THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC4
IRIS
I decided na huwag munang umuwi. Maaga pa naman. Besides, rush hour ngayon. Ayokong makipag-siksikan sa mga jeep, sayang outfit.
I went to the library para magpalamig and para na rin mag-research. I seated at the far end dahil walang masyadong tao roon. There were also a bunch of boys at the middle table, nakatutok sila sa mga cellphones nila, obviously mga nag lalaro ang mga 'to ng mobile legends.
I didn't bother chatting Kaia for our assignment sa Media Laws dahil natatandaan ko pa naman. I pick-up my phone and made a quick research about the constitution.
I brought my wallet and phone with me and went straight to the canteen to buy waffles—my dinner for tonight. I don't normally eat heavy meals at night. Nabasa ko kasi sa isang site na huwag kakain nang marami sa gabi, so I obliged.
I smiled when I saw na hindi pa nagpa-pack-up si kuya sa Belgian waffles.
But tonight, thank God, may dalawa pa.
"Dalawang chocolate, kuya."
There's this one time that I bought waffles during vacant then pagbalik ko sa room pinagtawanan ako ni Kaia kasi puro chocolate yung damit ko. Nag slide pababa sa top ko yung filling without me even realizing it because I was busy munching my waffles! Nakakahiya.
I exited the canteen and ready to call it a night. But while walking towards the library, I heard commotions. Nag U-turn ako from lib then follows the source of the noises. I found people at the main walkway; kung saan mo makikita ang mga bulletin boards ng mga orgs. I immediately recognized the SC Officers because I saw Joaquin talking to one of his officers.
One factor daw to encourage new students to join an organization is through bulletin boards. Kaya pinaghahandaan daw talaga ito dito.
I was busy peeking when I saw someone walking towards me.
"Hi!"
Ako nga talaga ang pakay niya.
"Hello," I replied, nonchalant.
Siya 'yung kausap kanina ni Joaquin.
"Gusto mo manuod sa amin?" he offered then pointed at his orgmates.
"Uh, no."
"Then why are you here?"
"May narinig akong ingay; hinanap ko kung saan," I mumbled while peeking behind him.
"Oh okay," was his response and then he scratched the back of his head.
"I was actually gonna go home. So gotta go," I said then I turned my back on him.
"Wait, you're Iris, right?" he trailed before I even began walking.
I faced him again, and with my brows arched, I asked, "How did you know?"
He just shrugged, "Dean. And Dean asked me to tour you around."
I raised my brows yet again.
Nang una si Joaquin, ngayon naman ito? Ang hilig mang-utos ni Dean ah.
"Bakit daw?"
"Because, uh, you're a transferee?"
He's not sure?
I looked at my watch, it's only 6:15 pm. Maaga pa naman.
"Pero gabi na, may makikita pa ba ako?" I queried because it's true.
"Other buildings? Have you been to the Artemis Building?"
"No."
"Then let's go there."
"Okay."
"I'm Akin Gonzales, by the way. Student Council's Vice President," he introduced habang naglalakad kami.
Why am I surrounded by SC Officers?
"Iris," I replied. Not further giving him my full name.
Akin toured me around the Artemis Building—the new building of SVU dedicated to Architecture students. Dito nila ipapaskil ang mga award-winning pieces of Archi students. Aside from the gallery, may mga rooms din na pinagawa sa kanila. I even saw students exiting their rooms and some students resting in the lounge.
Bakit walang ganito ang Comm?
I shrugged.
Another program favoritism to discuss.
He even told me the history of St. Valentine University.
I tittered.
"Nope. But I believed in ghosting," he replied and I laughed.
What the fuck! Pati 'yon na-segue niya.
We were laughing about his experience of ghosting girls and girls ghosting him when we heard someone calling his name.
"Angela needs your help," Joaquin piped in.
Akin looked at me. I looked at him.
"Go. Uuwi na rin ako," I shooed him.
"You sure? Do you want me to walk you at the gate? Gabi na."
I looked at Joaquin. He seemed annoyed.
"Wag na. Balik ka na doon. Thanks for the tour. Bye!"
I waved my hands to them at mabilis na tumalikod.

Last Wednesday, our discussion was interrupted by these group of students. Kaia said that those are our seniors—The CommSortium, short for Communication Consortium. And this year kailangan nila ng mga new officers kasi maraming graduating sa kanila.
Kita mo 'to!
Kahapon kasi wala kaming ma-upuan ni Kaia, so we've decided na dito na lang muna kumain for a while.
Habang nakapila ako sa station, I saw Akin waving his hands on me.
"Oh, let me help."
"Thanks!" I thanked him while we were walking.
"No prob."
"Wala kang class?" tanong ko kasi iniwan niya mga kaklase niya sa loob.
"Mamaya pa. I was just having lunch with my classmates."
"Na iniwan mo..." I continued.
He chuckled, "Kapag bumalik ako sa kanila, hindi mo mabibitbit lahat 'to."
"May point ka dyan."
I saw Kaia squinting her eyes nang makita niya ako. Then bigla rin lumaki nang makita niyang may kasama ako.
"Thanks ulit," I thanked Akin while he's putting down the paper bag.
"No worries enjoy your lunch!" he beamed while giving Kaia a nod.
"Why...are you...with...Akin?" Kaia interrogated when Akin was out of earshot.
"Bakit?" I asked because she looks weird.
"Do you know that he's the SC Vice-President?"
"Oo, sabi niya sa akin last tuesday."
"Magkasama kayo no'ng tuesday?! Bakit?!"
"Ano ba 'yan bakit ka sumisigaw?"
"Magkasama kayo no'ng tuesday, Iris? Ni Akin?" mahina ng tanong niya.
"Oo, sinamahan niya ako maglibot. Sa Artemis Building."
"Hala!"
"Inaano ka ba?" tanong ko kasi parang tanga ang mga expressions niya.
"Alam mo bang suplado ang lalaking 'yun?" judged niya.
"Parang hindi naman," I defended. Parang hindi naman kasi. Mas suplado pa nga ang President nila.
"Totoo! Hindi namamansin 'yun unless ka org niya or friends or classmates ka niya. Pero yung kagaya mong transferee—no offense—hindi ka niya papansinin. Ganun siya, Iris!"
"Ewan ko. Siya pa nga unang nag-approach sakin e!" I purred while opening my lunch.
"Weh? Totoo?"
"Pero, I swear, Iris, tanungin mo pa mga classmates natin—specifically si Josh kasi gustong gusto non si Akin simula first-year, pero hindi siya pinapansin ni Akin. Sobrang suplado pa," seryoso niyang sabi.
Parang gusto ko nang maniwala kay Kaia kasi kapag seryoso yung boses niya I knew that she was telling the truth.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC5IRISSa 16 years na pag-aaral ko, I learned that my teachers and my professors have a specific pattern to teach their students—especially kapag nagpapa-exam. With all those 16 years, I learned how to crack those codes."Natandaan mo pa ba yung mga discussions ni Mam? Minsan doon niya kinukuha yung quiz natin. Wala dyan lahat sa powerpoint. Nalaman ko yun nung first quiz natin," mahinang sabi ko kay Kaia dahil nasa library kami ngayon at nagrereview para sa second quiz namin sa Writing for Radio and Television mamaya.I scoured my brain for the possible questions our Prof will thrown to us. It is an oral recitation and our second quiz; True or false. Our Prof will ask us s
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC6IRISI woke up at the sound of an incoming call from my phone—probably Kaia's demanding voice na pumunta na ako ng school.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC7IRISWhen I was in high school, generally, Monday ang start ng mga exams, hanggang Friday na 'yon. However sa SVU, it depends on the professors kung kailan sila sa linggong ito magpapa-exam, usually Wednesday lagi ang start. We have two prelim exams waiting on our post. We have two hours allotted for this review. Wala kasi kaming class sa first subject namin.I opened my messenger and chatted Kaia on her location. Hindi na kasi nagreply.Iris De Leon:Where you?
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC8IRIS"Asan ka na?" I read the text on my phone dahil kanina pa siya nagvi-vibrate. That was Kaia. I've had enough with her incessant texts asking for my location kaya tiningnan ko na. Nakauwi na kasi siya. While I am still at the school kasi ako ang magpapasa ng prelim output namin sa DevComm. And there goes our DevComm subject. Halos mabaliw kami kahapon ng mga kaklase ko dahil kahapon lang din binigay ang prelim exam namin—which was to make a research about this certain topic our Prof provided for us. That was a 28-pages reading and we have to make a little research about it! For one day only—no scratch that—for one night only!I had to break my 8-hours slee
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC9IRIS"Good morning, Miss bad-ass transferee!"This is my first eye-rolling for this day. And I can't wait to count on how many eye rolling's I could make whenever I hear those phrases. Can't they just forget what happened and go back to our usual lives?"Shut up!"Kaia chuckled, "Ang cute nga eh, Miss bad-ass transferee," she quoted in the air.I rolled my eyes. That's two.Mukhang hindi na talaga ako patatahimikin ng araw na 'to dahil lahat nang makakasalubong namin ni Kaia ay bumubulong ngsiya 'yung si Miss bad-a
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC10IRISIt seems like everything is back to normal. I still get subtle looks from my schoolmates but its minimal compared last Monday where everyone made it their agenda to gossip what happened between me and the SC President. I need to be used to it. That's the only option. However in this class, since pugad ito ng mga engineering—and Joaquin belongs in this block, the teasing between me and Joaquin
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC11IRISToday is our General Assembly at walang class. Buong maghapon lang daw kami sa theater—according to Kaia, and I'm running late.I'm wearing a white mesh ruffled halter dress and crop top denim jacket and white shoes. I thanked myself that I chose to wear these matches because I was free to run. And I want to show my support to her. They were already looking at me. Ugh. Baka i-ambush interview pa ako ng dalawang 'to. Late na nga ako e!
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC12IRIS"Parang may hindi ka sinasabi sakin..." Kaia whispered. Paakyat na kami sa first class namin. Back to normal na naman ulit."Ano?" tanong ko."I'll give a clue: Iris and Joaquin."Lumingon ako sa kanya. Anong sa amin ni Joaquin? Tungkol pa rin ba 'to sa game?"Naka move-on na buong SVU sa 5 seconds namin ni Joaquin, Kaia. Mag move-on ka na rin."Kaia laughed, "Gaga, hindi kasi 'yon...and thanks for reminding that event again. Never ata akong makaka move-on dyan."I ro
“Miss Wilson, you may start with your introduction.” Our Prof said. Maingat kong pinasadahan ng kamay ko ang script na hawak ko for this debate. Naglalaman ito ng mga rebuttals ko tungkol sa film na Dancer in the dark. “This counter-argument will be divided into three sections: 1. Psychological aspect; 2. Culture and Economy; 3. Gender Perspective. These are the missing points I sought and heard while I was listening to your argument. I hope you’ll respect my counterpoints as much I respected yours,” was my starting point. I looked at Jacques, tamad siyang nakatingin sa akin. ‘Yung tipong sinasabi na ng mata niya na siya ang mananalo sa debate namin na ito.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGESC#3JOAQUIN – Iris’ birthday.“Joaquin…”Damn, if there’s one thing I want to hear for the rest of my life, it would be Iris’ voice. It is just so soft and tender and enchanting.“Yeah?”But she didn’t answer.“My love…”“I’m scared, Joaquin…”I looked down at her face only to see her teary-eyed eyes. She’s already looking at me.“Scared of what?”I a
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGESC#2IRIS – Revelation day. When Joaquin sleepover at Iris’s apartment. It’s so quiet.I feel like I’m inside a theater and I’m watching a horror film and everyone is silent because the scene is about to scare the shit out of us.That’s me and Joaquin right now. With Jacques in the middle, sleeping quietly.“Hey–”“You know what…”Yes, we open our mouths to talk at the same time. Cheesy as fuck, right?“Talk first,” I initiated.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGESC#1JOAQUIN – Finals. Last day. The day Iris flew to Paris.“Pres, pinapatawag na raw kayo ni Dean sa office niya,” Matt informed me after I entered the SC office.I nodded at him. When I reached my office, I immediately call Iris because we decided to go to Dean’s office together. And she still not texting me.“The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later.”My forehead creased. Iris would never shut off her phone just like that. Especially today that is very important for her.&

Ano pa ba?!”“Diba tatlo work mo?”“Yup!”“That’s why I asked which one. Baliw!”“Ugh, Iris, hater.
THE GOOD EQUAL | TGEEPILOGUEPART2IRIS"Hello, Joaquin?" I mumbled when I picked up the phone without looking at the caller."Anong Joaquin? Si Kaia 'to!"I instantly looked back at my phone to confirm it. Shit, I freaking thought it was Joaquin."Oh, bakit?""Wow! Ganyan na tono mo porket hindi ako si Joaquin? Grabe Iris, magkasama na kayo't lahat sa iisang bahay atat ka pa rin sa tawag niya?"I took a deep breath. Jusko talaga 'tong babaeng 'to!"Shut up! Sinabihan ko kasi siya na tawagan ako kapag may emergency—""Edi si Joaquin lang talaga katawagan mo? Kasi for sure hindi Joaqu
THE GOOD EQUAL | TGEEPILOGUEPART1JOAQUIN"Jacques, where's my kiss?" Iris called out our son. She's about to leave for work but Jacques is keeping her stilled in her spot. Iris then gave me a look."Where's Jacques?" she mouthed.I shrugged, which made her roll her eyes."Pakikuha na siya please, mala-late na ako," she pleaded. I crooked a smile before I rose from the couch and fetch our son from his room.It was already a routine. Iris always had a hard time going to her work early because our son is keeping her late. I wouldn't blame my son though, I would rather have Iris give me a look forever but at least I can see her every day and have her around with me and Jacques than see her for 5 hours a day.
