Danielle takes a peak around the curtain, scanning the crowd for the familiar face the she is looking for, but he is nowhere to be found in the sea of stranger's faces looking back at her. She is not surprised at all to find him missing. He has never been one to come to these things just to support her. That would mean that he would have to know about them.. or care, for that matter.
“We are up next, Dani.” Comes her best friend Melania Polk's voice from behind her. Her friend comes to stand beside her and Dani nods to acknowledge her words.
“Okay. Where is Lia? We need to get ready to go on.” Danielle asks her, looking around. Lia Baynor is her other best friend, the three of them are a small, close knit unit. She and Mel look around behind the stage until they find her by the curtain, talking to her mother.
Lia's mother, Laurel Baynor is a broadway performer and a minor actress. She was in a few movies back in the late seventies, early eighties when she was around their age. She was just fifteen when she got her big break playing an extra in some horror movie. After that, she only got more popular as she grew older. Now, she is well known around the world in her late thirties.
She had thought that her career was over when she got pregnant by a co-star at nineteen. She thought that the two of them could handle it together, but he ran out on her to persue his career. He told her that he would never let a mistake like that get in his way.
So she was forced to have the baby alone, but she did not let it jeopardize her future career, as he had assumed having a baby would. She got a couple of au pairs and nanny, leaving them to raise her daughter while she was off becoming a star.
That meant that she had not been there much for her daughter when she was younger but she is trying to make up for it now, by supporting her in everything that the girl does.
Like showing up to the school's talent show on a Friday Night, even though Dani is sure that she had far more glamorous thing to do. But Laurel put her daugther first above all else, coming to support her, which Dani was glad to see.
That is more than Dani can say about her father, Fredrick Millman. Or Fred, as his associates and business colleagues call him. Of course they would call him by a friendly name. They see him all the time, so they would not feel stiff and awkward around him. Not like she did.
But it is hard to be comfortable around someone that you do not know. Even if that man is your father. Nature formed the connection between them, but genetics is where it begins and ends. The are two strangers that share DNA and a home. They have nothing else between them, certainly not a relationship.
“Lia!” Dani calls out to her friends and Lia turns to smile at the two of them, beckoning them over to join her and her mother.
Her mother, a tall, willowy blonde with ethereal beauty smiles wide at the approaching girls. “Hello ladies. You all look so amazing!”
“Thank you, Miss Baynor!” Dani tells her and she winks at her in return.
“Laurel, please, Danielle. You can call me Laurel.”
Dani smiles at her and nods. “Alright, I will go get back to my seat in the front row but you girls go out there and break a leg!” Laurel tells them, pulling them all in for a hug.
Danielle returns it, not realizing until that moment how much she had missed having someone show her any sort of affection. Other than her boyfriend, Rick, who tries to show her too much affection anytime that they are alone. He gets a bit carried away with the touching, then gets angry when she pulls away from him.
“Dani! Mel! Lia! Come on! You three are up!” Their classmate Paris Lanette calls out to them. She is running the show and she takes the job seriously. Very seriously.
“Alright, ladies. Looks like it's show time!” Mel says and they all chuckle, heading in the direction that Paris just disappeared.
The three of them run over to take their positions on stage. Dani scratches at the wig on her head, which is bothering her. It itches so bad. But she has to wear the short blonde wig to look like Chynna Phillips. Lia and Mel wear wigs as well to help them look like Carnie and Wendy Wilson. Together they make up the new pop group Wilson Phillips.
“Give it up for Danielle Millman, Lia Baynor and Melania Polk!” Mr. Ratcliffe announces in his booming voice, adding flair to their names. He adds flair to everything that he says or does. It is part of his niche as being a drama teacher. Everything that he does, he does with pizazz!
Dani bites back an amused smile.
The large curtains slide back to reveal the thousands of strangers all staring at the girls. Dani's stomach clenches but she fights to ignore it. Her mom never suffered from stage fright and she is trying to be fearless like she was. Besides, Dani knows that she is right there with her. She has always believed that her mother is her guardian angel now.
Dani takes a step forward, to where the tape is on the stage to mark where she should be standing. The girls stand behind her, one on each side. The opening strains of the song ring out loudly through the large theatre.
She has a mic in front of her and she makes sure that she does not stand so close that it causes feedback. She hears her que in the music and she takse a deep breath and begins to sing.
“I know there's pain..”
She hears the girls echo the words behind her in harmony.
“Why do you lock yourself up in these chains?”
“These chains..” Mel and Lia sing in sync..
“No one can change your life except for you.. don't ever let anyone step all over you.. Just open your heart and your mind..”
“Mmm..” The girls harmonize.
“Is it really fair to feel this way inside..?”
She hears the music change and she begins to dance, swaying along to the beat. Everyone in the audience claps their hands to the music as the three of them put on a performance of a lifetime.
“Woah..”
“Some day somebody's gonna make you wanna turn around and say goodbye.. until then baby are you gonna let 'em hold you down and make you cry?” She looks out in the audience and she nearly misses the next words.
“Don't you know..”
She sings on autopilot, as she watches him walk up the stairs towards the exit. Somehow she is able to pull her thoughts back to the moment at hand and she finishes her performance with a big smile on her beautiful face. As the three of them bow, amid a roaring applause, she is too distracted to enjoy the fact that everyone seemed to enjoy their efforts.
She rushes off stage ahead of her friends and she turns left to go out into the school halls, ignoring the sound of them calling out to her. She looks around but she does not see him anywhere. Where could he have gone when he left in the middle of the show?
With a shrug, she begins to walk to the bathroom, since she had to pee since before she even went on stage. As she passes the men's bathroom, she hears groans coming from inside. She pauses, corncerned that someone might be hurt or in distress in there.
She can not exactly just bust up in to the men's restroom just because she heard a noise. So she knocks. If anyone is in there, they would surely respond. She hears an agonized moan, which urges her to knock once again, a bit more frantically.
When she does not receive an answer, she pushes open the door slowly, in case there are men in their who will get angry when they see her. She feels all kinds of weird about going in there, but she is concerned.
The first thing that she notices about the ornate rest room is that it is just as nice as the girl's room, but it does not smell as good. The women's toilet room smells of perfumes at any given time. It just smells like cleaner in this room.
Looking around, at first she sees nothing out of place. But she hears heavy breathing and groaning, as if the person is in pain. Is some poor man having a heart attack? Should she be dialing 9-1-1?
As she hears the rhythmic slapping of skin on skin, she wonder if someone is being attacked. Is their a fight going on in here? I someone getting hit? “Hello? Are you okay in there?”
“Shit!”
She hears the muttered curse and she straightens her spine. She knows that voice all too well. She moves forward, passing unused stalls with open doors. When she reaches the last stall, which is the largest, she places her palm flat on the metal door and gives it a push.
The door swings open slowly with a creak and she gasps at what she sees.
He stands there before her with his pants and underwear around his ankles, with his shirt pushed up to beneath his neck. She is only spared getting an eyeful of his anatomy by the leg that is wrapped around his narrow hips.
Amber Wagner's skirt and panties lay in a heap on the floor, as she leans against the wall of the bathroom stall wearing just a bra and nothing else. Her head is tipped back as she moans in pleasure. His hand is on the lacy cup of her bra, squeezing the soft flesh beneath the fabric and Dani's stomach swirls with nausea at the sight. Just last night he had been trying to touch her like that.
“What the actual hell?”
He turns his head to look at her, stilling the relentless thrusting of his hips. He knows that he has been caught. She can see the fear and the worry in his eyes as he looks at her. Amber on the other hand wears a satisfied grin. She knew exactly what she was doing. As Dani stands there frozen with shock and disgust, she meets the eyes of Rick, her boyfriend. She glares.
Make that her ex boyfriend.
Dani spins around on her heels and takes off running, pulling the rest room door open with force, startling an older gentleman waiting on the other side to come in. “Woah.” “Dani!” She ignores the sound of Rick calling out to her. “Excuse me.” She mumbles at him as she rushes past. Her words come out choked through the tears. She can not believe that he was screwing Amber freaking Wagner. The biggest, nastiest slut in the senior class. Actually, she is the bigg
Dani runs from the office and hits the button for the elevator, which thankfully opens up immediately. Once she is closed up inside of the elevator car, she leans back against the wall and covers her eyes, letting out a little scream of frustration. “Oh my God!” She can believe what she just witnessed, but she does know one thing for sure; She wishes that she could pluck her eyeballs out so that she never has to see another person having sex for as long as she lives. She was too disgusted to even think straight.
Dani has longed to hear those words for years now, but she knows that he does not mean them like that. Still, she feels a little pitch of excitement in the bottom of her belly at the thought. “I really don't want to impose on you or your roommates..” She begins but he waves her words away. “Yeah, don't worry about that. It's just my cousin, Jay. He is probably at his girlfriends, because he seems to spend all of his time there these days.” Eddy says as he pulls the car to a stop in a parking spot that says reserved. She hopes that by reserved, it means for him, because she would hate for him to lose
Eddy drops Dani off at her house the next morning, after the spent a long night talking about everything that happened to her the night before. He tells her how she can call the school and see how she can go about getting accepted to the school. Her father is not at home when she arrives, which does not surprise her in the least. In fact, she would have been shocked out of her sock had he been home one a Saturday morning. He has only been there twice in the last six years since her mother passed away. It used to be a tradition of theirs to have a large brunch, with belgian waffles, fresh fruit,
“Dean Winchell's office, of Meesler Boarding School. May I help you?” “I am looking to enroll my child in your school.” Dani blurts out quickly, feeling self-concious and awkward about the lie. Please do not realize that I am a teenager and hang up on me, she silently begs the cranky sounding woman on the other end. “Our girl's school, Southwood, is at maximum capacity and has a two year waiting list. If your student is a female, I regret to inform you that this will be a short conversation. But if you have a son, we have very few openings available, as we recently
It took a couple of hours for PJ to get all of the paperwork in order but by the time that he was done, Dani had everything that she needed to start school. Her name was now Daniel Millman. Danny for short. Thankfully she has been answering to Dani for years so it won't get too confusing for her. “Dani..” “Hmm?” She asks Eddy, turning to face him. “What are you going to do about your looks?” He asks her and she frowns.
The day has come for her to go to her new school. As a him. Not a her. So, she is feeling some massive anxiety about that, but she is pushing it down. She wanted this. She can do this. She has to. She has already done so much to be ready for this. Such as going shopping with Eddy for boy's clothing. He had taken her back to his apartment and had her put on her wig and the stomach band. He had given her a large ace bandage for her boobs, which she had wrapped tightly over her bra. With that and the band, she just looked like a plump guy. Combined with a pair of Eddy's jeans and an old AC/DC
Dani spends the time that Eddy is gone with his father alone in the room, putting her clothes away. She brought clean sheets and her blanket that she wanted, because Eddy had told her that the ones they provide feel like hospital sheets. This was pretty much like a dorm room so she had brought a few things along to make it feel more home like. Such as a huge box of junk food. A mini fridge that Eddy had to bring up later. She had brought some things that she could find only in New York. She had brought two different kinds of toiletries. Shampoo and conditioner that was unscented and some men's body wash for through out the w
November 25, 1999Three Years Later Asher looks around the room for his wife, but she is lost in the sea of people. Their family and friends have only been there about fifteen minutes and already he is regretting his and Dani's decision to host Thanksgiving in their new home. But Dani had been so excited when they finally got the renovations done, after three months of contractors and paint samples.
Dani waits at the closed door until someon gives her a signal. Her hands are shaking and she is tapping her foot. A hand grasp hers tightly. “Nervous?” “No, not at all. Impatient. I am ready to get in there.” Dani says and he nods. “It shouldn't be long now.” Just then the doors open with a florish and Dani gets ger first sight of it all. Her wedding. She sees all of the people filling the seats and
Asher sits across from Fred Millman in a slightly awkward silence, because he does not know how to start the conversation that he wants to have. He knows that Fred already knows everything going on. He and Dani are close, so she tells him everything that happens in her life. “Mr. Millman-” “Call me Fred. If you are going to be my son-in-law, you should probably call me Fred.” He says dryly and Asher winces. “Ahout that.. I wanted to say- I'm sorry that I did
Asher looks back at Dani, knowing that she is nervous. She has nervously chattered the whole way here, being worse than their sons. He smiles when she catches his hand and asks, “They founded the publishing company, right?” “Yes. They put the A & J in AJS Publishing. Adrien and Janice Steele. They started it nearly twenty years ago. I worked their off and on in my teens, but last year when I graduated college, they gave me the company. It was between that, a technology company, a medical supply company or a hotel.” “That is an odd assortment of companies.” Dani tells him.
“I checked on the boys and they are okay. They're both still sound asleep.” Dani feels the bed move as Asher joins her. When he had left the bed a few minutes ago, she had no idea what he was doing. A part of her thought that maybe he was trying to sneak out on her. He moves over until his bare body is flush against her naked back and he puts his arm over her waist, anchoring her to him. She can feel his warm breath on the back of her neck. When she does not respond to him, he kisses the back of her neck.
Asher tells his uncle all about his plans with 'Holly from the second floor' and Leo nods along, apparently approving this choice, while Dani's heart breaks inside of her chest. She waited too long. Asher has already moved on. Asher notices Dani slowl withdrawing from the conversation and he assumes that it is because she is tired. He knows that the twins are as well. When she moves over to sit with the boys, casually talking to Jace, Leo leans forward. “So, kids, huh?” He asks and Asher knows that means that he wants the full story.
Dani trails along behind Asher as he walks a few step ahead of her, holding a boy by each hand. Nik is dressed as a teddy bear and Nate is dressed as a lion. Nate has a drawn on brown nose and whiskers thanks to a brown eyeliner pencil. Nik wanted his face colored on too, so she drew him a brown nose as well. With their fuzzy suits on, they both look so cuddlely that she could not stop hugging them. “Are we almost there, Daddy?” Nate asks Asher looking up at him with tired eyes. “Are you worn out, buddy?” Asher asks him and the child nods.
Dani rewipes the table with the wet washcloth for the thirs time; not because it is sticky but because she is stalling. She just will not admit that to herself because then she would have to dig deep enough to admit to herself just why it is that she is avoiding Eddy. And she does not have to dig deep to admit why, because she knows the reason. Asher. That morning when she had woke up and seen a peacefully sleeping Asher beside her, it had just felt to right. It had felt like old times between them and she had been con
Asher did not want to go home. He wanted to stay with his boys. They had supper together, then he and Dani had given them a bath. He read them two stories with a lot of character voices which the boys loved. Even Dani was laughing. This is the fourth night this week and they were together three nights last week. But it is not enough. Because at the end of the night he still has to go home to his lonely apartment across town. Each night the boys still ask him why he is leaving. Why their Daddy isn't staying their with them, with mommy. They just tell them that it's because daddy's house is closer to his work, which is easier for him.
