As James stared at the monitor, looking at the title millions had read by now, scrutinising the photograph every noble in Terres Somnia had no doubt gawked at hours earlier when the news broke, James Beaumont felt his heart break one more time. It was a familiar thing; he almost didn't feel it anymore. Or maybe he deceived himself into thinking so. He did not know.
He knew only what he saw. He would know her anywhere. Caught in a compromising, passionate, crude kiss with her arms wrapped around the engaged Prince Aaron. It was nighttime, his body and dishevelled clothes covered hers and the lighting in the elevator was somehow poor. This was the probable reason that the writer of the article had assumed that Emily was Aaron's fiancée, Lady Zoey Arden.
Both women being blonde and it having been a masquerade ball, it wasn’t such a stretch. Besides, who could’ve imagined that they would do something so stupid in public at his engagement party?
He understood all too well what would happen now. The House of Arden and the House of Condor were on poor terms as it was. The House of Arden must know about the prince's betrayal by now, or soon would. It would be all about reaction and politics and the dormant feud flaring back up between the two houses. And they were both King Henry and The Duke of Arden, merciless men.
It seemed Terres Somnia's darkest hour had come after all and there might be war. How could Aaron be this reckless? Couldn't he at least have been discreet if he had to revert to a past hubris at such a crucial time? With one more sip of whiskey to wash down the heartache, James called for his car.
He had to leave before his father found him and tried to manipulate him. He had to buy some time to think. He knew about the scandal that had resulted in Aaron's fiancée being born the bastard child of Duke Arden. Having himself been labelled a bastard on occasion, he found himself thinking of the girl from small town Rosa, who would not be treated kindly.
He remembered how he'd spent his childhood being hidden away by his parents, only to have to go on the run five years ago when The King's Guard came after him and his mother. He had only recently again emerged into noble society and that too, not as his father's son, but rather as the infamous, much talked about, duke of Copia.
With his grandfather Duke Byron's death, James came back under his mother's maiden name, hoping it would go unnoticed as he risked his now peaceful life to do so. He had done this for Emily. She who had long held his heart. Had he then not enough of hers to prevent this?
She claimed to always love him, but things were always somewhat up in the air with her and Aaron. Still, he had let go of his reservations. He had done so for her, she who had now done the one thing that James did not tolerate. She had betrayed him.
As he drove down the quiet streets of the country, who would so hate him if they knew of him, he thought about her again. This girl whose golden locks smelled of her innocence, her purity. He first laid eyes on her at CC's last birthday ball. And though he was spoken for, he was only a man. There was no denying her beauty.
James had attended the ball to see if he might mix with the crowd without being recognized and to claim his new title publicly. He was all nerves that day when Aaron came to him. Aaron had been a noble brother, making no effort to oust him and instead welcoming him and accepting him as of his party. They went around the room shoulder to shoulder, Aaron quietly mocking the nobles and parting information on who was who as he introduced them all to the Duke of the House of Beaumont.
Aaron smiled then at a lady with locked hands who seemed to be looking for him. She had somehow escaped the boring nobles and, sensing that this was a rare opportunity, Aaron ditched James without a word. James watched with interest as they locked hands and took off. He thought for sure it would fizzle out in time. Having grown up with Aaron and knowing his affinity for beautiful women was something of an achilles heel. They had stolen away from the ballroom and out onto the terrace and she was smiling as she tied back his long, dishevelled hair.
As time went on and James spent more time catching up with Aaron, it became evident that Aaron did, in fact, intend to marry her after all. And though it was hardly usual for Aaron to take orders, he seemed so much taken with her that James was certain he had let go of his attachment to Emily. How could he have been so wrong? How could he have made plans for his whole life based on Aaron's word, which had all their lives been unreliable? Her eyes, her big, round, bright, sparkling hazel eyes lit up by her smile, would not leave him.
Then suddenly, they were before him again. Her big, hazel eyes were staring out the window of a car in the lane next to his. They were filled with tears, shock, and devastation. They looked as he felt. He knew he had to save himself somehow, but the urge to protect was stronger as he looked upon her.
It was like looking in a mirror. In a moment, he went mad. It was instinct; it was primal. It made absolutely no sense. Being in the public eye would wreck his mother. He didn't need to be part of this war. He could simply disappear again. Yes, it made absolutely no sense, and it absolutely had to be done. He had to stop hiding and help her.
James told himself he was out of his mind as he cut the other car off on the quiet streets of Caines. Zoey started. Bart glared and even bared his teeth in a low, threatening growl.
And if James hadn't had the night he'd had, seen the things he'd seen, he might've turned back and gone home to pack. But he had seen. He had been betrayed, and he had laid eyes on her again. Those innocent eyes that would haunt him forever if he didn't get out of the car right then and there.
He meant to be thinking of Emily, he really did, but Emily's face now brought him pain. Was it really so terrible that the girl in front of him quieted the dull ache in his heart?
Cautious not to make any sudden moves, he got out of the car and raised his hands in the air as if in surrender.
"Move, Beaumont!" Bart yelled, sticking his head out of the window.
The words may as well not have been said, because he was looking at her and only her. This time she looked back, too.
It was only a moment, but that's all it took for Zoey's body to heat up. She'd been feeling cold up to just a moment ago, numbed by the image of Aaron kissing another woman. More than kissing. It was evident that they meant to do so much more. But those greener than green eyes drew her in until there was nothing but him. His pain, his anguish. They were all so familiar. It comforted her. So seldom had she felt comforted in her life that she dared not look away.
At last, James found he could speak after all. Bartholomew, being privy to the details of James' upbringing, was undoubtedly justified in being suspicious of him. His mouth moved on its own. He had said it before he even formed the thought.
"I wish to speak to the lady, if she will allow it," said James.
"This is neither the time nor the place, Beaumont. The lady—"
"Will speak with you," she breathed, almost too softly to be heard.
But James heard. He heard every sound that she made, so focused was he on her. Bart drew his fingers through his hair as he contemplated what to do. He gave her a look before he got out of the car and went over to her side of the car to open her door.
"Five minutes," Bart said to James as he watched her walk over to James' car.
Bart turned his head, then to his sister.
"I will be right here," he promised, folding his arms and leaning against the hood of his car.
She gave him a smile and nodded. Zoey didn't know why James wanted to talk to her. She barely knew him. All she knew about James Beaumont was that he seemed to be shrouded in mystery. As she got into his car, she was reminded of who she was talking to.
It wasn't that they were practically strangers that unsettled her. It was how familiar he continued to seem in spite of it. This thought nagged at her.
She had seen him in passing a few times and even talked to him, but she wouldn’t say that they knew each other. So why did he want to talk to her?
"What is it you wish to discuss?" she asked plainly.
It sneaked up on her, but perhaps she had made a poor decision agreeing to speak with him after all. The familiar feeling had begun to be almost painful.
What was James doing? Even he didn't entirely know. This was new for him. James Beaumont knew which companies he wanted to do business with. James Beaumont knew instinctively what clothes he would buy when he walked into a store. He knew how to solve a problem before it had even been reported to him. What he didn't know was what he was doing in a car with Aaron's fiancée, especially on a night like tonight, when they were both sure to be missed, sure to be looked for.
He watched her fidget, playing with her fingers and looking for all the world like she would burst back into tears at any moment. For the second time in his life and that night, James' mouth worked faster than his brain.
"Marry me."
The words came out, and he wished them unsaid the next moment. Her large, vulnerable hazel eyes grew even bigger.
"I'm sorry. What did you just say?"
Still the words came, as though without permission.
"Marry me tonight," he said, "and I will protect you."
2018, December 4th "Are you people out of your bloody minds!" Zoey knew that she was yelling, but she couldn't help it. "I just met the lot of you two days ago, one day really," she sucked in a deep, much needed breath, "and now you want me to marry some dude I have never even met?" His Grace raised his hand in dismissal of Zoey and said, "Silence! You are of the House of Arden and you will accept the prince's hand. There will be no discussion on the matter." Duke Arden, however, was not accustomed to Zoey's temper. "The hell I will! You know what? How about you keep your money and I keep my hand and we just call it even? Cool? Dandy." She stormed off, well aware that she was bound to get lost in the mansion and not caring at all. "Why that little... You come back here this instant!" Duchess Arden shrieked. "She seems to have the right idea," Bart shrugged, fishing his keys out of his pocket and tossing them up into the air. "She shouldn't be having any ideas at all, and nei
2018, December 4th Aaron put his thumb and his index finger up to his chin and feigned concern. His question gave her some pause. It was quite the conundrum she found herself faced with. It was only a matter of time before she was found, whether she gave herself up or not. Zoey searched her angry brain for the way out, because she had to find the way out. She was not going to be married off, used as some sort of bargaining chip. No, they would have to find another way. She would have to too. Perhaps a part-time job or selling off all her mother's bags and shoes. Yes, another way. Normal, everyday people did this stuff all the time and Zoey had never been raised in a fancy mansion so as to make her feel or think of herself as but every day. He could see the gears moving in her head as she contemplated what to do, her hand still on the doorknob, with only his body preventing the door from swinging right open. He had done this many times, come for some girl or another in the depth of t
2019, March 4th As Zoey digested that for the second time in her life a proposal of marriage had come to her under the most unusual of circumstances, James' phone rang. The screen lit up to reveal the name Emily. After the ringing stopped, Zoey happened to look at the screen again. He had 53 unread messages and 71 missed calls. "Shouldn't you call her back?" "She's the woman in the photo with Aaron," James answered coolly. His face morphed into a look of disgust. Emily, sweet Emily. She would never be sweet Emily again. Not to him. "I see," Zoey answered, looking down at her feet. Of course. She was hot again with anger and embarrassment. "She's your girlfriend, right?" "Fiancée." James held up a hand, made a fist, and bit into it. "Former fiancée," he said, correcting himself. He turned to her then and could practically see her neurons unravelling. They weren’t in love. This was a business agreement. Hell, for him, it was a straight up revenge ploy. But James knew better
2018, December 4th "Fuck!" Aaron screamed in agony. It was only for a brief moment. Just a little jab. He would be okay. Zoey justified her actions to herself as she lifted the heel of her 6-inch stiletto off of his shoe just as Jesse was slamming the brakes on the car. Jesse whipped his head back, panicked. "Are you okay, Your Highness?!" "Fine," Aaron grunted through his teeth. Zoey was out of the car before Aaron could recover, but his grimace soon turned into a smile as he watched Zoey's younger brother Bart take his sister's hand and try to lead her off like she was a naughty schoolgirl. Zoey, however, was done taking orders. She marched her way right up to the gates. The guards bowed. "Open it up," she demanded. The guards looked sheepishly at Bart, who was standing behind her. "I, Lady Zoey Arden, demand that you open the gates right now!" No one could have been more surprised at her words than Zoey herself, but both Bart and Aaron were watching her now, stunned. "My L
2018, December 4th Zoey opened her eyes as an umbrella suddenly came into view above her head. Then, seeing who was holding it, she groaned. "Dude, seriously, just go away," she sighed. "Not marrying you, not marrying anyone. I haven't even spent a minute alone with the person I actually came to see." Zoey was tired, and the words were coming out of her mouth more freely than usual. "And who might that be? Should I be jealous?" Aaron smirked. He liked looking at her. Despite the many concerns he had, looking at her made him feel light somehow, made him feel like the version of himself that most people thought he was. Zoey got up and started walking again. "I have a life, you know? I'm starting my PhD soon. I have a mom. I have-" Here she fell short. What else did she have? This thought had just started making her feel depressed, and she was on her way back down again when she felt something being pressed into her hand. It was the handle of the umbrella. When next she knew, she
2019, March 4th Zoey was tossing and turning in her bed. Bart had finally retired to his own room for the night, leaving Zoey alone to watch the clock count down. In 20 minutes, James' deadline would be up. She went through her phone, which Bart had returned to her after much debate and warning, and groaned. The missed calls from Aaron were racking up. Her inbox was full. Zoey's mom had called and left a few messages, too. How would she tell her mom what had happened? But that was a problem for tomorrow. Tonight, she had bigger fish to fry. She texted her mom to let her know that she was okay and that she would call in the morning. 15 minutes left. It would take at least 10 to get to the place where she had met the duke, the prince, earlier that night. It was bizarre. Less so that Duke Beaumont turned out to be a prince. More so that Zoey would have married Aaron at the end of the month without even knowing he had a brother. Did she even know him at all? What else would fall throug
2019, March 4th "Sorry I'm such a mess. I didn't really think it through when I left," she said, biting her lip. He wanted to laugh at her, at the very different thoughts they had about her appearance, but swallowed a chuckle. "You look lovely, Lady Zoey," he flattered boldly. She frowned in disbelief, then quickly corrected herself and pasted a smile on her face. This time, he did laugh. It was a short one, but he couldn't stop it slipping out. Her eyes warmed to the sound of his laughing and she smiled, for real this time. Oh his heart, oh that smile. Something had changed. The feeling of familiarity was now more than just a feeling. He dared not hope, but he could swear that she had lowered her guard and he his own. They had, in a moment, become comfortable. "Good evening, Your Grace. Would the lady like something to drink?" the waiter interrupted. "A glass of red wine, please," she smiled pleasantly. "No," he said instantly. "Weren't you the one that wanted to have a drink?
2018, December 4th (5 minutes to sunset) As Aaron set Zoey down in front of the gates of the Arden residence, he knew his opinion of Zoey had changed. She was still exactly what he had pictured: innocent to a fault, lacking in experience and sure to have a difficult time as a royal. But there were other things too, like the way she crossed her legs when she ate ice-cream on that bench like she was at home. Or the way she claimed her name as an Arden and demanded to have the gates opened. Zoey had her own way of doing things and was skilled in getting what she wanted. "One future princess home on time," he smiled, pulling some leaves out of her hair. He locked his hands behind his back, afraid that old habits would betray him to her even more before asking, "So, lunch tomorrow?" Zoey thought for a moment. She knew what she had done today wasn't a feasible plan. She had no money and all her belongings were still in a room behind those gates. So maybe she was going to be stuck here
(Sartis Est: Some time ago)It was over, at least in real time. In her head, it was still ongoing. She was still imagining the agony, the fear her brother and parents and thousands of her people had experienced when they were blown to bits. Even as she watched her country still alight, still burning while what was left of her people worked tirelessly to put it out, she was kneeling in the dirt and the ashes to receive the crown, her father’s crown. A crown that was never supposed to touch her red-haired head. She remembered her father’s strict words to her brother every time he showed that he was hurt or wanted to cry. “Tears are not for monarchs,” he’d say and Ethan, her brother, would immediately stop crying, like it was a switch he’d just flipped. She kept saying the words to herself like a mantra, softly so that only she could hear them. When the other side’s surrender came, she gave the order to annihilate them. What good was their surrender now? Her entire family was dead and s
(8 Months Later)Their loved ones had, at last, convinced James that it was time to take Zoey on their honeymoon. King Henry had managed to detain the newlyweds for far too long, both he and James recognizing that he had a lot to learn about the ins and outs of what exactly being a prince entailed. Since James wanted to be with his wife and involve her as much as possible in his life, his world, even if that meant that they spent a lot of their time together working, Zoey was always with him, picking up the tricks of the trade along the way. They even managed to make it look romantic somehow, stealing little moments wherever they could, disappearing when they could. So their marriage wasn’t exactly on the rocks, but they had earned some time to just be with each other, like they’d always wanted. They had been gone for two weeks when the news that the palace would be having a new guest reached them. “Your worry lines are showing, Jamie,” said Zoey, wrapping her arms around his neck
2019, March 31st & April 1stShe was like a woman on a mission, running her fingers all over his body, touching his face with her eyes closed, like she was mapping him out for future use. He just watched her, letting her words settle into his heart. Her touch comforted him, made him feel loved, like he had all her attention. Maybe he was just letting it all go to his head, but he didn't care. As far as he was concerned, they were forever now. They really were a bunch of besotted fools. She was absolutely out of her mind for him and he for her and nothing and no one was going to change that."I love you too, James Beaumont, Condor, whomever," she whispered, as she watched him fall asleep. She had seen the questions in his eyes, the concern. Maybe she had taken on more than she could handle. There was peace in his eyes too when he picked her up afterwards, though. That moment that he looked at her and seemed to believe, seemed to realize that she was never going anywhere again, she wou
2019, March 31st & April 1st(Eleganter Ludo) When Zoey and James got to the penthouse around 3 AM, they were exhausted. But the goodbyes had been so emotional that they ended up just staring at the wall. “Having second thoughts?” he asked.“Nope. Are you?” she asked back.“Nope.”“Are you lying?”“Yes.”“Me too.” In a bid to make him and herself feel better, Zoey got up, put some music on, went into the bedroom and put the emerald dress he’d so lovingly saved on. “Dance with me?” she said, holding onto the skirt of the dress. He smiled at her. She had no idea what this gesture meant to him. “I never thought I’d see that dress again,” he said, pulling her into his arms, just holding on tight for a moment. “Do you know why I took it off of you that night?” he asked, as he began to gently sway to the music, moving with her. “You don't have to tell me,” she answered gently, looking down. There was hurt in his eyes, just like the moment he had taken it off of her that night. He
2019, March 31st & April 1st(Caines - palace)By the time James and Zoey showed up in Caines, it was already midnight. Feeling like they were about to betray everyone, James and Zoey were squeezing each other’s hands tightly as they sat in front of King Henry and Cassandra. “So, you’ve decided then,” said King Henry. “We’re leaving tomorrow morning. I’m taking Zoey on our honeymoon,” James said, kissing her hand. “Where to?” Cassandra asked, her face a mixture of happiness and concern. “We don’t know yet. We’re just going to go,” Zoey answered. King Henry was furious, but he said nothing. Cassandra sighed. “Well, make sure to take lots of pictures and enjoy every moment and check in-”“Damn it, he’s only 19, James!” Henry exploded. “And your sister, she can’t take a crown, not after what happened with her mother. You know how she is; she’s absolutely set on that boy.” “Henry, they’ve made up their minds,” Cassandra said gently. Zoey and James exchanged looks. She did know,
2019, March 31st & April 1stJames had been driving Zoey around all day on his brand-new motorbike. He thought he would have to get her one too and then thought better of it. He liked the feel of her against his back as he drove it, her arms around his waist. They’d been all over Copia. He took her to markets and what he considered to be a better painting class than what she'd been taking. He took her to beautiful clearings and showed her breath-taking flower fields and secret coves he’d found while walking on the beach for hours. The bathing suit she had shown up in last time she wanted a beach day was of course forbidden, but then the wetsuit she had ended up in didn’t make men stop and stare any less. It drove him crazy. He showed her absolutely everything he could think of.Finally, as the sun was setting, he took her up to his favourite tower of Beaumont house and showed her his favourite spot in his city. The sunset, the view, the warmth and safety of his arms, all of it, made
2019, March 30th & 31st"Leave my son be, Henry. He's happy. For the first time in his life, he looks unburdened," she said, her voice becoming unsteady as she showed him the pictures Bart and Aaron had collected of the newlyweds. There wasn't a single one in which they didn't look happy, truly, beyond a shadow of a doubt happy, even as they fled from place to place. They looked something like she and Henry had in the beginning. Always touching in some way or another, stealing secret glances and kisses and sharing not so secret ones. Forgetting the world and making their own. "He'll call, he always calls. We have a rule about going off of the grid. We always call within 24 hours. He's probably just-" Cassandra's phone rang. Sure enough, it was James. “Hi honey,” she answered, working hard to steady her voice. “Ma? What’s wrong?” “Nothing. I just had something cold to drink, that’s all.” “Sure you did,” he answered suspiciously. But as James was calling his mother while watchin
2019, March 30th & 31st Zoey woke up to the sound of the shower running. She picked up his shirt off of the floor and pulled it over her shoulders. Most of the wedding night was still a blank to her, but one tiny piece of memory stuck with her and she wanted to see if it was still there. She knew he had had something similar made for her for the Duchess’ Welcome, but that one seemed new somehow. That night, Zoey had woken up midway through James struggling to get her wedding dress off, felt the zipper go down and watched him as he hung it up. She wished she remembered the way he did, or at least remembered a better memory, like the actual wedding. This one memory hurt too much to have. She opened the closet door and there it was, not quite as beautiful as the new modified version, but still as radiant as the night she’d worn it. “I guess you do remember some things after all,” he said, watching her touch the dress nostalgically. She didn’t freak out that he was fresh out of th
2019, March 29thIt was barely a whisper, barely a whimper, but he heard her. He heard her give him her heart, truly and completely. James took a firm hold of her hips and slammed into her, entering her hard and fast. She cried out his name in pain. Sorry that he'd hurt her by being greedy and selfish and impatient, he rolled them back over and pulled out of her slowly, thrusting back in just as carefully, much gentler this time. He hadn't meant to be so rough; he just couldn't quite contain himself. She said the words, and he had to have her, had to make her his, be hers.Zoey's face relaxed into contentment. She was happy that he'd finally taken her, made her his in every way. It didn't matter that he'd hurt her a little, because the rest was pure pleasure, because her heart had never felt so full. They stared at each other as they went at it, painfully slowly at first. But he lost the battle, went back to being impatient and overly eager, didn't want to miss a single chance to make
