. He used to tease her, sparking her anger that would later explode into verbal fights. She realized Rocky did not know how to treat her back then. He was unsure of her feelings as she was unsure of him. But when the
Stepping out of her father's office, they saw Axel waiting at the visitor’s lounge with Gemma, her father’s secretary. Everyone in her father’s office was surprised when Axel shouted, “Mommy!” Axel was like a human dynamo. He hurled himself at Leigh, but when Leigh caught him, he squirmed and launched himself at his father next.“Daddy!” Rocky Bolton smiled, snagging his son mid-air to catch him and swing him up to ride his shoulders. “Who were you with?” “Grandma,” Axel said. Then, Rocky pulled Leigh close. Together, they walked out of Adam Michaels's floor. When they passed by employees, Leigh could not help tensing up, feeling shy all of a sudden. She was reminded of the spectacle she made at the facade of the building. By now, she was sure everybody already knew about her and Rocky Bolton especially since her son took after his father a lot. Everyone who sees them together would not mistake the connection. On the other hand, Rocky had a different interpretation of the cu
Adam Michaels looked like he was ready to throw a fit.He was flushed red in anger. His strides were long and swift, with hands clenched to the sides while Leigh, Rocky, and Sam followed him. They invited curious stares, looking like a mini-parade on their way to the elevator bay, except everyone steered clear of them. The murderous look on Adam Michaels’ face was enough to scare people away. They rode the elevator with Adam bringing the front while his daughter Leigh, Rocky, and Sam followed like meek children who got into trouble and were awaiting punishment at the principal’s office. They stopped on his floor. His secretary was shocked to see him followed by his daughter, a man she presumed to be the infamous Rocky Bolton because she had been tipped earlier about the scuffle at the entrance, and Sam Adams.Mr. Michaels, just when he was about to enter his room, changed his mind at the last s
“Where have you been?” Rocky slowed down upon hearing the familiar voice of his mother.A smile broke his lips when he saw his parents sitting on the L-shaped couch in the living room, waiting for him.“Mom, dad. What brought you here?” He asked, surprised at the unexpected arrival of his parents. It had been too long since he last saw them.“Are you just going in? Where have you been?”Evelyn Bolton took a long look at her son and knew Rocky had spent the night elsewhere. She walked over to him, suspiciously taking a whiff of his neck.“No trace of alcohol. Hmm.”
Rocky drove fast, pressing on the throttle to accelerate their speed upon learning from Leigh that Axel was crying. “Did something happen?” He asked worriedly, thinking his son needs to see a doctor. Leigh frowned absently at him. “No. He woke up and did not find me there.” Rocky covered her hand with his. Leigh sounded guilty. He, too, felt partially guilty that they had to leave Axel, but not about the talk. They needed that talk. In no time, they reached the Michaels' home. Before Rocky could turn the engine off, the door to the passenger side opened, and Leigh got out. She rushed back to see Axel and stopped when she found her son huddled in the corner of the plant box, bawling his eyes out. Something twitched inside as guilt and shame washed over her. A mother can't help feeling that way because, for a mom, a child's welfare will always come first. “Where did you go?” Adam Michaels cried when she gathered Axel in her arms and hoisted him up. Rocky was hot on her he
They were both panting when they both came up for air. Leigh looked down to see Rocky’s head thrown back and shutting his eyes as he let his face ride her orga*m.It was a huge turn-on. Leigh found her hands fisting Rocky's glorious ink-black hair to drag his face up her body. His lips made a teasing line from the apex of her thighs up to her chest. He nuzzled her neck before his lips finally landed on hers for an ardent kiss. “I love you.” Rocky breathed.Leigh purred her contentment before pushing him off her, reversing their roles. The declaration of love awakens the aggressor in her. She attacked his lips as the predator who wanted to give him full service. Rocky saw her intent, eyes blazing hot coals, and declined the offer. “No.”“But, you haven’t…” Leigh said, pointing to his hard c*ck that needed instant gratification and release. Rocky quickly covered himself before giving Leigh her nightie, undie, and terry cloth robe.“What the h*ll, Rocky? Why are you denying m
“What did you do, man?” Kade was already waiting in his office when he arrived. Rocky plopped on the couch next to Kade and tiredly leaned his head on its back. “I am desperate, man. The sooner I get my wife and son, the better for my peace of mind.” “But you are doing it all wrong. You are inviting trouble from Michaels by doing this. And look!” Kade showed him a viral post an hour ago. It was him! People are speculating, eagerly wanting to know the mystery that shrouded the entire event. Their curiosity whetted. They started asking questions as to why a well-known businessman like Rocky Bolton would appear in front of Michaels's building. “Some people think you are pulling a stunt like this as a business strategy. You wanted to gain leverage for your contracts.” Kade added, sounding concerned. Rocky shook his head, rubbing his hands through his hair in frustration. “I am at my wit's end, Kade. If I do not act right away Leigh and Axel might be taken away in a fl
