Chapter 2.

last update Last Updated: 2020-11-15 02:43:18

Throughout her life, Ruby used to make a lot of reckless decisions. Her teenage years topping the list, dating all the wrong guys, smoking the wrong stuff, barely ever studying, then her parents died. She and Eliza were all alone. It was her last year of high school, she once promised her mother that the day would come where she could be a doctor, so she did it.

She went through high school with a high enough score to be a doctor and soon she would be in her second year of med school. People say that she is intelligent and incredibly inspiring to be where she was today, from a messed up kid to a college student. Wow.

Truth is, Ruby owed it all to her aunt Mira. She stuck by her and Eliza's side, putting her personal life aside for them. Ask Ruby Hart who represented a hero for her and she would without a doubt say one name. Mira Philips.

"Ok, so we're the clueless side of the family, at least I wasn't the only one oblivious to this, right?"

Ruby rolled her eyes, chuckling dryly at that, "Yeah...Let's all be positive right now even though it's the end of the world," Mira shook her head, pulling her niece into a side hug, "At least your sister didn't keep you in the dark for months?"

"I am so sorry Eliza did this to you," Mira exhaled sharply, holding onto Ruby as she promised, "Don't worry, I'll always be there for you, as long as I'm here, don't worry about loneliness or being kept in the dark or all of that, yeah? Because I'm here for you."

The brunette Hart girl smiled, looking up at her aunt, "Thank you, that means a lot to me, Auntie Mira." It seemed as if Mira had something else to say before Ruby heard the sound of a heated argument outside, "I will go see what's going on."

She rubbed her sweaty palms on her jeans before stepping out of the room, noticing four pairs of eyes on her, Ruby sighed, turning around to close the door. "So...how is it going, abnormal folk?"

Van shook his head, furrowing his thick black eyebrows, "Ew...no, you are not calling us that."

"Good to know, I didn't like it either," Ruby pursed her lips in a straight line, giving him a curt nod before she turned to her sister, "Where are you going?"

Eliza sighed running a hand through her gold locks like she was used to whenever she was nervous before Van answered for her, "Nowhere."

The blonde Hart rolled her eyes at him before turning to Ruby, "I will be back soon. Don't worry."

The nineteen-year-old shook her head, "Nah, uh, I am coming with you," She attempted to follow Eliza but in a mere second Van had vamp-sped in front of her. Ruby gasped, stepping back, yet to adjust to all the supernaturals present in the room.

"No way in hell," Van protested, shaking his head, "You're not doing that," He stated as his hand curled around Ruby's wrist, harsher than intended.

"Van, baby...why don't you take it easy?" Noelle, Van's girlfriend, spoke up for the first time since Ruby had arrived, suggesting.

He turned to her, warning, "Stay out of this, Noelle."

"Hey, Van. I know you haven't heard about me for a few weeks or so, but did you forget that I do a thing called what I want," Ruby snapped at him, attempting to shove him away from her but it was like punching a brick wall, it only hurt her and had no effect on him.

Van repeated, almost demandingly, "You're not going anywhere."

She scoffed, shaking her head at him, "Who are you? And more importantly, who gave you the right to tell me what to do and what not? I am not your daughter. Hell, I am not even your friend!"

Will, soon enough, stopped between the two, ordering his brother, "Let her go."

"Are you kidding me? She's staying," Van told his brother, still glaring at Ruby, "So that your girlfriend over there won't put the blame on us when something happens to her princess of a sister."

"You heard me," Will titled his head, challenging his brother as he placed a hand over the hand Van was holding Ruby with, "I said let her go."

"That's twice today you've stood in my way today, little brother...," Van muttered venomously as he reluctantly let go of Ruby who wasted no time, following her sister out the door.

Eliza tried as hard as she possibly could to convince Ruby that she didn't have to go everywhere with her from now and on but persuasion was never really one of Eliza's talents, hiding the truth was.

The Hart sisters walked into the living room where a quite handsome man sat inside. Ruby's eyes gave him a once over, noticing his combed black hair, it was so clean that it might have been shining. She remembered seeing him once with Van and Will but she never cared enough to ask for his name. He was surprised, noticing Eliza's return with the company but didn't make a comment regarding it.

Eliza took off her jacket before throwing it on the table, she asked, "Now tell me what's Nicholas' business with this curse?"

"And they say I don't have manners," Ruby muttered, earning a narrowed gaze from her sister and an amused look from the stranger that she had yet to know the name of, "I have to admit. I never thought the guy with the cool haircut could be a vampire."

He smiled in return, motioning for her to sit down beside Eliza, "Please." Ruby crossed her arms as her sister scooted over, leaving room for her on the couch, "My brother, Nicholas, had no benefit from breaking the curse but in doing so, he will gain the allegiance, fear, and respect from vampires and werewolves all around the world."

"That sounds very strategic," The brunette teenager crossed her arms over her chest, claiming.

He nodded before raising an index finger, putting the small wrong with that idea, "Except that so many people have to die for that to happen."

Ruby raised an eyebrow, asking, "I am still trying to get a hold of all of this...how does one break the curse again?"

"It needs a witch to perform it, the heart of a wolf, and a vampire, and the sacrifice of the Nyx," He stated, using a handkerchief to clean a dusty spot on the table.

"What's a Nyx?"

"Me," Eliza spoke up, answering her answer, "A rare being that occurs almost every one thousand years...For the curse to be broken. I am going to have to die..."

Ruby blinked back, shaking her head, "No, that can't be it," She sighed, turning to the man in an expensive suit and admirable haircut, desperation lacing her words, "There has to be another way for this."

"There certainly isn't."

She scoffed, huffing out loud, "But Nicholas is your brother, isn't he? Can't you or anyone convince him otherwise? Wait...What was your name again?"

"Emmett King," He answered, adjusting the buttons on his jacket.

Ruby sighed, "Right...Emmett, who could convince your brother to retract? Pursue another lead for global domination?"

Emmett ran his tongue over his lips, releasing a deep breath, "Well, there's a way to kill him."

"Kill? Are you mad?"

She exclaimed, as far as she thought, a bad guy should be put down by being placed in jail but Ruby Hart, being new to the flow of things, forgot one key information. Nicholas King wasn't just any bad guy.

Eliza, however, wasn't as phased. She had known Will Langston for months now, she got used to the phrase, necessary deaths. It was the simpler term for, I am dating a murderous vampire.

"We will need a witch, won't we?" The blonde asked, raising her eyebrows as she laid her back on the couch.

"If they can channel that much power," Emmett conditioned, raising an index finger.

"But it'll kill them...," Eliza replied, shaking her head, "Neither Winnie nor Clara deserve any of this."

He crossed his arms, pursing his lips in a straight line, "I suppose you have never heard of the term, collateral damage?"

"We did but not like that, just tell us who can make your brother go back from something like that," Ruby asked once again, her doe eyes begging Emmett to present them a magical solution.

Emmett suppressed a laugh, enjoying the irony of that moment. The only person Nicholas would do anything for, die and kill for...was asking who might he listen to. He smirked, stating, "My brother cares for two things in this entire world."

"And what are those two things?" Ruby questioned, raising an eyebrow.

"Power and his...soulmate. Werewolves happen to have mates. Those whom they're destined to fall in love with." He answered, smiling to himself as though he knew something that they didn't.

"And where is that supposed mate of his?"

"I believe she is right here," Emmett said, ever so casually before Ruby and Eliza turned to look at each other with wide-open eyes. He only assumed that they figured out it was Ruby.

Apparently, Ruby didn't figure it out, for she gasped out, "Oh, my God, Eliza...Why would your mate try to kill you? That's like an unbelievably stupid thing to do."

The blonde shook her head in disbelief, muttering, "I can't believe we are even remotely related."

"What...do you mean me?" She cocked her head in confusion, pointing a finger at herself before Emmett nodded, confirming it. Eliza glanced at her sister, waiting for her reaction about the big reveal, "Yeah. Nice joke."

Ruby chuckled humourlessly but stopped when she noticed how dead serious Emmett King looked, "You weren't joking, were you?" She asked, squeezing her eyes shut as she wished he won't say what she thought he will.

"Unfortunately, I am not."

Eliza neared her sister, placing an arm around her shoulders, she assured, "I mean...it can't be that bad, right?" She mentally facepalmed herself, shaking her head, "I didn't mean it like...Wherever this takes us. I need you to know that I will always be right here for you. No matter what."

Eliza placed a hand on Ruby's chin, lifting it to look at her, "What are we?"

"We're family...," Ruby trailed off, answering without a hint of hesitation in her voice.

"And?"

"We're in this together," Ruby and Eliza stated, in unison.

Emmett sat there, looking at the Hart sisters as they comforted one another and he so secretly admired their sisterhood and how and he is brother used to be just like that at once upon a time. How Nicholas broke that.

Little did he know that the confused, outrageously energetic, and fun brunette Hart girl sitting right in front of him was going to fix the once broken vows and reunite the King's, remaking them as what they used to be.
