IRIS
I somehow agreed with them because I read novels and watched films about law school and how they describe their Professors and their room ambiance were congruent to these assumptions.
But nothing beats my classmates' hypothesis—theirs were horrible.
Grabe sila mag-assume.
"Naging prof na rin daw 'yon ng senior namin sa org and sabi niya namamahiya raw talaga 'yon," my classmate murmured.
Kaia and I were sitting at the front at rinig na rinig namin ang conversation ng mga kaklase namin. I was just looking at the whiteboard while Kaia was intensely listening to our classmates when the door swung open and the subject of my classmates' conversation finally arrives.
Umayos kami ng upo and I heard some of my classmates' subtle gasped nang humarap sa amin si Atty.
"Is this AMC-302?" my prof inquired.
"Yes," we announced in unison.
"I'm Atty Galicia; I will be your professor in Communication Media Laws and Ethics."
I could tell that my classmates—including Kaia were holding their breaths while my professor was looking around. I fought the urge to laugh kasi kung titingnan mo talaga sila para silang takot na takot. I would love to think na hindi pa naman siguro kami papahiyain ni Atty kasi first meeting pa lang namin 'to—siguro soon.
"Mga Comm students kayong lahat? Third-year?" Atty guessed.
"Yes, Sir!"
"My pre-law was in Journalism. I'm sure alam niyo na kung bakit nag-withdraw ng membership ang GMA from KBP?" Atty asked and I immediately heard muffled sounds.
"Why?"
I just want to know kung natatandaan niyo pa yung mga inaral niyo. I think na-discussed na ito sa inyo way back first-year, right?"
Introduction to Communication.
I vaguely remember the details but I think I knew the answer.
"Yes!" Atty acknowledges me.
I stood up. I saw Kaia shocked.
"Ito po yung tungkol kay Mike Enriquez and ABS-CBN?" I stammered.
"That's one," Atty agreed. "Ano pa?"
"Uhm, yung isa pong host ng Startalk, I think it was Rossana Roces—no'ng may 'foul' po siyang sinabi, and last yung sa commercial po."
I sighed after kong maka-upo. That was first-year lessons! Buti na lang nakinig ako no'ng time na 'yon.
"Yes, GMA withdraws their membership from Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas because of these three reasons, diba? The first ground ay yung kay Rossanna Roces—yung obscene statement niya while being on aired sa Startalk. Also Mike Enriquez, for lambasting rival station ABS-CBN, that's correct, and yung commercial overloading nila," Atty further explained.
Kaia gave me a triumph smile.
Atty Galicia also shared the scope of our topics for prelims. He said that we have to do an extensive reading sa Constitution ng Pilipinas dahil start na ng recitation sa Thursday.
"On Thursday, please bring 1/8 index card..."
I heard papers and bags being shuffled when Atty assigned us to bring 1/8 index card on Thursday. I didn't bother jutting down because I saw Kaia hastily scribbling Atty's assignment to us.
"Write your full name on the right side corner, your section, the subject, and the schedule. Then put a 1x1 picture on the top left. That's all. See you on Thursday," yun lang at mabilis na lumabas ng room si Atty.
Halos magyakapan ang mga kaklase ko—may napaluhod pa nga.
"Pano mo nalaman 'yung sagot dun, Ris?" tanong ni Kaia habang pababa kami ng building.
May 1-hour vacant kami and I am craving paotsin.
"Saan?"
"Dun sa tanong ni Atty!"
Nagtataka ko siyang nilingon, "Pinag-aralan natin yun no'ng first-year. Na-take niyo na Intro to Comm diba?"
"Yeah, first-year, I guess. Pero di ko na maalala yung lesson na 'yun."
"Lesson learned: making na kay Teacher," paalala ko.
Ang daming tao sa Canteen nang pagpasok namin. Ang init tuloy. Pero pumasok na rin kami dahil gutom na kami pareho. After we ate our lunch, we immediately go back to our room because it's almost time for our second subject—Music Appreciation.
Kaia loves this subject dahil parang interesting daw. Favorite niya raw kasing subject no'ng first-year ay Art Appreciation. Baka maging favorite subject niya rin itong Music Appreciation kasi may appreciation.
When we arrived at the classroom, kokonti palang kami.
She was holding nothing but her phone.
Kaia was stoked.
***
Nagpa-attendance lang at nag-early dismissal din kami kay Mam Music App kaya maaga rin makakauwi sina Kaia—while I still have one subject.
Kaia yet again accompanied me into my room. I didn't know if it's because she cares I might cry for being alone or she just wants to know where Kurt room is.
I began because Kaia was busy searching for every other room.
"What?"
"Classmate ko si Kurt mo sa RIPH," I declared while waiting for her reaction.
"What?!"
"Yes, and pakihinaan boses mo please mamaya may lumabas na prof dito!" she ignored my request and started punching me on my arm.
"You should've told me?!"
"Nakalimutan ko."
Para makabawi kay Kaia ay sinama ko siya sa harap ng room. Ituturo ko sa kanya kung saan nakaupo si Kurt. Nakasilip kami sa maliit na window ng backdoor kung saan makikita mo ang mga tao sa loob. But Kaia failed to see Kurt dahil wala pa ito sa room. I looked at my watch. It's 4:55 pm.
Kaia and I jumped from our spot when someone cleared its throat from our back. I immediately looked back to see the Neanderthals only to find out Kurt's face—and Joaquin, and some of their friends.
"Classmate ka namin, right?" Kurt guessed, looking at me.
"Yeah. Sorry nakaharang kami sa daan."
Natatawa kaming tiningnan ni Kurt while we scooted on the side para makapasok sila.
"No, ladies first," Kurt gestured na mauna na kaming pumasok. I waved my hand as my response and told them na mauna na. Bago sila pumasok lahat I saw Joaquin looking at us...weirded out. I looked at what I'm wearing kasi baka ito na naman ang source ng gazing niya.
I'm wearing a white cradle short-sleeve front-tie crop and distressed baggy jeans and my favorite sneakers. While Kaia is wearing white puff-sleeved and white low heel platform. I whipped my head back to Joaquin but he already averted his gaze and entered the room. I looked back at Kaia who was ready to faint.
"Hoy! Parang timang 'to. Dahil lang sa lalaki?!"
"Iris!"
Pinalo na naman niya ako.
"Thank you, Iris!" she thanked while hugging me. "Buo na araw ko."
Napangiti ako.
"Oh sige na, umuwi ka na. Papasok na 'ko."
"Okay! Bye Iris thank you talaga!"
"You're welcome. Bye!" I replied before I entered the room.
Nagpa-attendance lang siya and assigned the class to look for Class Representative—which was none other than Joaquin.
She asked Joaquin na ilagay na lang sa office niya yung pina-ikot na 1-whole yellow pad for today's attendance and Mam then dismissed us early.
‘Yun na ‘yon? Anong meron at lahat ay nagpapa-early dismissal?
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC4IRISI decided na huwag munang umuwi. Maaga pa naman. Besides, rush hour ngayon. Ayokong makipag-siksikan sa mga jeep, sayang outfit.I went to the library para magpalamig and para na rin mag-research. I seated at the far end dahil walang masyadong tao roon. There were also a bunch of boys at the middle table, nakatutok sila sa mga cellphones nila, obviously mga nag lalaro ang mga 'to ng mobile legends.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC5IRISSa 16 years na pag-aaral ko, I learned that my teachers and my professors have a specific pattern to teach their students—especially kapag nagpapa-exam. With all those 16 years, I learned how to crack those codes."Natandaan mo pa ba yung mga discussions ni Mam? Minsan doon niya kinukuha yung quiz natin. Wala dyan lahat sa powerpoint. Nalaman ko yun nung first quiz natin," mahinang sabi ko kay Kaia dahil nasa library kami ngayon at nagrereview para sa second quiz namin sa Writing for Radio and Television mamaya.I scoured my brain for the possible questions our Prof will thrown to us. It is an oral recitation and our second quiz; True or false. Our Prof will ask us s
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC6IRISI woke up at the sound of an incoming call from my phone—probably Kaia's demanding voice na pumunta na ako ng school.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC7IRISWhen I was in high school, generally, Monday ang start ng mga exams, hanggang Friday na 'yon. However sa SVU, it depends on the professors kung kailan sila sa linggong ito magpapa-exam, usually Wednesday lagi ang start. We have two prelim exams waiting on our post. We have two hours allotted for this review. Wala kasi kaming class sa first subject namin.I opened my messenger and chatted Kaia on her location. Hindi na kasi nagreply.Iris De Leon:Where you?
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC8IRIS"Asan ka na?" I read the text on my phone dahil kanina pa siya nagvi-vibrate. That was Kaia. I've had enough with her incessant texts asking for my location kaya tiningnan ko na. Nakauwi na kasi siya. While I am still at the school kasi ako ang magpapasa ng prelim output namin sa DevComm. And there goes our DevComm subject. Halos mabaliw kami kahapon ng mga kaklase ko dahil kahapon lang din binigay ang prelim exam namin—which was to make a research about this certain topic our Prof provided for us. That was a 28-pages reading and we have to make a little research about it! For one day only—no scratch that—for one night only!I had to break my 8-hours slee
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC9IRIS"Good morning, Miss bad-ass transferee!"This is my first eye-rolling for this day. And I can't wait to count on how many eye rolling's I could make whenever I hear those phrases. Can't they just forget what happened and go back to our usual lives?"Shut up!"Kaia chuckled, "Ang cute nga eh, Miss bad-ass transferee," she quoted in the air.I rolled my eyes. That's two.Mukhang hindi na talaga ako patatahimikin ng araw na 'to dahil lahat nang makakasalubong namin ni Kaia ay bumubulong ngsiya 'yung si Miss bad-a
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC10IRISIt seems like everything is back to normal. I still get subtle looks from my schoolmates but its minimal compared last Monday where everyone made it their agenda to gossip what happened between me and the SC President. I need to be used to it. That's the only option. However in this class, since pugad ito ng mga engineering—and Joaquin belongs in this block, the teasing between me and Joaquin
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC11IRISToday is our General Assembly at walang class. Buong maghapon lang daw kami sa theater—according to Kaia, and I'm running late.I'm wearing a white mesh ruffled halter dress and crop top denim jacket and white shoes. I thanked myself that I chose to wear these matches because I was free to run. And I want to show my support to her. They were already looking at me. Ugh. Baka i-ambush interview pa ako ng dalawang 'to. Late na nga ako e!
“Miss Wilson, you may start with your introduction.” Our Prof said. Maingat kong pinasadahan ng kamay ko ang script na hawak ko for this debate. Naglalaman ito ng mga rebuttals ko tungkol sa film na Dancer in the dark. “This counter-argument will be divided into three sections: 1. Psychological aspect; 2. Culture and Economy; 3. Gender Perspective. These are the missing points I sought and heard while I was listening to your argument. I hope you’ll respect my counterpoints as much I respected yours,” was my starting point. I looked at Jacques, tamad siyang nakatingin sa akin. ‘Yung tipong sinasabi na ng mata niya na siya ang mananalo sa debate namin na ito.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGESC#3JOAQUIN – Iris’ birthday.“Joaquin…”Damn, if there’s one thing I want to hear for the rest of my life, it would be Iris’ voice. It is just so soft and tender and enchanting.“Yeah?”But she didn’t answer.“My love…”“I’m scared, Joaquin…”I looked down at her face only to see her teary-eyed eyes. She’s already looking at me.“Scared of what?”I a
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGESC#2IRIS – Revelation day. When Joaquin sleepover at Iris’s apartment. It’s so quiet.I feel like I’m inside a theater and I’m watching a horror film and everyone is silent because the scene is about to scare the shit out of us.That’s me and Joaquin right now. With Jacques in the middle, sleeping quietly.“Hey–”“You know what…”Yes, we open our mouths to talk at the same time. Cheesy as fuck, right?“Talk first,” I initiated.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGESC#1JOAQUIN – Finals. Last day. The day Iris flew to Paris.“Pres, pinapatawag na raw kayo ni Dean sa office niya,” Matt informed me after I entered the SC office.I nodded at him. When I reached my office, I immediately call Iris because we decided to go to Dean’s office together. And she still not texting me.“The number you have dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later.”My forehead creased. Iris would never shut off her phone just like that. Especially today that is very important for her.&

THE GOOD EQUAL | TGEEPILOGUEPART2IRIS"Hello, Joaquin?" I mumbled when I picked up the phone without looking at the caller."Anong Joaquin? THE GOOD EQUAL | TGEEPILOGUEPART1JOAQUIN"Jacques, where's my kiss?" Iris called out our son. She's about to leave for work but Jacques is keeping her stilled in her spot. Iris then gave me a look."Where's Jacques?" she mouthed.I shrugged, which made her roll her eyes."Pakikuha na siya please, mala-late na ako," she pleaded. I crooked a smile before I rose from the couch and fetch our son from his room.It was already a routine. Iris always had a hard time going to her work early because our son is keeping her late. I wouldn't blame my son though, I would rather have Iris give me a look forever but at least I can see her every day and have her around with me and Jacques than see her for 5 hours a day.
THE GOOD EQUAL | #TGEC42JOAQUINI'm already certain about my life: my dreams, my career, my needs, my wants, everything. It's already listed and all I have to do is to execute them.
