Chapter 5: A Frenemy

The Fairy’s Dragon Guardian

Chapter 5: A Frenemy

Oliver’s POV

Ten years – it was enough for a person to totally forget about another and start anew. It was long enough for feelings to fade, such as resentment and love. But is it really?

Under the dim lights inside the meeting conference, I didn’t expect to see her again. After ten years, she had become the Queen Fae while I the Dragon King. We are moving in the same world again. I noticed her as soon as I laid my eyes on her.

No matter how much time had passed, it won’t matter as I could easily recognize her. There was something unique about her, that’s why I couldn’t help but open my mouth when I saw her bit her lower lip.

‘I want to bite it.’

It was luscious red, like the plump cherries ready to be picked.

I approached them when they were about to leave, but she seems to act like she didn’t know me. I raised my eyebrows when I saw her crossed her arms on her chest as I continue to talk with the Phoenix Queen.

‘Jealous?’

I tapped my chest. Why do I feel something warm inside here? Is it because I am a fire dragon?

The Phoenix Queen was very enthusiastic in the conversation with me, and I could see that Crystal is becoming more annoyed with each passing second.

“Phoenix Queen, let’s arrange a meeting with all the team members to talk more about the details of the investigation.”

“That would be great.” She turned to Crystal, “Queen Fae, you’re free tomorrow, right?”

Crystal alternately looked at me and the Phoenix Queen then lightly brushed her hair.

“Ah, tomorrow?”

“Do you have other plans?”

Crystal looked apologetic, at least to me.

“I’m sorry, but I had a lot of appointments tomorrow. How about the next day? I can make time.”

“Great! Then Dragon King, that’s settled. See you on Friday.”

I nodded my head.

Then they bid goodbye and finally walked away. I looked at the direction they left. But her figure remained within my line of sight. I couldn’t erase it. What’s happening to me?

When I got back on my office, Jethro was already waiting for me inside. He was sipping red wine, which I presumed he got from my wine cellar. This guy really is just coming here for my collection.

“Why did you come here now? You didn’t even show up in the meeting earlier.”

“Aiyah, my father already attended it. We, goblins, isn’t that really interested in it.”

“But the meeting was about the pending doom with the devils. Aren’t you alerted even one bit?”

Jethro shrugged his shoulders and kept drinking his wine. I sat down on my chair after took off my outer coat, then hang it on the hanger nearby.

“Did you see you the Queen Fae?”

I paused when I heard him ask about Crystal. I feel cold all of a sudden.

“Why are you asking?”

“I heard something about her.”

“About what?”

“That before she was crowned as the Queen Fae, she used to be married to a human. How dare that insignificant and lowly man marry the majestic Queen Fae?”

Insignificant and lowly man? You’re making me laugh.

“Ouch! Why did you throw me fire cannon out of the blue?!”

“You’re noisy.”

I dusted my hand and continued with checking the pile of paperwork left for me to do. I felt refreshed after doing that, although I don’t know myself why I did that in the first place.

I just thought that he was like an annoying fly hovering around my head, like a mosquito beside my ear that I want to slap dead.

“I didn’t even do anything to you, and you threw me that. What’s the matter with you?!”

“If you went to the meeting earlier, you would know not to ask me about the Queen Fae. We talked about more important things.” I told him in a stern voice.

“What? Like how the world is ending because of the dark forces? Come on, the Immortal Realm is already talking about that like ten years ago.”

Jethro rolled his eyes and slumped down on the sofa with his usual lazy demeanor.

“Besides, are the dark forces really that great? The whole Immortal Realm can beat them to ashes if we want.”

“It’s not that easy. They are hiding among the humans and hid their tracks cleverly. It will be difficult for us to catch each one of them.”

“Can’t we just use a bomb on them? Or some kind of tracking device. That would really solve it, instead of relying on traditional and magical items.”

I shook my head. Certainly, the Goblin King didn’t know how his son behaves when he is not around him. The Goblin King might not even know how his own son still frequents human bars even though Jethro was already grounded once.

“We cannot use bomb nor use any tracking device, or else we will disturb the peace of the Human Realm. You understand what I mean?”

“Tsk, tsk. You leaders really do think differently than us followers. Don’t tell me, you were made the head of the investigation team?”

“Right at the bullseye.”

Jethro snickered and played with his phone.

“Is Queen Fae in the team too?”

What should I say? ‘Yes, but you won’t be able to see her because I’ll gauge your eyes out’ or ‘No, but she insisted to be on the team, and I couldn’t say no.’

But aren’t they the same thing?

“Don’t ask too many questions and be at the place I’ll send you on Friday. You’re on the team too.”

“Ughh, that’s so not fun without the Queen Fae.”

I clenched my hands.

“I’ll throw you out the window if you don’t get out of my office in five seconds.”
