THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC5

IRIS

Sa 16 years na pag-aaral ko, I learned that my teachers and my professors have a specific pattern to teach their students—especially kapag nagpapa-exam. With all those 16 years, I learned how to crack those codes.

Minsan doon niya kinukuha yung quiz natin. Wala dyan lahat sa powerpoint. Nalaman ko yun nung first quiz natin," mahinang sabi ko kay Kaia dahil nasa library kami ngayon at nagrereview para sa second quiz namin sa Writing for Radio and Television mamaya.

I scoured my brain for the possible questions our Prof will thrown to us. It is an oral recitation and our second quiz; True or false. Our Prof will ask us something about the topic and then we will answer if it's true or false. Plus 5 sa prelim kapag tama ka.

Malapit na kasi ang prelim exam thus I have to review harder. Every term matters. I don't want to screw this one because I already screwed the first quiz—no, surprise quiz.

"Then read the PowerPoint. Baka dyan na ni mam kunin yung mga questions," I assured her.

"Music is also very important element in radio. It aims to generate the appropriate atmosphere so as to make language work on the listener and with the desired objective. That's true, Mam said—"

I even saw the librarian extending her neck na parang hinahanap kung sino ang source ng ingay.

"Shhhhhhhsss-" the librarian hissed.

"Mag review ka nang tahimik," I warned her but she just makes a comical face then proceeds to read the PowerPoint on her phone. I was about to read the PowerPoint on my phone when I saw Joaquin and his orgmates entering the Library.

Even your presence would shout authority without you making an effort.

After no'ng pag-uusap namin ni Joaquin no'ng first week ay hindi na 'yon nasundan pa. Nagkikita naman kami around campus but we're not on speaking terms—even in the classroom. It's not that I was aiming for his attention. I was just thinking na kung mag-uusap man ulit kami baka magkaroon na ng bad blood between us.

Besides, I don't want to raise another problem with my new school. I have lots of problems on my plate right now. Adding this dilemma with the Student Council President would certainly make me lose my sanity.

"Anong meron, Kai?" I queried while my eyes are still fixated on the Powerpoint.

"San?"

I looked at Kaia and I saw her still reading the PPT.

Kaia yet again back at reading the PPT.

"Ah, diba I told you na may welcoming concert sa Friday?

"Eh kasi gusto nila Pres na mag-enjoy yung mga new students, transferees, and well, yung mga old din. Kumbaga, for once wag muna puro aral; mag-enjoy din minsan. Parang ganon," Kaia explained while still reading. "Pero that's their words, not mine. And I forgot to tell you pala na wala tayong class non. Party party lang! Wooh!" dagdag niya pa.

What?

"What?! No!" Kaia squealed which earned her a death stare from the other students.

"What the fuck Kai, shut up!" I groaned with gritted teeth dahil baka malintikan na talaga kami. I was about to look for the librarian pero kay Joaquin, na nakatingin na sa amin, rather sa akin, together with his squad, dumapo ang mata ko.

Shit.

"Sorry, Ris," Kaia apologized.

"Okay lang, let's go."

I saw the Student Council looking at me pagkatapos kong pagtabuyan si Kaia palabas. I have to ignore them kasi nakaka-intimidate silang tingnan. Perhaps because they're the Student Council? They have the authority? Or intimidated lang talaga ako?

"Number 45 po," I said while giving the librarian our number but while doing so, I noticed that the SC still looking at me. I fought the urge to roll my eyes. I just said earlier na ayoko ng bad blood considering na mataas ang posisyon sa school ng mga taong 'to. But I didn't back away.

I made a slight triumph smile when some of the SC Officers look away nang tingnan ko sila pabalik.

Except sa isa.

Bago pa itanong ni Joaquin kung bakit naka m-slit button front tartan top & skirt ako, I immediately grab our bags at dire-diretsong lumabas.

I cajoled her that it's okay but slightly scolded her to minimize her voice when we're at the library.

"Baka i-ban na nila ako," she sighed.

"They couldn't do that, nagbabayad ka ng library fees. Kapag ginawa nila 'yon, go to the finance office then reimburse your money," I argued at nag-brighten naman ang mukha ni Kaia, pumitik pa siya sa hangin.

"Oo nga no?! Di ko naisip yan. Sige ganyan nalang gagawin ko incase. Thanks Ris," she beamed and I just shrugged.

We saw our Prof heading towards our building kaya binilisan na rin namin ang paglalakad.

So far wala pang nagkakamali. Mukhang lahat kami nag-review talaga.

"One of the goals of the radio public service program is to generate funds or call for donations. True or false?" asked Mam Villanueva to Marc, my gay classmate.

"Uhm, pwedeng true, Mam?" Marc guessed which earned him a confused look from our Prof. "Joke lang po, true Mam, true!"

"Miss Pangkalinawan," Mam called again.

I'm sure masasagot niya 'to. She really did review. Tinaas ni Mam ang paper na hawak niya kung saan nando'n ang mga questions and looked back at Kaia.

"The documentary content ideas can be found everywhere."

"True!" Kaia asserted.

Ang dali naman nun! Nasa PPT yun at sobrang dali lang tandaan. Limang classmates ko pa ang natawag before my surname called.

"There are 5 C's to consider in writing for broadcast."

"False," I confidently said. I read this. It's false.

"Why?" Mam asked.

"Mam?" I asked back.

"Why is it false?" Mam asked again.

"Uhm...because it should be 6," I skittishly answered.

"There are 6 C's to consider in writing for broadcast. These are Clear, Concise, Conversational, Complete, Current, and Correct."

"Plus 10," Mam declared which made my classmates go batshit crazy.

"Hoy!"

"Ikaw?"

"Paotsin."

"Sige paotsin na rin sa akin. Asian Chicken," she then grabbed her purse and gave me a 100 peso bill.

I headed towards the paotsin station. Buti na lang wala nang masyadong tao. Sobrang blockbuster kasi ng paotsin dito. Bukod kasi sa mura, masarap talaga.

"Dalawang Hainanese rice and dalawang Asian chicken. Sweet sauce parehas. Dine-in pareho."

I was busy watching them cook when someone cleared his throat. Only to find out that the SVU Student Council President is standing right by my side.

"Five orders of Hainanese rice and Asian chicken. Yung dalawa ate sweet chili and yung tatlo sweet sauce lang. Dine-in lahat," Joaquin replied.

Ang dami naman nun! Lumingon ako para hanapin kung bakit ang dami niya in-order only to see Kaia mouthing something to me. Two tables away from Kaia and I's table.

My eyes landed to Joaquin and I saw him looking kung saan ako nakatingin kanina, and then he looked back at me.

"Sabi ko nandito sila pres!" she beamed.

"Oh?"

At doon sila talaga kumakain.

"Oh?"

"I mean, sobrang big deal kaya ni Pres?! Dapat may ibang gagawa nun for him. Sobrang busy kasi nila."

I looked at their table at nakita kong nakatingin sa akin si Angela.
